A small store with a very grand vision. Like another Yelper said, when you walk into Les Étoffes…read moreyou really sense that you are entering the store's world. The colors (black, rust, navy, cream), the layout, and the clothes themselves all go together. The feeling is warm and inviting, so you want to go explore all the pieces on display. I used to sell yarn and fabric, so I loved the different textures and materials on display, from a luxuriously dense knit sweater to an elegant silk blouse. The design of each item was trendy but approachable -- I am a jeans and t-shirt kinda lady but I saw things I would wear. So why didn't I come home with a whole new wardrobe? Price, of course, sigh. Les Étoffes is definitely a special-occasion boutique, and alas I was only sightseeing. While I was there, though, a young man was trying on shirts and mentioned that he was making his first L.E. purchase. It seemed like he'd been looking forward to that day for a while.

Throw in some Ray Bans, bean bag chairs, leather satchels, and graphic t-shirts and flak jackets (oh, and a few retro metal lunch boxes for good measure), and you have the gist of this eclectic, wonderful store on St. Denis. There's two levels, and the main street level has the lion's share of clothing and shoes. Vans, Converse, DM's, trendy flip-flops... My kid is a sneaker fanatic and we couldn't tear her away from this store. We loved how all the differently designed sneaks were suspended from the ceiling. Like, hundreds! Yes, shoes and sneakers are a definite draw here, but there seems to be so much more hidden around every corner. And the store is deep, and there's a downstairs which has a gazillion different backpacks here. I'm not exaggerating. A gazillion. What a fun store! Very unique and funky. And the staff here were super friendly, too. Bonus! This was my kid's favorite store in all of Montreal and, if truth be known, we loved it too.

Don't forget to connect with the dessert bar before you leave as well! Shawn is a great asset to the store and has a variety of his own personal creations to purchase and all for a very reasonable price. If you can, I suggest trying every one of his flavors he has that day. Make sure to come back if you're ever in the area again because he makes sure to update his menu periodically. My absolute, without a doubt FAVORITE shoe is the Skechers Winsor Moreno Black. I would buy them all the time and wear them until the soles were worn all the way through. Well, Skechers discontinued that shoe a few years ago and I could not find them anywhere. The thought of buying a used pair off ebay (eww) was a line I would NEVER cross. Anyway, after coming across a bunch of online stores that said they carried the shoe, but worrying me because they had really shady looking websites, I came across J Scherter's website. I did a google search and found that it was an actual store. That was a plus! Further google searches revealed that it was a family owned store...I love family businesses - Another plus! Then I saw it was in Canada. I would have stopped right there but they had my shoes....my favorite shoes! The price was comparable to other sites which were sold out, so I figure "why not"... They accept PayPal payments on their site.....awesome! I bought the shoes, and immediately received an email from J Schreter that the order was received and that I would get follow ups when shipped. I got the follow up the next morning with the tracking info. After that I got periodic PayPal updates on where the shoe was while en route. Fast forward 5 days and they arrived at my door safe and sound! The shoes were in their original Skechers shoebox and there was even a thank you note from the current owner, Steve Schreter.

I was actually pretty excited to check this place out, as it seemed that I was able to find some great tops and pants for the hubs by checking out their website. When we walked in, the vibe and the atmosphere seemed a bit negative - while the store itself was bright and clean, the sole employee on-site was a bit stand-offish. He was watching us like a hawk, and it kind of made us feel quite uncomfortable. The selection was also slightly limited, and the 'sales' corner in the back had one red sweater that seemed almost like a keeper, but the size was way too big. The hubs was not a fan of the store, as he thought the quality of the items were of cheaper material, and the customer service just left a bad taste in his mouth. I highly recommend in passing this place up and check out Frank & Oak instead for better quality items and to receive a more of a wonderful service! +stand-offish customer service - quite uncomfortable T____T +limited selection in men's wear +only large sizes available in the sales section
