The Royal Oak is a busy good value out of town gastro-pub located about a mile out of Marlow. The building is fairly old, with several small rooms that have been knocked through into each other and lots of character. The pub is however up to date with a modern menu and free WiFi on offer.
A good menu has eight starters and four specials, ranging from £3.75 to £7.50 including roast tomato soup; breads with balsamic & olive oil; warm confit of chicken and olive ballotine with pepperonata, cannellini bean salad and balsamic dressing; Indian spiced mackerel with lime & ginger relish and pomegranate and mint raita; local wild mushroom fricasse with toasted brioche. There are around nine main courses and four specials ranging from around £11 to £16.50 including roast Chiltern lamb rump with dauphinoise potatoes; Grimsby haddock fillet 'en papillotte' with rouille and buttered new potatoes; seared little Marlow rabbit on Rosti potato with crispy baby squid; lemon sole with samphire and Bearnaise sauce; baked sweet potato, feta, baby spinach and thyme strudel. I had one of the standard starters: seared scallops and braised Stockings farm pork belly on celeriac and apple rémoulade for £7.50: this was lovely and a nice twist on the usual scallops and bacon dish. I followed this with creamy chicken and pancetta pie with a puff-pastry lid and buttered cabbage (no potatoes or other 'stodge') for £12.50: this was very nice, but I thought it was a little salty. A nice selection of puddings were available for around £5-7 including rhubarb fool with elderflower syrup; honey-roast figs with toffee yoghurt and thyme shortbread; plus a selection of sorbets, ice creams and cheeses. There is a lot of parking, but the place gets busy so you may struggle to park or get a table at times. Update June 2012
