Routes may be an offsite airport rental but it is worth the time and effort. The vehicles are well maintained and the price is competitive and always less than their competitors. The staff is professional, honest and kind. I never feel like I am going to be charged for something unexpected or held responsible for something unwarranted. Brutal customer service. Lost my wallet on the plane so had to switch the reservation to my girlfriend's name while I panicked around back at the airport. The agent told her she had to get the extra insurance as her credit card didn't have that perk. Still not sure how he knew that just from looking at her card. Luckily I retrieved my wallet from the airport and came back to the counter to switch it back because my credit card does cover the insurance (so did hers but she didn't know). The agent told me he couldn't change the reservation without cancelling so we are now stuck with a $160 bill for insurance that wasn't needed out of duress. We had a bit of a mixed experience with this car rental spot. The whole system was a bit clunky and confusing, from the instructions getting to the car rental place, to not picking up the phone, to the strange manual paperwork process. It also felt a bit like we were being nickel-and-dimed the whole time, with the various hidden charges. The car itself was unfortunately poorly maintained, and given to us with a half tank of gas and no washer fluid, and felt very worn. I would definitely not use this company ever based on my recent experience. I paid in full ahead of time through Expedia for our five-day rental. Our flight was delayed so I contacted Routes to let them know that we would be picking the car up a day late and they said that was fine, but they couldn't guarantee what car we would get which was fine with us. We arrived the following day and were told that the car we would get would now cost us an additional $150 for the four remaining days. This was not mentioned the day before and made no sense. Having to drive to Canmore for a meeting that afternoon we had no choice but to take the vehicle. I find this completely unacceptable and bordering on criminal. If we had arrived at the original time, they would have provided us with a car. If they had just left that same car in their lot for the day we weren't there, you would have still made the same amount and we would have received that car at the agreed upon price. Instead, they must have rented that car out (as it wasn't there when we arrived the following day). So, they got our original money, an additional day's rent from someone else on the car we rented, plus the $150 they chose to charge when they knew we had no other options for a rental. To say this is unacceptable is putting it mildly. And based on other reviews this doesn't appear to be a one-off situation. Save yourself a bad experience and rent with another company. I will never use this company again and will actively disparage them to anyone looking to rent a vehicle. read more

They ask you to show them the insurance document and if you don't have it, then you have to pay them for the insurance which is $30/day, and the deductible is $3,500 which you don't get back if it is your fault. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE - I have never left a negative review before, but we had a terrible experience with Routes Car Rental at YYC. The shuttle took a very long time to arrive, the counter staff were rude, and the policies were designed to trap customers into paying far more than advertised. They do not tell you upfront that you must bring your personal auto insurance policy number with you. If you don't have it, they force you to buy their extremely expensive insurance, and several other customers were arguing about this at the counter--so it's clearly a common issue. On top of that, our final bill was full of hidden fees (additional driver, concession fee, licensing fee, recovery fee, GST, etc.), which were not told to us up front and more than doubled the cost we were quoted and booked online for. We also saw these same issues happen to others in our travel group who rented from the same company. The worst part: at drop off they acted like everything was fine, said "you're all set," and never mentioned any extra charges. Only after driving to the airport and getting on our flight several hours later did we receive an emailed invoice with all the added fees--no chance to question or dispute anything. It felt like a trap. They lure you in with low prices, then bury you in upsells and surprise charges. In the end, you pay more than a reputable name brand rental company, with far worse service. Totally misrepresented the fees online. Despite paying extra for "Full Coverage" insurance online we were charged an extra $25 per day (discounted from $30). Furthermore an out of provinces change of $10.99 plus taxes per day was added at the desk. This was not mentioned anywhere else in the booking process. They advertise as the most cost-effective rental car option at Calgary airport however the ordeal starts after you land there and stand in the queue for picking up your car at their pick-up location. 1) Customer Service: All customers, including us, seem to be confused and ran out of patience due to infinitely long wait times at their front desk. 2) Lack of professionalism during car delivery - Pre-delivery inspection was done in haste raising lot of red flags and warning signs. We pointed out several preexisting scratches on the windshield and on the car body before these were included in the pre-delivery inspection report. 