So I have what some may consider to be an aggressive dog. Her breed is Akita. While they are not the ideal dog of choice for a first-time dog owner, they are an amazing, smart and loyal dog. My dog is a 100 lbs. + and a sweet heart. I have placed a lot of training in her and she is walked twice daily, so she has a routine and her behavior is always supported and adjusted when needed. However, upon receiving her socialization test, I was concerned. To my surprise she was well received by the dogs and staff at Sam's Green Paw (SGP). She has spent more than 5 years attending their daycare & boarding when my schedule requires it along with occasional grooming. A good friend recommended Sam's to me for daycare boarding, and I'm so glad we started coming here! My pup historically was never a fan of daycare - she would just sit and wait for me to get back. At Sam's, she is constantly engaged and stimulated by both the other pups and the staff. The small dog area is so nice, spacious, and well-let / maintained. The dropoff intake is super thorough, the staff is always super sweet and attentive, and the late pickup option is a godsend. The cameras make it very easy to check in as well. And if you know you're going to be using a lot of daycare / boarding days, I highly recommend getting one of their packages. I'm a professional dog groomer who recently transitioned to mobile grooming. Before that, I worked at a salon offering boarding and daycare. My 9mn old dog has attended daycare since she was 3 months old and has always done great with other dogs. Since I switched jobs, Sam's Green Paw was the closest option, so I wanted to get her set up before traveling. Before the temperament test, I explained everything about her honestly. I told them she's never shown aggression toward people but can be fearful of men. When she was 3 months old, two dogs at her old daycare fought, and a male coworker roughly pushed her aside while breaking it up. Since then, she's been nervous when men reach for her. I was told she'd start with a one-on-one assessment, but that didn't happen. Instead, they immediately placed her in a yard with three male handlers who spent nearly an hour chasing her, trying to pet her. At times one, two, or all three were following her. No one crouched down or let her approach calmly, they hovered over her, overwhelming her. If one male was stressful, adding two more made it worse. She's 30lbs, a small to medium size, and has always been grouped with smaller dogs elsewhere. When I mentioned that, I was told "Here, she's large," which felt dismissive and gaslighting. As someone who works in this field, I know the importance of reading canine body language and respecting thresholds. If a dog is fearful, good handlers adapt! often by having a female step in. Instead, they pushed her past her limit. After nearly an hour of being cornered, she finally gave a small warning, which was valid self protection after so much pressure. She's never bared teeth, bitten, or lunged at anyone before this. The male handler even wore a hoodie! something that can look intimidating to a fearful dog. They refused to move her to the small dog side or allow a female handler to test her separately. Ironically, if I hadn't mentioned her fear, they probably would've placed her with the small dogs, where she would've quietly observed or played without issue. Instead, they seemed determined to prove a point, disregarding her comfort. I'm especially disappointed because aside from the years of experience, I've worked hard to earn my certification through the only state recognized grooming school in California, where I was trained in reading and handling anxious, fearful, and aggressive dogs. Seeing handlers ignore clear stress signals, whale eyes, panting, head ducking, avoidance, was upsetting. When I handed her leash to Jackie and my dog tucked her head slightly, Jackie immediately labeled her "reactive." That isn't reactivity, it's fear. There's a difference between aggressive, anxious, and afraid. A reactive dog lunges or bites when triggered. An anxious dog avoids. An afraid dog shuts down or flees. My dog was clearly avoiding and trying to escape, yet they didn't stop the test or adjust their approach. Instead, they kept pushing until she felt forced to warn them. That's not fair handling, that's creating the behavior you claim to be testing for. To make matters worse, I recorded the entire temperament test. In the video, Jackie pushes my dog off her several times, physically pushing her down instead of calmly redirecting. That's not how you build trust or assess temperament. Despite everything, my dog did great with the dogs and passed her test elsewhere, where the staff actually accommodated her needs and avoided forcing male handlers to corner her. That contrast says everything. I'm sharing this so the company and its handlers understand the difference between a reactive dog and a scared one, and to emphasize the importance of compassion, patience, and correct handling. What happened here wasn't a fair temperament test, it was an unnecessary ordeal for a young, sensitive dog who simply needed understanding. read more

