I've worked with Juniper for about three years to support my dog with generalized anxiety disorder. Her training sessions have been invaluable in helping my dog and I learn to navigate the world together. She is very good at listening and customizing training to fit the dog and owner. I don't know what we would have done without her support! read more

I'm checking in several years after using Ruff Translation Dog Training for help with my reactive German Shepherd, Garnet. I've continued to work with him using tips I learned from Juniper. After working together for so long, Garnet's trust in me has developed to the point where we frequently get compliments from strangers on his focus and behavior. I can even walk closely next to well behaved dogs now without worry. So many of Juniper's recommendations have been woven into my life with Garnet and changed how I work with him and handle him in many ways. There are some things we still won't do (dog parks, off leash crowded hikes) but Garnet's life is so much richer than I would have envisioned it when we first started training sessions when he was 1.5 years old. read more

I recently had several sessions with Juniper to address some issues with my 4-year-old yellow lab, mainly reactivity towards other dogs while on leash. We had a great experience. I went into it feeling self-conscious about my lack of knowledge, ashamed at the behaviors that my dog had developed, and not sure that consulting a trainer would make a difference for us. As it turns out, I didn't need to worry about any of that. In addition to being very knowledgeable, Juniper is kind, understanding, patient, encouraging, and always positive. She has given us tons of new resources and is always willing to answer questions. More than anything, our sessions were about training me to be able to read my dog's behavior, and being able to react appropriately and employ the right techniques. Juniper set realistic expectations for our sessions, and I came away from the experience with a whole new set of tools and the ability and confidence to continue working with my dog on my own. We are finally making real progress, and my bond with my dog has greatly improved. I highly recommend Juniper, especially if you are feeling lost and unsure about working with a trainer. She will get you going in the right direction. read more

This is our second time working with Juniper, the last time being about five years ago with our previous dog. Juniper is patient, knowledgeable, and really tailored each training session to our family's needs. I love the emails she sends out with homework after every session so we don't forget anything, and she's very responsive via email if you have questions in between sessions. We have seen great improvement in our puppy and we have the confidence and skills needed to help train her to her best ability. Although Juniper was very booked out, the training sessions were very much worth the wait and we will definitely use her again if needed. Her prices were very competitive and the training we received was worth every penny. We cannot recommend Junpier enough! read more

Juniper has an amazing amount of care and knowledge. We had a very anxious 2 year old Boxer. We were taught skills to help alleviate our pups fear of people and new places with lots of patience and practice. We would defiantly recommend Juniper for any dog training needs. read more

Juniper is an incredible trainer with a rare combination of expertise and communications skills. We can't recommend her more highly. We've worked with several trainers, all of whom were good, but Juniper is the best because her analysis and feedback are so thorough, she's a really good listener, and she has a great balance between advocating for your pet's needs while also recognizing, factoring in and having empathy and encouragement for pet owners. Juniper is a realist and has a good balance between advising and advocating for your dog but recognizing your real-world limitations and giving advice that is feasible given your situation. Her advice was spot on, thoughtful, actionable and very thorough. She also set up good mock situations to evaluate our newly adopted dogs behaviors in various scenarios to determine areas of focus and how to tackle them. We will surely use her again going forward and with other dogs we adopt in the future. A well-behaved, happy dog makes for a happy life for everyone. Thank you. We reached out to Juniper to help us train our new pup and decided to go with her Puppy Foundation Package. Juniper was very responsive and her website was easy to use to pay for lessons and to also schedule times to meet. The trainings were weekly and our dog, Monty, loved seeing Juniper whenever it was time for a lesson. Luckily Monty is very food motivated and learned a lot of great foundational basics. Juniper was also very informative during the lessons by giving us an idea of why our pup is doing certain things and different techniques to get him to make better decisions. One thing I also liked was that the lessons would also be adapted for the needs of the dog. Since our dog is a doodle, his hair would need to be trimmed every month or so as it gets long and Juniper dedicated one of the lessons to teach us how to do this ourselves to help us save money in the long run. After each lesson, Juniper would also send us email recaps of the different things we talked about during the lesson and also training homework for us to practice until the next lesson. I would highly recommend Juniper if you're looking to get your pup started on the right track! read more

