Kombucha: a flight of kombucha for less than $20! We tried literally all the flavors and I must say, the Peach hyssop needs to stay. The Maine blueberry is always a classic with its natural blueberry flavor (and not artificial candy esq flavoring). The Aronia berry shiso is also a hit since it has that shiso minty fragrance. The pine and lavender has that musky pine flavor if you're looking for something that tastes a little stronger. But honestly you can't go wrong with any of the choices. I adore this place. The inside is spacious, with a ton of bar seating, table seating, and plush couches if you can snag them. The ceilings are high and there are plants galore. And best of all, there's no pressure to be in-and-out: I've spent hours here sipping on kombucha and reading, chatting with friends, avoiding the rain, etc., and never felt any pressure to rush and leave. That, alone, makes Root Wild such a haven. The kombucha is also standout: not to sweet, not too vinegary, and perfectly carbonated. They also have awesome seasonal flavors - definitely get the spiced apple kombucha (a fall special) if they have it! And for newer kombucha drinkers, you can purchase a flight and try out all of their flavors. My husband and I stumbled upon this kombuchary staying at an Airbnb down the street. This place was my absolute favorite find during our weekend in Portland, ME. I'd never heard of a kombuchary before, and I'm not much of a drinker, which was great that they had varying levels of alcohol content. They also sold their kombucha in cans, which we snugged a few different flavors to try on our picnics around Portland. I went with a watermelon lime slushee. So, I don't like watermelon drinks...I love the fruit, but I just can't stand artificial watermelon, which is what I was afraid of. However, I've never had a kombucha slushee and this drink had the least amount of alcohol. I was blown away by how good this slushee was. The watermelon lime flavor was refreshing, tart, sweet, clean, and crisp. Not at all artificial. I was immediately obsessed. We came back the next day, but they were closed for a private event. Root Wild is like the bougie counterpart to UFF. It's a beautiful space with outdoor seating and gorgeous warm interior. Flights are affordable and offer a great way to try a lot of flavors. It's a bit of a secret but this is a great alternative to coffee shops during the day if you're looking for a place to do work on a laptop or work on that novel that you've started and stopped every nanowrimo. I pretty much like the kombucha much more than UFF -- it's less vinegary and the flavors are fun. They don't make new flavors often but a couple times a year there's some new faces. The inside has some seating, it is in the style of the stripped down brewery with exposed ductwork and industrial fans and concrete floors, etc. Some smaller tables, larger "community" tables, two really sweet couches. A wonderful option amidst all the breweries and distilleries for a chill rejuvenating sit on the sofa by the fireplace while enjoying the lovely atmosphere. Prices are fantastic too and the staff is very helpful. Wish we had something like this in Boston. My favorites include two regulars: spiced apple (with chaga and chai) and blueberry boost (with lemon thyme and echinacea root); and, two of their in-house specials: pineapple/jalapeno and rhubarb/strawberry. The ambiance of Root Wild is also one of my favorite things about them. They have SO much space. They have outdoor tables, bar seating, couches, and everything else in between. My girlfriend wanted to try Root Wild, so we came right before heading to the airport on our trip back from Acadia. We parked out on the street a little because the parking is limited. It's a nice street though, we had gone up the way to Oxbow Brewing and the Duckfat Frites Shack a couple days before. We shared a flight of kombucha - blueberry, pine & lavender, grapefruit, and plum & shiso. I like some of the interesting flavors like the hint of lavender or shiso, but it was more subtle than what I expected. Most of them were sweet and not too strong or fizzy. The bar itself is pretty nice with good seating and fun games + a ping pong table. We ended up playing ping pong for a bit until it got a little much to chase the ball when it kept rolling outside almost onto the street. Overall, pretty nice kombucha brewery with indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of creative fun flavors to try. read more

Beer is the best...okay, maybe that's just my opinion. I know my fiancée would not make the same statement and so it's exciting to realize places like Root Wild Kombucha exist. We visited this brewery doppelgänger back on our summer trip to Portland, Maine and had an amazingly awesome experience. Two notes to the first part of my writing: (1) I say "brewery doppelgänger" because Root Wild could easily be mistaken as an actual beer-making brewery (aesthetics give it that casual feel with rustic/greenery notes and brewing equipment out in the open). (2) It might not make the most sense to compare a kombuchery (fun word) to a brewery as you're going to have to drink quite a lot of kombucha to start feeling any alcoholic side effects. Even so, this is a 21 and older drinking spot and it's plainly stated on the menu. Sorry, kiddies. Speaking of menus and beer and all that jazz, you actually will find a couple of menus at Root Wild. The first menu consists of 8 kombucha selections of varying flavors (fruits, spices, and florals help make up the differences). These are your classic types of kombucha with just a hint of alcohol due to fermentation. The second menu is where you'll actually find a strong connection to the land of alcohol with a few "hard" kombucha options (ABVs boosted up to around 3%-6%) as well as some actual good ol' beer (I guess that "brewery" word does work!). This being our third alcohol-based spot of the day, we decided to stick with the basic-style kombucha. Continuing with my confusing back and forth about brewery feels, Root Wild rocks the brewery idea by offering flights and tasters of their 'buch which makes it a little easier (and cost effective) to sample