Ok either you get neighborhood joints or you don't. If you do Rustic Cabins is a shoe in for five stars. If you don't I'm sure there's a TGI Fridays around with your name on it. Rustic Cabins has been a Grosse Pointe hang out since, well forever. I'd heard about it, read about it and studied up on the Jack Kerouac aspect of it (he was there, maybe the road begins there?) But I had never been there. Well that mistake was corrected tonight. After a tour of the Ford Mansion and toney Grosse Pointe RW and I ventured south to GPP and Rustic Cabins. Now RW is a local and dialed in so I knew this was going to be great. In a row of hoi polloi (ish) shops stands Rustic Cabins. Rustic indeed from the outside and dive bar on the inside Rustic Cabins hits all my right notes. Atmosphere out the wazoo that can only come with time. Pool tables. Juke box and wait for it.....a cigarette machine! (Hipsters Google it). Still some smokers around so sell them some butts. Remember nobody likes a quitter! The place is fantastic. Locals coming and going. I met a few and it felt like old home week! Each buying a round for their friends (and me). Think Cheers but real. It was a quiet Sunday night but still a great time. Sports on TV, juke box cranking songs.. magic. Places like this are rare and can't be created with a plan, they just evolve. So check out this Grosse Pointe Park gem. If you get it you'll get it. There is something spectacular about dive bars, they feel like your grandmas house if your grandma lived in an old musty cabin with little light and draft beers. My grandmother did not but they all feel like home. The bartenders were tender and warm, the beer was cold, you can drink inside, outside, play pool, eat potato chips and bring in food from buschemi's next door. All wonderful options. It's odd to think this place is a reminder of my middle school days. A good friend of mine's parents or relatives ran this place. We would get a slice of pizza from Buscemi's next door and sit at a table, it would be a group of us kids inside this cabinesque building with all of the dead animals mounted on the walls. It's odd to say as kid, it strangely felt like a second home here somehow. I have gone back during my early college days and as an adult and it's not as cool as it was as kid. Glad they had PBR on tap and $1 pool. Upset they proudly displayed a Trump hat (noticed as we were leaving) and some kind of weird shrine to Mayor Kilpatrick's arrest (it's in Grosse Pointe not Detroit). Bar service existed, bathroom was shabby. read more

I've been here several times and this bar just does not have a friendly vibe. It's a neighborhood bar so I don't get it. The bartender is an a-hole and treats you like he's doing you a favor even waiting on you. Hey, it's a bar, you're the co-owner, treat your paying customers like you're happy to see them! I I've sat at the bar, at a table, played pool, gone out back to the patio, and never really felt like I jived with this place. Even the people at the bar aren't friendly - weird, who goes to a neighborhood bar and is rude? So unless one of my friends insists this is where they have to go, I hope I won't have to go back. read more

Rustic Cabins... If ever there were a map of America of historical bars to visit (and if anyone knows of one, email me!), Rustic Cabins would be on that list. As urban legend states, yes, this was an old hangout of Jack Kerouac. This should give you a scope as to how long this place has been around... my Dad used to hang out in this place. But it's not the sort of place where the youngest person in the place qualifies for Social Security. Far from it! Actually there's a healthy mix of people young, old, working and middle classes. It's this that would make it a fine stop on a nationwide bar hop; it also is a bit telling as to why Kerouac would've wanted to hang in this place... an awesome cross-section of many different people that mesh well together. (And really who can't bond over a few drinks?) The selection of drinks in this place is pretty standard for the area: anything you'd be looking for you'll most likely find. Beer snobs beware: you may go without your favorite micro brew. Still, for being in Grosse Pointe, the prices are killer (beers under $3 anyone?) and THAT'S a reason to put away the snob and bring out the fratboy! Honestly I give the place five stars almost solely on the merit of Kerouac. But really it's a comfy place to unwind, or a great place to steal a corner with your nearest and dearest talking about everything or nothing. I recommend ordering a tall Scotch (Oh they pour them tall!) and taking the booth to the extreme right of the front door. Yeah that one! Have a seat. Cool place-- but make sure you bring cash! This is a cash-only establishment. They have an Internet jukebox, but the white haired bartender has a tendency to take it over with his awful, poppy, top 40's music all night long. This is a great place for a drink and a game of pool. read more

This bar is an old time favorite in Grosse Pointe. I know people they have been coming here for years. If you grew up in this are it will not be unusual to run into someone you know at the Rustics. A lot of people come here to watch the game or for a night cup. I was here last week to watch the tigers game and ran into a few people I know. They have a pool table and also outdoor seating. The bartenders are always friendly. They only form of payment is cash but they have an ATM inside. Will keep coming here for sure. read more

There is something heartwarming in a place that is happy with who they are and doesn't try to be something else. The 'Sticks' is just such a place. It's a dive bar, pure and simple and has been since MY dad came here. A modest selection of drinks priced for the Gen X crowd who live in the Cabbage Patch section of town, a nice scruffy pool table that gets a lot of use and an eclectic selection of tunes on a scratchy jukebox complement a grease soaked 'food' offering. The clientele all seems to know someone who you know, if they don't already know you. The staff has a nice 'no nonsense' attitude that is a boon to the liver of a serious drinker and a balm to the hearts of couples, and the "if it breaks it needed replacing anyways' attitude towards the furnishings is nice to see in our cookie-cutter corporate chain orientated world. You will never find a 'basalmic drizzled whassis' here, you will never see a neon colored drink with an umbrella and a pinwheel in it here and if you ask for either, they might just toss you out onto Kercheval Ave. Expect to see some slacker in a soulpatch and a silly hat spilling his pitcher onto the concrete floor as he ducks to avoid a dart from the dartboard or a cluster of ladies out on the prowl with their wedding bands in their purses. It ain't the Whitney, it's a dive bar but a cleaner and cooler dive bar. No review can do this place justice, when I lived in Grosse Pointe I spent more time here than in my flat. It's like that scuzzy bathrobe you have, nice and comfy to slip into when your tummy hurts but not something you want the public at large to see you in. My wife and I planned to spend the evening enjoying the band here tonight. No such luck. We found an empty table that the bar person just cleaned off (there had been an number of empty glasses left on it). We thanked him and sat down. We listened to 3 or 4 songs, probably about 10 - 15 minutes when 3 guys come up to us and tell us that was their table and they had gone out for a smoke. You' got to be kidding.
