My septic system had not been pumped for over 10 years. I was having problems, and needed to have it emptied out. When I called, they told me the cost would normally not exceed $125. A tech came out the next day, and told me "Saturday service will be significantly more expensive if it needs to be pumped, and did not bring the pump truck out. He opened the cleanout so that any sewage or drainage would go out into the yard instead of backing up in the house, and said he would be back @ 8am on Monday. After 12:00 on Monday, I called to find out where the guy was, and they said they couldn't get to it until Tuesday. I told him we've been draining into the yard since Saturday, and the guy acted shocked, and said someone would be right out. After 10:00am on Tuesday, following multiple calls, the guy finally came out, and said he'd need to locate the tank. After a few hours of no luck doing so, even though my wife told him where it was, the owner came out with a backhoe and located it exactly where my wife said it was. They really hadn't done much at this point, yet were billing me for someone to be out there. They dug down to get to the tank and pumped it out. Meanwhile, the estimated bill was rising rapidly by the hour, and when they finally finished, they handed her a bill for $762. "What happened to $125 max?" "We had trouble finding it, then had to use the backhoe to get down to it." "I told you where it was early on. Do you normally have to dig with a backoe?" "Yes. Usually." "I don't have $760. You told me $125." "Let me call my boss." after the call: "That is the bill. we might be able to make arrangements. How much CAN you pay today?" (disgusted and felt cheated and lied to) "I only have $600 until the end of the month, and it's only the 7th. I need to pay my other bills, and we still need to eat." "I'll call my boss." (after the call) "We can take the $600 and the rest next month." "Seriously? That's the best you can do?" "Yes." We paid the $600, and had a devastating month. This was in the beginning of January, and we're still having financial trouble because of that. I have subsequently talked to several people about our experience, and they all had used roto-rooter, and had similar experiences. The process of deceit is disturbing. There are only two companies up here that do septic pumping, and neither of them have reviews, so I went with the name-recognition. Now I hope other people will not be deceived like I was. read more
