We stayed at the rustic cottages over Labor Day weekend and it was a great get away for our big group! We stayed in the Lakeview Cabin and had a big group of friends staying in the big cabin behind us. The location was perfect as it it located right across the street from Moondunes beach. The grounds are really nice and each cabin has a parking spot in front of it. The cabins are really clean and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. There is a gas stove with a thermostat in each cabin. The staff is really nice and always available for any needs you might have. Some cabins have kitchens, and for those that don't there is a communal grill. Big cabin had its own grill and kitchen as well. read more

Beautiful cottage! It was our first time at lake Tahoe and decided to spend Christmas here. Cabin was what we expected and more. It was clean had everything grime pots and pans to wine glasses. They even provided dish soap and laundry soap. The cabin had a side yard that sloped down so we didn't need to leave for the kids to go sledding. Conveniently a safeway is right down the street. This was an absolutely perfect choice for our overnight stay in Tahoe. My boyfriend heard about Rustic Cottages through a friend, and we decided to book two studio cabins (one for us and one for our friend and her boyfriend). The booking process was very simple and straightforward, done online on their website. Reservation is confirmed and sent to you via email, and nothing else needs to be done! Check-in time is at 4pm, check-out at 11am. We were running late because they closed I-80 that afternoon and we had to take a detour around the East side of Tahoe, which delayed us about 4-5 hours! I called the front desk and they were extremely understanding, and they let us know that we could check in any time as their office closes at 9pm. When we arrived, we were greeted very kindly by who we believed to be the owner! He was very sweet, introduced us to their extensive movie list, and showed us their complimentary treats. They had freshly-baked brownies and cookies, hot cocoa, a variety of teas, and personal mugs that you were allowed to take home just for staying with them! The cabins themselves were excellent. Very warm (thanks to the fireplace), very clean! Very well-kept. The neighborhood was very quiet, and we slept very soundly through the night. Overall, a very, very wonderful choice! I lucked out & got to spend my birthday here. We arrived on the day they officially opened after being closed due to Covid-19. This time we stayed in the Bijou, one of the smaller cottages. Was perfect for my husband & I and our pup. They are still providing evening snacks (cookies & brownies) and breakfast. Now you don your mask, order your breakfast & eat outside or in your cabin. I thought the staff should have masks on, especially the one cooking & serving food. There was a juvenile bear roaming around but we didn't see it at all. The beach across the street is open but is still not pet friendly. read more

The Rustic cottage is cute, simple and quaint. We had multiple cottages for our family gathering. The lake and beach is just across the street which is very convenient. They host a fabulous breakfast in the morning and have all day cookies / brownies (which the kids loved). A ping pong table for fun matches sits under the giant trees and a large grass area with a bbq and picnic tables. The rooms each had a kitchen & a fireplace. We stayed for 4 nights in the Yosemite cabin with our dog. The cabins are really cute and comfortable; well appointed with hair dryers/iron/ extra bedding if needed. In the office they offer everything from toothpaste, soap, razors, coffee and treats. The beach across the street is fine but not dog friendly (though saw people with dogs). The only thing is it's not really walking distance to any restaurants, which of course is not the fault of the place. This appears to be a family owned/run business which is very unique these days and lends to it's charm. read more

Place was great. Rustic but perfect and nice for our last minute getaway with our old dog. Great location too with walking distance to a local beach. We stayed in the Manzanita suite which was perfect for 4 adults. We were able to cook outside and eat on the deck of our cottage. They have all basic cookware, so that was nice to make breakfast there. The free coffee mugs was a sweet touch. Love this place would book it again. read more

