So, I'm pretty sure this place is designed to keep the riff-raff out. And by riff-raff I mean, college students, aannnddd that's the point of view you're getting from my review. Maybe a more seasoned consumer would rate Russell's more highly, but that's not me. This place is a little larger than my college dorm room with crates and shelves of alcohol stacked waist high. I get super nervous turning around in this store for fear of knocking lots of things over. It's impossible to see the bottom two shelves of liquor against the wall, and the labels are hard to read from the distance, and because they're crammed so closely together. I don't remember ever seeing a price sticker unless something was clearly marked off on sale. There's a pretty good wine selection-- the liquor selection is pretty basic; very well stocked but not very varied. Not a great beer selection in my opinion. For service-- I generally get ignored by the staff unless the proprietor is there. He's really helpful and sweet, and saved me $7 but telling me I should get a magnum instead of two standard size bottles. If only he were there all the time! read more

Pretty unassuming liquor store. I saw they were selling Firestone Walker's Parabola for a little cheaper then my hometown liquor store & had to investigate. The two staff working were very helpful. Not being from the area I wanted stuff I couldn't get in RI so they suggested some local craft beer I ultimately purchased. They even had a small but decent hard cider selection. Prices were on par with what I'm used to. I didn't care much for the set up. It's kinda cramped in there & I was unfamiliar with the layout. If I was a local I'd definitely come back again. read more

I'm a Hawaii resident, but have been going to school in Massachusetts for over 3 years now. I took time off to work before going to college and am older than the usual college student, but often I look the same age as a high school student. So, I completely understand when people need to check my ID. There's never been an issue with that! But when I came into Russell's the other day for the first time, one of the male employees (younger, fit) tried to scan my ID, which didn't scan right and came back and told me sternly that he'll be taking my permit away because it was fake. I've used this ID at every other store and bar. And it is my only valid ID that allows me to fly back home. He did not ask for another ID to check my age and verify. He just assumed I was some punk kid with a fake ID. I said that I had at least five cards, some credit cards and others, a school ID and an old state ID and gave him one, he could obviously see that I was of age, but still refused to let me buy anything. Although, thankfully I got him to give me my ID back. I wouldn't have any other way to even go back home to see my family if I couldn't get it back from him. The employee stressed his position of authority. I already know he works there. He didn't need to be rude and instantly suspect me trying to trick them. Along with that, they have a proud wall of fake IDs inside their store behind the counter. Instead of trying to help the customer out with a stressful situation, it felt more like they wanted to add a shiny, new Hawaii ID to their proud collection. Regardless, the older man who was working there was extremely friendly. He was a joy and helped us pick out drinks. I felt VERY welcomed when speaking to him. We were rushing to get last minute party supplies, which can be stressful, but he still made me smile. However, simply because of this interaction, I will never be coming back to this store. And I have never had this type of trouble from the several other liquor stores and bars I've gone to in the area. It was such an awful experience of anxiety to think that they could possibly take my one perfectly legal and valid ID from me without question and to be put under such heavy suspicion. I suggest going to Liquors 44 and Spirit Haus instead. Both have cheap prices and good selections and employees from both have always been helpful. read more

This is really a fine liquor store. The staff are knowledgable and they're very friendly. It's the liquor store where everyone knows your name! I agree with the sentiment that it's inhospitable to college students, but as someone who graduated college some time ago, I love that for once something in this town isn't catered to the kids. I would say it's like a smaller, more conveniently located (for the non-driver) Spirit Haus. The prices are comparable to Spirit Haus. read more

This liqour store seems,at first glance, to have a pretty good selection of wine and spirits. However, I've bought around 5 bottles of wine on recommendation of the owner, and they have alll been quite bad. The problem is, I assume, that the shop caters mostly to college students who buy beer and cheap spiritis. The wines sit there longer than they should, and they are genreally over-priced. I bought a bottle of wine on recommendation of the owener for 25 USD to commemorate the return of a friend, but the wine had gone bad and tasted like a weird portwine. When I came back to the store and told about my experience, the owner just told me to bring the botlle back next time. He didnt offer any excuse or compensation for the expired, expensive bottle. Unfortunately, my impression of the whole wine selection is that they are low quality wines (mostly rated below 3,5 at vivino) at a blown-up price. I would only recommend bying beer here. My friend and I threw a cocktail party and we wanted to provide "grown up" drinks so we knew we needed to stock the liquor cabinet. The owner and proprietor of the store walked us through each area of selection offering awesome advice on getting the highest quality options for the best prices. We spent a fair amount of money but we got a lot and we got great value and advice. We also picked up a couple of nice bottles of wine for a great price and some specialty beer. It was a great experience! I'll be back! read more
