He is still for sale with nothing but an email saying sorry, we refunded you, you can't give you the dog with absolutely no good reason. They don't have an address or phone number. I asked for the manager, and she was not willing to have me talk to one. I'm telling you guys to avoid paying anything they weren't going to give me. My money back. Tell. Most beautiful and amazing experience from start to finish. I would choose this rescue over and over again! We fostered a turkey dog rescue and officially adopted him after 2 weeks! Nancy and Emel have been super helpful and took great care of my baby throughout the process. They kept me updated on his health, travel, CDC visit, arrival, sent me pictures throughout, and even sent us home with a cute doggy goodie bag. My newly adopted baby is perfect and I truly couldn't have asked for a better experience. This rescue is knowledgeable, genuine, and honest. We adopted a dog from Rovers Retreat about three months ago and the experience has been amazing. We primarily communicated with Sydney during the adoption process and after adoption. I appreciate the lengths they go through to ensure dogs are placed with the right family. In fact, after our initial phone interview, I realized that that while I would be devastated if we weren't selected to adopt our dog, there was no doubt he would have had a great life as I could see how much time and care Rovers Retreat puts in to making the decision in selecting the adoption family. A few months after we adopted our beautiful baby we heard of a situation where an owner of another dog had a medical crisis and was no longer able to care for her dog. She was going to bring her to a shelter as she had no else to turn to. Knowing this dog would never survive in a shelter environment and also knowing this would not have been the right fit at the time for our new dog, I reached out to Rovers Retreat to see if they could offer help. They assessed the situation, found transportation, a vet, and a groomer and she is now living her best life while waiting for her forever home. They quite literally saved this dogs life and helped out in a desperate situation. I fully intend to adopt again from Rovers Retreat and I am in awe of the dedicated people at this rescue. It's important to remember that this is a volunteer based program and people that spend their time helping animals are the best souls on earth. We could all take lessons from them in compassion and empathy. Do not waste your time. This "rescue" is not interested in adopting dogs to responsible dog lovers. After taking your money to apply for a dog and having you fill out an extensive application, if they actually contact you for an interview, they ask what your deal breaker for the dog would be. As any sane person would say, my only deal breaker is if a dog were to attack my children (not nip, not chase, but attack). Anyone who does not say this is either a liar or a psychopath. Apparently having an issue with a dog attacking your children will get you banned from adopting with them. However, they don't tell you this. Instead, they allow you to fall in love with a dog, bring your entire family to meet him, and then promise they will call you. They do not call. They refuse to respond to emails. Instead of being mature professionals, they completely ghost you. Then, they constantly post about how this poor dog is still looking for a family after SIX months, while loving families are ready and willing to adopt him. I am a life-long dog rescuer and have never considered purchasing a dog in my entire life. Unfortunately, my experience with Rover's Retreat has forced me to begin looking at dog breeders for the sake of mine and my children's broken hearts. They are doing an absolute disservice to animals and taking your money while they're at it. AVOID. read more

Don't bother. This organization is likely a scam. I applied for a senior golden I saw on Instagram and after applying, paying an applicatoin fee and an extensive interview, they quickly dismissed me because I'm too "active" with my current much younger dog. "The senior golden would not be able to keep up." I grew up with dogs my entire life. With each dog they lived until they were 14, 15 and 16 years so I am very much experienced and know how to care for senior dogs so OBVIOUSLY I don't plan on taking an 11-year-old senior dog on a 3-4-mile hike with me or to a dog beach. RR then continues to post sob stories on their social media pages with this senior dog (probably to gain likes, followers and attention) and to encourage people to apply for the dog for an application fee. Then will come up with some BS response as to why you're not a good fit. I'm guessing a lot of these dogs they post or on their website don't really actually exist and they're just collecting application fees. They do have a 1 star rating on Charity Navigator so doesn't surprise me one bit. Do your research everyone! read more

