I got The Rich Boy (small) to go. It came to me at reasonable time. The meat and bread were very fresh and good quality. My ONE complaint is that this sandwich is dry! It was in desperate need of an Italian vinaigrette or mayo. I didn't think about the sauce until I was back at my work with no options. I'm sure they would add some if I asked. This was my first visit to this store. I passed the entrance once, because it wasn't clear. The parking lot is a bit of a hot mess. You can't really park in front of the doors, and the lot is in desperate need of paving, as there are many potholes lurking. I entered and went right to the counter, only to be ignored, until another customers food came up. Then I was helped by a friendly young man. My order was packaged in a piece of foil, complete with cocktail toothpicks. I chose to bring my food home, as I am close, so the food was still warm. The Gerber looked good, but the overall flavor was meh. There were other customers inside the restaurant enjoying their food, so I know that it's still popular. I feel that this location is in need of a face-lift. There are many other places to go for a meal that would be better. read more

With bit of nostalgia, rolling up to this Ruma's location, I remembered going to Ruma's drive thru somewhere in St. Louis with family and getting a prosperity sandwich. Upon arrival, this location shared some of that same nostalgia, and had the atmosphere of an unassuming hole in the wall diner. Brock and his crew were very friendly and accommodating, even though the place was hopping. I ordered a Prosperity sandwich and Gerber sandwich, and grabbed a table near an arcade in the corner. Taking a bite of the prosperity sandwich, I was instantly taken back to the 90s, rich gravy soaked toasted bread and roast beef filled my mouth with rich flavor, the Gerber sandwich was super cheesy and buttery, honestly, normally I'm not a fan of ham, but the Gerber sandwich was exceptional. After eating a little of both sandwiches I decided to get a little adventurous, and mashed the two together, into a "Prosperous Gerber", which was a truly wonderful combination. After adding the plentiful pickles that were provided, to add a bit of acidity, I polished off my sandwiches and left full, happy, and satisfied. First of all, been eating Ruma's for 40 yrs. Always the Gerber and cheese garlic bread. Magnificent! My guy has gotten hooked on it now. Today we decided to change it up and get a pizza and cheese garlic bread. BIG MISTAKE! There was hardly any toppings on the pizza. Hamburger, bacon, Canadian bacon was topping choices. Cheese garlic bread had no garlic taste. We were starving so we didn't say anything to the girls that were busy on their phones in the back. This is a great place for a simple yet delicious sandwich. It's been years since I've had Ruma's and we went there today and boy it really hit the spot. We tried the Gerber Special (5 stars), Prosperity (5 stars), and BBQ Beef sandwich (3 stars). Their 2 flavors of zapp's chips were just okay. Staff was very friendly and they've got a couple old school games for a quick prize for little kids plus a claw game and Pac-Man machine. On another note: I actually passed by it the first time because it's hard to spot so I'd suggest putting it in your GPS if you're not positive about the street to turn on. read more

Pretty standard hold in the wall deli in south city that has been open since 1974. Have all different Italian classics, including pizza, pasta, toasted ravs, etc, but they are known for their signature sandwiches. I usually love this place but tonight put a different taste in my mouth. I live 30mins south from here so I called in a Togo order around 710pm gave me 50mins b4 they close, first thing when I called at 710 they put me on hold to ask if they was still taking orders after a couple mins they get on n said they would take my order I place a 45$ order n I said I should be there around 750 to get it, their response was could you get there sooner I said I would try, I got stuck at the train tracks by a train n by the time I got there is was 3mins after they close. I see 3 young teenage boys n a girl in the kitchen with my food. So I rang the bell at the drive thru and they all just stared at me n did nothing so I rang again n nothing so I back up a bit to see what they was doing in the kitchen n they all were dancing pointing to their wrist like your too late as they was eating my food i order. I tried calling, ringing the bell n still they just kept dancing n eating my food n pointing to there wrist. So I left without nothing. So not only did they lose out on 50+ dollars n food plus the tip i was gonna give gor being late. They lose my business for good. Do not eat here if you have any kind of pride in how a restaurant should operate, they are totally rude, disrespectful, and just plan ignorant to the costumer. This place is definitely not up to par anymore. After we ordered we found a seat and waited for our meal. Right after our order, I started to hearing beeping sounds, well turns out that was the sound of a microwave. So, if you like your food microwaved this is the place to go. I just sat there thinking to myself there is no way that's what I am hearing. Well sure enough, I went up to the counter to get a to-go box. The worst customer service anywhere. The owner, Brock Ruma and his wife Laura don't give a damn about the customer! My last 5 orders were wrong and on the 6th one I had had enough. After driving 60 miles round trip to get their food, and only because I wanted to support their business, my order came back WRONG AGAIN. No surprise as their staff can't seem to get an order right and when you try to deal with it Brock and Laura Ruma tell you you are wrong and too bad. Then Brock blocks you on Facebook Messenger just like the child he is! Don't go there and waste your money. If the order is wrong it's YOUR FAULT... never theirs! read more

