Fried Catfish Po' Boy.. best sandwich and fries I've ever had ever. Highly recommend!!

What a gem inside the shopping center behind the Capitola Mall. Always on the lookout for good Southern food (rare in the Santa Cruz area), we decided to try this southern Creole place. We got there right when it opened (11:00), and each of us grabbed the lunch special, which was $10.95 and included any Po Boy sandwich with either Cajun fries or a small stew and a drink. I opted for the fried chicken Po boy, which came with fried chicken, spicy mayo, coleslaw, pickles, and tomato, with a side of Cajun fries. My wife tried the roast beef po boy with a side of red beans and rice stew, and we also ordered a side of fried pickles. Not only was this food amazing, it was served quick, fresh, and the counter order staff was helpful and brought it out to us in about 10 minutes. Both sandwiches were awesome. The fried chicken was light and airy (not true southern style, more Cajun) and the fries were seasoned with just the right amount of spice. The veggies were fresh and had a good crunch, and complimented the chicken very well. The beef sandwich was more like chopped beef with a tangy gravy sauce and spicy mayo, and the stew was awesome and tasted homemade. The fried pickles were perfectly done, and came with a mustard sauce (think Popeyes Mardi Gras mustard, but better), which went perfectly. Came with a ton of pickles for $3.50! They have lemonade and tea fresh everyday, and the tea (which is unsweetened, but they have sugar water to sweeten it which makes the blending simple) was great and went perfectly with the meal. Bottom line - great Creole/southern food at a great price, and wide selection of New Orleans staples on the menu. They also have a smaller shack serving their food downtown on Pacific Ave in downtown Santa Cruz, so you have two options to get a meal from them! read more

This place really hits the spot! We took a day trip to Capitola and I was looking up spots to eat at and this place stood out! I'm from SF and we don't have many Creale/Cajun food so I was excited to give it a try. It was very delicious and flavorful! We ordered the Catfish Po'boy with a side of Chicken Okra Gumbo, Crawfish Stew, and Beignets. It was so amazing, I highly recommend eating here read more

Love the food! Best jambalaya level ever had. My husband goes for their the shrimp sandwiches.

Me and my little family and grand baby are on a mini vacation and found this restaurant. My husband is from Louisiana and we wanted to support this local southern restaurant . If we could give 10 Stars we would for me and my family's whole experience at Roux Dat. The Food was Delicious, the Service and Hospitality was the Best! The guys were all Nice and very helpful. Everything we ordered was Delicious from the chicken and sausage jambalaya, red beans and rice with the catfish and coleslaw, the shrimp and even the fried seasoned pickles with a dipping sauce that came with it was Soooo Good! We will be back on out next trip for sure. read more

Came in for a late lunch and left satisfied. Kids both had chicken tender meals which came with 3 pieces and one side (fries). I had the shrimp po' boy and chose the jambalaya as my side dish. Hubby got a large bowl of jambalaya. The shrimp po' boy had a good amount of shrimp and the jambalaya was filled with chicken, sausage and shrimp. We left room for beignets but were disappointed that they weren't the soft pillowy pieces of fried dough we were expecting. All but one of them were completely hollow inside. I was so close to putting in two orders. So glad I didn't. Everything else was great so I won't fault them for their beignets. The place itself could've used a bit of tidying up. Most tables weren't wiped down. read more

We recently drove all the way to Capitola just for lunch to try Roux Dat based on a recommendation. We were definitely not disappointed! We are well traveled and the food here is amazing, much better than anything we've had in the South, even in New Orleans itself. I had the shrimp and corn etouffee and my husband had the fennel and portabella mushroom jambalaya (which happens to be vegan, even though my husband is not). My point is that even a carnivore will enjoy the vegan and vegetarian offerings here. For dessert we had the beignets, which were very good. I am writing this review while my husband is driving us back to Roux Dat because we both kept thinking about it being so good! Most definitely worth the drive. This time I think we will each take an order to go in addition to our dine-in order so we can enjoy their fantastic food again tomorrow. read more

Ordered the fried oyster and catfish po boy sandwiches and it came with a side of stew-it was all delicious and better than i expected! To finish off-was an order of bineget it was ok not as delicious as cafe du monde-brought back fond memories read more

The Fried shrimp PoBoy sandwich was simply amazing. The shrimp was well seasoned and crunchy, and the sauce was perfectly complementary. The only thing I would change about the sandwich is adding more of the sauce. The environment was very relaxing, plenty of parking and enough tables to dine at without issue. Overall an amazing place to eat lunch at after a day at the beach. read more

Hushpuppies are amazing! Jalapeño cornbread is also good. Enjoyed the chicken, shrimp andoiulle jambalaya. Fries are okay. I did not like their catfish or coleslaw. read more

Stopped in a couple months ago and forgot to review, but this place deserves it. Absolutely delicious food, and we loved that you could split a bowl so could try a couple stews between the two of us. The slaw was different than any other I've tasted, in a delicious way. Also the Bloody Mary was delicious as it comes and made even better by the various hot sauce options they have. Can't beat a good Bloody Mary for $5.75. Honestly an entirely good experience and I'm looking forward to going back read more

Shrimp po boy, onion rings, fried green tomatoes, fries! Incredible food and friendly staff! So glad we stopped!

