    Strawberry lemonade
    Analiea M.

I stopped in here hoping to get a water but after looking at the menu, I had to get myself a strawberry lemonade. It was very sweet, but super refreshing. I also got a pickle on a stick and these pickles were amazing! Super crispy and juicy. The service was also great, the guy at the counter was very helpful. He recommended the pickle lemonade which I'll definitely try when I'm back! Overall, good service and yummy drinks. It's something you really only stop at if you're already walking around in old town, as it is extremely hard to find parking in the areas. Especially on the weekend.

Located in the heart of 'Old Town San Diego State Historic Park' in the picnic area. Rust General Store is a must stop for us when we visit. This lil store takes you back to the 1860's. You will find housewares and a bistro serving Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Lemonades, Pickle-on-a-Stick, Ice Cream Floats, Fresh Cookies, Pretzels, Popcorn, and so many more goodies that you can enjoy right outside. I love seeing the friendly staff in such era-themed outfits, so unique and fun. They offer a Traditional Tea Service in their private garden on Saturday and Sundays at 2:30 PM by reservations. I enjoy their Iced Vanilla Latte with a Pretzel. Their fresh lemonades are so refreshing and so so good! Overall, it's always a good experience at Rust General.

Tries the prickly pear lemonade at $7 for a large. Thought it was sweet, but enjoyable. Cookies looked good.

Rust now offers afternoon tea in their backyard! The backyard area is decorated so cute and the vibes are so nice and pleasant. Super chill! There are different teas to choose from, scones, sandwiches, and the most decadent desserts. Everything was delicious. Our server was Ms Riley and she was delightful. Grab your girls, make a reservation, and enjoy a splendid afternoon. It's super shaded so even when it's warm, the backyard is comfortable.

Fantastic tourist store resembling the General Store from the old west! Lots of small items, tourist trinkets. One corner serves as a coffee shop as well. Ambience is rustic hence the name Good coffee and delicious Bavarian pretzels!

I was walking around Old Town for the day with a good friend, and we were craving a cold drink on an extra warm day in SD. We decided to check out their cafe/bistro inside! We got their fresh lemonade and cookies (tho I didn't see any vegan or GF options). They were both delicious and just hit the spot for us! My friend found their outdoor patio area, which we loved. A huge hidden patio tucked in busy Old Town. If you have a large group with you or looking for some peace and quiet, then you must check this outdoor area out. There are many wooden tables to choose from. Before we left, I spotted some cute summery kitchen towels. They were $12 and were good quality fabric, and so glad I got them. Cashiers for both the cafe and general store were fast and friendly. Most definitely support the Rust General Store!

If you like spicy, sweet and refreshing stop in for their specialty lemonade! Really friendly staff, and a nice gem in old town.

Date of visit: October 17, 2021 While continuing our tour of Old Town, we remembered that my mom mentioned that there was a store in Old Town that sold bottles of sarsaparilla. Now, I love the stuff (especially the Filipino brand Sarsi)... but it is extremely rare to find it in San Diego. So, after getting our candy fix from Cousin's, we set out to look for the store - and soon found that Rust General Store was the place we were looking for! Essentially an old-time themed mini mart, we saw that Rust was selling two different types of sarsaparilla - Sioux City (which had a bold flavor), and Jackson Hole Soda's Snake River (which was more sweeter). We tried them both - and while Kat liked the Snake River one, I preferred the Sioux City bottle. There's something about having a tall, cold bottle of sarsaparilla on a porch, and Rust General Store is a good location to do that. I want to go back some time to try their sandwiches and dill pickle on a stick.

This old shack made into a General Store was by far the neatest thing in Old Town San Diego! The pretzels are made fresh to order, coffee was great and love the fact the candy selection are Jared!

