WOW - All I can say is I have loved this place for years - tell all my friends about this place- they have the best prices of all pet stores in the area. I would never in a million years thought I would need to do this ... I have attended Rustys Halloween Party for a few years now. Just to let it be known, I only dress up my dogs for fun and I know I will never win nor do I expect to. Terry had told me that just putting on a store bought costume wouldn't be enough or original enough. They look for people who go the extra mile with creativity for themselves and the pet as a team. The owner Terry had mentioned to me that this years was going to be bigger and better and all the stores in complex getting involved. He practically raved and bragged about how Katsuya was going to put out sushi this year like Dominos does every year. What he FAILED to mention is that Katsuya would put out a platter of sushi at 6pm (when it starts) and you had better get there at 6 if you want a piece because that would be the 1 and ONLY platter for the whole night which is supposed to be till 11pm... The party starts at 6pm -They advertise the judging starts at 9:30pm which is how it SHOULD be. They let people keep lining up for a photo and they wont start the judging till after everybody is done getting there picture taken, So all the people who seriously want to enter contest are standing and standing all night waiting and waiting till judging starts which is around 10:30-11pm - Terry makes everyone stand all night waiting. ( truely believe that is why the lack of show this year. Rustys, you need to tell people if they arent already standing in line at 8:30pm than tough luck on entering contest. It is really hard on these dogs who are wearing costumes all night to just sit around for this long. I saw a couple of my favorites win something but at the same time there were a couple really really good ones who were so creative and original and didn't win a thing- I have to wonder if the little girl who dressed her dog as a horse (store bought) if she wasn't the daughter of one of the judges hmmmm Are you kidding? I guess Terry and judges picked friends and family to win (that is how it looked to many of us watching) -ET was very original - although nothing to the costume - very simple -Hotdog stand - fun and different ) 3rd place baffles me (and others) when I saw a few other very creative costumes that won nothing at all - Princess Leia - a costume from a box you can get at any halloween store - (guess she was related somehow to the judges or a friend) One of my favorites of the night- the most creative beyond the hotdog stand was a golden retriever dressed as Hugh Hefner and his playmate - wow, very stunned that they didn't win anything - how did some of those lame uncreative or un original costumes in the other 7 categories wins beat this couple - the detailed work- the dog had a smokers jacket with a silk tie and a lanyard with laminated playboy magazines of dogs with bunny ears around his neck and the playmate even had a lanyard with a couple VIP passes with the dog dressed as Hugh and a cigar in his mouth- how does that costume get passed over compared to some of the others - I am not the only one who felt this way- Rusty the dog- OFF LEASH all night .... I sat next to the Hugh Hefner dog and playmate and owner - that Rusty dog wouldn't leave that golden retriever alone all night - if he wasn't trying to hump the dog he was underneath the dog - come on- that dog was waiting all night in his costume. every time a worker would see this they would tell rusty to leave - that dog would start to leave and come right back- that poor girl with her dog tried everything- I told her she should call animal control being the dog was wandering around all night without a leash or an owner to watch over it- she wouldn't report it - (bless her for having to put up with that) They wanted to leave but me and a couple others convinced them to stay, that they would for sure win something being not much originality this year - sadly they didn't win a thing -Terry lock up your dog next time- he was getting on my nerve by watching the frustration of this woman trying to keep Rusty away- I also witnessed Terry (Rustys owner) yell at a girl for feeding Rusty a piece of pizza that was everywhere even on the ground - If your going to let your dog wonder around with out a handler or leash- put up a sign that says DONT FEED THE DOG That and the actions of Rusty with the golden Retriever that night is Terrys responsibility not the guests of his party - very irresponsible of him to not have that dog locked up for the night - he had no right to yell at this person- Needless to say they have lost my business - Rustys and Terry ... Im just appalled by your actions this year! Lock up your dog next year Terry and let the people judge the top best costumes to make it fair and impartial read more

