Have you ever noticed that everybody these days wants reviews, even before they've demonstrated what they can or cannot do for you? It's ridiculous. I quit doing reviews a long time ago, except for the VA. The VA people are great. I should have done one for Ron's Automotive a long time ago but it never occurred to me. Shame on me. Besides being extremely good at what they do, demonstrating what I wish would be more commonplace when it comes to professional courtesy, and just being so professional. Their prices are fair and honest, and that is exactly the aura of the whole establishment. Do I dare say it's out of place up here? It can seem like that at times, but no. Rather than out of place, it sets an example of how good a business can be run, and how good a business can be. I should have reviewed them a long time ago. I've never left without being impressed. I made an appointment to bring my Toyota Tacoma in with two issues: squishy brakes and low power. When I arrived at my appointment time, I was ignored in favor of the dude working discussing politics with another dude for ten minutes. When they finally took a break from that, I said, 'I have an appointment' and gave the dude my name. Without even looking at the appointments, he rudely said, 'no you don't.' I told him who I made the appointment with, turns out it was him. He grudgingly admitted I had an appointment. When I came back to pick up my truck, he said there was no problem with the brakes and the low power issue was just me not knowing how to drive a stick. I have been driving for over 45 years. Every car I have owned has had a manual transmission. I took my truck to a different shop. They noticed right away that the master cylinder on my brakes was completely shot and leaking brake fluid all over the place. But Ron's never even looked at it. All Ron's had to do was use their eyes and know it was a bad master cylinder. They did not. Ron's claimed that they drove my truck all the way down 62 to Morongo & back and saw no loss of power coming up the hill. When I picked up my truck, there was not enough miles put on it to indicate they drove it that far. They did not drive it that far. I took my truck to a different mechanic who found that the fuel injectors were dirty and the fuel pump was going out. Ron's could have diagnosed that with a simple fuel pressure test. I'm convinced that any good reviews for this shop are posted by his buddies, because I can not imagine anyone getting any decent service from this place. Horrible. Stay away. read more

I was hesitant coming here because they had a 3.5 star rating. Upon the recommendation of a friend, I first took my truck here that had problems after work done by another mechanic. They pointed out the issues and told me to send it back to my previous mechanic to fix. They didn't charge me a dime for their time even after I insisted. Wow, I was impressed by their principles. After that I took my other car here for a water pump replacement. They got it done quickly (same day) and on budget based on estimate. Definitely my go to mechanic now in the area. read more

Short Version: Best car care anywhere. Long Version: We took 2012 our Prius there and John told us the power booster needed to be fixed. What happened next was above and beyond anything I've ever experienced in automotive repair. John proceeded to research the issue and told us OUR VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT THE DEALER WOULD FIX IT! FOR FREE!!!!!!!!! THEN HE CALLED THE DEALER FOR US!!!!! He could have simply told us the problem, and we would have paid him to fix it. But he didn't. He went out of his way to do what was best for us, not what would have put $$$$ in his pocket. Five stars strictly for John's excellent service and communication. A shop to be trusted. However, the problems I encountered were that people were not respecting social distancing, and more than half were not wearing masks. This was despite there being a sign on the door saying not to enter without putting on a mask. I really like this shop, but did not feel safe in these circumstances. read more