When I reached out to Juniper, I was at my wits end with Maxx. Our walks were no fun. Not for him, and not for me. It really felt like we were just not communicating. I was frustrated, and I didn't know what to do. Juniper gave me the tools I needed to relate to Maxx in a way he can understand. We are great friends now. It's amazing how much he trusts me now when we go outside into the unknown around people and other dogs! Thanks Juniper for your quiet peaceful presence, your non-judgmental actitude, and your never ending patience! Maxx and I cannot recommend you enough! Juniper is absolutely amazing! I have 2 senior dogs (8&9 yrs old) that are extremely reactive on the leash. I wanted to focus primarily on one of them since she has high anxiety and demonstrates "aggression" towards other dogs, or really anything she perceived as a threat. Each session we were able to see tremendous progress despite my pups being on the older side with "die hard" habits. Other neighbors and friends have noticed their improvement too! What I loved the most about Juniper is that she doesn't judge you. The environment is always welcoming and she's ready to answer any questions you might have. Also, she gradually hands you the torch by having you get more involved yourself. By gradually getting more input from yourself, you're able to practice what you've learn from her sessions which helps you in the long run with your pups. Juniper was not only knowledgeable but also genuinely passionate about her work. She is always very patient and calm. Throughout the sessions, my dog, Tudor, made remarkable progress. When you work with Juniper, expect a training plan completely tailored to your dog and unique situation. She uses positive reinforcement methods only and is always considerate of your dog's stress level because you can tell she really cares about them. She also provides resources (via email) to give you a good foundation and understanding into your dog's behavior. I hired Juniper after me and my 6 year old cattle dog mix Aurora moved from a house to an apartment. Before we began our training, Aurora would bark and lunge at most people and dogs while we were on our walks and would continuously bark at anyone who entered the apartment. After working with Juniper and using the positive reinforcement methods she taught me, multiple friends and family members have told me I have a completely different dog. Aurora now can walk past most people with only a quick glance at them and she only stares at other dogs, rarely does she have the opportunity to work up to a full barking fit before I can use the tools Juniper taught me to de-escalate the situation and distract her. I have been able to have people over to my apartment again and I have been able to take Aurora to friends and family without dogs. Overall, both Aurora's and my own quality of life have improved after working with Juniper. read more

Juniper is calm and thoughtful. She gave suggestions for different approaches to target my dog's problem behaviors (reactivity to other dogs while walking on leash, jumping up on me when I get home, barking at the doorbell) and met us on "home ground" to work on these problems in real-world situations. My dog responded so much better to this approach than to going to weekly off-site lessons. We had 4 sessions together and I can't believe the positive difference it's made. My dog and I are both big fans of Juniper! read more

Juniper is wonderful! After adopting Bodhi from the pound during the pandemic, I realized that he understood some basic commands, but that he didn't always 'listen.' Of course, it was me who needed training. Over the course of 5 times working with her award-based approach (intro + 4 training sessions), it's amazing how much better Bodhi and I communicate. We did our homework between sessions, but sometimes that was tough and we'd miss days in between. I'd say we averaged about 5-10 mins a day and except when we were moving or over the holidays, I scheduled 3 weeks between sessions, so that we were able to get practice time in. I also want to share that Juniper was able to help me navigate issues that came up away from training, such as his reactions to fireworks and sudden loud noises, and how to help him get through obvious fears around our move, during packing, and with movers. As a first-time dog parent, there were many instances where my instincts were cat-centric and Bodhi liked her approach SO much better :p Thanks for help me understand the world of dogs and care for Bodhi, Juniper! read more

I spent a long time looking for a professional dog trainer before I found Juniper @ Ruff Translation. Juniper is very good at identifying behavior and using compassionate methods to modify the unwanted ones and reinforce the desired ones. My two year old collie mix was fear- aggressive after being attacked by a pair of loose dogs. Walking her was really unpleasant. Juniper changed that. It was an amazing experience and I learned a lot. Fast-forward seven years and I find a puppy on the street. When no one came to claim her at the shelter I adopted her. Yay a puppy! Juniper told me this particular breed of dog was a lot to handle but I wasn't worried because I knew with her help we would be just fine! After spending A LOT of time with Juniper in Winters, the puppy has grown into an amazing dog. Thank you Juniper! xoxo suzy q and zara-be read more

We were very satisfied with Juniper Zen's professionalism and her way with dogs! I was looking for a trainer that trains with a positive calm attitude. Juniper is positive, consistent, kind, gentle yet firm in her training. She works very well with the dogs she trains as well as their handlers. She does a great job keeping EVERYONE on the SAME page. Our initial meeting with Juniper was thorough and she immediately bonded with our labradoodle. Juniper is knowledgeable about why dogs may behave in a particular way, which is so helpful in training. She returns my calls and/or texts in a timely manner, which I really appreciate. (I must have left vm to 4 different trainers that either didn't bother calling me back or called a week or two weeks later) She has a wealth of information and what I really appreciated was after our private training sessions, she would send a summary. I still refer to those summaries. Juniper has a wonderful board and training facility. (I believe she first needs to know your dog). We have taken our dog there on two separate occasions and it has been a very possible experience (Our pup didn't want to leave) I could go on and on. Juniper definitely stands out above the rest. We have had 10 private sessions and are continuing training. She is helping your puppy to tolerate bathing and grooming. read more