The first thing that caught our eye was the seasonal Tokyo Banana Latte, and we knew for sure we had to get it. When we went inside Asa, the space was spacious, with a lot of folks already inside hanging out with friends and studying/working. The interior was very Japandi, which was expected and very cute. We did not have a wait, and there was no line at 1:30 p.m. We ordered a couple of items to share among us. The service, by the way, was very friendly, and they were very open to answering any questions we had, which was awesome. Between the group, we ordered: * Miso Croque Monsieur: I wish this had a bit more ham, in my opinion. While the pastry itself is unique, I wish it were a bit less salty. The miso really shined through, but I was unsure if it was balanced and well-rounded. * Lime Tart: Probably our favorite thing here, actually! The brightness of the citrus stood out but was not overpowering. It had a light, custardy flavor. * Berry Melon Pan: Standard classic melon pan with a subtle berry filling. It is more of a coagulated consistency rather than a jammy interior like we initially thought, but not bad. * Chicken Katsu Sandwich: The shokupan had a nice bounce, and their chicken was nice and juicy. * Matcha Tiramisu: Even though I am an avid lover of matcha, this might have been too much. The topping of matcha made the dessert bitter, and we were a bit surprised by the lack of ladyfingers. * Tokyo Banana Latte: Best banana latte, heads up! I am already a big fan of Tokyo Banana, so this really took the cake. The banana milk was not too sweet, just the way I like it. I would say that I did not think it stood out enough to rave to folks about coming here, but overall, not bad.

Their cakes may be pricey, but…read morein my opinion, for the amount of work, effort, and quality of ingredients, I think they continue to be fair. For example, some other specialty bakeries/shops are charging similar prices for cakes and cheesecakes that are much simpler. In comparison, Extraordinary Dessert cakes take 3-4 days to make, have 6-8 alternating layers, and are typically adorned with edible gold and/or flowers. The key is to find which items you like and which are okay to pass on next time. What we ried this time: -Match Misu Cake (7/10): ricotta cake layers soaked in matcha and layered with marscapone whipped cream. This one was pretty good and ranks in my middle to high range. I only wish there was more matcha flavor (maybe if you dine in and get the sauce, this would help) or the matcha was paired with another flavor ... either go fruity (maybe a raspberry sauce, strawberry pieces, white peach pieces, or like a peach oolong cream layer) or go chocolately/coffee (maybe had some crushed up chocolate covered espresso beans). My go to's: -Ivoire Royale (10/10) - my ultimate favorite still. If you like light desserts, white chocolate, berries, and moist vanilla cake, thus one is for you. Classy and unpretentious -Shangrila (10/10) - my other favorite and will make you feel like a princess with all the pink chocolate curls. A little bit adventurous and innocently elegant. Ones to skip: -Au Chocolate / La Bete Noire / Dame Chocolate - get the Viking instead. That's my favorite of all their chocolate cakes -Lemon ricotta - get the Passionfruit Ricotta instead -Torta misu - the matcha misu is better. The tortilla misuse made me want a regular piece of tirmaisu than a cake version -Coconut cream - not bad, not amazing though

Instead of simply saying they were unable to accommodate the request or offering another option, we were told to "go somewhere else," despite already spending the amount we did . Hard to find many other places. They also have tea and coffee, and my husband and I LOVE their hojicha latte, which boasts a nice earthy-to-sweet ratio. If you want a grounded flavor without getting another coffee, try the hojicha latte! This is just below the price for an Extraordinary Desserts cake slice, which is not only bigger and more complex, but also made fresh. We noticed the crepe cake slice we got had that dusting of ice sparkles, indicating it was frozen and defrosting, and additionally, as it defrosted, the more it started leaning. Lines are always better with a friend and even though we all arrived before opening there was still a healthy line. I was really excited, to finally get to check them out, I saw on their socials that a new chef had taken residency and that they came with some Filipino flair. As a fellow Filipino I definitely wanted to support. I ended up ordering a lumpia roll, ube butter ensaymada, a halo halo tart and a egg sando sandwich along with an iced matcha with honey, with tip my total was $48, which isn't horrible considering these are meant to be higher quality pastries. My girlfriends and I found a table and decided we would share, I shared my egg sando sandwich and the lumpia roll, while they shared their ube butter ensaymada and the turon kouign amann. My matcha, was a horrible, it was a muddy green and really lacked any matcha flavor, my friend didn't like her matcha either and she had the miso caramel matcha. I didn't even finish my matcha and I can really take one down. We joked about how we should have opted for the orange juice instead. Now for the pastries, I was really underwhelmed by them, the ensaymada was just fine, I honestly cannot remember the taste of it, it lacked something. The egg sando sandwich, the filling was plentiful and flavorful BUT the bread was dry, was that potato bread? The texture was off for me and I ended up just scooping out the filling and eating it like that. Where the sando had a good amount of filling the lumpia roll lacked it, it was so sparse I figured it would be more like a sausage roll so I was taken aback by how little there was in it. Flavors were fine, the pastry was buttery but I just wanted a little more. The one pastry we agreed was better than the rest was the turon kouign amann, the crunchy bits of sugar was so reminiscent of turon but the filling, for me was like uncooked banana bread batter, that threw me off entirely. It was better, but not the filling. So overall, I would say it was okay, I guess for the costs it just didn't meet my expectations.

