I have an RTD CollegePass and commute from Denver to Boulder several times a week, so I have become increasingly familiar with the RTD system, particularly the regional busses.
For the most part, the bus drivers on the BMX/BX/BV route are suprisingly pleasant--I've definitely experienced a few disgruntled drivers but they seem to be few and far between. The busses run quite frequently throughout most of the day and hourly in the late evening. Although the departure times are generally accurate, it seems that RTD has in no way accounted for contstruction delays and heavy traffic on Rt 36(that has been going on for over a year) in their estimated arrival times. Of course, RTD is not entirely to blame for this. I don't expect them to miraculously predict fluctuations in rush hour traffic and provide me with a completely accurate arrival time for each trip. I'm just saying, if a bus is CONSISTENTLY arriving to a destination 20 minutes late, maybe it's time to tweak the time tables a bit?
As much as I appreciate RTD saving me from the hassle of driving in rush hour, there's not a whole lot else I can say about them that's positive.
The fact that there is no fully functional train system in the Denver metro area is as pathetic as it is appalling. Yes, there is the light rail....that serves a very small portion of the total area. I am specifically referring to RTD's painfully slow, extraordinarily costly endevor to create the "Northwest line" which will (theoretically) some day connect Denver to Westminster/Louisville/Boulder/Longmont. Some day. Maybe it's because I'm from the tristate area, where you can pretty much take a train(or subway) to any given part of the metro area, but I cannot comprehend how a system like FasTracks Northwest rail is not already in place-- nevermind the fact that RTD's projected date is now at 2042. I mean, isn't that how the West was founded? Railroads?
I wish RTD would spend their money completing useful projects instead of throwing away millions on things that, when it comes down to it, are not particularly useful. As another reviewer mentioned- the automated response system and the card reader. Sure, it's convenient to swipe my card... but was it really necessary? At all? The drivers are still supposed to verify the picture on the card, I don't even see how it would save time. And is it really that hard to train your employees to call out the stops on the bus? Especially when the alternative is pay exorbitant amounts of money to install a robot voice on all the busses? Apparently so.
RTD likes to advertise their award for best transportation agency in 2008 on the side of their buses. Maybe they should stop embracing their past and figure out their future. read more
