Convenient location but price gouging. They sell the Gorilla packing tape with dispenser for $13. You can get on Amazon for 8.99. And if you want a refill of tape forget it. You have to buy it with the dispenser for $13 because they don't sell the refills. I can get refills on Amazon for $4.50 each. They have some cheap alternative package tape that's $3 but it's terrible. Peels off the box, flimsy and hard to find the edge of the tape and peel when needed. If they'd stock the refills of Gorilla packing tape for $5 or less then it would be such a big deal. I just think it's poor business practice to not sell refills and charge triple the going rate read more

Love this place! It's my go to local store for many things. We found almost everything we needed when we first moved in and fixed our place up a couple of years ago. Everything we needed from toilet pipes, wax seals, shimmies, paint supplies, garden tools, deck screws, of course there's the one or two things you won't find here, but for as small as they are they sure have most of what I need. read more

Recently went to get a weed eater. And the guy asks us to wear masks we went out and got our masks and walk back in. When we walked back in the guy then said if you had masks then why didn't you wear them in the first place. I tell the guy because we don't have to it's not a law. The guy flips outs and gets in me and my girlfriends face telling us we had to leave now. what happened to social distancing. I told the man why we are wearing masks like you asked. The man was very rude. This is not my first interaction at this hardware store that was negative. Will never come back trying to find stuff they don't even carry anyways. read more

Great little hardware store, big improvement since the new owners took over. It seriously has almost everything you need for repairs and projects around the house. The prices are fair too for a small mountain town hardware store. I'll gladly pay an extra 10-20% (often the same price) to not have to drive down the hill. Helpful staff too. The old store was fine, but it was clear the owner had checked out and wasn't restocking anything until they sold. I will do my best to be positive. I went to get a 4'x8'x5/8" sheet of sheetrock, but they only carried 1/2"; my plumbing drainage system in my 1936 built home has 1- 1/4" drain pipe. I know current plumbing codes typically like 3" for main lines. They have a ton of 1-1/2" and up in size, but very little of the size I needed. I did use a bushing to go up to 1-1/2" and accomplished my repair. Not sure how code feels about what I did. Anyway, they seem to be the only hardware store here in Running Springs ca. For that I am grateful. However, I noticed another comment that stated," they have everything." Probably everything that shopper needed, but and now that I think about it, no one has everything, but they are limited by their physical size. They are my go- to hardware store, as I live .5 miles from there. read more

Keep driving down to another store to buy your snow supplies! This place is over priced compared to the other stores that you'll be passing by just a little further down. I came here this past Sunday with my boyfriend to experience our first time in the snow together. As we were driving up we saw signs that said "chains needed" so we stopped at the first store we saw with the sign that said they carried wheel chains. We came in and the lady there said we absolutely needed wheel chains and there will be no refunds. It was weird because after my boyfriend asked her do 4-wheel drive vehicles need it? And she said "most likely". So before the purchase she seemed so sure we needed wheels chains then after she didn't give us a straight answer. Mind you, shes already taken a look at our vehicle to see which chains we needed. It was a total of $79.90 for the two supplies we needed to chain our wheels. Once we arrived to our lodge which was ten minutes away, we found out that chain wheels are not needed unless there's heavy snow which there won't be for a couple of days. I called Rusty Hammer and spoke with an older man and told him how I was just at his store less than an hour prior and if I can just exchange it to something more useful. I didn't ask for a refund, just an exchange. We went back and forth on this because he kept telling me I needed it. He wasn't even the one who sold it to us yet he was so confident that we needed it. He told me that I needed it no matter what and I told him that I'm only staying here for one night and it won't be snowing so I don't need it and his reply was "you're out of luck". His attitude from the gate was nasty and you can tell that this store just wants your money. I recommend spending your money at a store where your business is appreciated! read more