3) Real-ordeal during car return: During car return, we had mentioned about the minor scratch on the right side of the front bumper which happened during an incident where the car hits a fence, rather say touches at speed less than 5 mph (please refer the attached image for your own conclusion) in a parking structure. However, we were forced to sign a document with extra security hold of $1500. This is in addition to the $500 security hold during car pick-up stage at the front-desk. There was no mention or reference of pre-delivery inspection report either. Even after repeated follow-ups, they responded with the actual invoice after more than a month with $1000 charges for repair. We were fine with the actual cost of repair, though 7 hours of labor and parts for a minor scratch seem unreasonable, but they charged us extra fees for 3 days of non-operation of the vehicle which again looks extremely superficial. In short, if you care about your mental peace while renting a car then please consider other options. Avoid Routes Car Rental - Hidden Fees, Forced Charges, and Bait-and-Switch Vehicle We rented from Routes Car Rental at Calgary Airport in July 2025, and it was by far the most frustrating and misleading rental experience we've ever had. I would strongly caution anyone considering this company. 1. Delayed Pickup & Not Given the Vehicle We Reserved We booked an SUV well in advance, expecting a smooth process upon arrival. Instead, after landing, we waited over 40 minutes for the shuttle to take us to their off-site location. By the time we arrived, the office was about to close. Despite our reservation, we were given a vehicle we did not reserve. We reserved an "Intermediate SUV" with a photo of a Nissan Rogue and were provided with a Nissan Kicks - a subcompact SUV and not considered intermediate by car standards. We did not realize how small the car was until going out to it (no inspection by the staff, just for us to inspect,) and at that point they were leaving. Mind you, when we were picked up, they could only fit 3 of the 5 families waiting for a shuttle. So, I have no idea what happened to the other two families left waiting as the staff said multiple times they were "closed" at 8:05pm and either we had to take our rental or find a new option. 2. Forced Insurance Purchase Even worse, we were forced to purchase additional insurance, despite showing proof that our USAA credit card included full rental coverage. The staff refused to accept the information provided as it was not what was their standard and told us that unless we paid for their insurance, they would not release the car. Again, with no refund or option to sort it out the next day. We had no choice but to pay, or we'd be left stranded with our two young children. The rental agreement clearly allows renters to decline insurance with proof of coverage, but they ignored their own terms and would not budge. 3. Surprise "Out-of-Province" Fee Later, we were also charged an out-of-province fee after casually mentioning that we'd be visiting Banff and Yoho National Parks. Yoho happens to be across the provincial border in British Columbia, and apparently telling them before travel at pick up was not "prior notification." 4: Not so unlimited Mileage The policy online states "Unlimited mileage is offered only within the state/province where the vehicle will be rented." however on our signed agreement we noticed that it was capped at 200km per day. We did receive a "out-of-province" charge but even when getting the vehicle it did not align with what was mentioned. You cannot have unlimited "in province" but also still put a cap for the same amount out of province on the rental agreement. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Neither of these charges -- the forced insurance nor the out-of-province fee -- were included in the signed contract or in our email confirmation when we reserved the car. Routes relies on website fine print, small signs on the walls and verbal pressure, but none of this was legally or clearly presented to us when we signed. It felt deceptive and borderline predatory. We have already submitted a dispute with our credit card company and are pursuing a refund. I've worked in Credit Card fraud previously and even when speaking to prior colleagues and our bank, they all feel this is predatory and slimy at least and fraud at best. A contract MUST be clear to hold up with banking fraud and theirs does not disclosure these charges. I would never rent from Routes again, and I'd strongly recommend others stay far away. Poor communication, hidden fees, and no accountability. If you value transparency and reliability, this is not the company for you. read more

This was our first time renting a car from Routes Car Rental and it will also be our last. We weren't able to get a car rental from our usual trusted company given that it's peak season and during Canada Day long weekend. At first, the pricing seems very appealing, cheaper than most places, but as with everything else, you get what you pay for. We took the shuttle from the airport to their office to pick up the rental, which was smooth and had no issues. They seem to be very old fashioned and the system is slow. The pickup process was very slow. We waited for more than an hour to get our car. They took pictures of all the scratches and condition of the car before handing the key over. The whole process was very inefficient. When we return the car, it was a different person checking us out and questioned all the scratches that the first person already noted. Customer service was nonexistent because it felt like we're being questioned like we've damaged their car or something. It was horrible. Lastly, we were charged for crossing the border without prior notice. I reached out to customer service to explain that we inadvertently missed an exit on the highway and was forced to cross the border as there was no other point for us to turn back. We had to