What do you know, a Louisiana restaurant in Capitola. Had to try this one. Food, pretty good. Lunch menu focus on po'boys, but they do have a reasonably-sized panoply of what they call stews: a meat and a vegan jambalaya, various etouffees, etc. You can get half-and-half servings, which enabled me to try both the shrimp and corn etouffee, which was mostly corn with a few shrimp, and the crawfish and andouille maque choux, which had more of the titular ingredients (they seem to have changed the menu the next day to take the andouille out, which was not a good idea) and was otherwise pretty much the same thing with a lot of corn in it. I like corn, and the spicing on both dishes was good, but this was more OK than great. The dishes come with rice, and I did like that the half-and-half was separated by a little wall of rice down the middle, and that was the rice: not too much of it. Counter service, and the food comes up instantly: they must keep all the stews on the simmer. read more

We recently drove all the way to Capitola just for lunch to try Roux Dat based on a recommendation. We were definitely not disappointed! We are well traveled and the food here is amazing, much better than anything we've had in the South, even in New Orleans itself. I had the shrimp and corn etouffee and my husband had the fennel and portabella mushroom jambalaya (which happens to be vegan, even though my husband is not). My point is that even a carnivore will enjoy the vegan and vegetarian offerings here. For dessert we had the beignets, which were very good. I am writing this review while my husband is driving us back to Roux Dat because we both kept thinking about it being so good! Most definitely worth the drive. This time I think we will each take an order to go in addition to our dine-in order so we can enjoy their fantastic food again tomorrow. read more

We came here to eat on a whim because the Boardwalk was so packed. My husband and I ordered the shrimp po boy with a side of Cajun fries, fried oyster po boy with a side of jambalaya and rice and beignets. The shrimp po boy and fries were pretty good. The po boy had a good amount of shrimp and the fries were crispy. I was pretty disappointed with the fried oyster po boy because the oyster didn't taste fresh. I've had fried oyster po boys before and it didn't have that stinky fishy-ness. The jambalaya was decisions though. It had great flavor and good amount of chicken, sausage and seafood. If you like authentic NOLA cuisine then you will not be disappointed, and I am not really giving a compliment here. I have family in NOLA and have spent a lot of time there. The food is pretty bad and unhealthy but that is what people want essentially. I am surprised that folks on the Central Coast would go for it, because it is so unhealthy and quite frankly gross. I am vegan and tried the vegan options, LAME. Don't bother. There are some amazing vegan restaurants in NOLA that do the traditional cuisine so very well, this is not one of them. read more

What a gem inside the shopping center behind the Capitola Mall. Always on the lookout for good Southern food (rare in the Santa Cruz area), we decided to try this southern Creole place. We got there right when it opened (11:00), and each of us grabbed the lunch special, which was $10.95 and included any Po Boy sandwich with either Cajun fries or a small stew and a drink. I opted for the fried chicken Po boy, which came with fried chicken, spicy mayo, coleslaw, pickles, and tomato, with a side of Cajun fries. My wife tried the roast beef po boy with a side of red beans and rice stew, and we also ordered a side of fried pickles. Not only was this food amazing, it was served quick, fresh, and the counter order staff was helpful and brought it out to us in about 10 minutes. Both sandwiches were awesome. The fried chicken was light and airy (not true southern style, more Cajun) and the fries were seasoned with just the right amount of spice. The veggies were fresh and had a good crunch, and complimented the chicken very well. The beef sandwich was more like chopped beef with a tangy gravy sauce and spicy mayo, and the stew was awesome and tasted homemade. The fried pickles were perfectly done, and came with a mustard sauce (think Popeyes Mardi Gras mustard, but better), which went perfectly. Came with a ton of pickles for $3.50! They have lemonade and tea fresh everyday, and the tea (which is unsweetened, but they have sugar water to sweeten it which makes the blending simple) was great and went perfectly with the meal. Bottom line - great Creole/southern food at a great price, and wide selection of New Orleans staples on the menu. They also have a smaller shack serving their food downtown on Pacific Ave in downtown Santa Cruz, so you have two options to get a meal from them! read more

