This is an awesome store that actually has artists who are working here so they know what they are talking about! The merchandise selection here is outstanding there's sooo many different things a lot of which I've never seen anywhere else! I've been coming here since they opened and have always found everything I could need and then some that I just had to get! They also offer art classes and such I've never taken one here but I've herd that they were fun! The building that this store is in used to be a mortuary so that explains the strange design of it I wonder if the staff ever sees any ghosts? lol Anyway the only reason I'm not giving them full stars is because its a bit pricey here but the quality and the amount of merchandise here is totally worth paying the cost cause you won't find some of this stuff anywhere else! This place is not meant to be a huge warehouse, rather a really cozy Art Supply shop. I loved every bit of it. The Staff is very knowledgeable and courteous. They always have deals on just about everything. And I don't have to drive so far in Traffic to reach the Art Supply Warehouse in Westminister to get the same good prices. They also give you a nice re-usable bag for your supplies. Little cookies and snacks are always available. read more

I had a few art pieces framed in the past here and was very impressed with the friendly and professional service before this shop closed so I was very happy to see it reopen. Now I feel it is even better as there are three of the best designers and framers in the area now under this one roof. This summer I spent two months traveling through the Northern Territory and Western Australia becoming familiar with not only aboriginal art but the source of where the art is created and to meet some of the aboriginal artists firsthand. It was quite an experience and I learned so much about how the art is created and how it varies from region to region and aboriginal tribe to tribe and artist to artist for that matter. Each piece tells a story that only the artist can explain. The colors are such beautiful earth tones and many of the paints are actually created from the soil and rocks found in the region. Through my journey I was able to collect some one of a kind and very valuable art pieces. So when I returned home I wanted a few of these pieces custom framed and there was only one shop that I even considered, San Clemente Art and Framing. One piece in particular was actually the most expensive art piece I have ever purchased and it was painted by an elderly aboriginal artist in central Australia. It is a very unique spiritual piece depicting two Emu Spirits protecting a rock waterhole in the bush country where the artist is from. Murray who is a designer at the shop and also manager is truly a genius at his trade and helped me select the perfect way to not only stretch the canvas but then frame it with the perfect frame to display this piece as the artist truly intended. I ended up taking three more of my one of a kind aboriginal art pieces in and Murray, Patrick, and Tom combined their amazing talents and created pieces that I could not have been happier with. But the fact is that even though they are by far the best art framers and designers, the number one reason they will always have my business is because of their personal and professional service. I really enjoyed my time with all three of these guys, sharing our stories of art and adventure and regard them as my good friends now and in the future. read more

This place is a great, fully stocked art store with pretty much anything you need. If they don't have it, then they will order it for you. The staff is very friendly and will know your name if you're a regular. They have a very good selection of oil paint supplies, sketchbooks, markers and even a very good selection of different papers. I also regularly attend figure drawing class every Wednesday night here. The classes go on from 6:30-9:30PM. For $12, its plenty of time for my figure drawing fix. The models rotate every week and theres a good variety, so it doesn't become tedious. The classes have been very helpful with my day job and now I can sketch better and quicker! I highly recommend trying this class as well as other workshops this store offers. San Clemente Art Supply is a very comfortable, friendly, small town art store. This is a great little store that sells quality art supplies for beginning artists, all the way up to the pros. It is located in a lovely old "Ole Hanson" house, converted into an art supply store. They not only sell all your art class needs there, but they have competitive prices and I was shocked to see with my own eyes that they are lower in price -and higher in quality than Michael's! They also offer art classes to anyone who has the big pockets to pay outrageously high prices to take them. I say, go to Saddleback College and get the most bang out of your buck, but to those who can't make the time commitment of regular college, this is the next best thing. The grounds have lovely rose bushes in bloom year round, lush green palm trees and the orange flowered tree that is the official city tree of San Clemente. It is a historic building, located close to restaurants, and the little art store is very clean, tidy, organized and stuff is easy to find. If you can't find something that you need, there are wonderful artist salespeople who know all about the art supplies, and they are friendly and helpful to everyone who enters the store. Get in there and feed your visual senses! They also do framing, but I don't use the frame aspect of the business. Give San Clemente Art Supply Store your business, you will be shocked at their low prices and delighted with the quality of their merchandise. I got all my art class supplies there last week and saved a bundle of $$$ There is an old saying that you need quality art supplies to make quality art, and there is truth to that logic. If you have cheap paint, cheap brushes and cheap canvas, your end result will struggle to get birthed. You don't want to fight your brushes while you pain with crappy paint that is too thin, and you don't want your canvas to tear while you paint. You need quality supplies that will help your hand. Now, I usually head to Art Supply Warehouse for my art supply needs. But every once in a while an art student needs to get something somewhat odd and specific that ASW doesn't carry. In this case, my roommate needed some loose sheets of 18x24 bristol board. So it's off to San Clemente we go! This is the most adorable and charming little art store I've ever seen. It's nestled inside of a quaint little white building covered in rosebushes (seriously, rosebushes! :D) with a sign outside that can be easy to miss while driving along El Camino Real if you're not paying attention. There are bells on the door and a sign with a friendly warning that there may be a dog inside (the store dog!). Even the atmosphere inside is homey and inviting, like walking into an artist's skylight-lit bungalow. They have an impressive selection of supplies packed into this relatively small space, particularly when it comes to paints and brushes, as well as a variety of surfaces. They even have an entire room dedicated to paper (and as such, my roommate was able to find her loose sheets of bristol board). The staff is friendly and helpful and if you buy enough stuff, they'll even give you a free reusable bag to carry your purchases home in. Prices are decent (comparable to ASW) and fairly gentle on an art student's budget. They have major sales every once in a while with many items being about 40-50% off, some even up 75% off! Plus they have lemonade and brownies available on sale days, all neighborhood yard sale-style. The cuteness, it's almost too much. read more

