Now I am a big fan of pubs and when at my home in Wales I always go down to the same place which I…read morethink many locals do because once you have been you will want to go again as it is absolutely lovely. If you want the same thing as me which is a great atmosphere and very good food and drink then you cannot do much better than the White Lion if you do find yourself in Mid Wales and here is why. - What is the White Lion? The White Lion is a pub and I actually do think they have guest rooms there as well but I have never had the need to stay over so I am not sure what they are like or what the prices are like. Good food is served and nice drinks and the staff are great. It has a beer garden at the back which is handy when the weather gets better but inside the pub it is very spacious and the even better thing is that it is non smoking in there now which is fantastic. - Where can you find them? Their address is as follows: The White Lion, Penterhyden Street, Machynlleth, Powys, SY20 8DN When you are in Machynlleth which is a little town then you will be able to find them easily as they are right by the clock tower which is Machynlleth's centre. - The Actual Inn: From the outside it just looks like a cosy little pub. The building is white which is what you probably expected and the White Lion is displayed in huge black letters. There are a few tables outside but not many maybe ten people can sit there and then to the left of the inn you will see quite a small alley-way which is where you get to the car park. I know it looks small but we get the Jeep down there so it is ok. The car park is quite big and you can see the beer garden from there which is large with a lot of tables there which is nice when the sun shines. There are two entrances inside. The first is at the back which will take you to the main bar and eating area passed where the pool table is. Then there is the front entrance which takes you directly into the bar. The bar and eating areas are extremely clean and there are tables and chairs everywhere so you can always find somewhere to sit. The bar area is to the left which you can still eat in and the actual restaurant is to the right. You have to order at the bar when you have found a table and you will get a number and the staff will wait on you there. The decorations in the pub are quite neutral and there are many nice scenic paintings on the wall of local areas which can be bought on occasions. - Food and Drink: Drinks are quite standard but they do have a good range. You can obviously buy soft drinks and alcoholic ones and I particularly like their flavoured coffees they do. The food is very nice indeed and I have to say (touch wood) that after eighteen years of going there quite a few times a year we have never had a bad meal. We always feel confident enough to take friends there as the food is that good. The choices are quite good ranging from light meals and sandwiches to main meal such as steak and lasagne. My personal favourite is the chicken curry as you can have rice, chip and naan bread which is amazingly good. The meals are a very good size so you will not be going hungry when you have finished and we do have problems eating it all but we usually stuff ourselves as it all tastes so nice. They do have starters and also desserts but they change quite a bit. When you walk in you can also see a specials board which is always different so you can usually find the more exotic meals there. - Prices: The price of everything is quite standard with main meals being around £5 12 each and desserts being around £4. I can't remember about the starters as I don't often have them as I know how big the main courses are. The drinks are also reasonable at around £2 for a J2o and £3.50 for a glass of wine. - Staff: The staff are wonderful here and the lady that owns the place is always there and quite often sits and has a chat with us about how busy it is and how we are doing. Everybody is friendly and considering they are all rushed off their feet they never fail to smile and always take care with your food and drinks so you are getting a good level of service at all times. - Location: The location of this pub is brilliant as it is right in the centre of the town of Machynlleth so you will always be able to find parking if not at the pub at the large car park in town. Plus because it is in the centre if you go in the day you can always go shopping before or after. Plus it is nice sitting outside as you get the great scenery of all the hills around you. - Other: The pub has a great pool table but only one so it is quite hard to get on there at times. Plus the small pool room has its own little access to the bar so you can still order drinks in there while you are playing. In this room there is also a darts board and you can hire out the darts from the bar to play. - Verdict: This pub is great and I think

