It wasn't terribly busy either, probably 16 guests including our party of 4 in the whole pub and we ordered relatively simple dishes too. We must have waited nearly an hour and a half after ordering! The food was mediocre, mine was actually a little on the cold side. I would expect a pub in such an isolated location to be something special in order to get return trade... I wasn't feeling it. Choice of beers were limited too, in a traditional pub like this I expect to be able to get some really good local ales but unfortunately the closest they had was 6X. Keep working at it, this place could be something special.. unfortunately not there yet.

Last time I went I had a starter of cured meats with some delicious warm bread. For my main I had a shoulder of beef, which was tender, juicy and delicious. I even had a dessert of bakewell tart which was hand baked and a perfect end to a lovely meal. Don't expect any pomp and ceremony in this place, the staff are friendly and very helpful and the whole experience is very down to earth. I would definitely go back for a repeat visit.

Of noted is the new addition of tapas style nibbles and starters (pata bravas, chroizo slices, iberico ham and feta stuffed peppers). And I've been long overdue for a review of the local favourite. We came today celebrating both Mother's Day and a 45 sapphire anniversary. I shared a lovely charcuterie with the missus, which includes the above mentioned iberico ham, chorizo slices and feta stuff peppers (all of which can be ordered separately off the small pates menu). Surprisingly the "ample" selection was plenty to share for two, and I can only guess that the "generous" portion would be meant for parties of four. I also enjoyed a lovely lamb roast that came with sides of kale, parsnips and perfectly roasted potatoes. Others in our party had the roast beef and roast pork; both of which I was told were delicious! We also shared a triple chocolate dessert that had an amazingly sweet and tart passionfruit sorbet. All of this was enjoyed with a few pints of Amstel, bottles of champagne and fantastic service. I'm looking forward to the next family occasion to celebrate at the Gumstool.

The service was friendly and efficient, drinks were brought and food orders taken. Lovely hot bread and starters included calamari, devilled kidneys and moules mariniere. All were pronounced excellent and the mains were fish and chips, skate, rib eye steak and scallops. We couldn't manage deserts or coffee so we took a walk around the delightful grounds before heading for home. The bill for four was £123 including a bottle of Torrontes Altosur good value, we thought. It's on the list for a revisit.

I'm a vegan, so my expectations for finding something tasty at a UK Pub didn't seem very high. Even in the US, I find pub menus about the most vegan-unfriendly. I didn't see anything on the menu to eat, so I e-mailed them in advance to see if there were some options available. Not only did they get back to me right away, but they offered me several off-menu options for starters, dinner, and even dessert: Starters: Soup of the day (we can do a veg soup if you book) Orange & Walnut Salad with Watercress & Balsamic Dressing Sun-Blushed Tomato, Olive & Artichoke Salad Dinner: Mushroom Stuffed Vine Tomatoes with Tempura Veg & Salsa Verde Dressing Cous Cous Stuffed Peppers with Mixed Salad & New Potatoes Marinated Tofu & Noodle Stir fry with Bean Sprouts Dessert: Red Wine Poached Pear With Sorbet Fruit Salad with Fruit Coulis Glazed Pineapple with Mango & Chlli Are you kidding me? I don't get great options like this even when eating at restaurants with vegan options. I got the orange/walnut salad, cous cous stuffed peppers and glazed pineapple and everything was fantastic! Some of the best food I've ever eaten. This place can really cook. (By the way, my non-vegan colleagues loved their food as well) If you are vegan and want to go here, please e-mail them in advance, so they can provide some options and plan for your visit. Not only was the food great, but the place has a nice cozy atmosphere and the owner and staff are great. Not only was the service great, but the owner actually drove us all back to our hotel in Swindon, which isn't that close. I can't say enough about this place, because it was such a surprise. I wish they would come to Minneapolis and set up a restaurant here, because it would beat every pub in town. The next time I go to Swindon, I will be back.

I discovered Three Crowns while working as a consultant in nearby Swindon one summer. This cozy pub was the "go-to" spot whenever the team needed a break from our normal routine (hotel food or late night kebab trucks). Particularly memorable was the "Taste of the Wild"-- kangaroo, ostrich, and venison. The meat wasn't too gamy, and cream sauce was amazing! The homemade desserts are also fantastic. They even have a proper English cheese tray that they roll right up to your table. The Stilton I tried was far and away the best I've ever eaten. And cheese for dessert! Boy, the British sure know how to live! It's a lovely drive into the countryside (including some sketchy single-lane roads!) and well worth it once in a while to splurge on a great meal!
