Because the procedure was expensive and not covered by my dental insurance, I decided to do more research and get additional opinions. I found Dr. Andrew Lum online, and was impressed by his credentials and very friendly office assistant, so I scheduled a visit in mid July 2026. Dr. Lum performed a periodontal evaluation and gave me a treatment plan that included two osseous surgery procedures. His diagnosis and recommended treatment were consistent with the other periodontists I visited, which gave me confidence that the treatment recommendation was reasonable. The main difference was cost. Among the three periodontists I consulted, Dr Lum office's quote was the most reasonable, is consistent with the bay area average cost for this particular treatment. I asked whether there was any flexibility in pricing, and the office did offer a discount, that help me a lot more. Overall, I appreciated Dr. Lum evaluation and explanation. My lesson from this experience is that patients should consider getting more than one opinion and comparing costs, especially for procedures that are not covered by insurance. Each evaluation cost about $150-$195, but I think it was worth it. Dr Lum has performed many surgery procedure like the one I needed. In addition, his office assistant is extremely helpful, timely, and respectful. I am looking forward to have Dr Lum to do the treatment for me. I will update the experience after the surgery.

I actually didn't feel like I need to speak to my dentist as she explained everything to me and said the same things he has said to me. She recommended a product to try to help in the meantime. Dr. Warren Lee, who I had finished my orthodontic treatment with in February 2012. He had noticed that I had gum line recession and recommended I see his colleague, Dr. Wang. Dr. Wang is patient, skilled, and thorough. Alongside her periodontal work, she advocates for preventive oral hygienic care. During our consultation, she did the red dye demo with me to demonstrate the benefits of proper brushing and flossing. That's more than my actual dentists have ever done for me! The dental office is shared with another general practice dentist. Sophia, the receptionist, is incredibly congenial. Before our consultation, she answered the many questions my dad and I had regarding cost and insurance coverage. The dental assistant Audrey was also amiable and cheerful. The consultation cost a bit (no more than $50) because Dr. Wang needed digital x-rays of my teeth. The gum surgery graft cost me $1400 per tooth, but my insurance covered a significant portion, fortunately. Also, there's no charge for check-ups--only for procedures. My periodontal graft procedure in summer 2012 went very smoothly. I vaguely remember watching her slice open my palate to extract a piece of self-regenerative tissue to place over my exposed tooth. Recovery took a few days, and I had to be very careful when flossing. But I'm happy to say that my tooth's new gum is doing fantastic! :B Just a note: she only practices on Wednesdays and Fridays. Plan accordingly! So, learn from my mistakes, and always use a soft-bristled electric toothbrush. Or pay the price...LITERALLY.

This review is for the office staff…read more When I first scheduled my appointment, I was told they would check with my insurance to confirm whether there would be any out-of-pocket charges. I received no follow-up until the day before my appointment, so I called to reconfirm. I was reassured that I had nothing to worry about -- that my general cleaning and check-up would be fully covered by insurance. On the day of my visit, right before the x-ray, I asked again if there would be any out-of-pocket cost. They had me wait about 20 minutes in the x-ray room before returning to confirm that it would be 100% covered. Based on that assurance, I went ahead with the procedure. Two weeks later, I received a bill for the x-ray...!! When I called to ask about it, I was told it was ultimately my responsibility to understand my insurance coverage. But as a patient, there's no way for me to distinguish between a "basic" or "preventive" x-ray -- and I relied on the office's guidance. To make matters worse, the bill they sent had my name spelled incorrectly. That kind of error, along with the misinformation, does not inspire confidence. I also wonder why a non-preventive x-ray was even billed during a routine cleaning appointment. If this was just a standard check-up, why was the x-ray categorized in a way that isn't considered preventive and therefore not fully covered? It's not about the amount of the bill -- it's about the lack of reassurance, accountability, and transparency. The doctor and dental hygienist were just okay, but after this experience, I don't feel comfortable coming back.

He said everyone in the office is very nice and their cleaning is excellent. My dad is very critical and when he told me this I decided to book myself an appt. She uses text to communicate with me and I love it! I didn't know how to see if I still had coverage after I retired and she said she can call for me. She gave me the run down on my plan and she also booked my appt. Dana the dental hygienist is one of 3 in the office. She did an excellent job cleaning my teeth.