To start- via the contract you sign. You technically don't own the dog. If anything happens to you, you HAVE to give them back the dog to resell. The dog is essentially on lease to you. Not only did they charge me $500 for our dog, they brought him to us a 2 am and reeking of pee. We had to wash him literally three times. My dog had extreme separation anxiety and would cry whenever we were gone. He was a pug so naturally he had some weird and loud cries. A few of my neighbors started to complain and our landlord basically said we have 30 days to rehome him or we have to move. It's stated in our rental agreement. We were beyond devastated. Our dog was our third baby who we loved and took on many adventures and spoiled. He was so happy here, unless he was alone. And we had tried everything to soothe him while we were away. Panicking, I did what I thought was best by sending Danelle a message where the response from her was "UGH" and had zero empathy towards the situation. It wasn't a choice. My husbands company shut down for months and we had zero dollars to move. To make matters worse, their young employee Sydney who is shockingly in a lead position.... Said we were disgusting and giving up on our dog. I'm sorry... what?! It would cost 5k minimum to move and we could not afford that. Especially since my husband didn't working 1/3 of the year despite looking for jobs everywhere. BUT THATS NOT EVEN THE WORST PART. We were also able to speak with the foster to ask more specific questions about schedule, behavior, food, etc. We live out of state and made the trip to meet Balim and bring her home. She was such a loving, fun dog who immediately bonded with our golden. We are so happy we used a rescue instead of getting a puppy. Balim has made a seamless transition into our home and there have been no surprises regarding her or her behavior. My wife and I have been following Rovers Retreat on Facebook for about six months and were looking for a dog to adopt for our family. We knew we wanted to adopt and not go through a breeder, and found Rovers. We appreciate their love of animals and recognize that the staff is made up largely of volunteers. Seemed like a win. That being said, the process to adopt is not good. If you plan to adopt an animal right away you will quickly figure out that the process is a long one, and if you are OK waiting 1 to 2 months, maybe this is the organization for you. We applied (paid the $20 adoption fee) and waited for a couple of weeks to hear something. Anything. When I emailed and asked for a status we were told that we needed to interview, show a video of our yard, etc. No problem. After giving them all they asked for, we found out the dog we applied for was going to remain with the foster family because they fell in love with him. Bummer, but ok, it happens. Then the contact suggested another dog for us, and we sent a followup email with some reasonable questions: Age? Weight? Good with other dogs? Good with kids? When I emailed a couple of weeks later (!) we were told that the questions were "off putting" and they were concerned we were looking for a perfect dog without any problems. Huh? No, we are just asking some standard questions to make sure this one would be compatible with our family. Seriously? After a month of waiting, hoping, being disappointed, and then being told we asked questions that made us suspect, we decided to go with another organization. The people seem nice, I am sure they love animals, but their process is terrible and badly broken. read more

I adopted a big snuggly golden named Tofu from Rover's Retreat. This love eyed doggo brightens our family's life every day. Rovers's retreat is an impressive logistical operation. These pups are selected for temperament. Tofu was neutered, assessed by a vet, and are up to date on his vaccines. He came to us all the way from Turkey. For all of this the $1000 adoption fee seemed reasonable. I appreciated their thoroughness in making sure tofu was the right dog for us, and we the right home for him. rovers retreat is genuinely the best rescue i have worked with. the thought and care that goes into every adoption event, foster, and homing of dogs is indescribable. truly the kindest most thoughtful experience i have had working with a rescue. they go above and beyond to find homes for these dogs that otherwise would be stuck in shelters, the streets, and even other countries where dogs are grossly abused. working with jennifer, sydney, and the entire rovers team is an absolute pleasure. the reviews here bashing them are from irresponsible dog owners who should never be allowed to welcome a dog into their home again. you decided to welcome a family member into your home and discarded them. how can rescue not feel hurt when such wonderful pups are thrown to the wayside. it's a shame to see any bad reviews here, if i were you i would not take those into consideration as they did those dogs dirty. being a responsible dog owner means that your dog is a family member, if that is not the same commitment you would give your partner, child, mother, or grandmother please consider fostering rather than adopting. this is a commitment for the dogs ENTIRE LIFE, one that should not be taken lightly. if i had the ability to adopt more dogs from rovers retreat i would, for now i will foster through them. i give them 10 stars to their commitment via volunteering their time to run a rescue while managing their own lives, careers, families + friends, and finding wonderful homes for these pups. this is an unpaid and undervalued thing that the people running this rescue do. be kind to them and be kind to yourself, know what you are and aren't capable of. ask yourself if i were adopted how would i feel being returned? thank you for being an amazing team and doing what you do for these dogs! read more