I love these guys. Have been taking my vehicles there for some time now. After having been RIPPED OFF by dealership service, it is so nice to drop my vehicle(s) there knowing that I will not be OVERSOLD on repairs, that they will do what they say they are going to do, and they work very hard on solving complex problems. I had an RV with a tricky wiring situation related to the brakes/wheel axles. When the guys figured out they needed help, they referred me to Ace Alternator (whom I have also reviewed). Don't ever go to to Ron's auto shop! Their negligence could have killed my whole family and other people by causing a serious accident. My husband brought the truck in to have the breaks checked. When we got the truck back hardly any of the lug nuts had been tightened enough and were lose. One even broke off! Thank God my friend borrowed the truck and realized their mistake and he even found the broken lug nut in the yard. They were willing to fix their negligence as they obviously should do. That won't stop me from giving bad reviews wherever I can, warning people and turning them in. This is very serious. The owner should supervise his staff. I have used Ron's autoshop for many years, but after this serious mistake I will not go back. I'm glad and thankful nothing happened to us or anybody else for that matter. I pretty much had the same problem as Ann B. I had my car in there for over a month and a half. Two reasons why I had it there for so long: 1) So many people recommended this shop; 2) my car wouldn't move and I didn't feel like paying to tow it to another shop. Anyways, oil was leaking into the alternator. I told them AT LEAST 5 times that it was engine oil and Mike (one of the mechanics) insisted that it was power steering fluid. His reason was because the power steering fluid is right above the alternator. I pointed out to him that the oil was EVERYWHERE and that it was possible for the oil to be hitting the fan while the car was moving and the fan sprayed it everywhere...but I'm just a girl so what do I know? So they had my car for 3 weeks, they never called once to tell me what the status of my car was. I had to call almost everyday so see what they were doing and everyday they told me they were looking for power steering fluid. It took him 3 WEEKS to put dye into the power steering and see if the fluid that was leaking had any dye in it. SUPRISE, SUPRISE, it was NOT the power steering fluid. When I asked him if they actually looked for engine oil, Mike responded, "No maam, we did not physically go under your car to look for engine oil." I'm no rocket scientist, I'm not even a mechanic, but when something is leaking, shouldn't you be UNDERNEATH to see where it's leaking from?! Usually when things leak, it falls, right? ugh... My friend who is a mechanic in Indio told me to hook it up to a smoke machine and wherever the smoke blows, that's where the leak is. When I told Mike the mechanic, he responded, "Oh...I never thought about using it for that purpose." SERIOUSLY?! So it took them another FULL WEEK (WEEK 4) to do this and they finally found the source of the leak. Of course they never called and I cut it down to calling them every other day. The receptionist told me that they had to order the part and it should be delivered by Tuesday (WEEK 5) so if they get it early in the morning, my car should be ready by Tuesday evening...but if they got it in the afternoon, my car would be ready by Wednesday. Okay so Wednesday rolls around and I give them a call...the lady told me that they found another part they had to order so give them til Friday. Friday came around...car wasn't ready yet, would be ready by Monday. Monday (WEEK 6)...MY CAR WAS FINALLY READY! I asked them for the old parts and they handed me one part. Where the fuck was the 2nd part they had to replace? Oh...there was no second part? SO THEY LIED TO ME ABOUT ORDERING THAT 2ND PART?! Which probably means they didn't order that original part when they said they did! UGH!!! Oh it doesn't end there. The old part doesn't look broken AT ALL. I asked the mechanic what was wrong and he said that it was too short. Seeing as how this part is a genuine Volvo part, I'm thinking that Volvo should be responsible for making a faulty part since nothing was broken, it was just made wrong, according to the mechanic. Of course he didn't help me out with any advice because I already paid him! I demand a discount for the inconvenience of calling everyday, the lies, and the fact that I kept telling them it was ENGINE oil and not power steering fluid for 3 WEEKS! And if, in fact, it was a faulty Volvo part, I shouldn't be paying them at all, it should be Volvo...but somehow I think the mechanic was just lying to me again. DO NOT GO HERE FOR ANYTHING! Actually DROVE my 94 vette up to ron's cause the tranny was slipping left it there Fri they said they'd call me mon morning with a quote didn't hear anything by 11am so called to check status low and behold they said it died nothing to do with the transmission now they said there was no spark could b the distributor or ignition coil another $1,000 on top of the$2700 quote for the trans Well there was plenty of spark when I left it there fri What happened? Took my van in for a fuel leak, ended up needing the front end replaced, they called me up aand asked if I wanted the fuel gauge repaired because it wasn't reading the fuel levels. I said yes take care of it. So they supposedly fixed it from inside the tank, but when I got it back the gauge still didn't work, I called the shop and asked about it and he replied that it was a wiring problem and they didn't get to it ? But they charged me for it ! When they did the front end they didn't check the parts they needed replace it they assumed and ended up having to reorder the correct ones. The brakes were having issues so they re spun the rotors and said they did this and did that. At this point my van was in their possession for over 14 days , ( they don't work on weekends) so I called them again and asked what was the status ? They said that they can't figure it out and that the vibration in the brakes is still there! So I call a few days later to see if I can bring it back down to have the fuel gauge fixed right and they tell me that they can't get me in for at the earliest another week! They knew that I was planning on pulling a trailer for my move, I paid over $3000 waited close to a full 3 weeks and still have to pay someone else to rectify issues that should've been fixed by this shop.. real bummer... read more

