This gem of a place has been open for just a little over two years and I'm astounded I didn't uncover it sooner.
This easy-to-find restaurant in the 5th district of Vienna is an upscale restaurant that serves your meal in many courses. It's a bit on the pricier side, but if you're looking for a fancy place with flavors you would have never considered joining before but that delightfully surprise you, go here.
I snagged a very last minute reservation, and despite my last-minuteness (is that a word?) I was treated kindly and graciously. This graciousness was extended even when I and my husband walked through the door and throughout the evening as we ate our courses. The suggested wine pairing were excellent, and every chef listened to us babble out our culinary questions and answered each question thoroughly. So regarding the service: it is top notch.
I was delightfully surprised by the restaurant ambiance. I'm a visual person and the environment was out of a interior design magazine. Whitewash brick walls, black and white tiles, wonderful and solid wood tables and chairs encased in comfortable and soft leather, and hammered out dinnerware all await you when you enter. The lighting is also very nice. As a lady out on a date I appreciate good date night dinner light and Roots has that nailed that down. The food is in the spotlight and I was bathed in a soft flattering glow; my favorite kind of lighting. Also the bathrooms are unique! I won't divulge what kind of surprise you'll find there you just have to go see for yourself.
Now, regarding the food. Mama Mia. I can't remember every single dish but every single one was a journey of flavor and surprise in and of itself. The combinations were brilliant and very good! Who would have thought to combine sweet potato and artichoke?!? And pairing pork and grilled pear?!? Smoked Brie coated in spice and on a bed of sugar oil?!? Well they did and it was incredible. Their pairings and brilliance satisfied the food adventurer in me; this is the only restaurant in Vienna that has managed to do so. Well done Roots. Additionally all the suggested wine was exquisite. It brought out the smoky, the silky, the sour, the sweet of everything that needed to be highlighted in our dishes. I walked away maybe a little bit poorer but certainly happier to have been alive to try a place as good as this. If you're in the area and want to treat your taste buds to an adventure I highly recommend this place. read more
