Our tour guide was a retired high school history teacher and football coach with all sorts of interesting stories about the region. We passed Mount Baldy, the "living" sand dune that moves, at Indiana Dunes National Park and made it all the way down to a good view of the Century of Progress homes before making our way back. We also got to hear all about the ship, the Emita II, which is a historic ship from the 1950s, and about how it reached its current home. It was also very cute that Captain Jan had the kids come up and take turns at the wheel on the way back. There is a snack bar on the lower level of the boat, and there are restrooms on board. Free parking is available a little walk away - walk towards the Lighthouse Museum, as the dock is behind there. Definitely a great adventure!

Only complaint is there was a group with a person who should have been cut off from being served any more alcohol but her friends bought it for her. She was extremely obnoxious and loud and made a lot of people on the boat uncomfortable, especially ones with small children.

He is amazing with so much information that has helped me. He's an Encyclopedia of Notre Dame! I'm going by my senior citizen memories and old photos. He geared me to the St. Joseph's Lake page for my incorrectly posted Lake photos. That being said I love being out in nature and around bodies of water. When my daughter and I spent time together at the university a walk to the lake was a great escape. I'm sure during my many visits in four years I visited other lakes near the campus. If you live in South Bend, go to the university, or you are visiting like me then by all means take in the lake activities and spend time hiking or walking around St. Joseph's Lake. Highly recommended.

Or maybe I did realize it, but St. Mary's Lake just held a particular sway for me. In any case, St. Joseph's Lake is probably more beautiful than its westerly cousin--er, (unconsummated) spouse? I say "probably" because it depends on what you like. If you'd rather walk around a mostly flat path without trees obstructing your view, then St. Mary's Lake is your girl. But if you like changing elevations, paths that sometimes take strange turns, and the wonder of a mysterious island with a locked gate, then St. Joseph's Lake is your boy. Yes, I know, both lakes have islands; and technically, St. Mary's Lake has more of them, but one of St. Joseph's Lake's islands is connected to the shore by a footpath, and there's this weird gate that's usually locked, although if you don't mind getting wet, it's pretty easy to get around. (Believe me, I know.) If the weather's particularly nice, you can rent a boat and sail around the lake. I never did this, but when my brother was in town for my graduation, he really wanted to. The lake is strange during the winter because it doesn't freeze. Why not? Well, Notre Dame has its own power plant (coal-fired, unfortunately), which is cooled by St. Joseph's Lake. After the water is used, it is pumped back into the lake, which ensures that the water is always too warm to freeze. This causes quite a lot of confusion for the local waterfowl. Normally, ducks and geese fly south for the winter, and this is largely the case for Notre Dame's ducks and geese. But even in the middle of winter, you'll find some ducks swimming around St. Joseph's Lake, and I often wonder whether this ruins their natural instincts. I'm not very athletic, but if I were, I would be one of those people who run around this lake and then St. Mary's Lake in what seems like a decently challenging but also relaxing jog. If you're a woman and you choose to run around St. Joseph's Lake, you should probably bring some mace along. I've never felt unsafe walking around the lake, even in the middle of the night in really cold weather, but it is kind of spooky, and there are a lot of places to hide.

But everything else is just trash. I purchased a brand new boat last summer. I took it got to be winterized and to warranty fix my boat cover that started to tear. I picked it up and the fall afterwards and didn't look too closely. They fixed the button but not the tear. They also left greasy dirty hand prints and dirty foot prints all over my boat that were such a pain to clean up. I didn't notice the tear was till there until I pulled it out of storage. My fault for not looking at it when I picked it up in the fall. I had it brought back to fix the tear. They fixed it but they left my boat outside in the rain. To fix the cover. A bird took a crap on the back seat. They then didn't put one pole in and put another pole so tight they couldn't snap all the buttons and now another button is tearing because of it. I went to clean the bird poop off and it left behind a yellow stain that I have no idea how to get off now. Also when I picked up the bait my 7 by 5 pin adapter is no longer connected to the boat which I always leave connected. They also winterized my waverunner and when they disconnected the negative terminal from the battery they did not put the screw back in so I had to go find a new screw. They do not care about your property. I would not recommend you use them to take care of yours.

But after storing it at the marina prior to picking up for the first time, I found the trailer's guide poles missing, and while the sales team couldn't help, I replaced them myself. These guide poles are unique to MasterCraft trailers. When I tried towing, the trailer wiring was faulty. I fixed the ground wire and got it working. I launched the boat at my local dock, but on the first outing, the bilge pump started working overtime. I discovered the leak was from a wire running out of the transom. It took nearly four weeks as it was busy season starting the summer to get the boat into service for the local marina to fix it. Once back in the water, I found additional issues of two unsealed seacocks causing leaks, which I fixed with marine sealant. However, water kept accumulating in the bilge, and the battery alarm went off after an hour. The port ballast pump also didn't work. I took the boat back to the local marina, who later found an inboard shaft leak, a bad alternator, and faulty ballast wiring. By this point, I was frustrated--my family had only used the boat three times having to pull it out of water each run, and I'd missed great weather. Culver Portside Marina had assured me the boat was "water-ready," but they admitted it wasn't tested before sale when contacting them on the most current 3 issues being repaired and my experience so far. They offered no help with the repairs, despite me asking for at least 50% of the repair costs. The sale was "as is," per the owner of Culver Portside but these issues should've been addressed before posting sale or disclosed during the sale had it properly been tested Now we have a $1,300 repair estimate immediately after the purchase . I'd recommend anyone buying from Culver Portside ensure a thorough documented inspection and test everything before purchase, especially since it's mid-July, and I'm still waiting for repairs to finish. With school starting soon, it's tough explaining the situation to kids who were once excited upon hearing of the purchase. This was a boat they claimed to have been serviced by them the past few years.

The problem with the titles was 100% my problem/mistake and I felt terrible about it. It was in no way the fault of R&S and I told R&S that they should share with the customer that this was totally my mistake and that I was very sorry that it happened. Simply stated, I had misfiled the original titles for both the boat and trailer. When we were looking to trade them in, I requested duplicate/replacement titles from the BMV. Shortly after receiving the new titles, I of course located the originals (Murphy's law) and intended to shred the old and keep the new. Instead, I accidentally signed off the old titles to R&S at the time of the trade-in. R&S had no reason to question anything at all. Of course, my mistake would then be identified at the BMV during the title work. I felt terrible about my mistake, but luckily, I had not yet shredded the duplicate titles and was able to get them to R&S within a couple of days. We have been dealing with R&S Boats now for 10 years for boat and accessory purchases, as well as services, and highly recommend them! We have been treated fairly and professionally and have recommended them to others who have also had good experiences. Sandra, Randy, and the entire R&S team keep up the excellent work!!!

One other thing that we thought was strange is that when we purchased the boat it had life vests and guide rods on trailer, but when we picked up the boat, both of items were removed. Anyhow, Probably not a good time for us to buy a boat on 4th of the July weekend with everybody so busy. Howevwrwould recommend R&S Boat to others.