I have used Ron's Automotive for multiple conditions on my Lexus SC430 and have always received exemplary service. I will definantly go back if I need some other work. I've had a timing belt changed because my car has over 100K miles, break service, wiring repair. There quotes are always spot on and the job is done in the amount of time they quote. Just to check, I asked a friend where they take their cars and was surprised to hear they use Ron's Automotive as well for their car repairs. Twice. I've had my car into Ron's twice. The first time, for two and a half months, to trace and discover the source of an electrical problem that was putting a 1/2 amp drain on my battery. Having worked on cars quite a lot, I understand that electrical problems can be the DEVIL- that is why I took it to Mike (who is the owner by the way- not one of the mechanics). But, with a shop full of mechanics and testing equipment this should have been a relatively easy fix. He did fix it, although not in a very timely manner. Still..... two and a half MONTHS!! I checked in every week or so cause lord knows there is NO WAY he is calling you to give you any sort of update on progress- but this is probably because there isn't any. Further, I am pretty sure he left my car open because when I got it back it smelled like cat piss, and I don't own any cats!! Anyway, this review is not about THAT two and a half months......its about the three months that he had my vehicle most recently. Well, fool me once shame on you...fool me twice shame on me. I should have known better, but I though I would give a local business man who seems like a pretty nice guy the benefit of the doubt. So, my vehicle would not start. Had it towed to the shop at the end of may. Every time I stopped by to see how things were going my car was parked on the side of the shop, inside a locked gate, and it never looked like it moved. Meanwhile, the shop is full of mechanics and cars coming and going (presumably getting fixed, but we can't be sure). After another two and a half months of run around, I finally show up at the shop one day and tell him that this is totally unacceptable, that I need my car, and if he can't fix it I need to tow it elsewhere. He explains to me that he only puts one mechanic on each car and that 'my' mechanic has been called out by the national guard..... wow- not my problem. That is why you employ more than one person. So, he looks me in the eyes and says, it will be ready next friday or its free. Really? OK, sounds like you are really confident it'll be ready....awesome!! The next thursday afternoon he calls me and says it needs a new carburetor, why it took monday, tuesday, wednesday, and the better part of thursday to figure that out one can only guess. Needless to say it was not ready on friday. The next week (middle of august) I show up to pick up my finished car and the receptionist says $439. I say no way, I had Mike's word it was fixed last friday or it was free. She goes out to the garage and gets him and he says, "You're right I did say that.... it was nice knowing you" and WALKS AWAY. And the receptionist says... "I think that's his way of saying don't come back"! WOW! IS HE JOKING? WHAT AN ASS! And that is the WHOLE reason I am writing this review- I can handle bad service since it has pretty much become the norm these days, but after all the waiting and run around, I was treated like I did something wrong for holding him to his word. I was always VERY polite and VERY understanding and above all patient. To be treated like I did something wrong is the highest form of ignorance I can imagine. Perhaps the good reviews came from locals. Consider yourselves fortunate, I suppose. We are not locals, just a normal family at the tail end of a well earned, long and happy vacation through southern California. When our 14 year old Buick's temperature gauge began to venture into "high" even on downhill and flat terrain, my husband knew it warranted a trip to the mechanics, considering we had a whole day in Joshua Tree and a 9 hour drive back to northern California the next day. What happened over the next 24 hours is nothing short of a venture into a second rate "Twilight Zone" episode. We were treated with inexplicable and outright hostility. In all our encounters with mechanics in our combined 88 years on this Earth, never before have we been met with such such deception and thinly veiled rage. We were ultimately not charged for the repairs they did make (they were unable to make all the repairs); my one concession to something they did right during this encounter; but this was not at our request. I would have gladly paid anything to have avoided the hostility we encountered. We felt, for the first time in our lives, targeted. Perhaps it was our Obama bobblehead on our dashboard. Perhaps it was the Burning Man sticker on the back of our car. We have been puzzled since our encounter with Ron's Automotive, racking our brains to determine what warranted such hateful attitudes from these folks. It was to the point where I felt we were literally in a dangerous place. At a mechanic's!!! Isn't that crazy? I think so, too. That's why I felt compelled to write about it. Look, I have no absolutely no vested interest in how this company operates. I live nowhere near the Yucca Valley. We have a network of great mechanics in our town. But I do have a duty to warn people of what we encountered. I strongly advise any tourists driving through to avoid this place at all costs. read more