Very few restaurants in St Louis have withstood the test of time like Ruma's Deli. located in the Covington Place shopping plaza on Lemay Ferry Road, I have been coming to this location for over 30 years. The place isn't anything spectacular but the food has been decidedly delicious and consistently satisfying for all these years so that must say something. I ordered my favorite sandwich on the menu, called the Gerber special, order it burnt for a better and crispier sandwich, you will be so glad you did. We had the Prosperity, Gerber, Dee's Special sandwiches with a cup of Minestrone soup and Toasted Ravioli. The sandwiches were certainly nothing special. The soup was was almost completely broth, with almost no vegetables. The Toasted Ravioli was actually the worst we have ever had. The Diet Dr Pepper was too watery but the Diet Pepsi was good. I wish I could attest it to improper training but I stayed and waited for my food just to sit in awe as I watched the pristine service my white counterparts received. My Grandma used to love this place. I could never understand it, but during my childhood I choked down more of their roast beef sandwiches than I care to remember...this may be a strong explanation for my meatless adult life style. I have gone back to Ruma's since my younger days, and it's still, well, it's alright. It's a sandwich joint, so it's kind of hard to mess that up, you know? The bread is, decent, the meat is fresh, the veggies are....sort of fresh most of the time, and the staff is...acceptable...nothing great. A veggie sub is fairly standard no matter where you go, so in the long run, this place is fine for a quick lunch time stop. Good points: it's never packed so you'll get in and out pretty quick. They have some other options from sandwiches like pastas, but not a huge array, and the sandwiches do come both hot and cold. Also close proximity to QT so you don't have to spend money on a pricey fountain beverage. Negatives: mediocre sandwiches, bizarre Ruma's smell that will linger on your clothes after you leave, and having to make a left out of the parking lot...YIKES. read more

Ahh, Ruma's. One of the last bastions of "old" St. Louis delis. And by "old" I mean big thick pieces of french bread, mostaccholi by the bucketload, and more provel cheese than you can choke down. So why are their sandwiches so addictive? I have no idea, but when the phrase "Gerber Sandwich" enters my brain (a hot ham and cheese open faced sandwich on french bread), I start drooling like Pavlov's dog. Their cheese will stick to the roof of your mouth, the place is perpetually dark and the atmosphere is dungeon-esque, but I'll be damned if this isn't one of the best places to get hot sandwiches in St. Louis. It's understandable if you don't feel the same, it's the type of place only a native St. Louisan would appreciate. But when you order, get carry-out. The interior can be a tad depressing. read more

We had done all this research on this sandwich, and with the help of some local Yelpers, we were turned on to Ruma's, which was at one time in a lot of the St. Louis malls. Now reduced to having only two locations, I guess their stock has gone down, but they're one of the few places still serving this regional sandwich. So we drive all the way from Maryland Heights to this Ruma's and order a Gerber. Imagine how frustrating it was to watch 3 people get their Gerber sandwich ahead of us, especially knowing they arrived AFTER we did. 31 minutes go by and FINALLY, we got our sandwich. It was good, but nothing spectacular. Not worth the wait in any way, shape or fashion. I think the most frustrating part was that they told us they simply "lost" our order and made no effort to credit or compensate us. They just didn't seem to care. So my advice to anyone wanting a Gerber, call Imo's and ask them to slap some ham on their cheesy garlic bread. Hassle-free, and better tasting! I stopped in after a friend said they had some kind of open face sandwich that he had fond memories of. The kid behind the counter pointed out the three most popular sandwiches. The pizza bread sandwich, the prosparity, and the gerber. I chose the later....an open face ham and priceless, on garlic buttered French bread. I am currently trying to get the goey cheese off the roof of my mouth, and between my teeth. I thought the sandwich was good, but a little skimpy on the ham. Most 6" sandwiches run in the six dollar range. One other thing, when asked for a cup for water, he explained the soda.dispenser didn't have a water button, they had bottled water. Ruma's Deil is the original sandwich place in St. Louis. They've been around since I was a kid, I'd say more than 40 years. They are the home of the Gerber and I believe it originated there. The sandwiches have your basics; meat, cheese, bread. Nothing fancy but just family recipes. I particularly love the Gerber- open faced ham on garlic buttered bread topped with provel cheese and a sprinkle of paprika. The whole thing is put under the broiler so the cheese gets melty with crusty brown edges. Yum, so good! They also have a version with roast beef and gravy called the Prosperity. There are lots of other sandwich, salad and pasta choices. The baked mostacioli, a St. Louis staple, is also delicious. This location, I believe is the last one. It's very time worn, needs a facelift but it is clean, organized and has good parking. Ruma's offers great Groupons from time to time! The employees are friendly and I really just recommend getting take out as the restaurant has very little seating. Plus leftovers are great eaten cold in the middle of the night. This place just isn't what it used to be. The first time I went to this location was in 1991. We were there about a year ago and I remember it being so so. My wife loves Gerbers and I love Mostaccioli . They were both half off today so I figured why not. The Gerber was okay, I thought the gravy on the Prosperity was gelatinous but my kid liked it. Unfortunately, the Mostaccioli was missing the Meatballs I heard my wife mention twice when ordering and the sauce were very thin. The location that used to be in the city was awesome and I have never tried the Kimmswick location. By the price it definitely appeared that I paid for meatballs. This is a no nonsense review for a no nonsense restaurant. Without a doubt, Ruma's Deli has sen better days. This is the only functioning business in a long dead shopping plaza. The interior of the place is dismal. The exterior of the restaurant is frightening. The telephone etiquette of the staff is sketchy at best. The demeanor of the staff inside is efficient on courtesy. But the food... The food is always good. This location consistently turns out great St. Louis style pizzas, strong cold sandwiches, reasonable pasta selections, and the best Gerber/Prosperity sandwiches in St. Louis. Understand, there is little to no flash at the shop, but they succeed where it counts. My family were loyal customers as I grew up. Last night, I returned for a Gerber sandwich and found the restaurant has managed to keep their reputation as a serious lunch choice intact.