My dog had not been to the groomer in a while so she had considerable amount of mats. The groomer called me prior to the service and explained the process of cutting without causing her stress. We've been coming here for five years without any issues ever. Not only have they now increased their prices and let us know ONLY as we came in to have our dog groomed rather than when we booked the appointment, but we had the terrible experience of being scammed by this place. We drive an hour and a half here to get our dog groomed because we've been going here for so long and always pay for a straight through so our dog doesn't have to worry as he stresses out when there are other dogs barking. When we came in to pick up our dog after his grooming, he looked like he was just washed and blow dried. There was no visible cut as it has previously been for 5 years and has been written in their notes! They told me that I can come back and get him regroomed, but that would mean I would have to drive an hour and a half in traffic there and an hour and a half back to fix a job that they messed up on. My dog has always had a good cut from here so the one time he didn't, I was surprised since we didn't change any of the notes for how to groom him. They claimed that different groomers have different styles of cutting, but for five years I have never had an issue with any of the groomers and they couldn't even own up to their fault so they blamed me for not having a custom groomer at their salon. When I had asked for a refund of my straight through fee because I would now have to have my dog go back in and suffer another 30 minutes while my toddler cried in the car while we waited for him to be done,they said that they did the job well and they will not offer me a refund as the job was done. Is the job done if they have to take my dog back for 30 more minutes to get his haircut the proper way as it has always been done for 5 years? In what world does that mean JOB DONE? What is the point of paying extra for a straight through? You are just scammers!!! My poor dog had to stress and suffer another 30 minutes with dogs barking because they messed up. On a few occasions, we've had to board JJ here and they've answered the call. I'm not sure what the going rate for competitive services are but I know that they do well and we trust leaving him here. The staff is nice and very knowledgable. JJ is not my dog but I like that they maintain records of his health, allergies and grooming requests. Whenever I drop him off it's a good sign that he gets excited when we arrive. I like to look at the monitors that show the play areas for the dogs. There are always people there to welcome your pet and make you feel at ease. It's nice speaking to other customers because they give me the idea that this place is good for them and their pets. It is essentially a one-stop shop because not only do they do boarding here, they do grooming, training, and daily walk service in-house. You can tell that the staff is full of dog lovers and that they enjoy their work because they definitely make you feel like your pets will be taken care of while in their possession. Every time I've come to pick JJ up he has looked clean and I love the little bandanas that they provide after he's groomed. Boarding can be costly at $50 per night but at least we know he's taken care of. He's excited when it's time to pick him up but I can always tell that he's been physically and socially stimulated because he's always tired after having so many activities and playmates. I don't know if other places have the astroturf area outside of their facilities but it's a nice touch. When the dog is out, in the words of the Pointer Sisters "I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it" JJ always stops and marks his territory before we ride off for our adventures. The place is very clean, well organized and I feel comfortable recommending it as a crown jewel for your dogs and peace of mind. read more

The person running my card sitting behind the counter is totally useless. I was charged for services that simply never happened. I also later found out they didn't wash my boys properly so that has lead to antibiotics for a skin condition they never had. I don't post many reviews, but felt it was important that I shared my wonderful experience with Sam's Green Paw. My dog is not a fan of getting groomed. Even after she didn't make it easy for them to bathe her (I came to pick her up), they went out of their way to wait and were able to calm her down enough to get her trimmed better than she has been by anyone else. The staff made sure to keep updating me on how she was doing while I waited. I liked this place for grooming until my dog came home with kennel cough. She gets an annual bordatella treatment. My hairdresser shared that her dog came home with kennel cough twice. She gave them the benefit of the doubt. My doggy day care reported multiple dogs had to stay home after getting kennel cough @ Sam's. My dog wasn't symptom free for 6 weeks.
