I happen to own a unique Subaru Legacy. I love independent repair shops where the owner is there every day at the front desk or in the shop. Josh usually answers the phone and knows Subarus well. When I go to any of the factory authorized dealers the service managers don't know Subarus, don't own Subarus, don't touch a Subaru with a wrench themselves. When you go to a specialty shop that is all they do from the front desk backward, talk and think Subaru. Factory authorized dealers hide their service departments. Specialty shops don't and you're always able to have something pointed out in the shop while the car is on a lift. Dealership service managers take a percentage of the repairs they can scare you into for too high a price. Roopair repairs for way less using factory authorized parts or better if you like. Josh has a hard job, harder than a factory authorized dealer. After 17 years he knows he must be honest with customers and helpful to build a long-term relationship. I admire Josh he is direct and honest in a most polite fashion. His sense of humor and honesty is actually delightful and colorful. His customers appreciate his consistency and management. I appreciate the quality of workmanship and dedication. I don't mind driving an hour for specialty service. My Outback had been making a weird clunking noise when I turned to the right. I took it to a general mechanic shop in UP who kept it overnight and they said they weren't sure what the noise but suggest I replace my 1 yr old rear brakes for $1200. When that didn't work I drove around determined not to go back and just find another shop to rip me off. Months and months later I finally decided to only see someone who specialized in Subarus and called Roorepair. I didn't even totally describe my problem when they said "Sounds like an axel." And they were right, they fixed it. The price was fair compared to others and they got me schedule & then out quickly. I had a good enough experience that when I was about to 200k miles and needed a tune up, I called them. I was quoted at $1400 and they offered a free loaner car since I'd be dropping it off overnight. Which was a huge weight off my mind of arranging for rides and/or uber. They were honest with me about recharging my AC (they weren't able to for that year) and said my car was in good shape and didn't need extra work, didn't try to upsell me in anyway. I've been going to Roopair for approx.15 years, as long as I've owned Subaru's. Josh is great, he's often up front. They're not the cheapest and not the most expensive. Roopair has been honest the whole time I've been going to them with excellent quality (repairs and service). They've told me when I don't need a repair and keep track of needed upcoming service. They fixed the AC issue on my Outback the same day I brought it in-and I didn't feel like I had to sell my organs on the black market to pay for it! In all seriousness, I took it elsewhere last summer and the other shop couldn't figure out what was wrong. These guys fixed it and it worked great. My ac compressor in my Forester seized and they gave me a really fair estimate for my repair. Josh was very communicative with me throughout the repair, which I appreciated. Also, free of charge replaced one of the relay fuses and even fixed a rattling noise that had been plaguing my car for years (I suspect it was a loose fire shield but never found out what they fixed). All that said, as long as I live in the Tacoma area, these are my guys, and I'll be bringing my Subie back for anything I need fixed. read more

I called this morning to ask about having a seatbelt that is pulled out and won't retract. My car is a 2016 Forester with only 66,000 miles. The gentleman I talked to informed me that seatbelts are warrantied for the lifetime of the car! I called the dealer and asked about this and they had to contact the warranty department(under 2 minutes on hold) and he was right!! I had previously asked the dealer and was never offed this information. This time I had the manual in front of me with that very valuable 3 sentence warranty in front of me!! I will be calling this place for future needs! He could have easily charged me to replace the part but his honestly will have me recommending him to all my Subaru friends!! read more

