I'm always looking to try a unique eatery when I am away from my home turf. It's usually a little difficult to choose a cool, satisfying spot in the Santa Cruz area. Roux dat did not disappoint! Cons: restroom is in a land far far away - when all you need to do is wash your hands, this is a pain. Uhm, that's it for cons. Pros: very good customer service. Excellent Louisiana bottled beer offerings. Outstanding Crawdad and smoked andouille sausage maque choux. I wish I would have ordered a full dish of the Crawdad and sausage with brown rice. It was very delicious! And I wish I had packed an ice chest - then I could have placed an order to go. I should know by now when I hit the road, bring along at least the foldable ice box. The pulled pork with slaw sandwich was alright. I think a muffuletta might be a better choice. Oh, and I highly recommend the Abita Purple Haze beer. Refreshing and awesome flavor! Cool bottle, too. Ordered two po boys, excited to try some cajun food, but neither came with a side of fries like we expected. We asked the servers, who responded that it didn't come with a side, but then why would the menu state otherwise that it comes with a side option? Suuuper expensive food for just a fried sandwich. And it wasn't all that great. Fried ok but there was no flavor---which is the whole point for coming somewhere Cajun centered. The fountain drink flavors were all off (don't know if it was the tap or lack of syrup to compensate). Just altogether not a great experience. At least the servers weren't rude. read more

It's always a bit iffy getting Cajun food outside of Louisiana, but this place delivered on the flavor. AND vegan/vegetarian options too ?!?!? Yes, this was a place I had try and I am happy I did. I should have known they were going to have bad service after calling to ask if they had outdoor seating. The young man's responses to my question whether they had outdoor seating was, "yes, but we close in 50 minutes." Okay. We still chose to go because we had nearly 1 hour before closing time. Based on the reviews the food was good and we wanted to give it a try. Upon entering I just guessed which one of the boys answered the phone, it had to have been the only one of the three there that looked like he didn't want to be there. His poor attitude carried on even while we ordered and while others came in behind us. Their stews are quite tasty. I would recommend the half and half. They basically have 2 stews for you to try with the rice separating them. The jambalaya (has andouille, shrimp, and chicken) and gumbo (has chicken, sausage, and okra) are the most popular stews. I actually like the shrimp and corn etouffee. It's creamy and not too salty. The gumbo and jambalaya are good, but not amazing or life changing. The beignets are good and the bourbon sauce is quite tasty as well. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The few tables outside to seating which is great on a nice day. The only catch is that it takes awhile for your food to be ready. They bring the food outside where your table is at. read more

This find was simply by our digital version of throwing a dart at a map. My wife Joyce opened the Yelp app and we put in search Capitola for a new restaurant to try. And happily this restaurant showed up 1st. This Gem is off the tourist beaten path and worth the drive. Yes it's in a little strip mall setting, one might even describe it as a hole in the wall appearance from the outside. You know the old saying " looks can be deceiving" well when it comes to this place very true. The emphasis by this family owned restaurant is not placed on the ambiance or the decor. No it's all in the food and how glad will you be. Now if you get there and your in line waiting to place your order and the cashier/waitress/hostess is on the phone answering questions. Just stand there, be quiet, be patient, and you will be rewarded with a delicious Cajun/Creole dishes of your choosing. My only disappointment was we live in San Jose. read more

It's been over 6 months and I can't stop thinking about those amazing fluffy & crispy beignets. Drooling just thinking about them bc every bite was the perfect bite. Prices are great too. The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars is because one of the workers here is not very friendly or helpful at all. When we called to find out if they have outdoor seating, he said yes but we close in fifty minutes, even though they closed in an hour and ten minutes. And what does that have to do with if you have outdoor seating? This place is located in a small plaza and has a smaller than expected storefront. It's tucked away and can be a little hard to find if you're visiting for the first time. The location on Yelp also led us to post office in the adjacent plaza so be aware of the pin drop location on Yelp. My boyfriend and I got the plate with 1/2 shrimp and corn étouffée and 1/2 gumbo with chicken and sausage. Their food is reasonably priced and if you're not extremely hungry, one plate + an order of their sides can fill two people. The food was good! Both the étouffée and gumbo was very seasoned very well and had just enough spices and savoriness to pair deliciously with their rice. A couple cons... the food wasn't as hot as I would have liked it and I wish there was more rice. Store was small so seats were limited but we managed to grab a table. There isn't a lot of privacy since you're dining by the line to order so if that bothers you, I recommend ordering to-go. Food came out quick and customer service was great. Casually located in a very average-looking shopping plaza in Capitola is a not-so-average southern joint. Roux Dat's intense flavors, quirky New Orleans decor, and enthusiastic staff make it one of the best places to eat in the Santa Cruz area. As a UCSC student, I discovered Roux Dat towards the end of my senior year and was so bummed that I didn't know about it sooner. Now, every time I visit Santa Cruz, I'm sure to stop in for a flavorful and generously portioned meal. My fiancee are taking a quick sojourn to Santa Cruz, and after putzing around the mall, we needed dinner. We are both "N'awlins" food novices, so ww thought we'd give it a go. Essentially, everything is a stew/etoufee/jambalaya. I ordered the chicken chili, my fiancee the jambalaya. The chicken chili etoufee was thick, full of flavor, and swimming with juicy chicken, well cooked beans, and good amounts of the "holy trinity." She enjoyed the jambalaya, but said it was quite spicy (she likes it spicy, but if you don't, heads up). We were both super impressive with the garlic bread. Definitely not the typical restaurant garlic bread one is used too. Full of garlic, yes, but other spice, too. This is a hidden gem. The food is very much soul food on the west coast. I love po'boys and have had them all along the Gulf Coast. This comes pretty close to those which is saying something. Don't set the bar and compare to New Orleans that's not achievable anywhere but there and on the Gulf Coast. I think as far as freshness, flavor, and quality goes this place is a worthy destination. We also had a couple of stews as our side dishes the Jambalaya and the veggie Black bean and corn maque Chox. These are super good and are generous portions as well. What's not to like. This is for their service. My husband and I came in when it was not busy at all. Put in my order. Then a few couples came in after us. One of the couples was Asian as well. Right after they made their order and sat down, they got their food. After a few minutes they realized it wasn't their food. They sent it back and we both realized they mistook us for each other. They took the plates back and remade the other couple's order and gave them their dishes first (again). I went up to them and the guy just says "we goofed". Okay, so no apology or offering a soda or anything for messing up our order and making us wait longer than people who came in after us. Food was okay. Tasted worse because they gave the plates to someone else and had it sitting in the kitchen for a long time before giving it to us. So the food came out lukewarm. Had a delicious fried catfish sandwich and cajun fries with lemonade that wasn't overly sweet. The waitress and cashier was very friendly and provided excellent service.