LOLOLOL Jennifer, you have a hard wired alarm and couldn't find what you needed so you give them 2 stars? Maybe ... jus maybe ... when you have a really specific need and it is an unusual item, perhaps a lil more latitude is in order. Jus sayin. I have been able to find nearly anything I really needed here. Heck, they even had a spark-arrester for my chimney one year. Never expected that to be there. LOL You need a weird washer or nut or bolt to fit some old fixture? You need some part to fix your blinds? How bout that doohickey that will stop your toilet from continuously running? I'll bet a buck they got it. The shop is really well stocked for a small hardware store tucked in the mountains. I bought 2 snow shovels there 13 years ago and they are as good as the day I bought them. I have purchased simple tools and duct tape and been good to go. As for grumpy staff ... I am not naming names... personally, I like 'em. They can answer questions and steer you in the right direction and they can find ANYTHING in there. I have walked in the shop numerous times and thought.. I bet they won't have this but what the heck, I'll try cause I do not want to drive down and back up the hill. Then, VOILA! My husband goes here all the time as we are full-time locals here, and he's always found what he needs. The owner is very knowledgeable and if he doesn't know the answer, he knows someone who does. I've been a part time resident since 2012 and have found the Rusty Hammer to be a treasure trove of information regarding referrals for plumbing, electric and handymen. Not only that, they have saved me a trip down the hill many times by having just what I needed. As for the person commenting on "snow supplies" if the signs on the road say "Chains Required" (not needed) even though you may have a 4 wheel drive vehicle you must have them with you. This is my own personal experience with CHP check points. BTW I paid almost $90 for my set and that was down the hill! read more

This place gets five stars because the woman working there, despite being super grouchy and refusing to help us put on our tire chains, stepped in after she saw my husband and I struggling and patiently helped us. I'm pretty sure she saved us from an icy death, and that's worth five stars to me. read more

So, I moved my family up here to Running Springs from Ontario. Been here one week. Needed some 1/4-20 machine screws and bolts for a desk we own. Looked up the nearest hardware store. Took a quick trip into town to visit Rusty Hammer. First plus was the welcome I received. There was an older gentleman and a younger lady and both greeted with smiles and inquired what help I'd be needing. Directed me as to where I can find what I needed right away, no attitude, just warm service. The only gripe I have is the prices, which is to be expected, considering there a small shop and the most locally available in a pinch. I did have to record the prices of each fastener (and some o-rings) on my iPhone notepad, which made the trip last about 5 minutes longer, but... not the biggest deal! All-in-all, its good to know there's a shop with a warm welcome that I can rely on for things I need. If they don't have it, it's because there a small mom'n'pop shop, so you can't knock 'em for that. However, I did see a lot of material there on my first visit, so I'll definitely be back! The greatest take away was the pleasant attitudes I got from the tenants. They really gave you that welcoming small-town vibe. read more

This is a great little store! I was in the area working on some specialized equipment and found I needed to replace a fuse that I didn't have any spares for. I called the store and spoke with Helene (sorry if I'm spelling your name wrong!) who graciously took the time to check her stock and confirm that she had one similar to what I was looking for. When I arrived she had the part I needed sitting at the register waiting for me. Saved me a LOT of time and hassle by saving me the trouble of having to drive a lot further to get what I needed!! Being a neophyte at many home improvement projects, I can walk in to the Rusty Hammer, talk to Helene, and get a quick how-to lesson on whatever the task may be. And if Helene doesn't have it, she'll write down the part number and tell you where to get it. I can even call ahead, explain what I need, and it'll be waiting on the counter when I arrive. Try that at Home Depot. I've also seen Helene go out on a limb to help folks who are in a jam. This is why I will always live in a small town. read more

Helene at the Rusty Hammer is super helpful. Her customer service is above and beyond. My car remote battery died and I couldn't get in my car. The store didn't carry the same size battery (although they had an array of other sizes that looked so close). Helene charged my batter with a 9V and wires. It worked. I got in my car but by the time I was ready to go it didn't start. She charged it again and it started. This is the short story but needless to say she saved me. The entire time she was calling around to other stores to see if they had the battery and even tried to secure a ride for me. She was just amazing. The kind of hospitality that you only find in small towns. Thank you Helene! read more