drive an additional 5-6 miles before we could make a U-turn. They didn't care and insisted that the charge was valid because we didn't give them prior notice. Umm...ok, that makes a lot of sense. Next time, I'll give you prior notice that I will miss an exit while driving. I will never rent from this place again. Great service from the pickup shuttle, but once we walked into the office, things changed. Surprise surprise, we don't have the jeep you rented even though you confirmed it 3 days ago. How about a Nissan rogue. Ask for a half tank of gas for compensation, "no sorry, how about an extra 50km per day". We ended up with a ford edge, the Vehicle was in decent shape but has stains on the seats. Couldn't get CarPlay to work, and both usb ports in the front do not work. Hoping we don't have any vehicle return issues like others have mentioned, being charged for damages or cleaning fees. Would have just rented at the airport in hindsight. Wish we read the reviews before renting here. When you see 5 five stars and then a bunch of 1 star you have to wonder about a place. Normal average reviews sit at 3.5, with some 3s and 4s. I want to share our experience to help others make an informed decision. The low reviews are accurate and we experienced what everyone has written about. There are hidden fees and the way they write their language is extremely confusing. Realize that they will charge you when you go outside of Province but if you're NOT from Canada you won't know what that means. The person who is renting the car to you also won't disclose what this means either. We told them all the places that we will be going to and they stayed silent. As in we disclosed the locations of our trip, and the person working there should have said you are going out of province and marked it as such. Instead, the person helping us said nothing. The signs on the wall say they will charge 30$/day when you go outside of province, it does not say that it would charge you for the entire trip even on days when you aren't out of Province. Meaning if you go just one day out they will charge you for the entire week not just for the day. This is not reflected in the language written on the wall. And the staffing also does not help you understand what is out of Province. There is no map to help guide you in making these decisions. When you bring this up to them at the time of returning the vehicle they will not let you speak with the manager and they will argue with you when you show them all the reviews from people who have had a similar experiences. There are other reviews on here about them charging people for the windshield cracks. We were lucky that we took pictures of the vehicle and videos. I recommend you video the car with the person signing out the car to you. I have read other reviewers getting charged a hefty fee for "new cracks" when in reality, they will hand you a car with cracks on the windshield present. We were lucky to only incur the out of Province fee and nothing additional. I was horrified when I saw the other reviews for this company. Other considerations - you have to get shuttled to this dealer. We waited approximately 30minutes or more. The lines are long. People were cutting and others were getting upset. Out of Alberta Province fee of $10.99 per day, paid in advance and tracked by GPS. The penalty fee for No Notification is $20.95 per day for all days of the rental. Out of Alberta your mileage is limited. You need to buy windshield chip insurance costing $14.99 per day. Car windshields frequently get chipped by rocks in the winter, and repairs are costly. They don't fix the windshields after charging for damage. You must document and take photos of all damage and glass chips before you drive. Due to explaining the complicated fees, rentals take time and the wait in the line grows long. Even with all the fees, the rental was cheaper than any other agency. read more

Dear Sirs, If you want a safe vehicle don't rent here. On March 21, 2026 I rented a Nissan Rogue vehicle from Routes Car Rental, 588 Aero Dr NE, Calgary, AB T2E 7Y4. After driving this vehicle to Canmore, AB on March 22nd it was discovered that the car had a completely bald front tire. It was also noted that the other front tire appeared to be very worn and missing tread as well. After much discussion with my passengers, we decided that due to the winter driving conditions, it was unsafe to continue driving the car. We had not been given any emergency contact numbers for Routes so we immediately called their office number (844-398-3930) repeatedly and never got an answer. I left messages that were never returned. I also emailed their corporate office. Corporate sent an automated reply saying they would get back within 48 hours. Calls and emails were repeated for 3 days with no response. My group decided that because Routes wasn't responding, it was in our best interest and safety to rent another vehicle. The Nissan Rogue was parked on March 22 and we did not drive it any further. I did manage to contact customer service at Routes Corporate office in Toronto on Tuesday, March 24. They confirmed that they had a copy of the email with the tire picture. I requested that they either retrieve and replace this vehicle or pay to tow it to a tire store and replace the tires. They declined. They stated that they would not help us, that we should call a roadside repair service and get help at our own expense. They offered no solution as to how the car could be safely returned to their office but they expected us to do that. If the car as not returned, I was cautioned that it would be considered stolen. I called their roadside service. Roadside stated that they could not provide a replacement tire and only offered to install the small emergency spare tire. They