Gin will always be my liquor of choice, and I always appreciate the quality of a craft gin. Having been to some cocktail bars in Portland and surrounding areas, I had heard of and tried Bimini gin, which I thoroughly enjoyed. After doing some research, I realized that it was crafted in Biddeford, Maine (my hometown!) by Round Turn Distilling, and I looked forward to visiting their distillery. It took some time, but I finally was able to make it to Round Turn, which is located in the Pepperell Mill campus by Banded Brewing and Portland Pie. Their space is nice and open with a lot of natural light shining through large windows. The venue is feels industrial with their metallic chairs and exposed piping on the ceiling against the freshly oiled wooden floors of the mill. I ended up sitting at the quaint bar where I was quickly greeted by the bartender. He asked if I had been to the distillery before, and at my response of "no", he quickly poured me a shot of the gin to taste. As I browsed through the menu, I noticed that Round Turn as a great deal of drink offerings. Since it is winter, they had many warm-drink and holiday-themed specials, however, they still had their typical options as well. They have an extensive list of tonics to choose from to pair with their gin, and if there are too many to make a choice from, you can order a flight of 5 gin and tonics of your choosing for $15! Their other drink options are around the $8 range, which I think is a steal for an original craft cocktail these days. For my drink, I ordered a special that had gin (obvi), cranberry, lime, and bitters. It was incredibly well-made and the flavors truly complimented each other perfectly! I don't know why it took me so long to make it here, but I will definitely come to taste more of their drinks, and I am certainly eyeing that gin and tonic flight for my next visit!

Wowza. This place blew my socks off. Stopped in to try a flight of gin and tonics (my favorite drink, so the chance to try it four different ways? Game on.) The owner was kind enough to let us try a sample of the gin first, so we knew what it tasted like on its own and WOW. It has a lively, fresh, sweet smell and packs quite a punch! Each gin and tonic in the flight had its own distinctive flavor, and each was like a fabulous little treat. For $13 a flight, I promise you, it's worth every penny. The bartender was very knowledgeable and friendly, and didn't seem put out at all as we fired question after semi-slurred question at him ("what made you want to go into distilling? Why is your gin so darn tasty?") The man is a saint. Round Turn has a nice drink menu with some other delicious-looking gin concoctions, but the flight did us in. All the more reason to come back for another visit!

This place is absolutely uplifting! Gin, a spirit that has been given the moniker of "granny crack" has risen to a whole new level. Bimini has a long list of classics like the gin and tonic combined with a cucumber/ lime drink called the "garden club." All drink are very flavor and botanical forward, and really put a new spin on the idea of gin. This is definitely NOT your grandma's gin (although I am sure she'd love it) and Round Turn's tasting room is both reminiscent of the swanky 50's and today! This place is a must visit!!!!

You know, I am not really sure where the distilling takes place at this distillery. I made a special appointment to pick up a bottle of their only product, which is a Gin named Bimini, at the request of some visitors who are gin-crazed. I associate gin with Kennebunkport WASPs swilling their fifth G&T and boasting about offshore assets, so I really am not qualified to judge it. But nobody seems to want to write about Round Turn, and I think they need some props!! The owner, I guess, opened up this vast room with nothing in it but some tables at the end with tasting glasses and sold me a fifth of the product. My visitors raved and raved about the lightness and drinkability of this gin, how ethereal the nose was and yadda yadda yadda. After my second G&T I tended to agree with them......

Batson River is the latter, and we loved our lunch outing in one of the adorable seasonal outdoor ice fishing sheds. We chose a few "handhelds," including the blackened haddock tacos and fried haddock sandwich, both of which are served with a red cabbage slaw. I enjoyed the tacos - the ratio of fish to slaw and aioli, etc. was just right. And the sandwiches are served with a generous amount of crispy French fries. On a weekday in March, many of the local shops and restaurants were closed. It was an unseasonably warm day, and we were happy to stumble upon Batson River for a fun and memorable lunch!

When we arrived with our dog to check in, we were given a couple of seating options in the outside heated deck area. We chose seats looking outside, which were topped with fur warmers, which made them comfortable to sit on. There are plenty of heaters on, which made it nice and cozy. Also, the plethora of Christmas decorations inside and out, made it also feel cozy, and festive. For lunch, I had the blackened fish tacos, which comes with mango pico, red cabbage slaw, chipotle aioli, cotija, on corn tortillas. They were super flavorful, and delicious. I stuck with fries, and they even had sour cream for dipping them. We will absolutely be back to try more of the menu!

We usually order their popcorn as well: $5 for a bowl with unlimited refills. Great cocktails + great popcorn + any of the boardgames that they have on hand = a perfect rainy-day afternoon. I also have to give a special shout-out to the staff at Three of Strong for allowing me to host part of my 30th birthday at the distillery when a previously planned picnic got rained out. I cannot emphasize enough how welcoming and helpful everyone was, setting tables up last minute to seat our large group, getting us paper plates, a knife, and a lighter when I was woefully unprepared for the cake-cutting, and slinging great drinks all afternoon to keep everyone entertained. We've since moved out of Portland, but Three of Strong remains one of our favorite go-to's during our time there. I'd give them 10 stars if they could, and you can be sure we'll be visiting next time we're back in town!

The service was great, our server, Courtney, was exceptionally friendly, helpful in guiding us through the selection, and made the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable. I want to note, as a point of context, that in September the production facility of Sweetgrass's main operation in Union suffered a devastating fire. Despite that, the Portland tasting room remains open and functioning, which is a testament to their resilience. On the tasting side the variety was solid, and the $1 price point made it easy to try a bunch of things. The ambiance is cozy and inviting. If I were to pick one improvement, I'd say the tasting pours felt a bit light compared to some other spots I've been to....not a complaint, just an observation given the price point and expectations. In all, Sweetgrass is a strong pick if you're looking for a laid-back, local winery/distillery stop in Portland with friendly staff (shoutout to Courtney) and wallet-friendly tastings.

Keith has been in the alcohol business since 1992, and he earned his MS degree in Food Science and Enology. Constance has been called the heart, soul and brains behind the business. She spends most of her time in the fields, gardens and barns that produce the various ingredients used for making their wine and spirits. Sweetgrass is Maine's first farm winery & distillery; using over 70,000 pounds of Maine-grown fruit and grain each year. The distilled spirits are hand crafted in old world tradition with a copper alembic, still capturing the full flavors of their gin, rum, and traditional apple brandy. A secondary tasting room and retail shop opened on historic Fore Street in the Old Port section of Portland in February 2014. In September 2025, a debilitating fire destroyed the Union facility. The Old Port location remains open, but the future of the Union location remains uncertain. My extended family and I visited Sweetgrass's Portland location this past summer while we were vacationing in Maine. While exploring Old Port, we walked past their window and I said, "Hey, this looks like a cool place!" We went inside and signed up for a tasting. For just $10, customers can choose any five wines, ciders or spirits to taste. The five that I chose included "Maine Hard Imperial Cider" (Dry Cider), "Blueberry Smash" (Semi-Sweet Dessert Wine), "Back River Gin", "Cranberry Gin", and "Apple Brandy". The latter was easily my favorite of the tasting, but unfortunately they had no more bottles for purchase. I plan on ordering some online in the future. I am so happy that I discovered the Old Port tasting room by chance. I felt really bad when I learned later on that the Union location burned down. I'm happy to hear that no one was hurt and I hope that they are able to rebuild.
