You get the impression a place like Helensburgh needs a nick nack shop almost as much as it does, for example, a post office or running water. It just strikes you as that sort of town.
Thankfully Rowan Gallery on West Clyde Street offers all the usual Papyrus-y type stuff. Quirky clocks, notepads, alternative gifts blah blah blah, you know the kind, because they're ten a penny elsewhere in the UK.
However this place really excels with its excellent little gallery situated at the back. Showcasing the work of local artists, on my visit I could have picked myself up a cracking painting of Glasgow if I'd had a spare 375 quid burning a hole in my wallet.
I didn't, as it happened, but I still very much enjoyed the look around. I'll be back. read more