This little art shop was completely charming. The outside of the shop is dressed in ivy and rosebushes with a small patio for sitting, if desired. The inside is a tad small, but they are definitely not short on supplies. I found EVERYTHING on my list, and more. I'd really prefer these kind of stores to the larger warehouses and such simply because of the homey, quaint feel. Prices are moderate, most of everything is slightly marked down from the "retail" price. All the employees are really helpful and kind. I will definitely be coming back here again--it's much closer than the ASW in Westminster, and the vibe is much more cheering. 5/5 stars, hands down. read more

This art supply store is nestled in a beautiful community in San Clemente. I am from Irvine so I am not familiar with the city nor the area. But this place is quite adorable and charming in it's architecture and its setting. I fell in love at first sight. Once inside it's rather small in comparison to Art Supply Warehouse (in Westminster) which is where I normally go for my art supply needs. However, they still have a good majority of the art supplies. The store associates are very attentive to your needs and seemed very sweet. This store gives off a cozy, local vibe. I thoroughly enjoyed this place for it's chill atmosphere. They seem to have art classes held here. I've seen signs for it outside before so it might be worth checking out. If you're from South Orange County, this would be the perfect place to grab you art supply needs. But if you happen to be living as far away as I am, there are better options out there unless you just want to go for a fun drive away from the city :) read more

This is a great art store for the professional and student. Great product variety in stock and they can order just about anything if they don't have it. I don't take the classes there because I went to a 4 year art college but the inventory is fabulous and staff knowledgeable and friendly. Has a great feel as well since it's an older building! The employee Jennifer was super helpful and kind! My watercolor teacher was super vague on the supply list for his class. So I went to Art Supply store completely in the dark about what I need. Jennifer walked me through the list and showed me which brushes I need and which are in my price range. She also told me what each of them are used for. She then explained the different types of watercolor paper to me and what most people get. Jennifer really knows what she's talking about and she also knows how to explain it to others very well. A gentleman took his time to help me find the proper drawing supplies for my son's Christmas gift. He looked through my son's drawing book in order to match which pencils would be best to buy my son. This is my absolute favorite art supply store in the area. And by area I'm referring to the coat from Laguna to San Diego. I'm only sad I don't live closer. It's a smallish building but it's always well stocked with great supplies. The staff are always incredibly helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about the art supplies. That goes for the folks doing the framing as well. I recently graduated from Laguna College of Art and Design and was always able to find everything I needed at a reasonable price here. By comparison, Art Supply Warehouse in Westminster is great, but still feels like a chain store. And Rhino art in Encinitas (which I'm closer to) is cozier but the prices aren't as good and they don't carry as much stock. And neither store had staff that were as helpful as the employees at San Clemente Art Supply. And they're right by the beach. What's not to love about that? read more

What a great little art supply store. I love the customer service... Real people who know art and can truly assist you. Their quality and quantity of goods just leaves Michael 's or Aaron Brothers in the dust. They have decent sales that help them compete with online stores. The biggest problem for me is they are pretty far away (45 minute drive each way). But when I'm out that way I stop by and get what I need. They are the only place I know of that will cut gator board to the size and thickness that you want. It's nice to see and feel what you're buying as well as ask questions - all of which is impossible when buying online. Highly recommend and encourage you to support our only local art store in South OC. True you might save a little money shopping online but it would be a shame to lose this lovely art supply store. read more

Took in a stylized print of Bettie Page, the clerk recommended a rather ostentatious frame to accentuate the piece, and I bit. Frame was fancy, cost over $400 for the frame, matting, the whole schmiel. Picked it up in 10 days, got it home, immediately noticed a chip out of the frame, rectangular in shape, running right along the glass. Bare wood. Notice a couple of other spots on the fame too. Take it back, dude is apologetic, calls a couple of days later saying it's fixed. Looks like someone ran a red sharpie over the exposed wood. Never going back. read more

A great place to shop for art supplies, canvas, paper, and frames. Love the staff and selection. I also love that they have a small fenced off place for kids to draw and build blocks while I'm shopping and that they are kid friendly and always talk to my kids when we come in. It's so important to encourage that love of art in children and the staff really helps my boys love it. They always want to come to the shop with me and know exactly where to go when they get there. The selection of paints, oil and watercolor are great. Canvas selection and size wonderful. Easels and pochade box selection is pretty good and they can order anything else you need. Brushes are a good selection, I would like to see some very high quality oil brushes if possible. I'd buy them! The ready-made frames are beautiful. I would say the custom framing section is very expensive since I frame most of my work. But they do have a good selection of frame moulds to choose from. Wonderful classes and the monitored model sessions are the best. So glad we live so close. read more
