From the…read moreoutside, it's a smaller building but inside is converted into an amazing business with authenticity. I will start with the host and server we had. Both ladies were excellent, fun and very very welcoming. Nicest people we have met thus far driving from Nevada. Always smiling, not hanging over you while you eat, and extremely polite. The food was absolutely incredible. Over a week traveling with numerous stops, La Casita De Cortez absolutely comes out on top easily. Homemade food with passion behind it and generous portions. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted incredible. The drinks were also impeccable with a decent variety of margaritas and others. Stop here if you can and enjoy every second of it! You won't regret it!

The good things were the marinated fajita meat and fresh corn tortillas. Unfortunately the onions and peppers were charred and burnt black which meant the meat was way overcooked The outdoor dining area was nice but it was too cold for our parents so we sat inside. They didn't offer green chile salsa which is what our mom really wanted. Our server Elizabeth was very nice and seemed too busy but was kind to fulfill our repeated requests. Their portions of sour cream and side dishes to accompany the fajitas were skimpy. We had to always ask for more fearing additional charge after charge, but happily that didn't happen. Overall it was okay. I doubt I'd return.

When at Four Corners, you just have to try Navajo Fry Bread, right? I had heard about it, and…read moredecided we needed to stop here before leaving. Grandma's was closed, but this stand was open. They have quite a lot on the menu for such a small stand, and a lot of options for fry bread. We decided to go with the regular fry bread with cinnamon and sugar. The two ladies inside were friendly and got our order ready quickly. It was nice and fresh as they made it while we waited. It was extremely windy that day, so even though there were tables and seating available, we opted to just eat in the car and head back out on the road. The fry bread was delicious and a wonderful snack!

In fact, it's the only spot in the area to grab food. They got a picnic table where you can sit and eat, which is nice if you want to take a quick break. I tried the traditional fried bread ($8). You can choose your own toppings, either sweet or savory. They have options like cinnamon sugar, honey, or garlic salt. I went with the garlic salt one, and while it was definitely on the salty side, it had a great garlicky flavor that I liked. They also sell snow cones in different flavors, and sodas are $3 and water is $2. They also really appreciate cash payments. Service was great. Food didn't take that long to come out.

Esmeraldas, very interestingly, is situated in a former gas station with the gas pumps removed. I believe they serve most items the entire day, so we were able to snag our tamales even though it was only 8AM. There were a couple of other customers inside and it seemed like everyone only visits for the food and not so much for the groceries. I ended up having to order in Spanish even though everything on the menu is in English. It's not an issue though as the person working is very friendly and and patient. Half Dozen Tamale ($13) - They had four types of tamale available for purchase: Beef (x2) - This tamale is filled with ground beef and corn in a red chile sauce, lending a reddish color to the masa wrapper. The masa is a little on the dry side and crumbles apart quite easily, but it doesn't stick to the corn husk much, allowing the tamale to stay well together during the unwrapping process. The beef is pretty lean and isn't seasoned that much, so it's a rather mild flavor. Chicken (x2) - The masa in this tamale completely sticks onto the corn husk, making the tamale basically completely fall apart while trying to unwrap. This might be due to construction - this tamale has a ton of filling, probably more filling than masa. The filling is basically shredded chicken in a light green chile sauce, complete with chile seeds. Like the beef tamale, this one is also on the dry side. The texture of the chicken is very similar to canned tuna and sticks to the teeth while eating. It's very tender without any gristle. Pork (x1) - The pork is shredded well into almost a Chinese pork floss-like texture. Since we ate this later (not on the same day) we ended up steaming the tamale and I have to say that the reheating process really amps up the moisture levels and makes the masa succulent and the meat not necessarily juicy, but definitely not dry. Cheese (x1) - This one smells the best by far. The filling includes plenty of fatty cheese, giving moisture and a good mouthfeel, and is embedded with pieces of tomato, onion, and green chile. The flavors meld together quite well, and due to the extra moisture, this is the most pleasing to eat. I've had tamales before that are still very good even with lukewarm. These ones, on the other hand, have to be eaten fresh or otherwise reheated via steaming. With that being said, when fresh, the tamales Esmeraldas serves are just as the other reviews state - delicious.