However I just dont get the condiment system, regular supermarket pots of mint sauce, apple sauce, mustard etc. Which isn't really enough for the sheer quantity of people that eat at their carvery. If it's not busy get a drink, some cutlery and bag a table, then go queue for your food. But as I said earlier be prepared for a long wait on a busy day. They do the carvery everyday too weekdays, last time I had a weekday carvery there it was cheaper than the sundays. You can also get a carvery to go, they will put it in a plastic tray. The decor is oldy worldy black adn white pub sort of thing, horse brasses, lots of dark brown wood, sticky carpet in places. Good clean toilets though. Loads of tables everywhere. But massive plus is the outdoor area, it's great. Canolfan Corris Hostel, or Corris Hostel for short, is a magical place in the small, sleepy village…read moreof Corris on the southern edge of Snowdonia National Forest. They don't accept credit cards here. But don't fret. You CAN trust them. Paying via a bank transfer is an option, especially if you don't have time to send a check through the mail. Back in the U.S. when I first corresponded with Michael, the owner, to figure out the best approach to reserving a room with a deposit, he actually said he would hold the room for me, and I could pay once I arrived. I have a feeling this was an exception. He also welcomed me "... to an ancient culture," meaning one where people don't even think about trust issues between strangers. It's taken for granted. This exchange was the beginning of a truly refreshing and enlightening experience. They pride themselves on being an environmentally-friendly hostel, and they really are. Their dorm rooms are roomy with bunk beds, and decorated nicely. The same is true of their private rooms, which have a double-sized bed below a single-sized bunk bed. They have plenty of private showers. They have a great hall, or common room, where at one end long tables are set up for eating meals or hanging out to play chess or to talk with others staying the night. The other half of this great hall is more cozy with couches in front of a wood-burning stove. Their brightly-lit kitchen is open to everyone staying there, and it has all the basic modern conveniences you need, and if I'm remembering correctly, that includes a food processor. They also have a laundry room, which you access from the outside. Just ask about it. Though they have a dryer, they encourage you to air-dry your clothes, and they do have a powerful dehumidifier to help facilitate the process. I was there only one night, so I didn't get a chance to fully discover all the gems of this place. It's nestled in the picturesque village of Corris. Because it's a mountainous region, the walking is fun for exploring. The grounds keeper, Kevin, is an endearing person, bursting with all kinds of knowledge and philosophy on life to share. Allow yourself the chance to spend some time to take in the tales of this man. Directions Now finding the hostel is a bit tricky. Coming from either the south, take the road A487 to Corris. When you come to the Braich Goch Inn (see photo in Canolfan Corris Hostel's gallery), you'll see a road heading down at a very sharp angle to the left. I believe it's called Bridge Street, but there may not be a sign. You go a ways. When you get to Slaters Arms (pub), turn left. This should be Old School Road (which also may not have a sign), and head up a steep hill. You'll see the hostel on your right. Parking is back down the hill, but it's all right to park your car temporarily to check in, then move your car to the lot. Though I didn't arrive from this direction, if you're driving from the north, it looks like you come from A487, and you'll see Neptune House. There you'll see, what I believe is Old School Road, and you take a sharp left. Go for awhile, and you should get to the hostel. If I ever find myself in Wales again, I will definitely make sure to reserve a room here and try to stay a few days.

Corris is a funny little village an old slate miners' village which is appropriately grey in winter but it's set right in the hills and with easy access to good walks, the Corris Craft Centre, King Arthur's Labyrinth and the Centre for Alternative Technology. The hostel is an old Welsh schoolhouse with lovely wood burning fire for those chilly winter eves. Those that run the hostel are friendly and helpful and will point you in the direction of things to do in the area.

A fantastic setting and an equally impressive dining experience. The Brigands Inn is a large place, with a variety of different types of areas to dine, including luxurious leather sofas, conventional restaurant tables and a 'Snug'. Probably the biggest snug I've ever been in though, with comfortable sofas, a great place to relax and wile away a few hours. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the menu is comprehensive with many daily specials. The food is freshly prepared and tasty, and of a reasonable price. But the best thing about the Brigands Inn has to be the feeling of space and relaxation. If I didn't live 100 miles away, I would definitely be a regular!
