Hi, I turned 76 overnight last weekend and asked my sister if she would go play BINGO with me. She…read morekinda looked at my funny, but I think she thought about it for a minute and realized that Bingo is awesome and everyone should play at least once in a while. She got on her handy iPhone and found S. Elgin's Lions Club. Bingo on Saturday nights. 2 (6 board) cards for $11 with some bonus game options for a buck a piece. It was a blast. They have a full service bar, snacks, and food. They even have Pull Tabs!!! If you have been to Michigan (and I'm sure other states, too), you will know what I'm referring to. It's a great time for little moolah if you can control yourself and I cant wait to go back. But be careful....you should not yell "Bingo!" unless you are absolutely certain you have it.... ...I did this and it was incredibly embarrassing. :/ Also, they are very quiet here while the game is going. This is not a social event by any means.

My name is Jennifer S. and I love bingo…read more Don't ask me how it happened. I couldn't even begin to tell you when I first got the bug. It just sorta happened. I visit the South Elgin Lions Club from time to time with my sister. I toss on a babushka to keep my hairdo in place until my weekly trip to the parlor (just kidding, btw), grab some bottled water, snacks, my bingo dabbers and cash then I'm on my way. Doors open at like 5pm on Saturday - actually it might even be a little earlier, but the Lions have a Facebook page, so you may want to double check there. I've only been that early once and we got prime seating, but boy were the regulars mad at us. So I try to get in by 5:30 and get average seating upstairs. They have two bars - one upstairs and one downstairs. They have plenty of drink options and lots of sweet treats available for purchase. They sell some savory bites as well, but I haven't tried those. It's a lot of packaged bakery items to raise funds for the club which is fine by me. The mint chocolate pie last time was a nice choice. Anyhow, we usually pick our table. Lay claim to our seats and then go buy our bingo cards, raffles and computers. You can have a pretty fun evening on just a small amount of money. $20 could easily be sufficient, but I usually end up in the $40 range. It's still reasonable considering we are there until almost 10pm and don't go that often. They also have half price bingo once a month which is extra crowded, but totally worth it! The early bird starts at 6:45pm. Don't worry - a regular will explain it all to you. The first official game is at 7pm. This is officially not the time to chat. You don't want to miss a number on one of your boards or you could risk throwing the whole thing out the window. Also, please don't call, text or Facebook me when I'm at bingo. Service can be spotty and I need to focus. Don't forget, I'm trying to win big money here. It can be a lot of fun especially if you win. Grab your lady friends (or a strapping young lad) and head over for the evening. Maybe I'll see you there!

Everyone, My own…read moreimposed rules for any review: 1. Must visit at least three times. Two of which must be distinctly different formats; i.e. one weekday night and one weekend night. 2. Must order something unique each visit. 3. If they have any "signature" items on the menu, you must order a "signature" item at least once. 4. Ratings are based on a 10 point scale with 5 being average, which does not mean bad. What a score of 5 means is that the category meets expectations for that establishments format. Thanks. VFW - Elgin Location/Layout - 5/10: Located just north of Route 20 on the Weld Rd. The location is a difficult to get to if you are traveling from the either the East or North due to the route 20 reconstruction but there are signs guiding the way for those not familiar with the area. The building itself is a fairly industrial metal building but is kept clean and presentable. The dining area is an open hall with folding tables and chairs that also serves as the bingo room and meeting room for the VFW. The bar used to be located at the front of the VFW and was quartered off for use by members only, with a window access for those diners that either where not members or preferred to eat in the hall. They have moved the bar to the back of the building, which makes getting your drinks if you are there for food an inconvenience and is the furthest point from the restrooms? Menu - 5/10: The menu is very limited but serviceable. They offer a fish fry and fish sandwich, but also have other items such as burgers and beef sandwiches. Sandwiches can be had without fries or for an extra dollar come with your choice of regular or sweet potato fries. Service - 6.5/10: The service is typically friendly, especially at the kitchen. The folks are happy to help and are quick to both take and prepare your order. Food - 4.5/10: The food is fairly good especially for the price. Although, over the past couple of fish fry seasons they have opted to use a frozen cod instead of the fresh options, which means that there is no way to order the fish baked. Additionally, there are less fish choices than in the past since they are going with a prepared product. Additionally, sides used to include baked potato but are now limited to fries. The other items such as the beef sandwiches are generous and flavorful (they use Bari Beef) and is very inexpensive. Unfortunately, I usually come here, as I have growing up, mainly during lent and for the fish fry which is lacking quite a bit currently. Drinks - 4/10: The VFW has all the standard adjunct lagers and mixers at great prices in the bar area. Additionally, they do offer pop but do not offer refills which can make it expensive if you dine in the eating area. There used to be water coolers and coffee on Fridays but I did not see either on my last two visits. Overall Experience - 4/10: Growing up we always came to the VFW a couple times a year for a Fish Fry, not to mention for countless activities at other times of the year. Recently we have limited our fish fry visits to once a season since the quality and variety have gone down. We are still optimistic and have our fingers crossed that they will bring back the delicious offerings of years past.
