I've been meaning to give some BIG love to Bunker Brewing for a long time. The entire vibe at BB is so relaxed and friendly, that it is the only brewery i've seen in this town with families with kids and dogs spread out on tables inside and outside playing board games! Bunker is also off the beaten path in Portland, far from the everyday maddening brewery crowds seen in other parts of the city. There is always parking. The management at Bunker is so nice, last spring they let me host a small work event on a Sunday afternoon in a small corner of their outside deck! They don't serve food, just popcorn and chips but often have a food truck parked outside. Staff is incredibly friendly and lovely! read more

What an awesome place ! We went on our honeymoon to Portland and were hitting some breweries. This had been recommended to us to check out. I'm glad we did. It's a welcoming atmosphere and the staff and customers were happy to chat with us about where else to try. I had a delicious stout and hubby had two different ipas. Great local brewery in Portland, love the friendly neighborhood feel here. Lots of open seating inside and out. Smaller bar inside with picnic tables. On nice days, the side wall opens up for more seating outside. Lot's of food trucks all lined up outside when we were there. Great options. We discovered Bunker Brewing when they were hosting Portland's traveling food truck party Gastro Gogo. Their flight prices are inexpensive in comparison to other places we've been to. I was pleasantly surprised by the Hacienda Lime (Mexican style lager with a bit of lime). It reminded me more of a margarita squeezed into a beer. Like many of the breweries around Portland, my favorite thing is the dogs. I love that dogs are allowed. Beer + dogs = happy life! read more

Here on the 4th of a July and there is only one woman working and she KILLED IT!!! There was a huge line when we arrived and she helped every person in line while keeping a smile on her face. Slowly and steadily the line shrunk, and once she had served everyone in line, the whole brewery broke into a raucous applause for a job well done. Amazing work! What a fun place...it was so blasted cold that night, but my friend wanted to go out for a beer. OK...maybe it was my idea for the beer, but she drove and brought me to Bunker. Now, the drive to Bunker is a bit sketchy looking, but when you come around the side of the building...there is a great sized lot...clear sky view towards the airport and a lot of space. I can only imagine what the area is like on warm days...outside seating and all. Can't wait to check that out. The inside was a basic, local brew pub environment with ping pong table and lots of inside seating available. They have snacks which is always a good option to have for people. The ability to try flights is my favorite, so you can get a sample of the different brews available. The staff was very friendly and patient especially with me. Always asking questions and trying to figure out which 4 to choose. Seems like an easy task...well go out with me sometime! Thanks for a nice relaxing Friday night. read more

In a city that is known for it's craft beer options, it makes it difficult to stand out and be that "go-to" place. I had heard of Bunker Brewing from some friends who had gone numerous times, however, being that I live in the city, I found it hard to get myself there, being that it is nestled in the outskirts of Portland. However, I finally had a chance to go one Thursday after work, and I was finally able to see what I was missing out on. I ended up getting to Bunker brewing around 4pm on a Thursday afternoon, and it was quiet with only a couple other people at the venue. Getting to Bunker can be challenging at first, as it is in the very back of a large building, but that is what keeps the tourists away from this hidden gem! The space is very industrial, but the bar and facility is maintained nicely and looks great! So why four stars and not five? The day I went, they only had one IPA on tap, which was good, but I just wish they had more of a selection. Overall, this is a great brewery, especially when you need to escape the commercialized nature of other breweries. read more

We started a St. Patricks day pub crawl here. Fun, relaxed atmosphere and the Machine Pilz was a very tasty beer.