I have fought myself extremely hard to try and not write a review on Rover's retreat. Due to unforeseen circumstances the dog we had adopted from them had extreme separation anxiety and we had done everything in our power to try and curve the problem. Everything from a "thunder jacket" to tons of toys and mental stimulation techniques I had researched to try and stop it. We had no intention of wanting to give him up but unfortunately got slapped with an order from our landlord that either the dog goes, or we all go. Needless to say, our kids come first even though we love this dog with all our hearts. I had a long string of bad luck throughout last year from unexpected travel from my father almost dying in another state, appendix surgery, and getting laid off from my job. Money got tight and we had to make sure the kids and the dog got fed. We were not able to get shots in time, but we made damn sure the dog was well fed, well exercised, and given tons of attention at every possible moment. Unfortunately we had to give our dog back to this rescue only to be treated like garbage. Let's go to yesterday, my daughter was having dinner in hermosa beach with my wife's friend and happened to run into Tofu (pug) the dog we had adopted, and Sydney ( one of the main volunteers) . Then during the interaction my 7 year old daughter was told that she should not pet Tofu, which is fine, but she was also told that her mother is a bitch. This is where I draw the line on writing this review. I don't know how you can be nasty to a 7 year old due to circumstances like these that were out of everyone's control. To the ones that have adopted here, I wish you great luck with your pups and I hope you never have to run into problems like this. We have had the most amazing experience with Rover's Retreat and their staff, fosters and everyone involved. We adopted our first dog through Rovers Retreat. I could tell immediately that they put the dog's well being first (as I feel is very necessary) and made sure we were a good fit together. I cant even tell you how perfect my girls have been for our family. During our first adoption if I could have dreamt of a "perfect" dog for our family she far surpasses any expectations I had. They reached out to us a few months later with a perfect "sister" and boy were they spot on. We weren't planning on getting a second dog quite yet but we had them meet and 24 hours later our family was complete. These girls are inseparable and have truly completed our family. We couldn't be happier and more in love with these two. Rovers Retreat was so professional, efficient and have even followed up with us to check in since our adoptions. I'm sad to say I did not have a good experience with Rover's Retreat. My experience is specific to Sydney M. at Rover's Retreat, so I cannot speak to anyone else who works here or if my experience with Sydney is representative of the entire organization. I sure hope it's not. Background: I contacted Rover's Retreat based on an interest in adopting a dog named Ivy (who is currently living in a foster home). The process was extensive, but I was willing to do whatever it took to show my family would be a great fit for this dog. I filled out the application on their website, paid an application fee, and then was contacted by a volunteer for an initial phone screening. I answered all of the specific questions they had on the phone and passed the screening. I was then asked to send a video tour of the inside and outside of my home. I did this right away and passed this screening. I was then moved onto the next step, which was speaking with the current foster parent. I spoke with the foster parent and took extensive notes based on our conversation. All went well with this conversation, so I contacted Sydney and let her know I was ready for the next step. Sydney contacted me late Thursday night and asked if I would come with my entire family (me, my husband and two kids) mid-week to meet the dog and, if all went well, we would take her home the same day. I asked if I could please schedule a quick visit with just my husband and me and, if all went well, come back with the kids soon after (ideally the weekend) to take her home (provided all went well with meeting the kids during that second and final visit). The reason for this request is that I have a one-year-old son and I wanted to ensure on the first meeting that the dog wouldn't be aggressive and/or have major behavioral issues before introducing him to the dog, since the foster parent personally didn't have any experience with the dog and a child that young. The dog is also a birthday gift for my 10-year-old daughter, and I didn't want the first meeting to be a huge disappointment for all involved if something went seriously wrong. I truly didn't think this would be a problem since the rescue was specifically trying to place Ivy in a home with kids and we made it this far in the process. Sydney at Rover's Retreat told me via text that they couldn't arrange two meetings because there was too much interest in Ivy, and it was against company policy to have two meetings. I responded that this was unfortunate since based on my conversation with the foster parent, I was told there wasn't any current interest (have a text where she tells me she has no scheduled calls with any other family so to not worry about her rescheduling our call) and that she's been fostering this dog for three months (which is longer than most dogs she fostered). Based on this, I asked Sydney if she would please reconsider our request and we would go wherever they wanted us to meet them at their convenience. I got a text on Sunday morning (today) from Sydney stating she talked to the foster parent and everything I shared with her was untrue and after speaking with the board they couldn't accommodate my request. She also mentioned a meeting with Ivy wouldn't guarantee a fit anyway. Oh, and she said she was bummed it didn't work out. I'm baffled and hurt. If the two-meeting request can't be accommodated, why not just leave it at that? Why send an insulting text insinuating an adopter is lying about a conversation they had with the foster parent? Why add insult to injury? Not only do I have the text message from the foster parent, but I also have my notes with all of the information shared on our call. Perhaps there was a miscommunication, but outright lying? I would have to be quite the sociopath to jot down and list untruthful notes from a phone call just for kicks. In the end, their placement process is unreasonable for willing and qualified adopters. I feel sad for how many of these foster dogs could be placed sooner with loving "furever" homes, but are on hold due their practices. We're a loving family who made it to the last step, but wanted to ensure safety for our kids. I'm also truly appalled to see all of the fundraising and begging for help from this rescue for dogs in need, when they have such unreasonable expectations, poor placement practices and awful communication. We're hoping our experience is a rare one and not reflective of this organization as a whole. But if it is: adopter beware! read more

I spent a lot of wasted time trying to work with this agency to get a rescue pup. Filled out the app, had a phone screen, and then never heard back. Regardless of the number of emails I have sent, they have never responded to my inquiries. This is very unfortunate, as I really wanted to adopt the dog with the eye disability, but I have had no luck. Of all the other rescues I have been contacting, Rover's Retreat has been the worst when it comes to communication. It really puts a stain on the rescue industry when you come across an agency that seems to ignore those who are truly interested in a shelter pet. This kind of follow through is the reason many people choose to go to breeders because they don't have to waste so much time simply trying to get a new pup. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this agency, as they do not follow through on their promises, they also schedule phone interviews and then never call, but then expect you to call them back. It seems like a very messy agency with very little respect for those wanting to help dogs in need. read more

