Me and my wife went and ate with our 2 kids. So me and my wife got soup so we were sharing it with our kids. Then my wife takes a bite and she like what the heck. She pulls a screw from her mouth. Not one but 2 screws in a CUP is soup WTF. And the owner gave us 25$ off that's ridiculous everything should have been covered plus more. Do not eat here this place is terrible. Stopped here on a road trip from Chicago to Galena on a Friday following Thanksgiving and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of our food. We both ordered fish and chips. My wife ordered the cod w/crab boil; I ordered the traditional fish (cod) and chips. The breading on the cod was as light but cooked **perfectly**, and both our orders came out piping hot. We didn't try anything else, but our experience was exceptional, and the 3.7 rating this restaurant has as I type this review is completely unfair. Check this spot out if you're in the area. This was my second time trying Route 20 Bar & Grill... Today I had the HUGE Breaded Pork Tenderloin sandwich with mashed potatoes... It was served piping hot... crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside and very flavorful. Service was prompt and friendly . Typical bar & grill type place with a varied menu. The cost, per the menu, was supposed to be $7.99, but they hit me with a $6 TO GO UPCHARGE (whatever the hell that is). So, a total of $15.38 and 45 minutes later I walk out with a side salad and some chicken. Then, I have to go back in and get a fork because, even though it was TO GO, utensils are only provided when requested. Food was average, at best. Eat there several times per summer after golf in Freeport. Service is always excellent, whether we visit with a couple, a foursome or a group of 15. One waitress, in particular, is awesome... don't know her name, but we visited on a day after a local Veterans' Day celebration; full house in the middle of the afternoon, and for whatever reason, she was the only waitress -- NO ONE was left waiting for anything, as she scurried around taking care of everyone. Awesome job! Menu has a nice variety, as well as a specials board by the entrance that always provides lots of other options. Always a soup & salad bar, at an awesome price. Regular menu prices are also very reasonable, and portions generous. Have never been less than very happy with any menu choice we've made. read more

My husband and I have frequently had dinner at.Rt.20 Bar & Grill in Freeport, Illinois. We've never had a bad meal or service. Just had dinner there tonight 3/2/204. My husband had full rack of BBQ Ribs and I had the Petite Prime Rib. Both we're excellent ! Our server was Sweet, polite and our food was served quickly!. This place gets really busy but they have two large dining rooms plus seating in the bar. Highly recommend ! read more

We stopped here on the way back to Rockford for lunch. It was a Sunday around 12:30 PM so I wasn't surprised that the parking lot had a lot of cars. We walked in to a sign that said "Please wait to be seated" only to have the bar tender yell out to sit anywhere we liked. We found a table.... and waited... and waited... and waited... I'm not going to blame the waitress/bar tender, the place was busy. At least the room we were in was busy, it looks like there was another dining area, but it wasn't open when we walked in. From what I could tell there was only two servers working. The Bar Tender and a waitress, and the bar tender was doing double duty as a waitress. I'm not sure if that was bad planning on the owner/manager's part or if they just aren't used to a Sunday lunch crowd. Either way, service was lacking, but the waitress and bar tender were hustling. When ordering I had the Rueben. It was okay. The corned beef was tough and chewy but it tasted fine. If I go back, I won't get that again. My girlfriend ordered the broasted chicken. Honestly, I should have gotten the broasted chicken. It was really good. Tender, juicy, great flavor... everything you want in a chicken. Plus it was all you could eat. It came with a small cup of coleslaw that was really good. My girlfriend really enjoyed it and thought it was better than other restaurant style coleslaws she's had. Both of our meals came with french fries.... these where lacking. They weren't bad, they were okay at best. Take or leave them... they're fries. We were there for about an hour and a half, mostly due to the slow ticket times and the slow staff times. As our visit went on, other servers showed up. Another waitress/Bar Tender and another waitress. It also looked like they opened up the other room not long before we left. Strang for almost 2 in the afternoon, but hey. When the other staff showed up, the attentiveness didn't really increase. It seemed they were too busy trying to play catch up. The next part is informational only. You do with this information as you will. It plays no part in my rating. Let your own personal beliefs and politics us this as you see fit. None of the staff I saw wore masks. None of the staff I saw wore gloves. I did not see any hand sanitizing areas. The majority of the patronage did not wear masks. The wearing of masks was not enforced. Social Distancing was not done. Limited seating was not done. We were rubbing backs and shoulders with the tables next to us. read more

I was visiting Illinois and we stopped here. What a great idea! We were seated right away. I ordered a spicy Bloody Mary, at the waitress' suggestion. The waitress was friendly, fun and had a great disposition, she said that they had a special mix and that they were very popular there. So, I went with it. I was glad I did. It was really tasty, and I am very particular with my Bloody Marys, like really particular. So, they passed the Bloody Mary test! I was like, yay! I was in a big group and three of us ordered the steak special...I ordered mine rare like I always do...and it came out rare, I know some people think it's gross, but I like my steak bloody...I think it has to do with me being a Leo...(a lioness), either way, it was yumola! I forgot everything else we ordered, but no one complained about any of it... You know when everyone is quiet while eating? Because everyone is grubbing? That means it is good! Even the young picky ones had zero complaints! Bonus, the slot machines in the front! I put in $20 and ended up with $50! Score! When she got her bill they had charged her the full price of $6.99 for the salad and full price for the sandwich even though she didn't get a side. We all left feeling like she was cheated. Their burgers are great, their pork chop sandwich is great, they make homemade batter for onion rings, pickle chips, etc and they have a good Friday night fish fry. Also, on Mondays and Wednesdays they have $1 domestic bottle all night. I know that on Wednesdays it's supposed to be karaoke but usually people(a lot of people) just request songs and dance all night. It is literally the only place I have seen people dance en-mass in Freeport. read more

Found this place thanks to other Yelpers. Like others heading back to Chicago from a weekend getaway. If you walk away hungry from this place, you didn't try. I went with the open face steak sandwich. The ribeye was cooked perfectly. The hand breaded onion rings are excellent. Their breading is crispy like a tempura and an excellent crunch. My wife had the pork tenderloin sandwich. The pork was done fresh for her order and was not one of those processed tenderloins you get at some places. The breading was crispy and done right. I am looking forward to my next visit to the area so I can stop here again! Don't pass this one up. They do specialty drinks in a 16 oz mason jar for $5. read more