I would not recommend this place. I brought my car in because the air conditioner wasn't getting cool. They said they had to replace a part, and ended up keeping the car FOUR WEEKS. I called 3 or 4 times, and each time I was told it was almost ready and that they would call me the next day. They never called. Finally after my husband called and got a bit heavy with them, they had the car finished the next day. The air conditioner still doesn't get very cold, and in addition to that, a couple of weeks after picking up the car we were driving it up north and the air conditioner started leaking on the inside of the car. This is the second time we've had our car taken here for transmission work. The first time it was there for almost two months. This time, it's been almost three weeks and it's still not finished. They are fixing the transmission problem that should have been fixed the first time... I have had to call back every single day for an update on the car and how it was coming along because no one ever called me back from Ron's when they claimed they would.. I was told the car would be ready at the end of last week.. It wasn't. I was told it'd be ready Monday, and it wasn't. I was also told I'd have the car by tonight, and we still don't have it. They are doing warranty work so maybe that's why they take their good old time. Nobody from this shop seems proficient enough to actually get stuff done. read more

Nightmare of overcharge for NOTHING. This place has done to me exactly what the other poor reviews claim. Don't be fooled by the positive reviews....the staff must create them. Delay then give some B.S. story and need more parts etc. I want everyone to contact me who has been overcharged and mistreated by this company. Let's get a class action lawsuit against these criminals. I am contacting anyone else in these reviews by email. reporting this company to the BAR and i have gotten a lawyer. Here is my experience. my subaru is not passing smog, so I took it to rons auto. they did smog test and said it needed a new carb and that a successfully new running carb would make it pass smog. it took 4 weeks to get the part only to find out it was the wrong car part. So they ordered the right one "supposedly". they said they replaced the carb but it was still not passing smog and that it is so close to passing all it needs is a catalytic converter which is another $375 on top of the $1000 they are already charging us. we did our research on rons auto and discovered the scam they are pulling. he asked to see the old carb. and they said they sent it off and don't have it. he looked at the carb and told me it's the same one that's been in there. my husband asked the mechanics what is going on. they said the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, my husband asked why they couldn't figure that out from the past 5 smog tests before the carb. was replaced. the mechanic said " well, the old carb was running so good we didn't know the cap needed to be replaced" , anyone else who has been conned by these assholes contact me at unclesam704@yahoo.com. they never changed the carb they won't show us the receipts. they don't have the old parts. they are lying and have not done anything to better my car. it has just been sitting up there with no attention and they are making up fraudulent bills to charge us. contact me ASAP. This place is incredibly slow and they don't do the job right. I tried to get an alignment done and the steering wheel is crooked and they still haven't fixed it. My car sat there for over a month and nothing got done to it when I took it there for a fuel pump. I had a few things that I needed to get done and in the end only one thing got done poorly. When I picked up my car it still sounded terrible and I have no idea what was going on with it. They are slow and if you don't call them constantly they will never finish the work that you want them to. I will never take any vehicle of mine there again it was that bad. read more

