Our family visited for a Friday night dinner and started out on the small front patio. Sun was shining and light breeze, but we had to retreat indoors for dining when a sudden pop up storm arrived. Extensive bar menu and I tried a peach daiquiri with no alcohol version. Other diners chose the Pina colada and also a Friday cocktail special of Holy Water, which included blue curaçao. Feedback was mixed. We started with 1/2 pound of hot and spicy peel and eat shrimp and a dozen oysters. Great preparation and taste. It was apparently all so good and we had such a great time that we forgot to take photos of the food. We shared steamer bowls and a captain's platter. This allowed for a variety of crab legs, steamed oysters, sausages, corn, red potatoes, garlic Parmesan bread, shrimp, grouper, onion rings, clam strips, along with butter, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce. We had arrived famished and we all left satiated and carrying out To Go boxes. We've been to Rumors many times over the years since we moved to Kentucky some 15 years ago but we haven't been here in probably 6 years. It's always a good choice if you want fried seafood and cheaper shell fish. It hasn't changed one iota since our first visit in 2010. My daughter and I were doing some Christmas shopping in Louisville and we'd have much rather preferred getting oysters and the seafood tower at The Capital Grille by the Oxmoor but we were kinda "steaked" out. It's always been busy and popular but when we got there it was practically empty, by the time we left it had filled to capacity. Lots of oak tables and the decor is typical seafood restaurant on the gulf shore. It's has a weathered look but I think that's the point, it doesn't distract. The staff has always been friendly and since we beat the crowd, service was quick. We started off with a dozen oysters (I'm guessing from the gulf) which is half the price of oysters at all the raw bars at premium steakhouses. Yeah they're not Chesapeakes, Kumamotos, or blue points but my palates not so refined so I can't tell the difference from the eastern gulf oysters. We also got the smoked tuna dip, which has always been popular with my kids. I secretly think it's just Krogers flavored tuna with a few dashes of liquid smoke but it's still very good. We were there mainly for the oysters and the tuna dip so we just got sandwiches, the grouper sandwich and the oyster po boy. They are fine, what you'd expect to get in Kentucky, but nothing like you could get on the coast, they are neither as big nor as fresh. If you want a bit of the gulf coast and some reasonably priced shellfish or a seafood boil Rumor's on Shelbyville is a decent choice. read more

We met some friends for dinner, one of whom was at Rumors on their opening day in 1985. He is a big fan of the restaurant and loves the beach theme. We visited here on a Sunday afternoon around 1. It was pretty crowded and had the games on. We waited a good 5-10 minutes before our waitress came around. She was nice it was not an issue. We ordered our food and drinks. I got a club sandwich and wife got chicken and rice. My daughters got chicken pasta and a kids chicken meal. It was all about 3 stars we came to the conclusion on the food. It looked better than it taasted but it was still pretty good overall. Rumors is a longstanding local restaurant in Middletown and after a hiatus I suggested a visit for dinner with my family. Be forewarned that the crowd and parking lot stay busy, but add your name to the waiting list. It moves fast and they have a lot of tables. The servers and hostess were welcoming and so nice, recommending entrees as asked. You could tell they are used to managing the crowds of locals. We got a cold beer and onion rings - yum! For my dinner I chose the fried fish platter with coleslaw. Overall I enjoyed my meal; the coleslaw is peppery so I might try another side during the next visit. We love Rumors! I am 41 years old and have been going to Rumors for 42 years. Ha! So I will admit the memories do contribute to the ambiance for me, but for those that are looking for a new spot or haven't been in a while, it is clean, festive, lively - in a good way, not an overly rowdy way - and all around good natured fun. The food is great, I usually stick with chicken - the Diablo Chicken Linguine is great as is the Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo. The Wikiwaki Teriyaki is also great. ALL of the sandwiches are great. I myself don't eat seafood but my husband has enjoyed all of the entrees he has gotten as well. And the service is wonderful. Cheri comes to meet me and she is the most genuine, polite, yet professional being. When you see an owner working as hard as his/her employees, you know you have discovered one of the good ones. Tuesday late afternoon. Not very busy. Fish sandwich and Big Catch Platter. Tuesday Drink Special was Tito's Tonic, I wouldn't be surprised if they forgot poor old Tito, it was that weak. Seafood boil - the highlight of this was the shrimp - they were just perfect - sweet, fresh, and well done. However, the crab legs (even immediately upon arrival at the table) were cold - they were fresh, and easily shucked, but cold. The corn, potato, sausage, and mussels were all yummy. I realize that a place such as this is trying to please the masses with the seasoning, but it really was just kind of seasoned water. The drawn butter brought to the table was a huge bonus. Bathrooms - there's a pretty unfortunate sewage smell on the way back to the bathrooms. The hot water in the sinks was scorching!!! I wanted the mom with small children in line to wash after me. Let me start off by saying that I like Rumors. The food is good, the atmosphere is nice, and the staff are usually friendly and prompt with their service. My major issue with this place is portion size vs price. We started out with the jalapeño poppers, for right around $12. There were 11 poppers in the basket and they were bite sized. A dollar per popper (with what tasted like very cheap cheese in it, and a few pieces of diced jalapeños, not even a slice) is absolutely insane for the price. I wish I took a picture, but I didn't want to be reminded of how bad of a rip-off they were. The wings at Rumors 10 years ago used to come in a basket because they were so huge, as they say right on their menu, "seriously huge wings". The price reflected that back then. Something like $15 for ten massive wings that have as much chicken as 15 normal ones is fair I'd say. But the wings I had last night and the time before I went were normal size if not a bit small, and the price was still $15 for ten. They tasted good and were cooked decently, if not a little longer than they should've been. Like I said, the wings have shrunk significantly. My girlfriend had the salmon dinner, and for around $30, it wasn't good value for the money. Again, food tasted great, but $30 for the portion size is just very steep. She had the new potatoes (which were very good), and the seafood pasta salad (which was also pretty good) as sides. I had two draft beers and they both tasted like the lines hadn't been cleaned in a while, quite skunky. Rumors always has pretty good seafood, bar for the crab cakes, which tasted like they had no seasoning other than some freezer burn. The prices of their seafood are on par for getting fresh stuff in a midwestern city, but I'm not sure that it's as fresh as it should be for the price. Overall, Rumors is a good local place to go to with good food, maybe once a year if you're looking to burn some money, but I could never be a regular there, I'd go broke. The quality now vs ten years ago is significantly worse and the prices haven't changed a bit to reflect that. They also close pretty early for what looks and feels like a bar. They're always busy, which is surprising given the prices. (Although with a clientele of retirees, they're probably just going there because it's where they've always gone). We paid $70 (not including a tip) for a few tiny, cheap tasting jalapeño poppers, 10 wings, a salmon dinner with two sides, two beers and a sweet tea. Absolutely insane. $55 would be on the upper end of fair for that in my opinion. I wish this place didn't break the bank, because I do like it, it's a local mom n pop place and I love that. But it's not a gourmet place, and it's priced like it is. 2.5/5 stars. read more