I really loved it here. My boyfriend and I visited at around 12 pm on a Saturday, and we were the only people there (but it was an off-hour, cold, and raining). I am no beer connoisseur, but we both loved the flights that we got, and while I can't remember the exact pricing, I remember it being really reasonable. You're the best, around! Nothing's ever going to keep you down! I know it, Ralph Machio knows (Ralph Machio may not know it), Bunker is the best. All due respect to Bissell and Maine Beer Co. They make fantastic beers, but their taprooms are cavernous places to try a beer, not to really hang out at length in my humble opinion. Bunker on the other hand has always felt like a clubhouse. Maybe a little less so since they moved from Anderson Street to.... not sure of the street actually but it's near Salvage. It's still a cool, secluded spot with a nice, generally chill patio with tons of outside tables. You'll have the typical beer tourists stopping in for flights or someone in after a beer release, but a lot of people are just there to hang out. Always having a nice mix of beer options helps on this front too. Their flagship pilsner is always great and easy drinking for people who don't like IPAs, usually some fruity kettle sours on, more often than not a darkish beer of some kind... imperial stout, their brown ale which is also excellent, and they do hazy IPAs really well too. Ping pong, one pinball machine, if it's not insane they may take a vinyl request, bands and DJs pretty often, and just a chill, friendly vibe. I took a short road trip to Portland to see Murder By Death. I searched for breweries and this was a quick walk from where I was staying. I would highly recommend the terrarium. It was scrumptious. The bartender was really nice too. I left the bathroom, made a wrong turn and ended up behind the bar. I felt like a dildo but she made a joke and then I felt like less of a dildo. Bunker is a great drinking spot tucked away from all the bustle of downtown Portland but close enough that you could walk back to civilization relatively easily! They have great bands (rotating brass / bluegrass, etc.) and always have great beers on draft! Bunker Brewing is a local brewery that's been on my "places to visit" list for Portland since I first sampled their Czech-style pilsner at Salvage a few weeks back. It's nearly impossible to find a Maine brewer willing to tackle lager-style beer, so that immediately got my attention; that and the drinkability and smooth flavor of the Machine Czech Pils. Located on Anderson Street, in (y)East Bayside, Bunker isn't the easiest place to find. However, after stopping at Urban Farm Fermentory up the street, I was directed a few doors down. When I saw people out back on the deck, enjoying beer in the welcome mid-60 degree sunshine, I knew I had found the place. Upon walking in, Joe (pouring samples) offered me a taste of one of the two beers on tap for Saturday's beer-tasting. In fact, they have tastings and growler filling every Thursday and Friday evening from 5PM to 8PM, and Saturdays noon to 5PM. They serve samples in a small mason jar for a measly $1 per tasting. For about 6 ounces of beer that's a deal, and then, when it's their flagship pilsner, or a dark bock like the other Saturday beer choice, it's a beer-lover's dream driveby. Not knowing what to expect upon walking in, what I especially liked about Bunker was the casual, homey vibe, Joe's knowledge and willingness to talk about their beer, and how they make first-time visitors feel like they are simply tapping a keg in their backyard worked for me. This is big for me because sometimes in Portland, you get the "you're bothering me" hipster-style customer service which I find really off-putting and is easy to find in the city. If you can't make it down to Anderson Street, you can also sample their beer at Sonny's, which always has a dedicated tap for Bunker's beer, as well as at Salvage. Oh, and by-the-way, Jay Villani, who owns both of those eateries, is also Bunker Brewing's co-founder (along with Chresten Sorensen). Head on down to Anderson Street for a taste, and take a growler home with you, too. read more

I'm lucky to be the next door neighbor to Bunker (Red Hook Design), and while I'm not a beer aficionado, I'm here to say that Bunker's Machine Czeck Pilsner is one of the finest beers I have experienced. Aside from the incredibly pleasant space, especially in weather that let's them open up to the outdoor patio, and a staff of the nicest folks you would ever want to meet, their dedication to the craft of making fine beer is exemplary. Day in and day out I see the never ending stream of folks who agree that Bunker has hit on the perfect balance of place, people, and fine beer. Kudos !!!!! read more

Bunker Hill is by far one of the smallest breweries I have ever been to. It reminds me of a one-room brick school house and perhaps was back in the day. We originally walked up to the building with its neon "beer" sign and the brick exterior and did not enter because it didn't look like they had a tasting room. Supposedly when they took over the place, they never removed the "private" sign on the front door. I guess I'm too polite to not ignore that sign? Don't be me, just open the door! They are usually open 12-5pm and when you go in the bare interior will leave you pleasantly surprised. If you're going for a tasting it is $3 for a flight... Yes that's a dollar for each 4oz of beer they have on tap (I only say 3 taps). I love Maine breweries. You'll drink the beer out of unlabeled canning jars that match the decoration of the place, bare and unimaginative. Which really works for them, it gives you a local feeling at its best. The beers that we tried are the opposite of the interior, not only encompassed local flavor but was imaginative. They had bold flavors including one with Jalapenos! The most unique thing about this brewery was their growlers that have a unique shape and are larger than one you'd commonly find in the liquor store. They are $15 to refill, probably closer to 35-40 oz of beer. Not a bad deal! Unfortunately they ran out of growlers, I missed out on taking the Jalapeno beer home. Great surprise brewery! When we drove in, I had no idea what to expect because it seemed like we were going into an abandoned warehouse parking lot, but when we turned the corner, there was an awesome open brewery! I went on a Sunday and it was fairly warm out, so it was completely opened up. There was cornhole and ping pong as well as long tables to drink with friends. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a flight of fantastic beer and then stuck around for some more beers games. They offer several sizes which was perfect to try all of them. I loved these beers and the ambiance was fun and casual. My personal favorite beers were the Salad Daze and the Eat the Sun. Both were light and easy to drink. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a casual brewery in the area! The prices are awesome and the employees are great. read more

