The Gingerman in Norfolk Sqare is outstanding, no complaints there, Gingerman at Drakes is a little more expensive and not as good quality, Ginger Pig isn't bad but they use a microwave for some dishes, I've yet to try the newest establishment 'The Ginger Dog'

They do offer a Dining Club discount on food (must include a main course) of 10% - this is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 'a steak for a tenner' deal on Thursdays. The whole pub is undergoing refurbishment in early 2024 inside and out which is great news as it was looking a bit tired when we last visited. Better weather sees the use of the large field for parking and al-fresco dining which proves very popular, especially at weekends as the pub is located in the South Downs National Park and is just a (steep) walk from the South Downs Way.

Located on the fringes of Hassocks and overlooking a beautiful stretch of Sussex countryside (great for a post Sunday roast walk to preserve the waistline!), the pub has the advantage of space that Brighton establishments sometimes lack. You would be hard pressed not to find a parking space and the same applies to seating within. The pub provides a cozy bar including a pool table if you fancy stopping by for a swift pint, the 'Keymer' bar for a more relaxed beverage and a large, yet homely dining area if you have come to eat. I will come back to the food in a minute. In the summer, the expansive secluded garden is perfect for children to bomb about, or for those summer nights when the weather is pleasant (of course, a bit hit and miss in this country!). The menu is wide ranging (check the website for a current list of dishes) and offers traditional, quality pub food. A lot of the produce is locally sourced and cooked to order. Sometimes this does mean that you wait a little longer for your meal, but the wait is worth it in such a nice environment. This is a great pub to consider for a Sunday roast, especially if you live in Brighton and have access to a car. They will happily take bookings and also cater for private parties in the dining area. I would have liked to see a wider range of ales on tap, but they do try and keep a local brew or two in rotation. Aside from that, expect your regular range of alcoholic tipples on offer. Many moons ago, in my youth we used to walk to the Thatched from Burgess Hill for our Friday drinking sessions and I would still make that walk! I guess the one negative is the location if you are without transport, but if you do make the pilgrimage from the station, I believe you will be glad that you did.

The atmosphere is your country Pub. The owners are very friendly and welcome guests and regulars equally with a hand shake and warm smile. I was there on a Friday. The special was Fish & Chips. The perfect lunch time meal. The food is hot and portions generous. Unlike some places The Five Bells serve cod - not halibut nor haddock. The fish is fresh and is paired with plenty of chips. I washed mine down with a half Shandy (I wanted to relive a childhood memory) then I tried a half pints of two of the pub's local beers. Dessert was a 10 year old Laphroig scotch. Very much a village pub, it has an excellent reputation for welcoming new people. I know this as I have been with my brother, who is from Thakeham nearby. A very small menu but impressive. I like the idea of take away Fish and Chips, which is very popular. Very nice place to stay for quiet weekend. Nearby is the Alexandro Bastedo Animal Santuary..well worth a visit!

It's such a lovely setting, in a beautiful old thatched house in the middle of nowhere. (Hassocks but you'd need to drive or take a taxi from the town or station). The staff are so pleasant, our beautiful waitress couldn't do enough for us and spoke to us like we were old friends. Before we sat down at our table, we decided to have a drink in the big comfy seats by the bar first which settled us in nicely. They don't offer much cider wise but have some tasty draught beers. We were seated and opted for a bottle of Malbec. The starters came out quickly and looked to die for. I opted for the crispy pigs head which was delicious, set off by the langoustine that had been brushed with rosemary. Unfortunately, I found a small hair on my plate but after still demolishing the food and discreetly telling the waitress, the chef offered me a complimentary pudding. Winning. For main course I opted for the guinea fowl which was hands down one of the best dishes I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Mouth-wateringly moist (ew sorry - I hate that word but there is no other way to describe it) with shredded wing meat in a crispy breadcrumb coating which added a dynamic texture, butternut squash purée, artichoke fondants and a morel jus... WOWEEE. An excellent combination - I was distraught to finish it. I rounded off the evening with a cheeseboard - the exquisite Balcombe Blue made another appearance which I was chuffed about, finished with Irish coffee and truffles. BOOM. OUSSHHH. The decor was just how i had imagined, however a little un-kept (rusty windows with a draft although it was closed) but i suppose that's the cottage feel! I think if i hadn't walked in with such high expectations due to friends comments i may have given 4 stars.