Lots of chocolate and I think they added toffee in it too. The middle section had pistachio frangipane (or it looked like it) with coarsely chopped pistachios that brought another layer of crunch! Then to top it all off, it had pistachio cream on top of the cookie! I only wish I got another one. CAPPUCCINO It was okay. But love the foam! It was frothy and foamy! PAVLOVA The meringue was a bit too hard and too sweet and the pastry cream was overwhipped. Loved the fresh fig and blueberries though. I was looking forward to eating pavlova and this was very disappointing! KOUIGN AMANN Very buttery and sticky! Crispy on the outside. Every bite was not dry, but chewy. There was this sticky and chewy texture that wasn't unpleasant, yet it wasn't fully flaky like a croissant. But glad it was not dry! The kouign amann was not as tall like others I've tried, but I preferred it this way because it was not dry. The last kouign amann I had from Bread Lounge was dryyyy. But bought mine at a coffee shop too. PAIN AU CHOCOLAT Crispy on the outside, but I must have toasted a bit more, so the outside was a bit more toasted than desired. Inside was good. Good dark chocolate. BUTTER CROISSANT Really buttery, flaky, crispy! Ate it next day, so reheated it in the toaster oven to bring a more crispness all around. Really enjoyed this! Adding butter and jam is so good! LEMON MERINGUE Meringue had a strong eggy smell and flavor, the lemon was tangy, but not enough to rid of the eggy smell and flavor. The tart was hard and almost stale. I took a few bites and threw the rest out. PAIN SUISSE Chocolate flavor. Crispy on the outside, fluffy like a light spongy cake inside. Enjoyed this! CUSTOMER SERVICE Got there early afternoon. There was only one person in front of me. Good service overall. Quick service. Hits and misses of the various pastries I've tried. It will not deter me from trying their pastries though, as the really good ones were really good! Would love to return! Especially for that Choco Chip Pistachio Cookie! The employees are a mixture of a well oiled machine and great customer service. I was worried about…read moremy meter running out and was asking if i could run out real quick to add more but they coordinated on the spot and finishes my drink by the time i completed my payment. They were amazing!!! I got the biscoff matcha latte with the biscoff foam and a few slices of cake. It was soooo good. I'm going try to plan for some relaxing time next time. The inside was beautiful and peaceful. Looks like a great place to start my day.

Hinar in downtown is such a beautiful and aesthetic spot. I love their earthy color palette (I want…read morethat paint color in my house lol) and the overall vibe of the cafe. The main seating area is almost always full, but there's more indoor seating in the back through the hallway (where the bathroom is), plus some outdoor seating to the side. The drinks are really good. I always get mine half sweet, and the flavors are consistently great. They also have a ton of cute, picturesque desserts. They're a bit too sweet for my taste, but you can tell a lot of care goes into making them and they're definitely tasty. Parking can be tricky downtown, and it can get busy with lines, but it's totally worth it for the drinks, desserts, and overall ambiance. FYI, they have a new location up north in Scrips Poway, it's cute but slightly different aesthetic (umm more industrial) and is in a strip mall, so, way more parking!