We love this place! It is truly rustic and homey just how we like it.... just how we LOVE it! There are so many cabins to choose from but our all time favorite is the Spooner. One of the reasons why we love this location is because the staff is so accommodating. On one of our visits we needed foil, Corey was "johnny on the spot" and got us what we needed right out of their breakfast kitchen. On our visit this past weekend, we didn't need housekeeping but we did need some paper products and they were brought down to us by one of the office staff. The booking process went well the receptionist went above and beyond to find a room that was pet friendly could fit our kids and 86 year old grandma. I take back every good thing I've ever said about this place. The owner has two faces, and DO NOT be fooled by the happier of the two. My family has been going there, traditionally every single year, pandemic or not, for around 18 years. We are a positive, happy group of people who always decorate our cabins for the 4th of July, meet other guests, and have invited many new people who also made it a tradition to give them business. We always had such a great relationship with the owner and staff. This year we saw the other face... the nasty, rude, ungrateful face of someone with no legit reason for such face towards a very large group of people who have supported his business for so long. We were turned away this year while trying to make our annual week long reservations, and were told we we're not welcome there anymore. That it's time for us to move on and that there's plenty of other nice cabins at Tahoe where we should go instead. Jaw dropping news to a group who has never done anything wrong or deserving of this. We have no idea why this has happened and the owner just uses foul language towards us when we calmly try to ask what is going on and what happened. We are completely confused and at a loss for words. We have so many memories here from celebrating our 4th of July weeks, spending last vacations with older family members, and celebrating gender reveal parties for our children. It's very sad that's it's come to this.. You never know who you're dealing with in life. Those who you feel are one type of person can immediately switch on you. We sat on the porch each morning with a cup of coffee and our dog and enjoyed the view of the lake (pet friendly with small additional deposit!) They have tons of activities to do on property, but the place is gorgeous enough to sit at their picnic tables, swings, or even on your own front porch and take in the fresh air and nature. I'm not sure where to even begin with this business. On November 26th we booked a cottage to rent for December 26-28th. On December 11th a updated California stay at home order went into effect which clearly states lodging and hotels were NOT to honor or allow in-state travel reservations that were "non essential". On December 14th we called and canceled our reservations due to this stay at home order. We received an email confirming cancellation due to covid restrictions (absolutely no mention of being charged a fee on the phone or email cancellation confirmation, and I didn't think twice about it since this was a state mandated order, not anything in my control.) Fast forward to January 15th, 20 days after my original reservation dates, I see a charge for $196 dollars from this business. When i called to ask why the lady inform us it was from our stay because we canceled less then 21 days before our stay...We asked to have the owners call us back ASAP....I am still waiting for a call back. I would ABSOLUTELY NOT RECOMMEND THIS TERRIBLE BUSINESS TO ANYONE. I understand that small business are struggling during these times, however so are families, and that 200$ was my hard earned money. If you're thinking of booking a trip to North Tahoe I would highly recommend staying clear this business. If the unknowns of covid happen with state mandates, you will still be charged. read more

We had a wonderful stay at the Rustic Cottages! The cabins are exactly what you need and vary from cottage to cottage so you can find the one that works best for you during your stay! My husband and I (and our 6 month old puppy) stayed at the Emerald Cottage and it was perfect for what we needed. We had a bedroom with a queen size bed, living room, and small kitchen. Furthermore, the cottages are located DIRECTLY across the street from a beach. So convenient! Our cottage was the first cottage on the main road and there was MASSIVE construction going on (that no one was aware was going to happen) from 9PM to 7AM every night during our stay. Marshall, at the front desk, was EXTREMELY generous and moved us for a few nights to an unoccupied cabin, away from the construction, so we could have a couple nights of good sleep while we were there for the week. It was INCREDIBLY kind and we were extremely grateful. The entire rest of the staff is always asking if we need anything. There's free coffee (and mugs!), brownies, cookies, candy, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and movies at the front office. Honestly, it's a great place to stay and we look forward to staying there again! read more

Rude, Rude, Rude - Must read entire review. Our family has vacationed at this location yearly since 2006, this would have been our 14th year. I called to book our family trip for this coming summer (2020) and was told by the man who answered, "I don't have time to talk to you" and hung up. First off, what person would talk to a client like that. My cousin also mentioned when he called to book the person was very rude and hung up on him as well. I was weary to completely believe it since we had vacationed there so many times, until I experienced the same rude behavior. Next day (and because we have been going there so long), I called back and booked my room with a female staff member. During our call I mentioned the experience I had the night prior, and stated that the man who answered was rude. After being all booked, credit card taken and all we hang up. Within 2 minutes I get a call from the man from the night prior saying he was "not rude and we don't need people like you here... I am canceling your reservation". What kind of establishment does that and allows there staff to treat their clients in this manner. Unacceptable. Completely unacceptable. read more

I am appalled at the way the owner of the company handled this situation. My PARTNER - yes we are a gay couple - thanks Marshall for your homophobic quotations. We had to postpone our wedding due to COVID-19 and this so called nice man was immediately incredibly rude when we called to ask if there was anything he could do about refunding our friends reservation. He was not nice from the beginning, he was very aggressive, said he didn't care about us or our business. My wife's family and family friends have been staying at this place for years and he could care less about it. He hung up on her when she called and she didn't even raise her voice once. So yes, I called back and I didn't even get loud when I clearly I could have, but I was stern and yes I cursed, oh well. Yes her mom wrote a letter of complaint once in the 15 years that they've been going there and he could not stand having someone express their concerns or poor experience so this is how he handled it. You pride yourself of good customer service and when it comes to something real and giving someone their money back due to a global pandemic, you become a bigot, disrespectful and mean person. BEST PLACE EVER. It's true: the brownies are delicious. The staff are incredibly friendly. It's so inexpensive that we felt we were cheating someone! We had a kitchenette, so we walked to the grocery and enjoyed dinner "at home." There are adirondack chairs on the lawn, so you can sit and have coffee outside and look at the mountains. Borrow a hibachi, movies, even croquet sets! Make your own waffles for breakfast, or have a delicious fresh-baked muffin. Why stay in a hotel/motel and listen to the neighbors' TV through the walls when you can stay in a cottage? Free cable, TV/VCR, and all the amenities you'd get at a bed and breakfast at motel rates. Even the postcards are free! I'd recommend this to anyone visiting Tahoe. I only wish I'd known about the whipped cream. read more