cautioned that the emergency spare might not make it back to Calgary. They cautioned about driving a vehicle with different size tires for an extended period. Knowing that the car would have to be returned I took the vehicle to OK Tire in Calgary. They inspected the tires noting that 1 tire had zero tread depth, 1 tire had 1mm tread depth, and the other 2 had between 3-4mm tread depth. They stated that all tires were below the legal limit and all the tires should be replaced. They could not legally replace just one tire on an AWD vehicle. They agreed it was unsafe to drive. I am now in an untenable position. Drive an unsafe car, pay massive out-of-pocket amounts to put Routes car back in serviceable condition, abandon the car and be held liable for thief, or risk my life to return it? Paragraph 3 of the rental agreement states that: "The Vehicle is delivered to you in good operating condition." Since this was not the case, Routes is in breach of their own contract. At the time of delivery, they: 1) Failed to perform any kind of safety/damage walk-around inspection with us, 2) they failed to provide any paperwork (including the basic contract), 3) they provided no emergency instructions or phone numbers. Subsequently, they failed to answer any attempted correspondence for 3 days. The unsafe condition of the vehicle prevented us from using the vehicle as intended resulting in a loss of use for my party. This is the worst car rental experience I have ever had...I was given an UNSAFE vehicle, and received no customer support for 5 days, and I was forced to take my life and my passengers lives into my own hands driving an UNSAFE vehicle on ice covered roads back to Calgary on March 26. Second time using Routes and will be my last. Would not recommend to anyone. First experience was in Toronto. Honestly first impression was good. Staff was friendly, car was quite new and clean. However, they were very fussy about insurance if one declines their in-house insurance. I always decline and use my own auto insurance however I was asked to provide proof. That has never happened to me with the other 'big' car rental companies. Obviously I don't have my policy papers with me so I used my CC insurance instead which took him 5 minutes to check on his computer to see if it qualifies or not. The next day my car had a check engine light on so went back to switch another car so not really their fault. Decided to give Routes a second chance in Calgary this time and it was a big mistake. Huge lineup out the door in the rain. Everyone who works there were East Indian. They were rude, lack professionalism, lack experience and difficult to understand their accent. Took over 30min to get my car. Signed a bunch of papers for declining their insurance. Again took several minutes to check my CC's insurance. Car was quite new and clean so no issues there. I always have a habit of taking pictures when I receive the car. The problem starts when I returned the car. They charged me for the fuel even after I refueled it to the same level I got the car. I have pictures to prove it but they don't acknowledge that and still charged me $25 for 1/8 of a tank. They charged me for a pre-existing windshield chip and crack. Two agents both said it was an old damage and I won't be responsible for it. 2 days later I got an email they charged my CC almost $800 for the damage that I was not responsible for. I've made numerous phone calls and emails to 3 different email addresses and they all just give me the run-around. The manager Vivek has made no attempt to get back to me. Very frustrating. My impression of this company is that once they have an opportunity to charge you whether it's legitimate or not, they will charge you at an unreasonable amount with very little recourse. Once they have your money they will ignore you. That's how they can set their prices much lower than the other 'big' car rental competitors. This was my first and last booking with this company. I made the reservation through Expedia and, due to a delayed flight, arrived at Calgary Airport after the rental office had closed. I immediately contacted their main office to inform them of the delay and also notified Expedia so they could pass the message to Routes that I would pick up the vehicle the following day. To my surprise, the next day I was informed that my contract had expired, despite the fact that I had paid the full amount upfront. I was told my only option was to pay an additional $750, otherwise I would not receive a vehicle. Traveling with family, I had no choice but to proceed with the payment. When I raised this issue with Expedia, Routes falsely claimed that I had opted for an upgrade and insisted they never received notification regarding my delayed arrival. This explanation is inconsistent, as if my contract had truly expired, I should not have been charged the full prepaid amount plus an additional $750. Furthermore, if the rental had already been paid for in advance, the timing of pickup should not have invalidated my right to the reserved vehicle. This experience appears to reflect unfair practices designed to take advantage of customers. A visit to their location reveals multiple signs discouraging complaints, which further raises concerns about their business conduct. read more

