"Holy donuts, Batman! This place is incredible!" Ricky's Donuts specializes in homemade ring -shaped donuts. For those with fillings, they fill in the center hole. Fresh and delicious! My Maple Glaze donut was made from organic, locally sourced maple syrup. The donut was light, airy and possibly the best tasting donut I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Great coffee too! The folks behind the counter were working on donut orders, but were nice enough to pause for some quick conversation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Stopped here for a donut on our way from Camden to Portland and boy do we recommend making a special stop here. When we got here around 10 AM most of the donuts had sold out and we understand why. It was so delicious! The donut has a light fluffy texture and is HUGE! We got the Caramel crunch and the Caramel had a great flavor to it. Highly recommend!

These donuts are delicious! The brioche style donuts have such a fluffy texture. They're decadent but light; such a treat! All the flavors I've tried have been delicious, most especially the Boston Creme. The chocolate topping has great chocolate flavor without being too sweet and the crème filling is custardy and creamy but not at all goopy. The people are very nice and helpful too, which is great. I arrived an hour and half before closing on a weekday and there were nine donuts left to choose from, so just forewarning they do sell out early!

One of the best donuts I ever had! Brioche style donuts. So many flavors to try. To nice to eat. We had the Boston Cream. The cream is so light. The place is small. The owner is very friendly and told us how he started his business and how he makes the donuts.

If you are looking for a light & fluffy, full of flavor donut to satisfy your craving this is the place! I arrived at 7:25, second in line, and by the time 7:30 opening rolled around the line was 30 people long. Lines tell you food is good! The ambiance of the establishment was no frills but very nice inside with very nice owners/employees. They had donuts displayed in the case, prices on the side wall, and a drink cooler on the side with various cold beverages. I went on a Sunday, when they had the special Sunday breakfast pudding. This was a custardy savory dish. The bacon and cheese were perfect in it. For donuts I ordered the caramel crunch, blueberry lemonade, peach crisp, homer and a classic. All very tasty and fluffy.

    Donuts left at 10am!

Are these some of the best donuts in Maine? Yeah, I think so. And I've been telling everyone I know that. The donuts are fluffy, but strong enough to withhold the incredibly generous toppings and glazes. My partner had a lemon poppy seed and it was GLAZED (at some places a glaze is a just suggestion, and then you're left with a mouthful of dry, flavorless donut... that's not the case here). It had that punchy lemon flavor that was perfect for a hot day. I had the rhubarb crisp and, from the first to the last bite, with every mouthful I literally said, "This is one of the best things I've eaten in years." It was just so perfectly summery. Like the best rhubarb pie/rhubarb crisp I've ever had, but on a donut. I should have bought two. I know better for next time. They have some classic donut options (boston creme, emoji, cinnamon sugar) that are always available, but the rhubarb crisp (for example) is part of their seasonal menu. I've seen they do a similar donut with apple compote in the autumn... It's not weird to drive two hours for donuts, right? Asking for a friend. Personally, the prices don't bother me. They're pretty big donuts, and also... Lovebirds in Kittery and Holy Donut in Portland are charging just as much. I think the biggest issue here is... they sell out, and they sell out fast. "Especially days that start with S," the owner told me. So if it's like 10am on a weekday, sure, you *might* get the flavor you want. I'd strongly suggest preordering. (SIDE NOTE: Their donuts are vegetarian friendly! eg not fried in lard)

Apple crumb pie and tiramisu! Fabulous!

Absolutely the best donut ever Tiramisu! The owner was so great and friendly. I wish we lived there. Best experience ever!

Since it was between breakfast and lunch we decided to stop into Atlantic Baking for a coffee and a pastry. Atlantic Baking is an unassuming shop right along what I'm going to consider a main street through Rockland. Not necessarily THE main street, but the Main-est we saw, so I'm sticking with that. Inside are several cases of pastries, breads, rolls, donuts and other baked goods that looked at me as if to say "I dare you". There was a cinnamon roll-ish thing that looked really good, and a Vanilla latte are what talked to me most. The staff (two young ladies on this morning) were busy hustling and, even with that, were helpful as they tried to keep taking care of customers. The vanilla latte was SUE-PERB, albeit a bit hot for my taste (had it let is cool first). As we sat having our halfway-between-breakfast-and-lunch-but-not-really-brunch snack there was a steady stream of customers, I'm guessing about 50/50 regulars and cruisers. Aside from pastries, coffees and teas, there's a cooler with canned/bottle beverages for the on-the-go beverage drinker. With as much activity as was going on during our visit you'd think it'd be difficult to keep clean, but there was a gentleman who came out frequently to take care of emptied tables, trash, etc. There are windows into the baking area, proving that they've got nothing to hide. Most everything is made on site with fresh, natural ingredients by people who take pride in what they do. Atlantic Baking is a charming place and a nice stop for a mid-morning snack

