Great catering service. Wonderful food, staff and experience. I cannot say enough wonderful things. The head chef Megan is great and I appreciate how above and beyond she went to make us happy throughout our entire wedding planning process. Root Cellar is the best. read more

Let's talk about how magical Root Cellar Catering is and the party wizard/mastermind that is Marie Brawn. I was given the task of planning and putting on a corporate holiday event for approximately 350 people, with just about a month to prepare. Marie formulated a theme, based on my request to have s'mores, and her Camp G was such a hit that I'm still getting compliments on 2 months later. Not only was the theme perfect and expertly executes, but with a million other items for me to coordinate at work, Marie was able to take the reigns completely with setup and coordination of the party. She made it so that I just needed to show up! The menu created was perfectly on par with the theme. The food prepared was excellent and many folks went back for seconds. I've attached a few photos as proof of Marie's fabulous work. We will most DEFINITELY be using Root Cellar again. read more

I emailed Root Cellar about two weeks ago and got a call from Marie almost immediately after I submitted my inquiry but I wasn't able to answer because I was heading into a work meeting. I had my fiance call them back but it went straight to voicemail so he left one but never received a call back. I did receive a follow up email from Marie within the hour and responded to her questions and have yet to hear from her. Because I know technology can fail us, I made two attempts to follow up and connect again but still no response. We were really hoping to book these guys for the fantastic food options they have shown on their website, but I guess we're going to have to go with another caterer. read more

I had the chance of trying them out while they were at Ballast Point recently. It was taco Tuesday and they had a special collab menu with BP that day. Very creative! FOOD: -Bubba Taco - Habanero Sculpin cooked with grass-fed chorizo. It was okay but I think lacked flavor and spice. The meat was quite dry. -"Pale ale banh mi pork belly" - soft taco with pork belly in pale ale with vinagered carrots. Intended to simulate the taste of the infamous Vietnamese banh mi. My favorite out of the two tacos I tried! -Tacos were $9 for 2...came with tortilla chips and pickles. A little pricey, I thought.... SERVICE: -Quick and friendly. All in all, I liked their creativity with incorporating BP beer into their special menu items. read more

The best wedding food I've ever had! Marie is so creative, she came up with the idea of "dueling" stations for my wedding since I am from California and my fiancé is from Chicago. We had carnitas, avocado toast, deep dish pizza and Italian beef. My mind was blown! Not to mention the beautiful appetizers and the amazing service! Thank you so much Root Cellar read more

After a long, confusing, and overwhelming search for a wedding caterer that included many frustrated tears - we were rescued by finding Root Cellar. If you are looking for a catering team who will care about you as a person, not just view you as a moneymaking opportunity - go with Root Cellar. If you are looking for a caterer that goes above and beyond, and is happy to accommodate your requests/personal touches - go with Root Cellar. If you want AMAZING food and an upscale service team that elevates the whole vibe of your cocktail hour/reception - go with Root Cellar. I cannot stress enough how happy I am with Emily Walsh, and the whole Root Cellar team. They truly seem to understand the importance of a wedding day, and were so gracious and kind to me and my family. We looked at a LOT of caterers in the San Diego area for my wedding, and none came close to offering the same combo of high-quality food, high-level service, and stress-free interactions. On the day of the wedding, we didn't have to worry about a thing, and they even packaged up a little meal of leftovers for me and my now-husband to eat in our honeymoon suite. Hiring them was the single best decision of my wedding planning, I recommend them 110%. read more

They are simply "THE BEST"! They have provided catering for us on many occasions and their food is exquisite, their staff is lovely, and their execution and service is top of the line! We love working with them and having them cater our events! So grateful for this incredible team! They are not just a caterer, they are a delightful experience. read more