Thank you Rustic Cottages for a really nice 4 day stay on the north side! Our room was very cozy and comfortable. The owners and staff were all very friendly and super accomodating. When I mentioned to the front desk that our exterior porch light had burned out, the owner appeared 2 min later to replace it. Among the perks... - Freshly baked cookies and amazing brownies - Wood burning firestove with igniters and ample firewood - Rooms equipped with stove/oven/microwave and frig/freezer. - Complementary breakfast - Great selection of over 500 movies - Free use of sleds (coasters) and snow shoes and free lift tickets to Donner - Free wifi Our room was a bit on the small side so I'd recommend going with something larger. Experience overall was really nice. Just a couple minor things to note... - Our bathroom sink had separate faucets for hot and cold water which made it a bit uncomfortable for washing up. We tended to use the kitchen sink instead. - The kitchen area had small table and three cast iron patio seats. It would have been more comfortable if we had indoor dining chairs with padding. All in all, we'd highly recommend the place as a truly nice experience at great value. read more

I just had an awesome birthday weekend in Tahoe - thanks, in part, to this lovely charming place. All 10 of us stayed at the Tahoe Vista Lodge in two separate suites. The suites (Bristlecone and Evergreen) were spacious enough that we didn't feel cramped at all, but cozy enough we felt just right at home. The front desk @ the lodge was super friendly. They didn't even care that at times, all 10 of us just showed up at the front desk and looted all the brownies and cookies. And the souvenir mug was awesome too! We also had over 400+ movies to choose and borrow from (for free)! And somehow, "Nacho Libro" just seemed super hilarious, after a good satisfying day on the slopes, ending with some frou frou birthday cake (from Copenhagen Bakery in San Mateo) and Irish coffee with extra kick. I felted very blessed to have family and friends there with me, celebrating another year of growth! Living up to its name, the cabins (or suites) are definitely rustic and a little country in style. But definitely clean, comfortable and cozy, with hot water for shower, and working heater. (For the powderhounds, you know those are essential!) A real good bargain overall. I'd highly recommend this place, but just please stay away every last weekend in February. I intend on coming back next year and the years after, with a bigger crowd, for my special day. read more

We stay here or at their sister resort, the Tahoe Vista Lodge, whenever we visit Tahoe's north shore. The place is very family friendly --- there are free movie rentals and saucer sleds for use, as well as free brownies and chocolate chip cookies that always seem to be fresh out of the oven. Did you forget your toothbrush, toohpaste or razor? No problem, the front desk has plenty to spare for you. We've stayed there on our own and we've gone with several other families. The small collection of cottages was at one time a mining camp so they are positioned close enough to walk back and forth between them if you visit with friends. The cabins are quaint and cozy, the staff is very friendly and encourages visitors to make themselves at home. This is beginning to sound like the same story over and over. We stayed here in November and had a wonderful time. We booked a house over Christmas break and then Covid 19 came back strong . We called and told them we are in lockdown as they were. They assured us all was good and they would refund us. Well here we are at January and now they say there will be no refunds. My very good friends booked this place for some people to stay for their wedding. Due to covid 19 they could no longer have their wedding in tahoe anymore. When they contacted the business they refused to reschedule for them and told them they would be keeping their deposit. And used very crude language against this same sex couple. My husband and I have been going to Rustic Cottages for several years. Then when our son was two, we began our annual trek to Rustic Cottages to enjoy fun in the snow with him! The cottages are super clean and cozy -- just the right size for what we need. The kitchen is perfect for fixing dinner (a Safeway is a quick one-minute drive away, but note that it gets super busy after the slopes close). Breakfast in the cute lodge is delicious: make-your-own-waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage or bacon, fresh coffee, orange juice, cereal, muffins. The hospitality is excellent; they are eager to help and are very friendly! We love the fresh baked brownies and cookies, too. Yum! And how cool that during the winter you can borrow snow shoes! There are several places just a few short minutes away for hiking and sledding. Borrow games and DVDs from the reception desk (or use the fast wifi to watch on your own device!). The public beach access to Lake Tahoe is just across the street. The location is perfect for so many reasons! read more
