Elissa will get you right! I'm super impressed with this salon! I wanted to get my roots touched up in a way that would be lower maintenance than a full on dye. Elissa was able to do a bunch of highlights and lowlights to give me that transition from my full dye to natural color to keep the color I loved, while helping me be able to wait longer in between appointments. The salon is super cute and boujee, the whole aesthetic is very high end. I love how the stylists help each other out and are all so friendly. The rating on yelp is consistent with my experience. I did not get a haircut here, made my first appointment, was excited to try the place. I made a mistake and confused the time. I called to the place ten minutes after my appointment started, told them I lived around the corner and could make it in ten minutes. They refused saying they were busy (no problem, my fault). They then asked if I could reschedule and I said fine but they reminded me that they would still charge me 45 dollar no show. They never called me asking where I was or I would have been able to make it over to the appointment. This cavalier attitude and rude service cost them a client and I will not be going there. If you are like me and liable to be late for your appointment due to a late night at work- don't go here. read more

I must say that Liz and the whole establishment was absolutely incredible. It was my first time there and I gave it a wing and last minute my original appointment was canceled, but they assisted me anyway, and Liz took me. She was able to give me exactly what I was looking for in my hair. The color and the texture and the blonde that I wanted were all done perfectly. Also, I have to note that the hair wash and head massage was incredible. They even use hot towels with essential oil to put on your head when the wash service ends. What a great add! TLDR: Somewhere along the line, Rooted Mane and Liz, its owner, became more about putting as many people in a chair as possible in one day, and less about doing hair properly or conducting customer service properly. And, as well-regarded DC metro hair stylist said to me recently, "They're known foil-queens. When it comes to color, Rooted Mane only seems to do suburban techniques on suburban women while charging downtown DC prices." OUCH. To start, was a client of Liz's from 2018-2025, and a client of Rooted Mane since its opening. First, the good stuff. I moved back to DC in 2018 after having lived in places that have a strong presence in the beauty/hair/makeup/fashion industry. I was hair-spoiled. So, I did my research, and came across Liz when she was a stylist at Smitten Salon in Arlington. From 2018-2021 or so, I only let Liz do my hair and was generally pretty happy with the results. When she opened her own salon, I promptly followed her to Rooted Mane. Up until then, I'd almost always found Liz to be pleasant and her technical skills to be on-point with a good understanding of modern hair trends and the needs of DC women. When I first started going to Liz in 2018, my hair was pretty much only getting a balayage, and I don't remember clients being super stacked on top of each other. But gradually over the years that technique disappeared from her repertoire (at least with me) and was replaced with a pretty standard highlight-foil operation. And clients were always double-stacked. I don't do hair. I'm not the expert here. But I assumed this was what was best for my hair and aesthetic results. Yet, my hair started getting beiger-and-beiger with the pretty standard highlighted-blond-hair look you see everywhere. During this time (and because I found my hair to be getting ....kinda boring looking), I chopped it off, regrew it, dyed it red, put in extensions, etc. several times over. All to the tune of thousands of dollars. But somewhere along the line, I noticed things started to slip. The last time I took my hair red, it came out with a purple-ish hew and was way took dark based on the photos I gave as inspiration. A relatively rare misstep that required me spending another 2 hours at the salon to correct. But it was when I transiting back to blonde that things took a negative turn. I made the appointment to "go back to blond" on the phone with their very nice receptionist. For some reason, the appointment was only allotted 30 minutes. Whatever, mistakes happen. But instead of being told Liz couldn't transition my red back to blonde (or a semblance of blonde) in 30 minutes and rescheduling, she proceeded to do a partial highlight and then basically gloss it some kind of brown-ish color with instructions to come back in 2 months. I walked in with red hair, asked for blonde, and came out a brunette. And got to pay $500 for the privilege, which included the tip for Liz, the stylist who dried my hair, and the shampoo lady. To be clear, my hair came out brunette after it had to be re-glossed darker twice, so as to avoid me leaving the salon with stark blonde streaks akin to Christina' Aguilera's Dirrty Era. It wasn't cute. Unhappy with the experience but convinced we could fix it in less than 2 months, I emailed the salon. The response I got was infuriating. I learned: it must've been my fault the appointment was for only 30 minutes, Liz did the best she could in the time (and even went over time! I should be grateful), I should also be grateful she didn't charge me more for my streaky-mess hair because she could have, oh, and Taylor Swift is a brunette (??!). The email ended with Liz recommending another stylist at a different salon. No offer to make it right. No offer to come in sooner than in 2 months. And that's how a 6-year long client-stylist relationship ended. On a happier note, even though I had to spend another $500 to fix my poor hair, it's looking much better now. I'm so glad I found a high quality salon in the Falls church/NoVA area! All of the stylists are amazing, each of them taking the time to understand what your hair needs are. I've gotten blowouts here and a customized cut and had wonderful experiences with every single stylist from Skylar to Arisbel! Yesterday, I opted for a hair mask and haircut and my hair came out smooth and healthy! They use high-end Kerastase products here which make for a luxurious treat yo self experience. Ashley is by far the best hair artist I've ever had the pleasure to work with. I've trusted her with cuts and colors for major life events- including my wedding and my the time spent with her always goes by in a flash because of her incredibly warm and kind spirit. I had two appointments (Jan 2024 and March 2024) scheduled 4 months ago (Dec 2023) and I had an issue with their website trying to cancel the appt in Jan because they require a 48 hour cancellation, so I canceled the Jan appointment over the phone because I didn't want to get charged since their website didn't work. I left a voicemail asking for their help due to technical issues. I received one cancellation email for the January appt (see screenshot below), but apparently both of my reservations were cancelled that day and I never received two emails about this or else I would have called and asked to keep my March appt. It's clearly technical issues with their website. I showed up today and the owner told me that I cancelled the appt and that it was my fault... in any business, you try to accommodate the client and not tell them they did something they didn't, which I explained I couldn't have done it since their website didn't work for me hence why I called and left a voicemail. They should check their records. This interaction was so disrespectful for me and put a bad taste in my mouth about how they treat loyal clients and she didn't it provide any solution for the problem..... honestly, truly bad leadership I've seen in a long time. read more