Hands down the best decision we made in planning our wedding was hiring Root Cellar to cater. We can't say enough about this incredible husband and wife team who made our wedding everything we could have hoped for and more. Food was in our top two most important things to us, as my husband and I are both foodies who appreciate quality ingredients and farm-to-table sourcing. Not only does Root Cellar pride themselves on this type of cooking, but they place their heart and soul into their business, and it 100% shows in every step of the process when working with them. We knew immediately upon meeting them and tasting their food that they had to cater our wedding, and we feel so lucky to have built a relationship with Jamie and Marie from that day on. Their attention to detail, their warmth and love for their clients, and their pride yet humbleness in their work makes them stand out in the sea of caterers in the marketplace. The food: everything was beyond outstanding! Our family style meal was plentiful, SO delicious and presented so beautifully. It was also scaled to perfection; it tasted just as great as our tasting (if not better,) when served to our 130 guests. It was indeed a memorable meal, as countless guests raved about the food that night, and weeks after. The punchline? This is NOT "wedding food"! This is one of the highest quality meals we've had in the San Diego area. Marie was also effortless to work with. She dotted our i's and crossed our t's when it came to event organization, rentals and working closely with our other vendors. She was a crucial asset to the team and made recommendations and improvements to areas of planning that were even outside of the catering world. Root Cellar delivered an event at a level way above anything we could have imagined at the wedding. The best part is.. my husband and I got to clean our plates at the wedding!!! We highly recommend Root Cellar to any couple looking for the highest quality food, and a vendor team who feels more like family at the end of the day. read more

My biggest fear for my wedding was having bad, dry food, and "wedding chicken." I didn't want to have one of those weddings where everyone suffers through a meal. Root cellar not only blew all of my expectations out of the water, but they smiled and provided amazing customer service too. Jamie and Marie were amazing from the start of our wedding planning. They customized a menu specifically for us beyond just our favorit foods. Im filipino and my husband is lebanese, they blew it out of the park with satay skewers, lamb meatballs, banh mi crostinis, and bacon lumpia as appetizers. The main course was served family style which we loved. Everything was delicious. For dessert, Marie handed out ice cream sandwiches while people were dancing. We got so many complients on the food and the service of the staff. I felt like the food was a representation of us and a meal that I would order at a restaurant on a regular basis. The presentation, the taste and the service were all perfection. Thank you Jamie and Marie, our wedding would not have been as amazing without you! read more

Root Cellar catered my wedding last week and Im still getting compliments on them! Food- Delicious! Marie came up with the initial menu after talking to me and we tweaked it from there. I hardly had to do anything. Waitstaff/Service- Super friendly and helpful. They showed up and set everything up and it looked beautiful. Overall- I had no idea what i was doing for my wedding and Marie walked through the whole day with me giving me pointers and ideas. She also recommended a bartending service and knows multiple photographers. Budget- She asks you your budget up front so they can work with it. read more

Fantastic!! We hired Root Cellar for our wedding and they were superb. Their prices are very reasonable. The food was delicious and fresh and the team, especially Jessica, was amazing to work with! She was extremely responsive and willing to shift things around when we had a few last minute cancellations, additions, and meal changes. The service at the wedding was excellent. We look forward to hiring them again for our future catering needs! read more

I had the pleasure of enjoying their delicious food at one of our goods friends weddings! So tasty! Everything we had was absolutely delicious. My husband especially loved their Mac n cheese bites. All the appetizers and our entrees were wonderful. Best of luck to a great and talented crew! We also noticed how nice the service was.. Well done! read more

My wife and I decided before planning our wedding that the food had to be amazing so we met with a variety of different, well known vendors to meet this requirement. Out of everyone, there wasn't a doubt in our mind that Root Cellar was a cut above the rest. From the initial tasting to the day of the event, the food was consistently delicious and they were able to easily accommodate the dietary restrictions of some of our guests. Our guest list had an insane mix of cultures and tastes, and they were able to meet every one of our needs regardless of the type of cuisine was requested. On top of all that, they handled our rentals for the event and worked with us to achieve the exact look we wanted at a very affordable price. If you love food and are slightly overwhelmed by everything you have to plan out for your event, then this is the easiest choice you will make. read more

Taco Tuesday is excellent in it's own right, but when paired with beer....the excellency doubles. Or Triples. Or Quadruples. If you catch my drift. Or it just slaps me in the face with supreme deliciousness. I mean, Root Celler Catering Co really hit it out of the park on this one. Bahn mi pork belly tacos! Beer braised brisket nachos! Please sir, may I have another? Not only are they serving up KILLER meats, but in the spirit of taco-y collaboration with Ballast Point, they're actually cooking with the beer they've paired with. Mind. Blown. Next Tuesday can't come fast enough. read more

The best catering company i could have ever hired. We had a dinner party for about 35 people. The food was delicious, the service was amazing and Marie was a delight to work with. They even stayed later than the time I spoke with them about and they didn't even think twice about it. We will def. be using them in the future. read more