We arrived early and found a spot in the very small lot they have next to the building. There were plenty of street spots open within walking distance as well. LOL There is usually a wait, so just be prepared for it. I was able to put our name on the list and we walked around the area. Our server was great - wow was she energetic. Zipping around, smiling and engaging with all of the customers. Our food was delicious!! The sticky bun...we managed to snag one of the last few left. Again, get there early if you don't want to miss out. The corned beef hash - amazing Biscuits - YUM Gravy - savory goodness. Home fries - flavorful and not too greasy. Eggs - perfect! This cozy breakfast and lunch spot is popular with locals and visitors, so you'll likely have to wait for a table. It is definitely worth the wait, but If you're in a hurry, check to see if a seat is available at the counter. Service at Home Kitchen is warm and welcoming, and you're in for a treat if you're lucky enough to sit in Zan's area (short for Suzanne). I couldn't decide between a tuna sandwich or a grilled cheese, and she suggested combining both into a tuna melt. Brilliant! Along with a shared order of large fries, it was a tasty and filling lunch. The best part? All of it was gluten free! Home Kitchen bakes their own GF bread and pastries, and they are far superior to grocery-store GF baked goods. Even though we were sated from lunch, Zan encouraged us to order dessert, since they had a GF chocolate cupcake with salted caramel frosting. On her recommendation, we got two cupcakes to go - a GF chocolate cupcake for me, and a pumpkin cupcake with maple cream cheese frosting for my friend -- which we enjoyed later in the day from the comforts of home. Wow. Super delicious. More please!

We knew we'd be hiking all day (and had a heavy dinner planned) so we stopped at Earth and Flow to pick up some lighter bites. This was around 10am on a Thursday, and we were the only customers. It took about 45 minutes to get our food (no other customers ever came in; it didn't appear they were making any to-go orders). There were two employees that day, one who was making our order and one who was on her phone. We got: 1. Tara's Peanut Butter Heaven smoothie (banana, peanut butter, chocolate, almond milk) and the Tropical Storm smoothie (mango, pineapple, strawberry, orange juice, coconut milk, almond milk): I don't know how this is possible - maybe they were made in the same blender? - but these tasted identical. They were also liquidy. Personally, I prefer my smoothies so thick it's hard to suck through a straw. 2. the Thai wrap (almond-ginger pate, lettuce, mango, red pepper, cabbage, basil, mint, cilantro, ginger almond dipping sauce): this was okay - there was *a lot* of mint stems - but the ginger almond dipping sauce tasted purely of soy sauce - way, way too salty for me. 3. the Sun Tuna wrap (tuna salad made from sunflower seeds, not fish, combined with lemon, Bragg's amino acids, celery, pickles, and romaine lettuce): my favorite of the three! Such a unique take on a vegan tuna, but the celery was literally long uncut stalks. 4. the Sante Fe wrap (cashews, lemon, parsley, cayenne pepper, vegan mayonnaise, black beans and avocado): my partner's favorite of the three, but I found it bland, also there was no avocado and LOTS of romaine... which isn't an ingredient in this wrap. ^ I appreciated that all three wraps came on a bed of lettuce, because the wrap itself was *so* stiff and gummy in texture that we ended up dumping the interior onto the greens and eating it salad style. 5. Earthy Delights (4 Medjool dates stuffed with almond butter, cardamom, and ginger): the BEST thing we got were these stuffed dates. The combination of the rich almond butter, earthy cardamom, and spicy ginger were unlike anything I've had in recent memory. Do not miss out on these! For me, this missed the mark. But it's fantastic that an option like this exists in Rockland.

Further reading boasts that they've received multiple awards and accolades, though the last one seems to be from 6 years ago. (As they say, time changes everything.) After walking around the beautiful grounds and event spaces, the young hostess who greeted us told us confidently that we would not be disappointed. Such hype and a charming setting could be a set up for disappointment, and it was. The friendly and attentive waiter tried to recite the specials but had to check his notes and wasn't certain about some ingredients or pricing. We chose the toast special "with house-made bread, cheese and seasonal berries". Immediately after ordering it, he asked if we wanted the bread service as well. We just ordered the toast . . . It was thin bread spread with bland cheese, a few macerated strawberries, a drizzle of balsamic and some greens on top (because you always put balsamic glaze and a few greens on top at an Italian-inspired restaurant?) Cliché, bland and no way those were local strawberries this early in the season. I like a simple starter but that depends on having flavor. (We had better avocado toast for breakfast at Joe's Flat Iron Cafe in Skowhegan a few days before.) Next we shared the Farmer's Salad, appetizingly and nostalgically served in a hand-turned wooden bowl. The crisp, fresh greens were radicchio, frissé, and romaine with house croutons, shaved Parmesan, pork belly pieces and a tasty dressing. Good effort overall but 1) what local farm produced those greens in early May ("ultimate farm to table"?), 2) I'm over trendy, greasy and sinewy pork belly replacing good, crispy bacon and 3) It was a simple salad I could have made at home. Where was the wow? We again went with the seasonal special for the main - house-made ravioli stuffed with house-made ricotta, lobster pieces and vegetables in an herb infused oil. Sounded great, looked good but another bland disappointment. The vegetable on top (garnish?) was roasted pea shoots that were dry and stringy. Sautéed cabbage was mixed with the raviolis. A flavorless filler. But kudos for including locally foraged fiddle heads to add seasonal color and interest. The pasta was well made but the cheese filling was just bland. As was the colored but flavorless herb oil. (And now I understand why Italian cooks say cheese doesn't go with seafood.) We asked for salt, got a strange look but they brought it. I have to give them credit for carefully crafting an uplifting and appealing setting. The gardens, event buildings, main house and dining spaces have an intoxicating atmosphere. And they clearly have their fans. (A woman at the next table who was eavesdropping on our conversation about the pros and cons of the food pointedly said to us as she left so that others could hear "I hope they got your meal right".) Bless her heart. Fine to support the home team (Maine plates on her car) but it's good theater more than great food. Overhyped and too expensive for what it is.