First let me say this, I am the owner of Rusty's Pets. Now that that's out of the way I would like to respond to the bad and factitious review given by A Victoria in regards to my grooming department, my staff and my business in general. Obviously this person has gotten us confused with some other pet store or she is outright lying about her experience here at Rusty's (I tend to believe the latter). WHY? BECAUSE WE DO "NOT" DO HAIRCUTS OF ANY KIND. WE ONLY DO BATHS. Therefore, this scenario could not of happened at all. Victoria, if your going to fabricate a story, you should get your facts straight about a businesses operations. Furthermore, we would never treat a customer especially someones pet in a fashion she has described. Victoria's review insinuated that we in someway mistreated her pet. The pets that are let in our care our handled with the utmost safety and care. We would never intentionally mistreat an animal and put an animal in harms way. Victoria also stated that my grooming dept. was blocked from view so no one could see in. Our grooming department windows are partially covered - that is true but only part of the way up and for a very good reason. We are on a very busy street and located in a very busy strip mail. It is unsafe, for both the animals and the bathers when cars pull in, people walk by or people tap on the windows. These pets are on tables or in tubs and they could slip or fall if someone or something creates a distraction for these animals. Customers, if they are interested in seeing the grooming area, are invited into a viewing area initially but are not allowed to enter the grooming room due to insurance reasons and for the safety of all concerned. The grooming room is fully visibly from the viewing area. We also have a video monitoring system in the main store where the customer can view the entire grooming process on camera as I do myself from my office, at home or anywhere I may be in world at anytime. However, I am at the store sevens day a week. Everything this person has stated is a lie. She has systematically attacked everything we stand for and have built our business reputation on for 21 years now. I believe in the truth and will stand behind the truth, be it good or bad. This is not the truth. these are outright lies. Victoria is more than likely a person WITHOUT an honest bone in her body and/or a competitor with the same traits aforementioned in an attempt to damage our highly regarded and highly respected business reputation within our community. This can be seen within her review by her mention and advocating of another pet store. NOTE: Rusty's was chosen on June 4 of this month 2009 as "Small Business of the Year" by the United Chambers of Commerce for our outstanding service to our community and our unwavering dedication and support throughout the years for the welfare and well being of all animals. The California State Senate, Governor Schwarzenegger, The US Congress, The United States Senate, The California Board of Education, The County of Los Angeles, The California State Legislator and The Studio City Chamber of Commerce have all presented Rusty's with Certificates of Recognition for our service to the community. These awards are not given out to just any business or frivolously. When someone writes or says something about my business that is not true, I do take it personal. I will defend our reputation when the truth is not spoken. Rusty's is NOT your typical business these days that tends to treat their customer's almost with disdain. We treat our customers with honesty. kindness and respect, and we expect the same. I am southern born. I was raised by my mother to treat animals and people with respect, to treat animals and people the way I would like to be treated "This is "Rusty's Core Belief". I started Rusty's because of my love for animals and my staff shares that love and respect - OR- they would not be working at Rusty's. Rusty's is named after my dog in honor of him. My pets are my children and I treat they as such and all pets, may they be my own or someone Else's. If you read any of the other reviews listed here you will see that a collie is mentioned several times that is seen at the store. That collie is Rusty Jr. He greets every person and every pet that visits Rusty's with a warm and inviting hello at the door as does our staff. So, Victoria, stop you lying ways and 'GET A LIFE" because my customers know the truth about Rusty's. They tell me everyday have great my staff is and how much they love our store. Jack and I now have one more reason why we love this place. I took Jack (my big baby of a Golden) today to get his regular monthly bath at Rusty's , where I've being shopped for over 15 years now, I couldn't believe what I saw when I starting looking around. It looked like they lowered prices on almost everything in there. All I could see were yellow stickers everything. This place already had some pretty low prices. Now they have incredibly low prices and they are packed with everything PET you can thing of (short of the fancy stuff). I'm on a tight budget so the less I have to spend the better. I though they were having a sale but the salespeople said no that these prices where their new prices. I couldn't believe the price on Frontline for my dog. It was only $36.49. I bought it online at petmeds for much more. Petmeds advertises that their price is the lowest -no true. This is a great price. I don't know how a small local place like this can beat the big guys but they do, on everything thing I buy at least. They a big selection of treats & toys, some I have never seen anyplace else. Now I have not reason to shop at any other place with these price. Their service is awesome, the employees are awesome. their grooming service is awesome. Jack always come home smelling and looking great. Jack look forward to his spa day. Jack jumps out of the car and runs right over to Rusty's Grooming area. Everything about this place is "AWESOME" especially Rusty - a Collie who is at the store everyday, it seems, with the owner. Rusty is one of the most beautiful & friendly dogs I have ever seen (outside Jack, of course). And, the best trained, by far. He just chills out in the front of the store like he owns the place( Well, I guest he does). This dog loves the attention. I can't say enough good things about Rusty's Pets. I highly, highly recommend Rusty's. FYI: I found out about this place through a friend as well and I am so glad I give them a try. read more