I attended a bachelorette party where Root Cellar Catering was hired to host a dinner for the bride and all her guests. Not only was the food amazing but the chef and his team centered the food around the past and future of the bride-to-be by collaborating with the Maid of Honor. It was such a great and creative idea and you could tell the owners put their heart and souls into making great food and their clients happy. 5+ stars for excellent food and great people! read more

I do not have enough amazing things to say about this wonderful husband and wife team!!! Marie and Jamie catered our wedding July 28th of this year. Not only did Marie coordinate our wedding, but Jamie catered the French themed event. Marie was my wedding angel (coordinator) for the whole 9 months beforehand, allowing me to enjoy the entire process and stress about NOTHING! Marie made our special day, what it was - unique, elegant, and perfect! She even had a baby half 6 months before the wedding and still did not miss a beat. Marie is a young lady that is full of grace, talent, energy, calm, intelligence, and great connections to boot! She was extremely creative, which helped to give us a wedding day that was one of a kind and all our own. She gave us many money saving tips which allowed us to pull of a million dollar wedding for under $20,000. I did not have one single moment with Marie planning my wedding, that was not 100% perfect. Our guests raved about the whole experience, saying that is was the most beautiful wedding they had ever been to. Jamie was our caterer. He created a menu that was beautiful and authentic French Countryside. Some of our appetizers consisted of handmade rustic tarts (tomato, mushroom, etc...), Miniature Croque Monsieurs with with Bechamel Sauce, French Cheeses, etc. Our dinner choices were Boeuf Bourguignon and Coq Au Vin. Our guests said it was the best "wedding" food they had ever had. What a complement to the Chef! It tasted like dinner from a fine French Restaurant instead of a wedding that was mass produced. The dinner went very well with the French wines that we were serving too! I still cannot believe how blessed we were to find this wonderful husband and wife team. Between the two of them, we had every angle of our wedding completely taken care of. My husband and I actually went into Marie withdrawals after the wedding was over because we missed working with her. I would recommend these two to anyone! read more

Root Cellar Catering is the very best! Our daughter was just married in San Diego and Root Cellar catered a plated dinner which included the filet and the seasonal fish, Mahi-Mahi. Chef Jaimie cooked everything fresh on site and the food was absolutely spectacular! It's not an exaggeration to say that the quality of the food (for 115 people served outdoors) equaled anything we have ever ordered in a 5 star restaurant. We were absolutely blown away by the level of care. They also provided assorted sweets that were incredibly delicious. We just can't say enough about the company and their employees. Jessica was a dream to work with. Thanks to Root Cellar Catering for making our daughter's wedding truly an event to remember. read more

We used root cellar for our New Year's Eve party for food/ bar/ and a referral for glassware rentals. The food was incredible- everything looked fresh, was unique from the standard catering service, and tasted delicious. The presentation in the bamboo trays was beautiful. My guests raved about the food! The bar services far exceeded my expectations- Anthony was a true mixologist! Great job Root Cellar! read more

I was really looking forward to receiving a quote from Root Cellar Catering. Their website has beautiful photos, the sample menus look delicious and unique, and they have amazing yelp reviews. I filled out a contact form and someone reached out to me via email and we discussed the event. Two weeks ago I received an email stating I would receive the quote that day. Didn't receive anything. I followed up a week ago. Still crickets. If they were already booked or didn't plan on providing a quote, I would have appreciated a simple "we are not interested" note. read more

My husband and I recently hired Root Cellar Catering Co for our wedding on Aug. 9th, '14. Because we have had their food before, we knew it would be awesome. And boy did they deliver! Our dinner was so delicious. Many guests came up to us during our event to say how much they enjoyed the food, and my entire family gave them kudos in the days following the wedding. I was really pleased to hear my dad say that he enjoyed the food so much. He couldn't stop talking about the entrees! My favorite items were the custom fish taco appetizer (a little San Diego flavor for our out-of-town guests!), the seared filet crostini appetizer, and the beef braised short rib. I wish they had a restaurant so I could go back for more whenever I wanted! It's clear Root Cellar Catering will be around for a long time because they truly care about serving fresh food purchased from local vendors that are tailored to your tastes. The food is just THAT good. I also wanted to make a special mention of how easy Jamie and Marie were to work with throughout the planning process. I would highly recommend their services for ANY type of event. read more