Juniper is a kind, knowledgeable, and excellent dog trainer. My partner and I adopted a 5-year-old American pitbull terrier from the shelter and after a few days of warming up to her new surroundings, she began exhibiting serious dog reactivity on leash. Barking, pulling, lunging, running in circles, the whole bit. I knew I needed professional help, and Juniper was the perfect fit. She provided us with tips on how to distract our dog and avoid reactive outbursts, while also starting to train her around other dogs. Our dog is still a work in progress after our five leash reactivity training sessions with Juniper, but we now have the tools to keep working with our pooch and eventually get her to respond politely to other dogs. Juniper is based out of Winters and she came to us in Davis. We always wore masks and kept our distance as much as possible. Plus all our sessions were outside. Juniper was a handful of minutes late for about half of our lessons, but she usually gave us a heads up when that was the case. read more

I contacted Juniper at Ruff Translations earlier this year to inquire about private dog training for our 5 month old Great Pyrenees puppy. After completing a basic dog obedience class at one of our local pet stores in Vacaville, it was clear that we needed some additional help training and communicating with our extra-large breed pup, Bo, who was growing in size/strength rapidly and becoming harder to manage on walks as he would pull and react to just about every stimuli in our neighborhood. Plus we have a rambunctious three year old, and of course were concerned about their ability to coexist happily and safely together. We met with Juniper for an in-home consultation initially to discuss a training plan, and we found her to be knowledgeable, friendly and extremely intuitive with our unique dog/family dynamic and was able to customize a series of lessons to fit our needs. In discussing our goals, we identified several majors areas in which we could use her help: notably socialization with new people and other dogs, leash walking, leash reactivity and recall. During our 4 weekly sessions, we tackled each of these areas thoroughly by practicing out in public, in our home, and even with a well-trained decoy dog! After spending several weeks working with Juniper, we've noticed huge improvements in Bo, and feel much more confidently in caring for such a large dog. Most importantly my husband and I learned how to recognize stress signals that Bo was exhibiting and take him out of uncomfortable situations early and introduce positive associations (through treats, affirmations, physical touch, etc) in scenarios where he may have exhibited negative reactivity in the past. Through the sessions we also learned a great deal about the physical and cognitive development of dogs - Juniper provided great reading materials and recommended several books to us to help continue our education, and still checks in on us every couple weeks to make sure Bo is progressing. All around a great experience, and would recommend Juniper's expertise to any dog owner working to understand and communicate better with their furry family member. THANK YOU JUNIPER! read more

Juniper was amazing! We learned so much from her in just our 1st session. We have a rescue pup that is very sweet, but also very fearful. My two golden retrievers and I have just finished Juniper Zen's Nose training classes. It is clear to me that both of them enjoyed the challenge that the class provides. I could never say enough good things about Juniper! I'm extremely picky with my dog and I am so happy I chose to train her here. She's so knowledgeable about dog body language and force free training techniques. It only took four lessons to turn my dog from a jumping, crying, whining mess on leash to a (semi) normal chill dog. I've already referred her to anyone who will listen in my personal life and I had to do the same here. She is so in depth and really cares about your dog and you. Freya (my dog) is picky with strangers and absolutely loved her (as much as she is able LOL). I can't imagine trusting anyone else with Freya again. read more

We signed up for Juniper's training to help train our new 4 month pup, Kuma. She was fantastic! We loved her approach to training and we've found the training has stuck. Kuma was a lot calmer and listened well after training and is such a great walker now! No pulling and knows to stay close while walking. Also help with grooming so we can easily clip nails ourselves. Kuma was so excited to see Juniper when we dropped him off. You can tell Juniper cares a ton for the pups and offers a comfortable environment during training. She also offers detailed daily summaries of your dog's progression which I looked forward to every day! Could not recommend Juniper's services more. Would give it a 10/10! read more

