RuRu's was such a fun time! I absolutely loved the outdoor patio. At the time that we went it was a bit slower so the vibe was more chill and laid back but I can definitely see it get busy on weekends or later on the night. But it's a perfect spot for summer nights, grabbing a drink and appetizers, or honestly, any occasion. The staff were super sweet and took the time to explain the menu, which was so fun. I loved the creativity behind the names of the dishes and the fresh ingredients they use. While we didn't get cocktails this time, I saw so many people ordering their margaritas, and they looked incredibly popular and yummy! We started the evening with the "Ma! The Meatloaf!" guacamole. It was super fresh and came in a great portion. Since it was Taco Tuesday, we took advantage of the special and tried "You're Going the Wrong Way," "I'll Have What She's Having," and "Prestige Worldwide." All of them were delicious, but the "I'll Have What She's Having" was definitely the favorite! We also shared the "Snoop-A-Loop" and added grilled chicken, which was the perfect addition. I had a nice dinner here with a new friend on Wednesday. We arrived around 730pm and sat outside. There was live music which was nice- a little loud but we could still here each other. Also enjoyed his set list- he even put some indie stuff (Mt Joy) in the queue which was awesome. They have a robust menu of tacos, quesadillas, burritos and more. Skipped the drinks that night but could definitely be tempted by a marg in the future. We each ordered a few tacos - I got steak, I forget what my friend got! But they came out super fast, lesss than 5min. I almost considered getting another but the one filled me up just fine. For $6 a taco, seems a little steep but they were filled with meat and it's nice that you can get them a la carts and not as an entire entree with rice and beans etc. Our server was friendly and gave good recommendations. My boss hosted my small work group here last night for dinner. As a group of 4 we walked in on Wednesday night around 4:45pm and got seated right away. They weren't busy at all. I came in through the back and parked in the back (that's where gps took me) so I never saw the front parking lot or patio area. It was too cold and windy to sit outside so we got seated upstairs or on the opposite room of the bar. We started with the Three Amigos chips and dip trio as well as four different drinks. 3 margaritas and a shaken not stirred. Not a bad start here. For my meal I ordered the Joe Dirt chicken bowl. Although a decent portion there is absolutely no flavor to this bowl. I didn't care for the white beans it really killed the taste for me and made the dish very bland. My coworker got the same and he scraped his plate so I'm guessing he was either really hungry or actually had the opposite opinion vs me. My boss got the Buller, Buller quesadilla and when it was delivered the plate presentation wasn't very appealing. She said she felt like something was missing. I didn't try her quesadilla but she didn't eat much of it and didn't want to take the leftovers. She also didn't care much for the white beans and lack of flavor. The fourth diner had the you had me at hello bowl with the tuna and she took most of hers to go but never voiced whether she liked it or not. We ordered another round of drinks and then got the churros for dessert. Overall, this was just a mediocre dining experience for me. The food was just ok but nothing I would come back for. read more

Ok, the service really needs help! There were only 3 tables having food and it was a nightmare trying to get our waitress to frequent our table to collect our order, refill beverages, and even get our check. The food was great, and I would certainly recommend it. The cocktails (I had two margaritas with top shelf tequila that were so great), the trio sampler with chips was so tasty, the guac was freshly made, and the tacos were mouth watering. I know the bartender and chefs take a great deal of pride in this place but the service does not match the expected experience. Lots of seating options inside and out, with a vibe that is very authentic with a twist. I will certainly come back and see if the next visit has the same issue with service, but my first visit left a lot to be desired with the attentiveness of the waitstaff. read more

I visited Ruru's for the first time. The staff was kind and friendly and parking was good. The food came out incredibly fast-within 5 mins of ordering! I didn't know what to expect with the food coming out so fast but it was hot, well seasoned, and fresh. I felt like the bowl was missing something-maybe a salsa or chips to tie it together. It was filling and I'd be willing to try other things in the future. At 7:00 on a Friday night, the wait was only 20 minutes which was actually only about 10 minutes. It gave us just enough time to grab a drink at the bar. The margaritas were really tasty but next time I'll ask for salt on the rim. I assumed it would come standard and nobody asked. We started with the dip trio. 5 of us shared it and still had lots of salsa leftover. The portion was worth the money. The tacos are wildly over priced in my opinion. $5.99 for one normal size taco and no side is a little steep. I settled on the waiter's recommendation - the Reuben Feffer bowl and was not disappointed! The bowl included flavorful and tender skirt steak with lettuce, rice, black beans, cheese, pico de gallo, lime crema and pickled onions. It was good and really filling. We then ordered a pitcher of skinny margs which did not taste skinny at all and tasted like a store bought mix. All of us got bowls/salads which were okay. One bowl was accidentally not put in and we had to wait an additional 30 minutes for their food to come out. Ruru's is a good Mexican spot in CLT. Plenty of options on the menu with funny names from movies. They have multiple dining rooms and a large outdoor patio with a bar. This place came highly recommended for the vibes, food and outdoor seating. Had a girls night and unfortunately it did not meet the standard. The entrance isn't easy to find and the signage wasn't visible. While the chips and dip trio isn't free, we were not made aware upfront that the charge would be split by each guest. I didn't eat it, because I didn't order it, but was still charged. The waitress was very curt and almost pushy. The trainee with her was great. Almost everyone at our