We recently attended the wedding of a long-time friend's daughter. We were so impressed that I asked a server who had catered. I was not surprised when I came home and saw so many glowing reviews for Root Cellar. The food was as good as any gourmet restaurant, and the servers were the best anywhere. I also found out that Root Cellar handled the table arrangements and flowers. The setting was stunning, but didn't take away from the smiles and glow of the bride and groom. Everything was in such good taste (no pun intended). I am not easy to please. So my compliments to Root Cellar are well deserved. read more

You will not regret booking with Marie and Jamie! This was the experience we were dreaming of when we thought about what we wanted for our wedding. We are both a bit on the "foodie" side and wanted our guests to have an amazing experience, which was exactly what they got. From menu planning, to tasting, to the actual wedding, everything was easy and exceeded my hopes. Marie and Jamie put together an awesome menu from our favorite things, including mini California burritos, which were the highlight of my husband's night! We haven't stopped getting compliments from our guests about the food, and for good reason. The service they provide is professional and seamless, and if you have the chance, book them!! read more

Root Cellar catered a private event for a friend of mine. I'd heard many good things so my expectations were pretty high, but my GOODNESS, were they exceeded! THSE GUYS ARE GREAT!!! Root Cellar recently catered our 5th annual Oscar Party and with out a doubt - did an outstanding job from beginning to end! My first contact was with Marie...not only was she professional, courteous and a pleasure to work with, Marie was flexible and accommodating to all of our needs and requests. On the day of the event, I was introduced to Jamie (chef dad!) ...passionate & inspiring. Together they produced amazing food, that was perfectly presented! Raves: The Animal Sliders ( consumed faster than they could be made ), The Short Ribs and of course, The Ahi Poke on House-Made Chips! They also helped in securing a few Desserts as well - the Smores Pops were awesome & the Mini Square Cupcakes were a hit. I would definitely recommend Root Cellar for any occasion! Thank you both for making the evening a great success! read more

There are a ton of catering options out there. I'll be honest, I picked Root Cellar because their prices were reasonable for a plated dinner, but more so because they were actually RESPONSIVE to emails, unlike so many caterers you will deal with. With that being said, the food for Root Cellar was outstanding. We don't live in San Diego, so we took the word of our wedding planner that the food was actually good, as we never were able to do a tasting prior. Root Cellar was great about making some customized appetizers, which our guests still rave about to this day. They blew away my expectations for the plated portion of meal for the reception. The portions were generous and everyone (including the people who had the vegetarian option) raved about the food. Thank you Root Cellar for making our day that much more special! read more

Marie and Jamie from the Root Cellar catered our Oct. 5th wedding at Leo Carrillo Ranch last fall. The food was INCREDIBLE. People are still talking about the smoked gouda mac and cheese and peach bourbon braised short ribs that they made! They also did all the desserts and cake, which was not only delicious but really pretty too! And throughout the whole menu planning process they were such a pleasure to work with and accommodated all of our family's requests. On the day of the wedding, it was 80 degrees and I started to feel a little woozy right before the ceremony, and Marie somehow heard about it and rushed over with water and cheese and crackers! It was so unexpected and made me feel so much better! I can't say enough times how awesome Root Cellar is and recommend them to everyone! :) read more

I used Root Cellar Catering for our wedding on July 7. I could not have asked for a better company to work with! When I first inquired they were extremely responsive. We were able to book a tasting right away to get things started. They were the second tasting that we had done and I knew I didn't need to go to anymore after trying their food and meeting them. We got to meet the owners who are SO involved with everything - they're amazing. We loved that they are farm to table - they had the most positive attitudes and vibes I knew they would be easy to work with. My dad is an Executive Chef of 45 years and we will just say he is not easy to cook for or please. He had certain requests and they were able to do them with no issues at all. The food at our wedding was incredible - we received so many compliments! We had chicken stir fry served in Chinese to-go boxes with chop sticks, mac and cheese in mini cast iron skillets that they served and a taco station with shrimp and carne asada - all of which were incredible. They also made mini corn dogs as a late night snack and made the best desserts! They really went above and beyond. Their staff was amazing. They all looked so professional and were all extremely pleasant. From the chefs, to the servers to the bartenders to the owners being there - they were all amazing. We are so grateful for Root Cellar - they really made our wedding so special. We have already talked about hosting other events just to have their food again! :) read more