We came here hungry and left satisfied after having delicious and affordable Creole food! I ordered a ~$10 Chicken and Sausage Gumbo that consisted of chicken, smoked sausage, and okra simmered in tomatoes, onions, celery, bell peppers, garlic, and a touch of file powder. It also came with a side of white or brown rice and too small pieces of garlic bread. The overall meal was very wholesome and filling, and the gumbo was a little on the hearty side which I enjoyed. I wouldn't mind coming back here again. Roux Dat Cajun Creole is a very simple, clean, and affordable place to get your Cajun and Creole fix. read more

This restaurant is in a plaza. It looks like they are renovating their original larger location in the plaza. The spot is pretty inconspicuous. Plenty of parking in front. Small little restaurant. Pretty laid back and casual. You order at the counter, they give you a number, you find a seat and they'll bring you your food. The menu options are amazing. The service was pretty good and the food was delicious. I'll be coming back for sure! read more

Ordered shrimp/corn étouffée and shrimp po boy and loved the flavors. But the étouffée had cocktail shrimp, but po boy had bigger shrimp. Étouffée recipe does not use cocktail shrimp. Great flavor, put in some real shrimp. I will try again tho. read more

We love spicy food and couldn't wait to try this place. It's cute Inside with mardi gras decorations all around. We both ordered their half and half with no rice just stews. We tried 4 different stews and they were all really good. We had jambalaya, crawfish maque choux, corn and shrimp etouffee and red beans and sausage. All of them on the mild (for us) spicy side. All delicious in their own way. We really liked the bread that came with each bowl. We had the beignets for dessert. Hot, fresh dough squares lightly dusted with powered sugar. The rum sauce that came with them was a great addition. I really appreciate that you can get them anytime and not just in the morning. They staff are very friendly and helpful. We'll definitely come back to try other items on the menu. read more

Always great food, many items to choose from. Favorites are jambalaya and chicken mushroom stew. Beignets are also very good. If you like NOLA food, come here. read more

We had jambalaya, gumbo, and crawfish maque choux. Gumbo and jambalaya were amazing with BIG servings and rice to go with. Maque choux was also good, but needed a lot more crawfish as it was hard to find in the stew. No complaints. Will come back! read more

Even my picky kids (5 and 2.5) loved the fried chicken strips and hush puppies. My jambalaya with brown rice was delicious. My wife loved her chicken, okra and sausage gumbo. It's clear why this place has so many great ratings and reviews. We will be back! read more

Delicious Cajun food at a reasonable price. What more can you ask for?! We got the oyster poboy and did a half and half stew plate. For the stews, we chose the jambalaya and the shrimp and corn etouffee. Then oyster poboy was awesome! They give a generous amount of oyster so that you get some with each bite. It also comes with Cajun fries that were well seasoned and crunchy. Ask them for the dipping sauce for the fries. Not sure what it was but it pair nicely. The stew plate was fantastic as well. It came with two slices of garlic bread and your choice of white or brown rice. I personally liked the jambalaya better. It had more flavor than the shrimp and corn etouffee. read more

Decided to stop by on the way back from Capitola Beach. I expected a homey beach cottage restaurant but it is in a strip mall. Withhold judgement until you taste the food. They mixed some maque choux into a crawfish etouffee. Crawfish of course had to be frozen because of location and season, but it didn't effect the dish because the sauce was perfect. They have California-zed a few of the dishes, you can find some creative vegan/vegetarian combos and gumbo. Beignets, excellent. My only suggestion to change is the drinks, the lemonade was just powdered overly sweet mix. A fresh mint lemonade would really cut the richness of the sauces nicely. read more

Definitely a great creole/Cajun spot. We ordered the hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, jambalaya, sweet corn and shrimp étouffée, and beignets. We didn't have to season anything. Hush puppies were good but once you've had one hush puppy you've had them all. Fried green tomatoes were also good. My husbands jambalaya and my étouffée were very tasty and I would definitely order that again. The only thing with my entree is it was cold when I got it which was a bummer so I had them zap it. They definitely make the entrees before hand and heat them up, which makes sense. The beignets were a let down. I was so happy they had them and I couldn't wait but once again, once you've had cafe du monde in New Orleans it screws up any other beignet experience bc nothing compares. I'd skip these. Plus they served them with rum sauce ... gross. They do not have a bathroom, you have to walk half way down the plaza to it. They only sell New Orleans beer and there is limited seating. It was clean but could be cleaner and lemonade and water could've been refilled and stations cleaned up. Great local spot if you want some creole comfort food! read more

We had dinner at Roux Dat recently. Enjoyed their new expanded space, not so crowded as their last. Everything we tried from the fried catfish, sweet potato fries, to the coleslaw were excellent. To finish the meal we had their fantastic beignets, fried dough w powdered sugar for those who do not know. So delicious. Capitola was having their Monte Foundation Fireworks show that night, awesome that we could watch the show from outside the restaurant. A perfect evening. I highly recommend Roux Dat in Capitola for Cajun cuisine. read more

This review is specifically for the young man working the register this weekend! Sterling was amazing and gave us great suggestions for our food (because everything sounded delicious)! Not only was he super helpful with our meal, he was exceptional when things took a turn for the worst and I suddenly got very sick while ordering. It was a scary situation but he was very calm and helped ensure that my boyfriend and I had space for me to recover safely. AND with all of the craziness, he still managed to get our order right! Thank you for the incredible service, all the way around! We ordered the Pulled Pork Po Boy, Jambalaya, Cajun Fries, and Beignets! My only regret is that we had to take it to go and therefore, we couldn't order more food afterwards! We are looking forward to coming back next time we are in the area! Thank you to the wonderful staff, especially Sterling! read more

I love this place and don't come often enough. The gents in this store are always friendly and super helpful with the menu. There are lots of places to eat inside and a few spots outside. The Po Boys are tasty and they have solved the issue of what if I want to try two items? Today it was the chili crawfish and the vegan (mushrooms and fennel) with white rice (you have the choice of brown or white). I can never make it to dessert which is a travesty because those beignets and coffee call me. Every time I go someone always orders them and I think to myself I will save room--- but nope.. I would rather eat my whole entree. read more