A couple friends and I went in to try the "flight" and were greeted by an extremely un-friendly and un-enthusiastic beer-pourer. The title bartender seems inappropriate. The three beers on tap were all named, however the unfriendly beer-pourer only referred to them as the type of beer they were. When asked to clarify which beer was which, we were presented with some attitude. Total turn off. On the bright side, they have a great seating area out back and apparently live music sometimes. Love love loved this place! I stopped here on a sunny weekday after work with a friend and had such a fun time! It was a beautiful day, so we chose to sit outside at the picnic tables they had set up out there. They have giant doors that were left open to the inside, which really made it feel like a homey welcoming atmosphere. They were playing music inside that could be heard from the outside, and they allow dogs on the patio too...all the more reason to love this place. My friend and I got flights and were able to try several of their brews. I enjoyed every single one of them, but my favorite by far was the stout. I had to wait for awhile as it is a nitro so it takes a bit for the head to settle, but it was well worth the wait. I love trying stouts from different places, and I was happy to have tried this one. Don't let the entrance to the road back there fool you...once you get past the abandoned warehouse-y vibe at the start of the street it opens up to this diamond in the ruff. There is plenty of parking and the staff are super nice. Will be back again for sure! read more

Good beers and fun place to hang out! Out of the 14-15 breweries we hit at the Portland area, we spent more time at Bunker than any other location (and it was one of only a handful that we ended up hitting twice), for a few reasons: 1) The location is a little "off the beaten path" -- it's somewhat close to Bissell Brothers, but it's not in the "brewery cluster" industrial parks over by Allagash or Oxbow, so there's a lot less foot traffic (and perhaps less brewery tour buses, as well?) This means it was never crazy crowded! 2) The beers are good -- while none of them are exceptionally "unique", they have good examples of a variety of styles, including IPA (of course), Czech-style pilsner, baltic porter, imperial stout, and more. (My favorites were the pils, porter, and stout) 3) Fun activities to do while hanging out: cornhole (several breweries had this, but others were sometimes too busy to get a chance to play) and ping-pong (didn't see any other place that offered this option) read more

I've been a fan of Bunker since they opened their doors, and I LOVE the new location. It's a bit off the beaten path, but the extra room has allowed the to expand their brewing capabilities. Bunker is my go-to brewery in Portland! They won me over with Machine, a Czech-like pilsner. It's the closest to the real thing I've had since I was in Czech! The atmosphere is always nice and friendly, and the staff are lovely. read more

The new space is really cool, but I think they still are doing work on it. I've been in here twice. The second time I was there they had put in a ping pong table and boxes for cornhole, which is a cool bonus. Onto what really matters, the staff is super friendly and the beer is very good. I don't love every beer, but they're all good, and a few are excellent. Obviously the Salad Daze is one of their big ones, which is delicious, and personally I like the Cypher: a hoppy lager, weighing in at 6.4% ABV. Drinks mostly like an ale but definitely has some subtle lager qualities. Cypher has quickly become one of my favorite all time beers. Another good selling point is Bunker mixes it up with styles a little more than a lot of other local breweries; you'll find a lot more than just IPA's here. No food, don't come hungry. Impossible to see from the street, they need some more signage. The building is at the back of a parking lot. I don't think the hours listed on Yelp are correct... I think they're open every day of the week at the new location. I believe they open at 3pm Mon-Thurs, and at Noon Fri-Sun. read more
