I stopped by Rossy's Bakery specifically for tres leches cake, one of my favorite cakes in the world. Theirs did not disappoint. They offer strawberry and caramel tres leches cake flavors, each for $6 a slice. I had also wanted to try their pineapple cake and guava cake, but they were not available and would have required waiting an extra hour. I ultimately ordered the strawberry tres leches cake, which was terrific. It had a very strong vanilla taste in the milk-soaked sponge, as well as a generous amount of strawberry jam and whipped cream. All very decadent, but scrumptious. The cake slice was an absolute hit with my kids. The staff was very kind and patient with answering my questions. Even at around 3PM they were doing a steady business with their late lunch service. They offer what appeared to be reasonably priced small- and large-sized hot Dominican meals, with fish priced slightly more. Rossy's Bakery is handing its first loss since 1954, which was the last time the inflation rate decreased YOY. $8.50 for a small plate and $12 for a large of dominican style home cooked food in Lower Manhattan is a STEAL. You get a full plate of chicken, rice, beans, and plantains. $3 for one of these fat Empanadas too. Legendary. I'm a rotisserie chicken snob, so I'd be lying if I said this was the best chicken I've ever had, but it was pretty damn good. It's a clean meal that brought me back to homeostasis. Ribs, chicken, cod fish.... along with rice and plenty of other sides. It's My Mami's favorite and she's 88 years old and NEVER likes eating out. She's traditionally a lady who believes in home cooking. But the food here is Supreme. Great little spot to grab a decent plate of food for a decent price. Food is good but not fantastic. Yesterday I ordered steak with white rice and pernil with arroz con gandules. Rice was pretty yummy but the pernil was very salty and just had a different taste to it that I'm not use to. I would have given them a solid three and a half stars but as you may already know, Yelp doesn't allow half stars. The space is nice but way too small which makes for uncomfortable dine in eating. Plus, it gets hot and I can't eat and sweat at the same time. LOL Yesterday while I was here I also ordered a birthday cake for my son. I used to live in the area and went to this place basically every morning for their iced coffee and empanadas. I'm asian, so i can't say if they are authentic or not but their empanadas are DELICIOUS! I love empanadas so I've had empanadas from a lot of places in NJ/NY. Rossy's empanadas are the best! I am a fan of the empanadas (beef and cheese is my favorite!). I have yet to try some of their pastries like cupcakes and smoothies. They all look so delicious. I love their chicken dishes -- both the roast chicken and the chicken braised in tomato sauce (I think). It reminded me of the Filipino dish chicken afritada without the carrots and potatoes. I absolutely love this place. Rossy is extremely attentive, detail-orientated, and truly is a perfectionist. I ordered a cake for my 21st birthday and explained everything I wanted on the cake. She asked me questions to verify my details, and explained everything over again to me. I was allowed to sample the cake flavors, I picked pineapple, dulce de leche, custard, and guava to taste. On the top layer of the cake, I chose vanilla custard, and the bottom layer guava mixed with dulce. I even called a week before my pick up date to make changes on my cake. The outcome was so beautiful, my cake was absolutely gorgeous. My guests loved the flavors and the way the cake looked. A dominican cake that looks gorgeous and taste amazing! I contacted Rossy about 10 days before my husband's surprise 30th birthday party in midtown Manhattan. I had this huge surprise dinner at Carmine's for about 15 people and just like the menu, I wanted his cake to be just as spectacular. I called her 10 days before asking for a ridiculous dulce de leche two tier cake to feed approximately 12-15 people. I wanted something spectacular. Rossy DELIVERED in a matter of days. But delivered like I've never seen anyone deliver. I absolutely adored her and she is now our permanent birthday cake baker. She's amazing and sweet and I will never leave her. Incredible, hearty Spanish food. There's something so magical about rice, beans, and meat that just makes my heart sing. Real food for a very good price. The rice, bean, and meat dishes range from ($5-7) and they give you a TON of food. It's also amazing quality as well. This place seems like somewhere the locals frequent and I can see why. (Review is only of their cakes as that is all I have tried from them) I was told of Rossy's bakery after not being satisfied with the Dominican cake from various recommended bakeries in Washington Heights. I was a little hesitant about the authenticity of Rossy's since it wasn't in a typical Hispanic neighborhood but decided to give it a try since it was recommended by a very picky family member. Sometimes with cakes the dye can give the frosting a bitter taste so I was a little worried when I picked up the first cake and saw that the cake was completely covered in pink frosting (as opposed to being covered in white and just having accents of whatever color one chooses). Needless to say, from the 5 stars, I have been extremely happy with the cakes from Rossy's and have been going to them since. The cake is moist and tastes just right. The frosting (my favorite part of the cake) is neither too bland nor too sweet. They must have figured out a perfect ratio of dye to frosting because the dyed frosting tastes just as good as the undyed frosting. The past two years they have put more sophisticated flowers which I think definitely upgrade the look of the cake and makes it look more mature and grown-up friendly. I'm no expert on empanadas but these are definitely some of the best I've ever had if you ask me. I just tried Rossy's for the first time and I already know that I'll be back soon. I had the chicken and cheese empanada and OMG, it was so good. The outside was crispy but not greasy and the filling was super flavorful and had the perfect amount of cheese. It was also pretty big especially since it only cost 2$. I only tried the empanada but everything they had on the counter looked tantalizing, like the donuts in the glass case and one of the dinner platter things that someone else had ordered. It's hard to find more bang for your buck than at Rossy's, especially in this neighborhood. 10/10 would recommend! read more

I live above this place and it's one of the best deals in the 'hood. My favorites are the chicken soup and the different kinds of empanadas. Everything is super-cheap and comes in big portions. A delicious breakfast of two eggs, home fries, bacon or sausage and Latin-style pressed toast is only $5! The guava pastries, one of their signatures, are delicious and festive-looking. They also make elaborate cakes for special occasions. You can't get any more local than this as the place is run by a Latino family who live across the street, and the business received funding from the Lower East Side People's Credit Union down the street. I have no idea what Rossy's is like during operating hours because I got my cupcake after it was closed. We were waiting in line to get into Nuyorican Poets Café on a Wednesday night. This cute guy is knocking on the front door and motioning to someone inside to let him in. As he slips through the door, I ask him--totally joking--if he's going to "get me a cupcake." A few minutes later, he ducks out and hands me plastic box with a vanilla cupcake inside! It only cost $1.50, and it wasn't bad. The other girls in my group shared it with me and weren't too impressed. But I would recommend this place because of the awesome experience that I had. I ordered 2 large plates, one with pernil and the other with chicken guisado. The large plates are $7 each and come with rice and plaintains. Additionally, I had to try the chicken and cheese empanada which was just out of this world. Probably the best empanada I have ever had. This was all washed down with 2 juices: one mango and the other passionfruit. I was very, very pleased. The combination just described costs $7, and like I mentioned in an earlier review I wrote for them, their portions are quite generous. The difference this time, is that I came at lunch time when I would hope their food is still relatively fresh. Might be placebo, but I found their food to be a tad bit better so I bumped up my 3.5 star rating to 4 stars instead. However on a negative note their food was quite saltier than I remember it to be.
