In another lifetime I was a professional ballet dancer. I am not in great shape now, but I am still serious about learning. I thought my days of regularly taking class were over until I found Dance/10. I had stopped taking class because I grew tired of these scenarios at other places: A. Super competitive classes where people have a fit and elbow you if you stand in "their spot", etc. B. "Adult" classes made up of 13 year olds wondering what you are doing there. C. Classes meant more for socializing rather than dancing. D. Classes that were strictly limited to modern or ballet. I've found the adult classes at Dance/10 to be welcoming, diverse and focused on helping each student become a better dancer and performer -wherever they may be in their process. There is a perfect balance between serious work and levity. Pamm Drake (owner and instructor) is the triple threat of dance educators: professional career on Broadway, an excellent teacher who takes pedagogy seriously, and a genuinely nice person who clearly delights in her students' progress. Her tap classes are fun and progressive - she is great at reading the room and helping individuals without breaking the flow of class. The other instructors are similarly energetic and encouraging in class. At Dance/10 I witness each adult student being challenged, respected and seen.

Growing up in the Central Valley, I took ballet regularly, but being nearly in the middle of nowhere, the instructors weren't really ballet dancers and were more competitive types who focused on jazz and contemporary. Julie is a true professional and ballerina who knows what she's doing and is so fun to be around and watch. Her dedication to the art and her classes is unmatched. The class environment (of Intro 1 & 2) is super welcoming and friendly and the corrections are always done in a way to help, rather than insult. I used to dread and fear corrections, but since coming to ABA that fear has long disappeared. So far, I've tried all the adult evening classes. The Beginning/intermediate feels more like an intermediate/advance class, and unfortunately, the few times I've gone it's been cliquey and some people aren't too friendly. However, attitudes and egos aside, I really hope to be at that level one day so I can do the more complex floor and barre work. It's been a year of correcting bad habits and basically learning again from scratch, but there's nowhere else I'd rather be. Seriously! Coming to class twice a week is the best way to decompress after a stressful day at work, and I wish there were additional classes on weekends (I would stay all day to dance if I could!).

Teacher Nora keeps the little ones engaged at all times and has a great ability to make her class fun while at the same time stays in control of her class - she also has a natural confidence with kids, and carries herself like the trained dancer she is. This is a perfect dance class from which we plan to move her on to pre-ballet then (formal) ballet (with my daughter's approval) in the future. We feel lucky to have her as my daughter's first dance teacher! Good to know: Her classes are held at the wonderful Ruby's Tumbling.