5 years ago I gave Rusty's 5 stars but I have to say, not sure if they have a new manager or just can't find good help, or aren't training people properly but the customer service has really gone down hill. I took my dog in for a bath. She had a sticky patch on her fur and she needed a flea bath. She was scratching a lot at night. Now usually when I take her into Rusty's for a flea bath the scratching stops. Usually for about a month or so. But not this time. When I picked her up she was scratching vigorously in the car on the way home. Before I even hit the stop light at Colfax. She scratched all night. She was scratching at home so much that I inspected her and found the same sticky patch on her fur. I'm not even sure if they bathed her or just bathed her very sloppily, I'm guessing it was just sloppily done. When I called to tell them what happened, some feedback, I was perfectly nice about it - the guy who answered the phone immediately told me that she probably got fleas in my car on the way home. Absolutely ridiculous. All the years - literally like 20 years that I've been going to Rusty's I've never once complained so for them to treat my one criticism this way, tells me everything I need to know. Rusty's has gone down hill and don't deserve your or my business. Also, when I showed up to pick her up at the time they told me, I had to wait 30 minutes - she wasn't ready. Instead of investigating to see who bathed her, maybe it was someone new who needs some better training... Instead of asking my name or my dog's name to do any sort of investigating, he just basically blamed me, the customer. I won't be wasting $45 on a sloppy grooming job again and neither should you. Update: I gave my dog a flea bath at home and the scratching stopped. I really miss the old Rusty's - Rusty's was my absolute favorite. read more

I have been shopping here since 2002. This store has always had the best prices of any other store in the valley. If they don't have a product they will order it. The staff has always been helpful kind and are very knowledgeable. They won't try to upsale or suggest you buy anything you don't need. I've also been using the grooming service since then. They lways do a great job. My dog loves the staff and the groomer, he may not like baths, but he will always give them wags and kisses after. It's sad to see bad reviews about rude and combative staff, parking or accusing Rusty the owners dog of wondering around parking lot. People, cameras are everywhere, even in grooming. So lying only makes you look bad. There are even close up camera in grooming to give you piece of mind your dog will be taken well care of. My dog has played with Rusty the dog since he was a puppy. That dog has been trained to never even set his foot off the curb. Always being watched by staff and cameras. I have never ever seen any of the staff be rude to any customer. This store also has the best holiday events of any other pet store in the area. Just look at the extravagant decorations they put up. read more

I dont think these people who work in the store know anything about customer service. They dont even smile, they are all like zombies. They dont make a person feel very welcome. They all seem very unfriendly. I walk into Krisers and they all greet you with a very warm greeting when you walk in the door. That is how you treat a customer. The prices here are really not that much cheaper than petco. I took my dog here once for a grooming and all seemed fine, than I took her in again and she was afraid to go in the door ... she was deathly afraid, They dont even let you see inside the door. Makes me wonder what really goes on in there. They definately did something to my dog to scare her. So beware people, there grooming may be cheaper, but you get what you pay for. And oh yeah, there toys are way too expensive and overly priced compared to other stores, so they really shouldnt be saying that everything in the store is cheaper. I will never bring her back. I've been coming to Rusty's Discount Pet Center for years, and I can't recommend them enough! They have an incredible selection of dog chews, bones, and treats that I honestly haven't been able to find anywhere else. Whether you're looking for something common or a harder-to-find chew, they always seem to have it. What really keeps me coming back, though, is the amazing customer service. Everyone is so friendly, welcoming, and genuinely helpful. I like going to rusty not only because its a great place but i like the other business around it. When i take my boxer in for a bath, Its like dropping my dog for a day care while i treat myself. oh, and $23 for the works is a damn good price. It included bath, nails, and brush. I also usually eat and pamper myself too. Katsu-ya is just next door and i like to get an hr massage at siam day spa which is a small walk. This pet store is truly as good as it gets!!! They stock just about every pet product ever made, the customer service is exceptional! They went out of there way to special order me a bag of dog food that they don't even normally stock and beat the price i use to pay for it! I have nothing but good things to say and could keep going on but I'll leave it at this...I'm still in awe over the prices and customer service because it is so rare to come by now a days!!!