I called on Tuesday to get an estimate to fix a squeaky belt and Josh was able to get me in for that Thursday. They were quick to fix it for practically nothing and they let me know that my starter would need to be replaced. They were very kind even after my mom felt the need to call and bulldoze (still sorry for that Josh!) I don't know how I didn't know about them sooner! They specialize in Subaru's so it's no surprise that we would get serviced by them. After a few weeks of getting our oil changed at Meineke, my bf and I began hearing a weird humming sound from our car. We've never heard that sound on our car before and my bf suspected that it was the wheel bearing. Although Roo Repairs has amazing reviews, we were a little hesitant because in general, it's hard to trust mechanics. We decided to finally give it a try and visit them. We were happy that we did. As suspected by the bf, the wheel bearing was broken and we needed to get it fixed asap. I ended up bringing in the car by my lonesome self. It took about 4 hours to fix. I didnt feel awkward during my time there. They were so helpful; they even suggested places I could go to while I wait for our car. I was also pleasantly surprised that I paid less than the original quote. Yay! We will definitely call them again if our Subi needs fixing. If you got a Subaru, definitely give them a try. We were having regular trouble with a Subaru that another shop had done an engine replacement on and after it over heated, once again, decided to bring it to Roopairs for a second opinion. We were told it was full of stop leak which caused a hole in the radiator and would continue to cause problems and the car was now worthless. My husband could find no leak in the radiator so we brought it to another shop for a third opinion. The third shop checked it thoroughly, found no stop leak and no hole in the radiator. They replaced the thermostat and it's fine now. I don't know why Josh at Roopairs felt the need to tell us several complete lies about the car and try to trash another shop, but it was poor form not to mention a complete waste of our time and money to have the car towed in and out of his shop. I wouldn't trust someone who operates like this to ever actually work in my car. read more

Just had major engine work done on our '03 Forester because of a significant oil leak from the head gasket...we were quoted back in November, saved up for the repair and in June, the price was still the same! We did shop around but decided to have Roopair do the work because we've been going there since 2006. They replaced every seal and gasket, along with all the major components (radiator, timing belt, water pump, etc.). Man if i could give 10 stars i would. I took my car here because my C-light was out and couldn't figure out why, well i knew that the ground was mess up on it. After taking it to subaru and subaru not being able to fix it and quoted me 1,000 for a brand new light i decided to get a second opinion from Roopair. Dan took great care of me and knew exactly what i was talking about, after dropping it off Dan found the issue and rather than following the ground cable and making me waste a bunch of money, he created a new ground to the light and now they work again. Service here is extremely expensive, even more than the Subaru dealership. Would rather support a local business but the employees are extremely rude. Treated me as though I knew nothing about my car and were unwilling to look into what I brought it in for without also fixing a much larger issue which would be out of my budget. I've gone to Roopair for maybe the last 6-8 years for a number of issues all the way up to head gasket replacement. Diagnosis and repair has been first rate and their customer service excellent. Always eager to explain the nature of the problem and description of what needs to be done for the repair. The work done on the schedule they promise and the price very fair for the quality of service. A number of times I've gone in with a question about something going on with the car and them suggesting it can be ignored if I liked since it wasn't something that had to be fixed. I bought a 1999 Legacy Outback about 6 years ago and heard about Roopairs at that time. I cannot praise them enough. Great employees and the prices are reasonable. I have a friend who's son bought a Subaru and told them to take it to Roopairs for oil changes and anything else that may need to be done in the future. These guys are awesome. I had a problem with my Subaru making weird noises and took it to two different local dealers, both of whom charged me over $1000 and fixed other problems, but didn't address the weird noise. I tried these guys instead... they took the time to listen and rode in the car with me, something that neither dealer did. They immediately diagnosed the problem as a bad wheel bearing, then told me it would be $500 to fix- half the cost of the same repair at the dealer. The noise went away. I couldn't be happier. The only downside is that these guys are busy, so it took a couple of days for them to get a chance to fix my car. But they were very honest about that up front and I see it as a big plus that they have lots of customers. They've got one more, now- I'll be back here the next time something goes wrong on my Subaru. read more

I really want to like this local business but they haven't given me any reason to. The front desk guy is a mansplainer and lacks basic social skills- tough for a customer service position in an industry notorious for fast talkers. They then don't give you thorough feedback on the your car that they just had the hood up on. All in all, they make it difficult to trust the quality of their work due to the lack of transparency of their diagnosis. I'm sure they're competent, but as a customer I'd like to see some more formal paperwork re: the status of my car, other than the guy at the front desk telling me like it is. Am I supposed to record our conversation so I remember all the recommendations that are verbally communicated? How about offering a piece of paper/email with said recommendations/status of car/tires/etc...seems pretty basic for 2019. read more
