The staff were…read morehelpful and friendly and the seating upstairs comfortable (I'm 6'4", and sometimes that's an issue). When we were seated, we were offered a drink and a bag of potato chips. After that, they handed out the boxed lunches we had pre-ordered. We each had the veggie wrap. We both thought it was outstanding. Because of the large bag of chips we had just had, we each ate only half of our wraps and took the other half home for dinner. I was impressed with the flavor, freshness and quality of the wrap. It came with a very good pasta salad and a chocolate brownie (excellent). The beverage service was well done, with staff coming by periodically to offer drink refills. A variety of soft drinks and coffee were complimentary throughout the ride. And we got to take our glass home as a souvenir. The ride itself is scenic for part of the way. Leaving Staunton out into the countryside did involve a fairly long stretch where there were trees on both sides, but you couldn't see into the distance. Then things opened up. There was periodic recorded commentary about the history of the area, about trains and some about the mountains and other sites we passed. Halfway through the trip, we stopped and they explained that half of us in the dome needed to get our things and go downstairs for a few minutes so they could reverse all of the seats (so we wouldn't be riding backwards on the trip back.). That process seemed to take over 20 minutes (a long time), but it did make the outside viewing on the trip back much more enjoyable. The ticket isn't cheap, but it's a good experience, the staff are nice and hardworking and the food (what we ordered) was quite good. If you are looking for a train ride with incredible views, you likely would prefer the Amtrak options, including between Denver and Emeryville, CA. But this is a pleasant diversion for a few hours. We went mid-April. I suspect the experience is different in the fall and at other times of the year.

My ride left Goshen, on time, at 3:00PM on Friday, Oct 2, headed for Staunton on a 2 hour journey. We made it as far as just South of Buffalo Gap (in between the entrance to Elliot Knob and Shenandale Skeet Club) We had to side track because an Amtrac train was headed towards us at 60MPH. We sat on the side track for, at least, 15 minutes until the Amtrac flew past us. We then reversed course and followed the Amtrac back to Goshen. The trip ended at the beginning of the area I was excited about seeing (the track area between Buffalo Gap and Staunton) as the route we road was parallel to RT42. You can see the exact same views from your car driving to Goshen. The tracks move away from RT42 just before Buffalo Gap. The ride write up shows the train traveling thru these areas. We never made it. Other than my first train ride, I wasted $280.00 on a lounge car. Do not book a ride with the expectation of traveling the route listed because it may not happen. The lounge car and the staff were great, thats the only reason for 3 stars. I feel cheated.

There's even a vending machine if you want to get a candy bar or a drink for your flight, but remember that the rules on liquids still apply here. Eventually, the other passengers arrived and then the crew and the TSA and the local cops. I do NOT recommend this establishment due to poor customer service and unmaintained properties. My…read morewife and I had booked a 4-night stay over the 4th of July weekend (total cost over $1,000) but we checked out 2 nights early because of the state of the property. If you're looking for a fun, comfortable, outdoorsy stay in the area, check out the Postcard Cabins instead! THE GOOD: The property is located in a beautiful area. Views are great. I really like the food at Bearr Appetit restaurant -- kudos to the chef! THE BAD: Customer service is poor. I get the impression management must have simply stopped caring at some point. Example 1: I tried contacting the property multiple times before our reservation. Half the time, nobody answered the phone. I left a voicemail once and nobody responded. The two times someone answered, they promised to call me back with an answer to my question, but never did. Example 2: The morning of July 4, only one server showed up on time for her shift at Bearr Appetit. The poor girl was HUSTLING to keep up with multiple tables, indoors and outdoors, in hot and humid weather. I'm standing alone at the host stand waiting to be seated for about 5 minutes. A manager (owner?) is sitting at the cash register counting the money. Finally the manager/owner stands up, starts heading the the kitchen, sees me, and asks, "Are you waiting to be seated?" I say yes. She POINTS AT THE POOR WAITRESS who's struggling to keep up and says, "She'll be right with you." Then proceeds into the kitchen. Finally I asked the waitress if I should seat myself, which she appreciated and agreed to. Example 3: Upon departing 2 nights early due to the condition of the property (discussed below), my wife wrote an email explaining the issues and asking if they'd refund one night as a compromise. It's been a week now and we're starting to doubt we'll ever get so much as an acknowledgement. THE UGLY: My wife and I stayed with our dog in the Speckled Owl cabin. It's a good sized, secluded property, but it soon became clear to us that management puts minimal effort into maintaining it. Example 1: The first thing we noticed was that the ground floor was COVERED IN DEAD MILLIPEDES. We immediately called maintenance, who promptly came to vacuum them up. But in less than 24 hours, the floor was COVERED IN LIVING MILLIPEDES. This made the first floor basically unusable to us. If we needed something from the kitchen we had to tiptoe around the bugs. By Day 2, the millipedes were migrating upstairs to the bedroom. (That's when my wife decided we needed to go.) Example 2: Enormous cobwebs everywhere, inside and outside. Example 3: Patio and terrace furniture was filthy and disgusting. Bird poop and other crap all over the chairs and tables. Example 4: Linens and towels were old and worn to the point that we wondered how clean they were. Example 5: The mattress was awful. You can feel the the springs and if one person moves, everyone moves. Bottom line, we were extremely disappointed in Lydia Mountain Lodge & Cabins. We feel there's a lot of potential to make this into a special place given the wonderful location, but that the current ownership/management has no real interest in the guest experience.

There…read moreare multiple safety rest areas along Interstate 81 in Virginia, which runs roughly 325 miles from the Tennessee state line near Bristol to West Virginia near Winchester. They are operated and maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation. This particular rest area is located along I-81 northbound near Mount Sidney, and it serves as a straightforward, functional stop for travelers needing a break. We pulled in while traveling north and found it to be an easy on-and-off exit with clear signage. Parking is laid out logically, with plenty of car parking close to the main building and truck parking separated on the other side and beyond the building, which helps reduce congestion. There is a single restroom building, and during our visit the bathrooms were clean, functional, and well maintained. Several picnic tables sit just off the parking lot, including a mix of shaded and unshaded tables, making it convenient to stop for a quick snack or stretch. That said, this is a basic, no-frills rest area with very little natural shade or tree cover overall, so on hot or sunny days it may feel a bit exposed. The walkways and surrounding grounds were clean, and everything appeared to be in good working order. Overall, this Mount Sidney rest area does exactly what it's supposed to do: provide a safe, and clean place to stop briefly before getting back on the road.

Our week was 48--right in the middle of nothing. It's the height of off-season, so understand that my review may be tainted by the fact that most "things" are closed, there's no snow, and everyone is gearing up for the storms to come. The condo was nice. Well-equipped and cozy. Kids loved playing in the downstairs "hot tub," but the water got cold before the entire spa was filled. Upgrades will be needed at some point...but not sure that they'll survive the timeshare tradition. I was lucky to find someone willing to take this off my hands. Paying the annual fee was only slightly less than 3-4 nights at a decent hotel elsewhere. If you're able to buy into RCI and enjoy the benefits of banking and playing the weeks/points game, this is a decent start. I wouldn't return every year. Particularly in the off-season.
