The first time trying this place, we decided to call to place our order. I ordered the chicken. The owner was rude and said that it would take 45 minutes to make a T-Bone steak and couldn't not do it. It was 8pm and he was stating that it would be too close to 9pm, as they close, to make the T-Bone steak. That didn't make a bit of sense, since they had ample time to make the T-Bone steak. So I ended up ordering the pork. He said it would take about 20 minutes. After finishing my order, the owner just hung up without saying anything else or asking if there was anything else I wanted. My first impression of the place was that it was dirty and disgusting inside as it was like someone's home and restaurant all in one. Things were scattered everywhere and there were flies all over the area and in the case with the desserts. It was kind of funny to see that they sold underwater by the counter. I came in to pick it up after 25 minutes and it was still not ready. I to wait about 50 minutes from the time to place my order until I received it for it to be ready. The food itself was a whole tray, so there was a lot. The rice was kind of hard, which showed that it needed to be cooked more. Also, the tray came with the meat, fries, and plain white rice. Overall, it was just too dry and needed some kind of sauce. Overall, don't expect top notch customer service here. The staff is rude, the food takes forever and is tasteless, and the interior of the restaurant is absolutely putrid. Only giving it a 1 because the fries were decent. Long story short, I did come back one more time to give this place another chance as my husband was craving Portuguese food and this was one of the only places left. I'll go with the four star. Probably would do 3.5 if I could. I stopped to get some ribs. The meal comes with fries and rice. Three fairly large ribs. The fries - good to go, an A for grade. The rice was just so- so. I would need to spruce it up more with butter and pepper. Maybe skip it all together next time. The ribs- OH MY GOODNESS!!!! Very good!!! A+ grade. They are spicy. Dry with no BBQ sauce. Stay away if you don't like spicy food. Other than that, it was good eating. I was going to wait but just kept going back to eat more from my take home plate. Give it a try. Not the greatest but not bad for the area. It's a take out place so don't expect it to be a sit down and eat restaurant. In Portugal it would be considered a dive. No where near what iron bound barbecues are. Even Linden and Roselle are probably better. read more

Another hidden secret of South river. Little building looks like a house, you park in the driveway. Very simple excellent portugese barbecue. Chicken, ribs, rice, fries. SO affordable, feed 6 for 20-30 bucks. Food is home made and the quality shows. Very consistent. Always good. read more

First time and last time to order. I should have paid attention to the other review saying as much. I called for a pick up order of full ribs and rice only. A lady semi greeted me (I don't speak Portuguese), and I like politely said order for pick up. She goes in the back, spoke at length to a rotund old guy. Rotund old guy comes out asking what I wanted. His delivery could have been better, but whatevs. Still, I politely said pick up for me. Lady comes out with my order. Hmm. Looks small for a full order. But whatevs. I pay cash, $14- not bad. I asked if there's hot sauce I can have on the side. Lady again goes out back, speaks to the rotund old guy at length. Rotund old guy comes out again, rudely asking what I wanted. Repeated what I requested politely. Rotund old guy motioned to my food, and said its inside. Ok, cool. I drive home. Open the container looking so forward to the meal. Wtf no hot sauce, 4 pieces of sad ass ribs, and bland ass rice. And dassit. I get so miffed, I called em to inquire about the damn hot sauce. Recognized the voice as same rotund old guy. Bottom line, apparently they don't give out hot sauce. Apparently, I should have asked them when I called to put extra hot sauce on the ribs when they make it. Hello? I mean this is the 1st time this ever happened?! I know rice is rice. But it taste like nothing as compared to other bbq spots. I'm just suggesting, but do not go here. Not worth it. I'd go to other places in the area like the Aldeia Nossa Bakery at 30 Main St, or further down the street at Lala's at 20 Jernee Mill, or Big Harlies at 506 Raritan st (closed today Tuesday though ).