Vehicle: We rented a 2024 Dodge Durango SRT Hemi for about a week. It seats 8 people (has a 3rd row) and still had some room for luggage. The vehicle was super clean and was so fun to drive! If you have a family of 8 or less, rent this vehicle! We were not disappointed with this vehicle in anyway. It was so comfortable for all 7 of us family members, and this vehicle had some -get-up-and-go! The features including the infotainment center were 2024. What can you say? Very high tech! It has a humongous touch screen, Qi charger (wireless charger for cell phone), and at least 4 USB, 2 USB-C, and 1 3-prong outlets in the vehicle. One large moon roof and medium-dark tin all around (not the windshield. It got reasonable gas mileage too. Customer service: Their rental facility is located about 8 minutes off-site of the airport. They have a free shuttle service that comes every 15-20mins (back and forth) to the airport and rental facility, seating a maximum of 10 passengers and their luggages. You will need to ask the customer service at the airport exactly where the pickup location is for Routes Rental customers. It is located outside just near the rental car desks next to the pick-ups for the buses. Customer service is fast at the store. The shuttle did take some extra time on our arrival date to pick us up (we waited about 40mins), but it was only a few mins wait the day we returned our rental. Pricing: this was the lowest price on the entire market. We paid about $50/day. Make sure you verify if your auto insurance covers the rental otherwise you can get their insurance which costs about $200/week. Bring the vehicle back with the same amount of gas you received it; otherwise they will charge you an arm and one child for the gas. read more

Worst car rental experience ever! 1. At the time of booking, there was no mention that the "unlimited distance" only applies within the province. You only find this out when you show up to pick up the car. 2. If you drive outside the province, you're suddenly limited to 200 km per day--completely unrealistic for longer trips. We had many days where 200 km wasn't nearly enough. 3. They don't allow free cancellation once you discover these hidden restrictions. 4. Their customer service is terrible--you can only reach them by email, and most of the time they ignore you unless you follow up again and again. When they finally respond, the replies are rude, dismissive, and show no appreciation for your business. They clearly don't care if you ever rent from them again. 5. I booked through Booking.com for 8 days, with a pick-up time at 8am. I assumed I could return the car on the evening of the 7th day (since my hotel shuttle could take me to the airport), so I just entered 6pm as the return time. When I actually picked up the car, it was 1.5 hours late, and I asked to return it around 9pm on the 7th day--still within the 8-day rental period. They refused, forcing me to return earlier. 6. It poured during our wait, the line was out the door, our luggage sat in the rain and is soaking wet. People were crammed in the entryway trying to stay dry. WARNING: Avoid This Rental Location Do not rent from this location. They issue false charges after return and promise refunds that are never delivered. The documentation process at pickup and return is flawed, and the manager is dishonest. If you must rent here, protect yourself by photographing the odometer, fuel level, and vehicle condition, and keep all receipts. Here's what happened to us: - We rented a car from Calgary Airport to Banff Village for the weekend. The car was provided with less than a full tank (staff noted it). - We documented the gas level and odometer with photos at both pickup and return. - Despite this, we were charged an extra $550 USD for going over mileage and fuel. - After sending proof, Routes acknowledged the error, sent me a refund form, and repeatedly told me the refund would appear in 3-5 business days. That was 6 weeks ago. Weekly calls and emails all end with the same false assurances. Attempts to reach the manager result in being placed on hold indefinitely. Since I'm based in the U.S., I cannot resolve this in person, and Routes has even contradicted itself in communications with Visa, blocking a credit card dispute. I've now had to involve a lawyer for small claims court. Bottom line: this location is unethical and untrustworthy. Save yourself the stress and rent elsewhere read more

Would rent again from Routes. Low price and fast return. Details below: Just returned a VW Taos after five days. Good vehicle. Immediate return. Immediate shuttle to the airport. No issues. Did not take the company-offered insurance for the vehicle or the windshield since our insurance broker had prepared us and provided details of our coverage when driving vehicles not owned by us. Initialling and signing the agreement is done electronically on your own cellphone. Didn't even get to checking for insurance that comes with purchases on Visa. No problems anyway. When we picked up the car, a couple of other customers appeared to have issues (a delay in returning a vehicle, and someone not having details on their own insurance). Our experience was fine. Area for improvement would be two things: 1) highlight that customers need to bring proof of their own auto insurance (not just have a credit card and a driver's licence). That is probably in the fine print; and, 2) have instructions for customers about lots of electronic initials and signing on their own phone before submitting the rental agreement form electronically. The instructions will help first-time Routes customers like me who infrequently rent cars. I was surprised by how negative some of the other reviews were on Yelp. I was concerned when I saw they were affiliated with Europcar (bad experience last year in Britain). Good experience with Routes this past week. We would rent again from Routes. We found the Routes rental deals through ca.kayak after checking discounts through work and professional memberships. The Routes prices were about half the supposed discounted prices we saw because of our professional affiliations. Great value and great car. The Taos was clean and had good room for two people with their luggage plus more space. read more