Over the last 3 years I have adopted 2 senior pups from Rover's Retreat. Overall, my experience with the organization has been great and the dogs have brought so much joy to my life. Both dogs had extensive vet workups and had acute and chronic health issues addressed before being placed for adoption. The organization was clear and upfront about medical history and gave me all the records to provide to my vet. I am so grateful to Rover's Retreat for putting the time and money into saving these senior pets that have so much love to give in their golden years. I have volunteered for the LA city shelters and I have adopted 3 dogs from different rescue groups so I am familiar with how adoptions work. This rescue group (RoversRetreat) is AWFUL! I understand that it is hard work but communication is a MUST! This group is a clusterf....! I completed an application on line and got a confirmation but the rescue lost it??? We adopted a beautiful turkey dog golden who has been the center of our home and an essential part of our pack since she arrived. We love what they do so much that we continue to donate to their wonderful cause and hope to foster another pup soon. My husband and I adopted our sweet girl Sukie from Rover's Retreat in October 2022. The process was smooth and easy! Sydney, Nancy, and Kitti were so helpful with words of encouragement and advice after we brought Sukie home as she had lots of anxiety (Sukie came from China). We live in Fresno and they had no problem working with us! We lost our German Shephard mix (Willow, also a rescue) about a year prior and felt we were ready to give another dog in need a warm and loving home (aka spoil the shit out of). They asked appropriate questions to ensure Sukie would be a good match for us (we have two other rescue dogs, one of which is a senior). The day we did our meet & greet, all three ladies were very enjoyable to talk with and they have kept in touch with us asking about how Sukie is doing. They obviously VERY much care for the dogs that come through the rescue. All of our other dogs have been rescues from local shelters where there is no/very minimal follow up after adopting (although I do understand how slammed they are) so I appreciate the continued contact with Rover's Retreat. We are obsessed with Sukie! One of the best decisions we have ever made was adopting Sukie from Rover's Retreat. We owe Rover's Retreat the world for saving our girl and choosing us to be her forever home. read more

I became familiar with Rover's Retreat when my family needed to make the difficult decision to rehome my elderly mother's dogs, Jack and Jill; a pair of Yorkies who had never been a part of one another. Nancy was so kind and compassionate of this decision and spent much time and concern getting to know all about Jack and Jill - their health status, likes/dislikes, etc... It was as important to her as it was to me that they be placed in an appropriate foster environment waiting for their perfect family to take them in and provide them the love, attention and care they had grown accustomed to over the past 16 years. Nancy quickly identified a warm and loving foster mom, Emily who would care for Jack and Jill until a permanent family could be found for them. While there, Nancy and Emily kept me informed on their wellbeing and even sent pictures of them in their environment. Rover's Retreat were diligent in choosing just the right home for them and when Nancy sent me the picture of them with their new adoptive family, I knew she had made the perfect match! This was an emotional time for our family and I am forever grateful to Nancy and her Rover's Retreat team. We cannot recommend Rover's Retreat enough for all they do. I adopted my dog from rovers retreat and I can say they were a pleasure to work with. They do a have a rigid screening policy which shows how much they care about putting the dogs in the right homes. It's great to adopt from them because they can tell you so much about the dogs so you know you are getting a dog that will fit into your home and lifestyle. We're a big rescue family. We've rescued and fostered on and off for my entire life. Of all the rescues we've worked with, Rovers Retreat is the most impressive operation and the one we will continue to adopt from, recommend, and volunteer for. What we love and appreciate most is how they put the dogs first. It's hard for some of us to understand why we may not get selected for the pup we apply for, or why a rescue may not be able to budge on a specific part of their process. But the reality is, it's not about us - it's about finding these dogs the most ideal home to meet their unique needs so the dog doesn't end up without a home again. Rover's Retreat never loses sight of that. When we applied to adopt our first dog from them, we filled out an extremely thought provoking application and then hopped on the phone with Sydney who was incredibly professional, had clearly spent time reading our entire application, and even came to the conversation with a specific dog in mind for our family, one that wasn't actually the dog we had on our mind but felt perfectly suited for our family. Just as Sydney suspected, it was a match made in heaven. Now we have the pleasure of working with them as fosters. Despite always having a million and one things on their plate, they are such a dream to volunteer for. Always supplying resources, medical care, attention to all of their dogs in foster homes as well as their foster parents. I could go on for days about this rescue. The response was immediately, as well as everything else that followed.