a bunch of flavors. And let me tell you, you should definitely do this if you can because there are some fantastic tastes to be had here. Root Wild's kombucha isn't vinegary which you'll find with some kombucha and it won't overly tart out your palate. The balance is perfection. Bluberry, Vanilla Rooibos, Grapefruit, and Beach Rose were the four we initially tried in our flight. Each one had their distinct flavors fly through on every sip (and that vanilla one was just intriguingly different). There was some nice complexion found in each kombucha from the added spices and herbs. A specific shoutout has to go to the extra taster I got of their pineapple variety. It was concocted with turmeric, black pepper, and jalapeño which gave it this fruity start with a peppery kick on the finish. Absolutely amazing! I could stop here to warrant my five star review, but I'll throw in a few more positive pieces just in case. The staff member behind the bar was a laid back, but assertively friendly employee who made the experience all the better. So did the decent pricing ($10 for a flight, $3 for a 6oz pour) and the fact that most of Root Wild's kombucha was purchasable in cans. We were able to mix and match so we took home a few cans for later enjoyment including a spiced apple variety that wasn't available on tap at the time. Nice. Overall, Root Wild is a glorious and unique spot. It's got all the aspects of a brewery (including beer!), but the fact that it isn't a brewery makes it stand out from any other alcohol distributing establishment. It breathes life into an industry that can occasionally feel a little monotonous so thanks for being different, Root Wild, and making this beer fan expand his horizons just a little bit more. read more

I'm not sure if kombuchery's are a new thing but it is a great concept and unsurprising for Maine given how many known regular breweries there are. This brewery is not much different, only it serves up Kombucha. Of all the breweries I've visited they all have a "look" - a fridge for to-go cans, bench and counter seating, merch and music. That's all here at Root Wild oh and they have a Ping ping table. Of course I went with a flight including a lavender and a peach flavor inspired brew but cannot remember the names. Some were hit and miss but the purple haze was easily the best. With a sweet taste to offset the bitterness. The server was very friendly and told me about all the present kombucha on tap along with their brewery-esque names. There is plenty of seating and they're dog friendly which is welcomed. The area is situated in more a neighborhood so it was cool seeing folks just walk up and sit down for a drink. Oh, Root Wild. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways! Every weekend like clockwork we head in to Portland to refresh our two growlers...and then find something else to do. Ha! Came here on a Saturday in the early afternoon and there was only 2-3 other parties here so we didn't have much trouble getting a seat. The guy working at the front was very friendly and helpful in assisting us with choosing what to get, but there wasn't much of a question: we got the flights in order to try as much as possible. I found the flavor of the kombucha overall a little weak. Store brands probably have a lot of other chemicals and ingredients to make them last longer of course, but the flavor in general was a lot less potent than what I'm used to. Nonetheless, the different types and variety of kombucha was excellent and very well executed in my opinion. I enjoyed the grapefruit, ginger, and strawberry flavors the most - I don't personally enjoy many floral flavors, but I'd honestly recommend you try all of them though to find the ones that best suit your tastes! But if you have never tried kombucha or have but found something wrong with it then still give it a try. I believe this place could change your mind on what kombucha can be. Forget about what grocery store brands you have tried. Also they have a few beers on tap as well so even if you can't do kombucha then try their beer. They have a super cool garage door that opens to an awesome view of Portland from the top of Fox St. They have a small parking lot with 3-4 spaces and outside seating as well. The space is small so hopefully you visit when it's not busy. Luckily, as I said, the garage bay opens and with the outdoor seating, it feels bigger. The kombucha is unique and delicious. Really fun spot to stop by! I'm a big kombucha fan but had never been to a kombuchary (for those that are unfamiliar with the term, it's essentially the term for a brewery but with kombucha). We were driving around town and happened to see this spot and pullover for a try. The individual running the spot was super friendly and helped us pick a few to try out. We ended up doing two 6oz pours, I tried the blueberry and the peach which were both fantastic! I will say the only downside of this spot is the outdoor seating is a little bit limited. The day we were there was a good amount of wind and it was difficult given the cups were plastic and were light in weight. I get that with COVID, plastic disposable cups are the best option but the wind did knock over our drinks about 2/3 of the way through. If you can bring your own glass to dump the kombucha in or take it to go, I would recommend that. The price here is very reasonable (2 6oz pours for $5) especially for kombucha which usually runs a bit higher. Overall, great kombucha but the seating option (given the wind and COVID) wasn't ideal. Came here around 2pm on a Saturday as a group of 6 and it was pretty empty. Later in the afternoon, however, more and more people started showing up. We sat inside to escape the heat, and found that it was a nice place to relax and play games with one of their decks of cards. There are also board games and a ping pong table, which a few of us played for a bit. We ordered two flights to share and the standouts for me were the Peach and Beach Rose flavors. I'm not usually a kombucha person but these were definitely refreshing. We did end up leaving though because there were bees flying around inside and a few of my friends weren't huge fans of bees.