We hired the Root Cellar for a birthday party at the Skybox and they were professional and courteous. All of our guests raved about the food! I cannot say enough great things about the Root Cellar team!! My husband and I hired them to cater a small dinner after our wedding, and between the food and the service I'm not sure what was more impressive. My first contact with Marie was a little frantic on my side and she was nothing but calm and helpful, she set me up with her favorite rental company so I could get all the needed 'matching' place settings, wine glasses, and linens. They picked everything up for me and returned it as well. Jamie and Duvihn came right on time and set up and started cooking! They set the table and even brought a floral arrangement!! The food was to-die-for! They explained each dish upon presentation, the whole group was raving! Get the chocolate mouse with hazelnut short bread crust, and fresh whipped cream! Seriously, do it, you'll be in heaven! When they left, my kitchen was more clean then when they arrived! It was such a wonderful relief. We will most definitely be hiring them again, hopefully for our big wedding next year! read more

Without a doubt, Root Cellar deserves five full, fun, festive stars! From our first meeting, though all our correspondence, into the wedding and up to the last few minutes of the reception, Marie and Jaime treated us like dear friends. Root Cellar cares about their food, their customers and their quality. THANK YOU!! read more

I used Root Cellar Catering yesterday for my husband's 60th birthday party. This was the easiest party I have coordinated, thanks to Root Cellar, from beginning to end. We hired Root Cellar Catering to provide a luncheon for approx. 40 guests at our home in North County on less than 2 weeks' notice. Root Cellar worked with us to customize the menu, plan the logistics and table/chair rentals, and make the whole event as easy for us as possible. They were professional and courteous and punctually set up and cleaned up for our event. Root Cellar staff also assisted with serving our buffet-style luncheon and passing appetizers. Our guests really enjoyed the food [we came up with a variation on one of their lunch menus] the dessert selection and beverages. Overall, we would highly recommend Root Cellar Catering. Great food and attention to details--for instance, we had provided wine and beer, but they brought a nice beverage cart for serving drinks "just in case" we needed somewhere to put them, something we had not thought of. read more

Root Cellar is the BEST. They helped us create an amazing custom menu for our wedding that fit our tastes and the vibe we were going for perfectly. The farmer's market bar looked (and tasted) awesome and I lost track of the number of guests who told us it was the best cocktail hour food they'd ever had. Then came dinner, and more awesomeness! Perfectly cooked salmon, fall-off-the-bone short ribs, and roasted veggies. Root Cellar served all the food family style on platters for guests to pass and share which was a really wonderful way for our many out of town guests to meet and get to know one another. Marie and Jamie made our 225 person wedding feel like an intimate dinner party. For dessert, they made us delicious homemade ice cream sandwiches (!!!) and cookies and milk. All in all, a perfect meal and great service. But Root Cellar's amazingness goes beyond the food. From the moment we first talked to Marie she was so helpful and provided information about all kinds of details for our wedding, and served in a pseudo wedding planner role, which was above and beyond. On our wedding day she made sure my new husband and I actually got to taste and enjoy everything - bringing us a separate hors d'oeuvres platter, making sure we got plenty of our dinner, and coming to find us on the dance floor with ice cream sandwiches! We could not be happier with our choice to hire Root Cellar to cater our wedding. It also seemed fitting and very special to have a husband and wife team (an amazing team at that) cater our first meal as a married couple. We love you Root Cellar! read more

I highly recommend Root Cellar Catering. For our wedding last year, our biggest priority was good food (within a reasonable budget). After contacting a few other caterers that a) would not get back to me, b) offered menus that were not what we wanted, or c) would not let us taste the food we wanted to serve at the wedding, we finally found Root Cellar Catering. Marie was fantastic and easy to work with, she coordinated the table and chair rentals for us (including set-up), and would have helped set up table décor herself if we had not decided to hire a day-of coordinator also. She got us in touch with a great bakery (Elizabethan Desserts) for the cake and dessert, and was fine with us providing our own alcoholic beverages (they set up a bar complete with bartenders). Best of all, their food was amazing and they worked with us to get the menu we wanted. They also ensured that we (bride and groom) were able to eat food the day of the wedding (we only missed out on 1 of 10 menu items). Did I mention the food was great? I recommend them to anyone looking for a caterer. read more