I went to Rumors this weekend with my family. It's one of my father in-law's favorite restaurants in Louisville because it reminds him of some of the restaurants in Florida. We were celebrating his birthday. I ordered a round of fried pickles for the table as appetizers. They were lightly breaded so the breading didn't over power the pickle. The pickles were thinly cut the long way. Everyone in joyed them. A favorite at the table were the buffalo wings. I ordered 10 with a medium heat level with blue cheese dipping sauce. They also come with a stick of celery. They were very tasty. I don't think the heat level was too much but my son thought they were very hot. I traded a few with my nephew for mild. I also liked the mild. It would be nice if they allowed you to order a combo plate so you could try some different levels of heat, but we switched them up at the able. I also ordered a side of curly fries which were good. The waitress did a good job keeping up with us as a larger group and the food came out pretty quick. read more

The space is casual (if not a little gritty?) but the prices are higher than I'd expect for such an atmosphere. Happy to update this review after a great trip to Rumor's recently. I kept hearing they have great wings, which we did not order last time, so my partner and I decided to go back to try them. I started with a key lime pietini and it truly tasted like a slice of key lime pie. I'd go back for that drink alone. Then, we split ten wings and wow, the "rumors" were true. The wings were super crispy and had the right amount of spice. I think they are some of the best in Louisville. For entrees, my partner got the Big Catch and I got a fried shrimp basket. We sampled each other's meals and both agreed the shrimp and cocktail sauce and the onion rings were delicious but thought the grouper and the tartar sauce were just okay. We also didn't get a great batch of fries last time, but this time around, they were hot and crispy. Rumor's is always loud and bustling, but we had great service on this visit as well! Downgrade a star. Food quality issues creeping in again. You should still come here to eat and enjoy. 4 stars is still "Good" Had lunch on the patio again. Always a favorite in good weather. Wings are on the small side again and was like 75% drummetes / 25% flats. many of the bones were broken. One of the diners had buffalo tenders and said they were getting quite bready. One of my all time favorite restaurants in Louisville!! I love oysters and have tried so many, and these are honestly some of the best! They're always large oysters, I've never had any shell in them, and they're always detached from the shell. These are better than most at the fancier (and much more expensive) places I've been. You can't go to Rumors and not get an oyster shooter... Vodka, hot sauce, and an oyster (I think that's it???) Anyway, they're amazing! It's also become a tradition to visit Rumors during the Christmas holiday season and get a drink off of their 12 Days of Christmas cocktail list. A little birdie told me Rumors (a seafood restaurant) has some of the best wings in town. He was right. We started our adult lunch with $4.50 Tito's (tuesdays), what a deal! Started lunch off with gumbo and hot wings. Ali loved the wings! I thought they were good as well. The secret to great wings our way? Extra crispy and wet! The gumbo was okay. Since Rumors in a seafood joint we both ordered a fish dish. I went with the Rumors fish sandwich, recommended by our bartender who has been working there for 30 years! It was a good sandwich with two huge pieces of cod. I asked for tomato slices and received them enhancing the sandwich significantly. Ali went with the fish taco roll-up ( fish burrito). We have been long time fans of rumors, but we went for lunch today and I have recently recommitted to reviewing businesses I frequent, so the time has come for this one! This long established Middletown casual restaurant does not disappoint. The price point is affordable. The ambience is definitely casual and I do not worry about my 3year old being disruptive. It is familiar and comfortable. I know there is a big "drinks" scene, but you do not feel out of place not ordering drinks- in fact, it is common, especially as I was there today at lunch (it is also not uncommon at dinner. I guess I'm saying that it is definitely part bar but equally unquestionably a restaurant!) We ALWAYS start with the hot and spicy peel and eat shrimp. I have included a picture of 1 lb, as they are sold in weighed increments. I love them and if my family didn't order them to start, I would order them for my meal. They are not spicy in the "spicy" sense, but in the crab boil "spice" way. Delicious! Then for lunch my grandma had fried fish sandwich, which she enjoyed. My mom had grilled tuna sandwich and loved it. My son had kid's Alfredo, which is always a hit with him. I had a half dozen oysters because they are a treat for me, with a salad to accompany. They were great, tasty and served with all accoutrements you expect with raw oysters - lemon, cocktail, horseradish, saltines. I would eat my lunch again tomorrow!