We adopted our dog from the shelter when she was about a year old and after a short time she started showing more and more reactive tendencies. While on walks she would bark, growl, and jump at the end of her leash toward anyone who talked to us, certain people when they were walking directly toward us, and every dog. After reaching out to Juniper we quickly scheduled an assessment and signed up for her leash reactivity package. My favorite things about Juniper: 1. Her communication!! Juniper sent several extremely detailed and informative follow-up emails for our sessions and encouraged me to email her with any questions that popped up (including things not necessarily reactivity related), during and after our training package ended. 2. During our sessions she was very thorough in explaining how to read my dog's body language, why my dog might be feeling the way she is, and if/how/why I should respond. 3. She was very patient and kind with both me and my dog. 4. Although we signed up for one of her training packages, Juniper was constantly updating the sessions and her guidance depending on new things she learned about my dog and whether or not our initial attempts were working. It took my dog and I a little bit of time and trial and error to find rewards that were motivating enough for her to listen to me when other dogs were within range. I used training bits for several months because she has an extremely sensitive stomach and Juniper and I experimented with some other things but my dog was most interested in the training bits. Over several months I saw clear improvements in my dog but we still had fairly frequent reactive episodes. Eventually I decided to try using chicken, which she had eaten before but only in small quantities. Juniper's techniques combined with chicken as a reward were like a magic solution. We are still at a stage that I have to have chicken on-hand whenever we take her anywhere but I am so grateful and relieved that it makes my dog virtually non-reactive! read more

Juniper was very helpful in curbing some behaviors for our dogs and assisting with troubleshooting our concerns in a way that quickly integrated into our daily lives. This was huge for us as i have worked with many dog trainers over the life of my older dog now nearly 13yrs and younger dog now 5 yrs. the problem was they would give us tools to help but it would never transition into real life... ie it worked great in a controlled environment but the minute it was put into play (company over or out on a walk) any of that would go out the window and the behavior was right back to "dealing with it." Juniper showed us how to integrate the training with our life, our one yr old child running around screaming and still getting a response from the dogs while this is happening. Out walking on leash and getting to the point of comfortably walking off leash. Can't thank her enough read more

I am late with this review, but I want Juniper to know we have not forgotten about you. It's been a month or so since the end of our training. Juniper is kind, gentle, and soft spoken. She worked with us and our little Maltese/Yorkie. She evaluated our pooch and spent a 4-week training working on his barking and fears of anyone but us. It is amazing what Juniper accomplished in such a short time. If you need any assistance with your pet do not hesitate to contact Juniper! You will be happier, your pet will be happier and your frustrations will go away! THANKS JUNIPER read more

Juniper is wonderful. Our "Deke" had resource guarding issues, and we thought we weren't going to be able to keep him. The GSP Rescue sent us to Juniper for some training. Juniper was very patient and gentle with us and Deke. She did a wonderful job training "us" how to read our dog and work with his resource guarding. We are no longer afraid of our own dog. We have a stronger bond with Deke now that we can tell what he is feeling and how to approach him. He has come a long way in a short time thanks to many people advising us and Juniper's training. Juniper is quite simply, the best. Having brought home an aussie puppy I knew I had my work cut out for me. I wanted to make sure that my pup learned good habits and would have the foundation to grow up to be the amazing dog I know he can be. Though it may be a bit cliché to say, Juniper made the world of difference from the very first session we had together. She improved my communication between my pup and I exponentially. She uses nothing but positive reinforcement during training sessions and teaches effective ways to prevent and put an end to unwanted behaviors. I have no doubt that she will make your puppy the greatest little fur ball in the world if you give her a chance. I'll leave you all with this. Call Juniper now, I mean it, TODAY!! I fell in love with a rescue dog online and the breed is not only one I am not allergic to, but the most challenging of all breeds to train, and for a first time dog owner, I was in BIG trouble until Juniper came to the rescue!! Before Juniper, my Baby, Kai, would not walk on a leash, go out in public without being a mental wreck, or warm up to anyone other than me!! After Juniper, Kai will go for walks on his leash, approach strangers and other dogs, and responds to simple commands, sit, stay, here, etc. Juniper's attention to detail and overall knowledge of training dogs never ceased to amaze me every time she came to our home for our sessions. Juniper is incredible. She is so passionate about her work and this truly shows by the amount of time she put into training our pup, teaching us how to practice these behaviors to maintain them, and sending daily emails with updates. We sent our new pup to Juniper for her Puppy Camp for 4 weeks. We live in SF and decided after chatting with a friend who also set their pup to Juniper, that it was worth the 4-6 hour driving commitment 2x a week. I was nervous at first sending our pup away 5 nights a week after just getting him, but she made it SO easy on us. She did a thorough intro session with us prior to us sending our pup there which really showed her knowledge in the space and passion for each pup and their needs. During puppy camp, she sent daily emails and handful of pics which made me feel like he was in SUCH good hands. Ralph didn't even want to come home with us when we picked him up on the weekends! She even noticed our pup had some anxiety so gave us some tools to practice separation anxiety training with him which eventually enabled him to grow out if it (originally we thought we might need to get him an anxiety behavioral therapist). After his 4-week camp, she checked in with us to see how things were going and provided further guidance as we are still new pup parents and could use her expert advice! I would highly recommend Juniper to anyone looking for a dog trainer, either a pup or an older dog, and even if you live a 2 hour drive from her. read more

