Danielle at The Thoughtfulness Shop" was amazing. She created the design and finished the initial order of more than 30 shirts in various sizes and colors in a few days. As additional orders came in, she was able to finish them on the spot, she even sent one to a customer from Arizona. Tuesday 10/24 obedience class was the day of the Vanessa T-Shirt reveal. I visited several furniture stores and was greeted promptly, was able to see an enormous amount of furniture, especially at Furnitureland South, where I placed a large order. I was still looking for four or five items and stopped into Britt Carter to see if I could find anything that I would like as I am in the market for high end to luxury furniture. I walked in on Wednesday and the girl sitting behind the desk did not acknowledge me, not even a "hello" or 'can we help you." I walked the entire store freely snapping pictures of items that looked interesting to me assuming someone would approach me. I was the only customer in the store the whole time. That didn't happen and when I left, the same girl did not even look up from her phone to at least say goodbye. Nothing said. I realized at that moment that this would never be a retail establishment that I would do business with. So right in the parking lot, I texted a photo of the beautiful item I saw there to my sales person in High Point and I ordered that exact item at a significant lower price from her. As an interesting side note, the artist/decorator I am working with in my renovation told me he brought a client into Britt Carter recently - he was looking for a lot of items and they were completely ignored as well. He assumed it was because they were in work clothes having just completed an installation at the house. The client refused to stay since he was not being acknowledged and they went down the street to Job Youshaei and the client spent $80,000. My decorator did call and speak directly to Britt about this but it doesn't look like things have changed. I'm guessing that, even though their sign on the outside says that they are open to the public, they really prefer to work with decorators with appointments. If that is really what they want their business model to be, that is entirely their prerogative, but be transparent about it. I would not return except to get some great photos of lovely furniture that I could actually order elsewhere for a lower price and exceptional customer service.

Today when I was in town I took the opportunity to walk around a bit. There are a lot of nice looking housewares and decor throughout the store. It's actually quite large, and had an upstairs design area as well. Lots of pillows, furniture, wall art, and so on. The women in the store were busy with other customers when I and others entered, but once she was done she came and welcomed us to the store and asked us if we needed any assistance. There wasn't anything I needed and between buying some other home decor items and spending money with guests visiting, I didn't really want to spend any money and just wanted to take a look around. There was one item I found, a navy-colored, ~leather, mirrored tray; however, when the two sizes were $60 or $90 and when I turned it over I there was a big made in China mass production sticker on it, which was pretty disappointing for a store that has so many items that appear to be locally made or at least have a local flavor. I would visit again to wander or if I was looking for something specific (and I'll bet they have some lovely things around the holidays). However, I'd try to learn about the origins of what I was buying and if it's just an assembly line piece to help me determine what I'd be willing to pay for whatever I was purchasing.

In the past I've made several purchases here. It's a unique shop and I would dare say the only one in the area like it. Having said that, I don't give them much hope of remaining in business long since they don't appear to be opening any consistent hours. Yes I know it's hard to get staff currently but you just can't close your doors 7 days a week and expect to remain in business. What's really baffling is they've been closed on days when there's been lots of foot traffic because of the Farmers market. Even if you do hav upe staffing problems wouldn't you make a point of being open on those days when you know you would get lots of people walking main Street? I've stopped by twice in the past 4 weeks and they have not been open. Yes they have a sign posted in the door to check online to see what hours they might be open that week. But what kind of business practice is that? How do you expect to develop the foot traffic to keep your store open if you're never there? I typically tried to stop in every time I'm in Grayslake. I don't always buy something however the last two times I stopped I actually was looking for some gifts to purchase from local shops. You can't buy local if local is never open.