I'll start out by saying the haircuts I've received were amazing. It truly is an adorable salon with great, trendy, hairstylists behind the scenes. The reason I'm giving such a low rating is because of the customer service I received. It's clear they care about Instagram worthy haircuts only and not about their clients. I am very disappointed to have to write this review but, feel its necessary to give other potential clients a heads-up. I booked an appointment for a partial baylage and haircut with Natalie. Natalie was an apprentice and I came in for model services. I wasn't aware at time of booking that even as a "model client" that I would be exempt from all salon policy. I signed a waiver and I wish I had looked into all the provisions. As someone who paid $40 for their service and left a generous tip, I am very upset to be exempted because I was not a "paying client." After a mere 10 days, my hair is brassy and drastically different than when I left the salon. I contacted Natalie about my concerns and was notified of their policy exceptions and that if I desire a fix, I would need to book a "paid service." Notably this is contrary to what she told me during my appointment that if I didn't love it after a few days she would correct it. That is exactly what I did and I was met with the information I mentioned previously with no offer of a remedy. This was a beyond disappointing experience as I was hoping to use this salon moving forward and recommended but will telling my recommendations to book elsewhere. read more

Overall unprofessional and does not value client-stylist relationship/rapport. I got balayage by Kiana on June 16, 2022. I paid $380 for cut and balayage + tipped her $68. She is very passionate about hair and she did execute the blonde very well on asian hair. I was happy with my service especially because my long time stylist was just getting very busy and I wanted to be blonde asap for vacation. Fast forward to September 30th when I realized I wanted nothing to do with Rooted Mane. I got a 5:00PM glaze appointment which I requested for online. I showed her pictures to describe the brown I wanted (at this time, I was lighter than bronde, so I felt like going very dark was manageable and straightforward). She toned my hair over the sink and when she was done she immediately brought me to the register. I paused and asked if I could get a blow dry (btw an extra $60 is what front desk told me). She said "no, we can't because we are closing right now". I was sent out with dripping soaked hair! I was like ok fine and then paid and tipped her. But when I got to my car, my hair was the SAME blonde color as it was before and not brown at all!!! I was so disappointed so I emailed Rooted Salon (I never contacted Kiana directly) immediately in case they said its too late to fix. I politely filed a complaint about how Kiana made me FEEL rushed (because..she didn't even show me to a mirror ONCE. NOT once!). What if she did? Maybe I wouldn't have to come back and waste everyone's time and cause stress to all parties! Instead, Liz (owner?) replied " We do apologize that the toner isn't dark enough. Kiana didn't rush your service as no glaze services include a blow dry as stated on our booking site when scheduling." As a paying and respectful client, I feel like I should at least be shown a mirror before paying to ensure I was satisfied with the service. It was disappointing to hear the owner also invalidate me when I said I felt rushed. Eventually, I canceled my rescheduled appointment because I didn't trust them with my hair. I asked Rooted Salon via email (again, not talking to Kiana directly) to have my picture be removed from Kiana's insta because I no longer agree with rooted mane's values. They then restricted my Rooted Mane account without warning and blocked me on instagram. I am a doctorate student and rarely have time for self-care. I felt like the owners were dismissive, their policies clearly shows that they value $$$ more than rapport, and Kiana could have directly reached out to me if she actually care about her relationship with me. Do your research for this salon. Additional negatives: Their cancellation policy is so strict, they lack diversity on their social media (rarely any POCs shown...), and very confusing booking that may leave you with soaking wet hair or WITHOUT a haircut if you did not book it correctly.. Kiana described the brown I wanted as "warm chestnut" to dark brown. I attached a picture of me in the parking garage after the appointment. I found out about Rooted Mane from a former colleague. While I was not able to get an apt with Ashley, whom my colleague recommended, I was able to get an apt with Kianna. I went in for a haircut. My first impression was that the salon is nice and clean. I cannot stress enough the amount of time that the stylists spend on getting "Instagram worthy" pics. I do not fit that profile and definitely felt like it was a race to get me done and out. This annoyed me and I recently made an apt to get a haircut elsewhere. As my hair is wavy, I never wear it straight so I was not aware of the uneven haircut I had. Today, the hair stylist I went to pointed out that my former haircut was very uneven in different areas of my head, as he showed me in the mirror before he started working. I then remembered that super rushed feeling I had at Rooted Mane and it made sense because it felt so rushed. Do not go here for a haircut !!!! read more
