Ryan & Sidney have a commitment to the art, and it benefits everyone who comes to learn through them. Rueda con ritmo is excellent. And fun.

If you are a total beginner, seasoned pro or anything in between, I highly recommend checking out…read moreDance/10. I've been searching for the right studio in the Bay Area for years. In another lifetime I was a professional ballet dancer. I am not in great shape now, but I am still serious about learning. I thought my days of regularly taking class were over until I found Dance/10. I had stopped taking class because I grew tired of these scenarios at other places: A. Super competitive classes where people have a fit and elbow you if you stand in "their spot", etc. B. "Adult" classes made up of 13 year olds wondering what you are doing there. C. Classes meant more for socializing rather than dancing. D. Classes that were strictly limited to modern or ballet. I've found the adult classes at Dance/10 to be welcoming, diverse and focused on helping each student become a better dancer and performer -wherever they may be in their process. There is a perfect balance between serious work and levity. Pamm Drake (owner and instructor) is the triple threat of dance educators: professional career on Broadway, an excellent teacher who takes pedagogy seriously, and a genuinely nice person who clearly delights in her students' progress. Her tap classes are fun and progressive - she is great at reading the room and helping individuals without breaking the flow of class. The other instructors are similarly energetic and encouraging in class. At Dance/10 I witness each adult student being challenged, respected and seen.

Being that I only was able to attend one class, I asked for a refund. I tried to explain, but they were extremely unaccommodating. They said that I should have filled out a form. How the heck was I supposed to fill out a form while in the hospital? I had other issues to worry about. If this was not bad enough, this program was not even as described and mainly consisted of little children and not teens. They started ignoring my emails after I tried to explain my situation. Dance 10 was a lot nicer. These people are extremely greedy and do not care about their students. They just want money. Avoid this studio at all costs.

The classes did not appear to have been thoughtfully planned out before each class and the parent visit day felt haphazardly done. The children did not seem to learn much in the months they were there. There also turned out to be many hidden costs aside from the outfits, bags and shoes, such as a spring recital (not in Alameda) which you learn about later (with additional costs for participation, costume, photography, recital tickets, flower bouquets etc which they pressure you into purchasing e.g. by parading the children during class to show them what costumes they would be wearing if they participated, and measuring everyone regardless of whether or not you are participating thus making it more difficult for parents to explain if you can't do the recital). Overall I really wanted to like ABA, however selling was prioritized above the children's long term love of dance. I appreciate the school needs to make a profit as a business, however I would have been more persuaded if costs were transparent and if they did not reduce themselves to using unkind hard sell techniques especially with young learners. Thank you.

Makana is so incredibly kind and supportive, and she's a beautiful dancer and a great teacher. The other students are also lovely. There is a wide variety of skill levels, ages, and bodies, and no judgement. Students can participate in performances if desired, but if you don't want to that's also fine. I would encourage anyone to try out classes here.

After reading a YELP review and contacting Kumu Lani via email, I decided to give it a one-month try. Upon entering the studio, I realized I came to the right place. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Kumu Lani is a very talented hula dancer and teacher. I enjoy learning from her and taking in all the mana'o she shares with the class. I prefer to dance hula, but she offers all types of classes at her studio--from children and adult hula and Tahitian, to ukulele classes, sewing classes, and much more. A list of all updated classes are available online at www.halaumakana.com. If you want to try something new, or get back into hula or Tahitian again (like I did), or just want to learn more about the Pacific Island cultures, you should check it out. She's really a no pressure kinda teacher, but if you put in the time and work, you'll learn a lot. I've been dancing with Halau Makana for 7 months now. Every week I look forward to my Tuesday night class with Kumu Lani and all my hula sisters. They are 'ohana to me.