If we could give 10 Stars we would for me and my family's whole experience at Roux Dat. The Food was Delicious, the Service and Hospitality was the Best! The guys were all Nice and very helpful. The Fried shrimp PoBoy sandwich was simply amazing. The shrimp was well seasoned and crunchy, and the sauce was perfectly complementary. The only thing I would change about the sandwich is adding more of the sauce. The environment was very relaxing, plenty of parking and enough tables to dine at without issue. Stopped in a couple months ago and forgot to review, but this place deserves it. Absolutely delicious food, and we loved that you could split a bowl so could try a couple stews between the two of us. The slaw was different than any other I've tasted, in a delicious way. Also the Bloody Mary was delicious as it comes and made even better by the various hot sauce options they have. I ordered a ~$10 Chicken and Sausage Gumbo that consisted of chicken, smoked sausage, and okra simmered in tomatoes, onions, celery, bell peppers, garlic, and a touch of file powder. It also came with a side of white or brown rice and too small pieces of garlic bread. The overall meal was very wholesome and filling, and the gumbo was a little on the hearty side which I enjoyed. We love spicy food and couldn't wait to try this place. It's cute Inside with mardi gras decorations all around. We both ordered their half and half with no rice just stews. We tried 4 different stews and they were all really good. We had jambalaya, crawfish maque choux, corn and shrimp etouffee and red beans and sausage. All of them on the mild (for us) spicy side. All delicious in their own way. We really liked the bread that came with each bowl. We had the beignets for dessert. Hot, fresh dough squares lightly dusted with powered sugar. The rum sauce that came with them was a great addition. I really appreciate that you can get them anytime and not just in the morning. They staff are very friendly and helpful. It also comes with Cajun fries that were well seasoned and crunchy. Ask them for the dipping sauce for the fries. Not sure what it was but it pair nicely. The stew plate was fantastic as well. Decided to stop by on the way back from Capitola Beach. I expected a homey beach cottage restaurant but it is in a strip mall. Withhold judgement until you taste the food. They mixed some maque choux into a crawfish etouffee. Crawfish of course had to be frozen because of location and season, but it didn't effect the dish because the sauce was perfect. They have California-zed a few of the dishes, you can find some creative vegan/vegetarian combos and gumbo. Beignets, excellent. My only suggestion to change is the drinks, the lemonade was just powdered overly sweet mix. A fresh mint lemonade would really cut the richness of the sauces nicely. read more

Definitely a great creole/Cajun spot. We ordered the hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, jambalaya, sweet corn and shrimp étouffée, and beignets. We didn't have to season anything. Hush puppies were good but once you've had one hush puppy you've had them all. Fried green tomatoes were also good. My husbands jambalaya and my étouffée were very tasty and I would definitely order that again. The only thing with my entree is it was cold when I got it which was a bummer so I had them zap it. They definitely make the entrees before hand and heat them up, which makes sense. The beignets were a let down. I was so happy they had them and I couldn't wait but once again, once you've had cafe du monde in New Orleans it screws up any other beignet experience bc nothing compares. I'd skip these. Plus they served them with rum sauce ... gross. They do not have a bathroom, you have to walk half way down the plaza to it. They only sell New Orleans beer and there is limited seating. It was clean but could be cleaner and lemonade and water could've been refilled and stations cleaned up. Great local spot if you want some creole comfort food! read more

We had dinner at Roux Dat recently. Enjoyed their new expanded space, not so crowded as their last. Everything we tried from the fried catfish, sweet potato fries, to the coleslaw were excellent. To finish the meal we had their fantastic beignets, fried dough w powdered sugar for those who do not know. So delicious. Capitola was having their Monte Foundation Fireworks show that night, awesome that we could watch the show from outside the restaurant. A perfect evening. This review is specifically for the young man working the register this weekend! Sterling was amazing and gave us great suggestions for our food (because everything sounded delicious)! Not only was he super helpful with our meal, he was exceptional when things took a turn for the worst and I suddenly got very sick while ordering. It was a scary situation but he was very calm and helped ensure that my boyfriend and I had space for me to recover safely. AND with all of the craziness, he still managed to get our order right! Thank you for the incredible service, all the way around! We ordered the Pulled Pork Po Boy, Jambalaya, Cajun Fries, and Beignets!