Juniper has been incredibly helpful training our puppy and more importantly me. Many many years ago we had a dog in our family that was highly aggressive. I carry that worry about aggressive dogs into fear around other dogs being that way with my puppy. Even though my puppy has no aggressive behavior, she absolutely loves other dogs, I've been on the other side and am fearful of the potential. Juniper creates an environment that is safe and gives my puppy an opportunity to play with other dogs in a controlled environment. That normal play has helped both her and my confidence. Ruff Translation Dog Training - The two (better trained) dogs, but they still find ways to be bad - Pet Training Near Me

Dog trainer turned family is the best way to describe Aunty Juniper. My boyfriend Michael, myself and our 7 month old Dalmatian Beedo are truly lucky to have her in our lives. Micheal and I placed our deposit on Beedo back in May 2017, and set out to find a dog trainer based solely on positive techniques, rather than negative reinforcements. I don't think I could ever harm a dog, and it was important to find someone whose values aligned with ours. We chose Juniper because of the time she spent with us "puppy proofing" our home, and setting us up for success WEEKS BEFORE Beedo arrived. As first time dog owners, we appreciated her providing a list of items to always have on hand, and WHY. What's really awesome about Juniper is that she travels to you! Bonus points. Our first session was at 9 weeks old, so we only had him for a week. I thought surely he was going to be her worst client because he is so energetic, mischievous, and stubborn. He'd been playing all day, and to my embarrassment, Beedo actually fell asleep when she arrived. That's okay because her 1.5 hour in home sessions usually begin with a 30 minute conversation about new experiences Beedo has had and how to introduce him to other new situations/things in a positive/fun way. He woke up shortly after and miraculously learned how to sit in seconds flat! My playful puppy turned into the most obedient version of himself that I've seen, and me... well a liar haha! If you're like me, and think, "How am I suppose to duplicate this behavior exactly like Juniper when she's not here?" Well, Juniper writes up a transcript of commands learned and how to execute them based upon the session at hand and all the takeaways from it. While I always feel I can email Juniper about a question (at the end of our session package or not), we have the write ups for referencing. THESE ARE GOLD. At the end of our first 6 week package, Beedo had successfully learned many commands like a 15 second sit/stay, down, polite leash walking, some self control exercises regarding being around human food, etc. While Beedo had learned a ton, as parents/owners Juniper is equally as strict. There's a lot of role playing, where Michael and I would observe her training Beedo, then it was our turn. She's great at giving feedback on our execution of it and why it's better to do one thing before another. THAT'S PRICELESS. Each time, I've been totally amazed at the magic that is Juniper. Needless to say, we've stayed with Juniper into month 7 of Beedo's life. Our training has transitioned into preventing behavior issues from occurring like getting too excited when a dog walks by at the park, or barking at the doorbell ringing because he's anxious. If you're still reading this review and you find that your dog is displaying some anxiety issues, IT'S NOT TOO LATE. CALL JUNIPER NOW! The confidence in Beedo is priceless... I'd pay millions to see that he's a well rounded dog living in a human ran world. Thank you Juniper for all you've done and will continue to do for us. You are always my highest recommendation to anyone thinking of adding a member to their family. BEEDO LOVES YOU! read more

I cannot say enough good things about Juniper and her professionalism and the improvement we have seen in Ollie our Border Collie. Here is what you can expect from the business end: 1) A highly evolved interface for scheduling lessons, making payments and contacting Juniper EASY. I work in IT and interface with a lot of these systems and Juniper has taken advantage of some of the latest technology to make it all really easy to schedule, reschedule, cancel, and pay of your lessons. 2) Competitive pricing and a business owner who works with you and is not out to gouge you. On the training side: 1) A thorough evaluation of your doggo in person and then expect a detailed write-up emailed to you that night or the next day. We are a distance from Ruff Translation so we went to her training site and had a write-up in our email almost before we got home. 2) She has a clean open and well thought out training yard if you have to go to her place. 3) Well planned and incremental behavioral steps to get your dog to adopt a behavior. 4) A calm and gentle training mentality and demeanor. 5) An excellent understanding of canine behavior and modern training techniques. We did our research and picked Ruff Translation because they looked to be the best in our area and we were right!. read more
