Brought my 2004 Jeep in because I could not engage the 4WD lever. Also, my readout indicated I was in part time 4WD while I was in 2WD. They told me that I needed a new transfer case, (cost: nearly $2000 plus labor). I asked about a rebuild. Nope, it was too far gone, they told me. I asked about a used case. Nothing doing. When I asked them about the readout, I was told, "That's what happens when your transfer case starts to go out". I thought that answer sounded fishy, so I brought it to another mechanic for a 2nd opinion. I did not need a new transfer case- or even a rebuild. All I needed was a new detent pin. Cost: $72.00. The readout? A $26.00 sensor took care of that. Total cost? Just south of three hundred bucks. Perhaps factory shops cannot use aftermarket rebuild kits, I dunno. But these folks were either incompetent, or just flat-out lied to me. If you are a woman, or a guy who is not mechanically inclined? BEWARE!
