My family and I have been regulars here for a few years now. Laid back, inviting atmosphere, and I enjoy sitting on their patio most of the year as well as posting up at the bar. They have a solid happy hour menu (one of the few places around that still does half off apps without changing the portions) and weekly specials are great, too. My favorite is their taco Tuesday. $5.00 margs (they make their marg mix in house no pre-made surgery stuff!), $2 tacos, and $12 enchiladas which is a healthy portion and very fresh! My go to for appetizers are their honey way wing bites and the eggplant! As far as entrees go I always rotate between their salads and the short rib melt. Sometimes I wish the melt had just a bit more of the horseradish cheddar (I have asked for extra in the past) but overall it is very flavorful. Their menu does rotate every so often. Many things stay on for a while but if you see something missing, that is why! The owners work extremely hard and are always present. Wait staff is always friendly, too. Roots calls itself a gastropub specializing in burgers, wings, tacos and a fairly deep craft beer list. When our first choice for an office lunch decided to close for a day, we quickly shifted over to this house with a reputation for food, brew and fun. One door closes and another opens. Such is life. The floor plan isn't large, and they couldn't put together enough tables to fit all of us, but we managed and had an enjoyable time anyway. I ordered a light meal - cup of Chicken Tortilla Soup and grilled Brussel Sprout appetizer. Passed on the alcohol. Service was efficient and attractive. While the soup was just adequate, with tomato and cream base and limited shreds of chicken and small thin tortilla bits, it had decent flavor and texture. The Brussels were all that they could be. Large quantity, nicely grilled with bacon crumble and light drizzled vinaigrette. Liked it, and shared it with another office dude, who liked it enough to take more. The bar sat along one wall, with well stocked back bar and a dozen or so draft beer levers for the crafties and a few national brands. There were a few people seated there who seemed to be satisfied with their view of the world. Didn't appear that couple intended to go back to work this Friday afternoon. They have a great selection of beer and delicious cocktails. The food is fresh and prepared well. Prices are reasonable. Service is casual and friendly. Love coming to roots! We're lucky to live just down the street from it and stop in from time to time. I always get the short rib grilled cheese because it is my favorite especially when paired with the poutine fries. Me and my boyfriend always get the honey bay wing bites and the dressing that it comes with is so good. My boyfriend usually switches up his order each time we go. He mostly goes for a burger but this time he got the pulled pork sandwich. He had a little trouble with eating it because it had a lot going on so he did have to use a fork and knife but other than that he enjoyed it! We've heard great news about Roots. Nonstop great news in fact. However, they didn't live up to the hype. The overall service was slow paced and it was just one thing after the other. ONE thing that was great...the food. A great restaurant experience is 50/50. Good food and good service. The latter wasn't great. What went wrong: -No plates or silverware given -Wanted a Ginger Ale...got a seltzer water -AC was either off or not working on 95 degree day -Soda we did get was flat -Plates we did end up getting were dirty What we snagged for food: -Wing Bites -Buff Chicken Dip -Coconut Shrimp -Pub burger (prob the best I've had all year...) I think we'll be back, BUT maybe chill at the bar rather than a table. Again, food was dope and if all came out hot. read more

A recent visit was kind of a bust. Our server was fine but we got the impression we annoyed her when we said we didn't want to order our food until our drinks came. Maybe they wanted to flip our table and we were taking too long, I don't know, but we didn't think this was an unreasonable ask. That aside, the food was disappointing. The butternut squash in the butternut squash hummus must be in name only as it was just plain and bland, not to mention missing the crispy chick peas and included roughly 3 pomegranate seeds. The meatballs were hard, the eggplant was decent but the bread that came with it tasted stale like it had been in the freezer and then reheated and toasted. The goat cheese and apple crostini had the smallest amount of goat cheese and was very lackluster in flavor. My final gripe, we asked for a glass for my mom's beer and they handed her a warm glass. I know it's not a big deal but on top of everything else, it was just another disappointment. Sorry Roots, we likely won't be back for a while, if at all. read more