These guys are great. I took my daughter's Volvo in and told them she was questioning her brakes. She's a teenager and doesn't have much experience with cars. I told them she probably needed new ones. They checked it out, took off wheels, ran tests, test drove it several times and came back saying "Nope. All is well, use up the pads you have and later on we can deal with old rotors." They could have sold me on an unnecessary $400 brake job, but didn't charge me a dime. They also gave me a lift to and from work (close by...). I will DEFINITELY be back with any of our 4 cars. Honest is hard to find. Professional, and the waiting room is nicer than my dentist's office! Nice guys too. read more

What a disappointment, I made an 8am appointment, a week in advance, to have my car smog tested. When we arrived a few minutes early, another customer was already there and the desk person was helping him, no big deal. When it was our turn he took our paperwork, went out to the car then came back and informed us that it could be 1 to 2 hours before he could get to it. We could wait or he could fit us in in a week and a half! He was alone at the desk and the only one who could run the smog testing equipment. He said it in such a way that informed us that the shop obviously had enough business that he didn't need ours. Never in shop...just outside the whole time bavk yard of shop)..After excuse after excuse why they couldn't get to it(usually employee related)..i went there to pick up and take to another shop...My 4runner wouldn't start(i had never had a starting problem...) I open hood...and my usually clean egine compartment was rusty and dirty) Owner wanted me to pay him $65.00 (fee).and since there was no work done at all...i refused...so he tells me i have 5 minutes to drive it off his lot(three weeks it sat outside...never being worked on...)...So naturally he( owner refused to help start it)..i called a friend...jump started it and...I WILL NEVER EVER RETURN.... read more

Always get good service when we go to Ron's. Mike and his crew are very helpful and make sure that they provide a full explanation of the issue and a resolution to the problem. I usually know when something is not right with my car and they take good care of it. I have used a couple of other shops in town and they were basically worthless. Poor quality work and lied to me or treated me with indifference because I am a woman. Hate the "eye roll" reaction and attitude of "yeah, like she knows what she's talking about..." Since I grew up around cars, I have more than a working knowledge of cars and can well figure out what's wrong with my car before I take it into the shop. So I appreciate the good attitude and treatment that my husband and I get at Ron's. John, has been a great addition to the front desk. Friendly and always willing to help. I wish I could give them less than zero stars. Absolutely THE WORST MECHANIC SHOP AROUND. I'm a disabled aircraft mechanic and brought my car to Robs auto.. needed them to finish a rear diff and gear swap project that I started and was unable to finish due to my injuries. Quotes me $175. Has my car for over 3 weeks, calls me today and tells me he can't work on my car for the quoted price and it's now more than tripped.. minimum of $600, and had already called and got a quote from a drive shaft shop near by... Funny how his quote of $600 was $100 more than the drive shaft shop. AFTER 3 WEEKS... I explained in full detail of what I needed done and still nothing had changed.. he clearly just didn't want to do the job.. this is a pathetic excuse for a shop. Why couldn't this have been down 2 or 3 weeks ago?? Mike on the phone was completely unhelpful and downright rude and completely did not care that he made a disabled person wait 3 weeks to turn around and try to screw me out of more money and not help at all with my car.. how can someone run a business like this? The staff and Mike included were talking trash about customers and their cars including the old red Cadillac owner who is "cheap and clueless" and "won't do what he wants him to do" and he "wastes money on stupid emblems and things that he shouldn't". I should have known better, they were recommended also.. absolutely terrible... Do yourself a favor and call someone else you'll be happy you did and probably save a TON of money in the process.