table commented on the lack of seasoning and no one finished their food. Asking for different sauces and salt/pepper didn't help the flavors. I've been here a couple of times. Something to consider is that's it's not authentic Mexican, think more TexMex... heavier on the Tex and you won't be disappointed. We had the trio of queso (has fresh jalapeños), mild salsa and guacamole. Chips were warm and fresh which is a plus for me! Note: chips and salsa are not free. We got the ahi tuna salad was which flavourful. The peanut vinaigrette was a plus! We also got veggie fajitas and added steak. It comes with crispy tofu and the steak and tofu both have a cilantro marinade that I thought was a bit too heavy on the cilantro side and not enough spice or flavour. Food is decent, especially the tacos. Table service was soso. Management is terrible. Firstly, they do not have straws - when I asked why, they didn't know a reason, just that the owner has never had them. My son is disabled and requires a straw to drink - we had to go back to the car to get the large plastic straw that goes with his large cup, which wasn't a big deal. The big deal came after the meal when we left without picking up his straw. I drove immediately back less than 10 minutes later and was told that they cleared the table, saw it and proceeded to throw it away. The manager's answer to my question "why would you throw my disabled son's straw away?" Clearly it was left by a guest since they don't have straws....the answer - "why wouldn't I throw it away?" I pressed, indicating that I needed the straw back - which was met by "well, I'm not digging through the trash to get it" from the manager. I said no problem, I will dig, just show me where it is......upon which, she grabbed some latex gloves and dug it out.....got it back in the end, but the manager's attitude was awful. One of the loveliest, most quaint patios in Charlotte! The food was great, although I would've preferred a little more seasoning or marination on the tofu. My frozen margarita was delicious (strong but sweet!) although as a note, this restaurant does not offer any straws (so if that's your preference, considering packing your own reusable one). Food was good but the service was terrible. The waitress was slow at starting out order, the menu's were dirty with crusty left over food, and our plates were never picked up when we finished our food. I told the waitress I was going to order something to go and she said to wait 5 minutes before leaving. I didn't want to that after I realized the service was slow and the waitress would rarely come to our table so and ended up calling the front desk to order. I told the front desk that I was eating out back and wanted to put in my order because our waitress was MIA. She said, she would be with me in just a minute and HUNG UP ON ME. So rude. She didn't ask where I was sitting so how could she know who my waitress was?? Finally the waitress came and it took 20 minutes to get the food. Not ideal when you are done eating and you have a ton of dirty plates in front of you with bugs around. Then when it came time to pay, she split the appetizer on our bill - we didn't ask for that. One person was going to pay because the others didn't eat any. And, she had already chosen the 20% tip - as if she was that good. I'm surprised this place has only 3.5 stars. Completely undeserving for this hidden gem. Not having sangria on the drink menu probably dropped it down a notch for me but they were able to make one for my cousin and the drink I ordered instead (I forget the name) was absolutely fantastic. Plus, the atmosphere here is really nice. Great patio and festive decor on the interior. Our server was wonderful as well. The biggest win here though, was the food. Once inside and seated, my husband ordered the Long Duck Dong and I'll Have What She's Having tacos. I ordered the chicken quesadilla. Both were decent, and we appreciate that our meals were stuffed/large portions. For drinks, we got frank the tank in strawberry (which was so good) and in mango (also good but not as good as the strawberry flavor). Pleasantly surprised. I actually had never heard of this place. Love the location, nice low key vibe. Dawn our server was excellent. Very polite and attentive. We went during the 3/$12 tacos. I got the; I'll have what she's having - great! Lookin Good Louis - great! But it's shark week - not so good. A little overwhelming with sauce as well. I love this place because they have great drinks. But I came on a Saturday and it said on Google that they close at 11. It was about 10:30 and everyone was already ready to go. I felt rushed. Which is bad because Google says they close at 11. So just because of that I know now to not come on Saturday nights and if I do to come before 10. I understand that the restaurant is in an area where the crowd can die down and you would think to close early so I wasn't mad! She helped me get situated with two high chairs on the patio, and was attentive and kind but also gave us our space. Ruru's has been a staple in my Charlotte experience. Being a Charlotte native, this is a place that I continuously recommend to people and often visit. They have decided to change so much of the menu, and the changes are for the worst. The chicken is now beyond disgusting, the guacamole has become abysmal and I am completely not a fan. I am honestly scared to even try anything else, and I will not be returning. I find it crazy that the menu has been changed, when it has been working for years. This place is an absolute vibe during the summer! They don't do reservations but you should 1000% try to get a seat outside on the patio when the weather is nice. Service is super duper fast and very friendly! Hands down has the best margs in Charlotte! Guac is really good too! The tacos are a good portion too (not super tiny). The vegetarian tacos are decent (7/10) in my opinion. Wasn't a fan of the hot sauce though. Lots of free parking around the back too. Would recommend as a good date spot or place to celebrate and get food with friends. The chips were served with fresh salsa, guacamole and Queso cheese. This is a starter and not complimentary as with standard Mexican restaurants. The condiments were great and super fresh. As my entree, I had the chicken fajitas. The fajitas were okay. I can't say that I was blown away but simply, okay. My cocktail was okay. So, my thoughts are ... okay.