This is my second time here this week. So pardon the double review. Night 1: Sat at the bar, good service. We ordered three appetizers, pork belly bites, calamari, and Brussels sprouts. They do their own take on them and they were all good. Calamari was fresh, pork belly bites were okay. For our main courses, I had the lollipop lamb chops. I really wanted the chicken pot pie, but the lamb chops were a Valentine's Day special menu. So I got the lamb chops. They were fantastic! Tender, succulent, very tasty. Accompanied by a mushroom risotto, my god! I didn't want to eat it all, but it was all gone. A member of my party had originally asked for linguini with clams, but they were out, so they got the crab stuffed salmon with tortellini. It looked great, and was indeed that. I sampled it (hey I was paying the bill ya know). Tortellini was good, I wasn't a fan of the sauce but the tortellini was good. The last entree was the fajitas. Because they were out of the T-none steak. Smelled great, chicken, steak, and shrimp. It was what to be expected from fajitas at a non Mexican restaurant. They were good. Night 2: Same trio of people. Sat in the overflow area. We waited about 10 minutes to sit, it's a Friday night, no worries there. We ordered some old fashions. Disappointed. Full of mini ice cubes, so it was way watered down. Just get a regular drink. I was here for the pot pie! Another was here for the T-bone. The other for the linguini with clams. No T-bone, but the filet that was ordered instead was really good. Tender, cooked perfectly (med-rare), potatoes were good, just an all around good meal. The linguini with clams, fantastic. Another dish all gone! No box needed. And I got my chicken pot pie. I saw it come out to another table and I was excited... I cut the crust open to this piping hot meal and noticed a surprise. Unlike other chicken pot pies I've had, it was not a pie! No crust other than the layer of dough baked on the top. Very disappointing. The filler was more of a chicken stew, with shredded chicken. This was a bowl of chicken stew with a piece of dough baked on the top like you would bake a layer of cheese on French onion soup. It tasted fine, just fine and not what I was hoping for. For the amount of time we waited to sit, then for the meal, not a good night tonight. read more

A mixed bag. Liked the vibe and the staff. Wife thought the Brussels Sprouts were great, but was disappointed with the Chicken Tortilla soup. While the broth was good, the chicken was probably not breast meat and was not to her liking. She didn't eat most of it. My son had the Ahi Sandwich which he liked very much. The big disappointment was the smash burger. It was as if they dumped a gallon of their "special sauce" on there which made for a very sloppy affair. It was everywhere. The burger was also too big for the bun so eventually had to finish with a knife and fork. Did a number on my stomach too. I'd probably try Roots again, but I'd have to be in that area. I hate having to update this to 3 stars but we've given it several visits and it just has been so downhill. Sometimes the service has been great but the last time it was just bad. We waited forever for food while all of the employees including our server sat at the table next to us got their food and were eating. The food isn't as great as it used to be, the cocktails are just okay. The tortilla soup was just a salt bomb of greasy broth. The goat cheese burger is still pretty good and the appetizers were decent but all of that didn't matter when it took so long to get our food and it was half cold by then. I asked for yellow mustard for my onion rings (they were flavorless) and got charged for "extra sauce" -- unbelievable. I literally laughed out loud. Server was pleasant but asked for beer recommendations and got "I don't really know our beer menu" -- is this a joke? Ambiance -- the place is LOUD. Maybe only 4 tables and a few at the bar and we were shouting. As others have mentioned, it seems that the staff is way more interested in chatting with locals than serving dinner patrons. It's a shame, because the actual burger I got, while small, was pretty good. We won't be back. Note: the business is unclaimed on yelp. I've been to this restaurant a few times before. It has a great setup with both indoor and outdoor seating. For the most part, the staff seems pretty friendly. As for the food... their Honey Bay Wings Bites are delicious. I've had some other dinner items that were okay. Mac and Cheese sandwich was excellent, but I had a salad that wasn't too great. However, this time I made it there for brunch. I was excited to be able to get the Honey Bay Wing Bites, but they gave me this very tiny container of dipping sauce for the wing bites. I can't ever remember it being this tiny in the past. When I requested another one because I didn't have enough, they charged me .50¢. But like I said, I was there for brunch, so this was also my first time having their pancakes. Not very good at all. Thick and very, very dry. Like ones that kids make at home to surprise their parents. And also for the pancakes they gave me one tiny container of syrup. I had to request another container of that too. Thankfully I wasn't charged .50¢ for that one. One pancake will suck the syrup right up, but they are so dry that you won't even want to finish them. This all just means that when I come back, to stick with the Honey Bay Wing Bites and get some fries because they are the best things on the menu... unfortunately, I'll have to bite the bullet on the cost of the extra sauce because it really brings a nice flavor to the bites. read more
