I never feel rushed during appointments, and she genuinely cares about doing what's best for you--not upselling unnecessary treatments. The office is clean, modern, and well run, and the staff is friendly and professional. Appointments run on time, which I really appreciate. Worst dentist ever, she only cares about money! and she never numbs my tooth correctly.

Everything from the other reviews talking about recommending overpriced items and shady billing practices is true. This dentist has been practicing for 20 years according to her website but somehow when my insurance gave her the answer that one of the services had a discount, she insisted she needed to be paid for that service somehow which meant REBILLING it as something else in order for the insurance to grant payment. My yearly maximum was already met which meant it came out of my own pocket. How someone practicing for 20 years can't get their billing straight is beyond me and seems incredibly shady. Whatever, maybe it was truly a mistake right? So next visit, I come back for some fillings and let her know that I was still having some mild pain in the tooth we had done a root canal/crown on last time. Upon hearing this, she freaked out and said she couldn't do the fillings (that I had put off until the new year so my yearly max could reset, so already been waiting months for this) anymore and that I had to go see a different endodontist to see what was wrong with the tooth before she could do the fillings. I told her I've been through this whole thing before. I have one implant already that had 2 failed root canals and I think I am just a poor candidate for root canal since they rarely seem to work on me. No big deal, I'm mentally prepared if I happen to need another implant down the line. I'm more concerned about my mouth as a whole and putting off fillings that have already been put off for months seems unwise in exchange for a tooth that is likely a goner already. Upon hearing this, she told me if I felt that way I could find another dentist to start on the fillings now. So I went to her referred endodontist and he confirmed exactly what I had known deep down, is that I'm likely just a poor candidate for root canals due to the genetics of my roots having multiple connected canals that are difficult to treat. I told him I'd rather not retreat the tooth at this time due to my past experiences and he said that was fine. Went home from this appointment, scheduled a new appointment with a new dentist and canceled my future cleaning with Ms. Chen. I was content to leave our story at that, but later in the week I received a message from her asking how I was doing and confirming she received the report from the endo. I didn't respond, but a few days later I received a CERTIFIED letter of "Termination of doctor/patient relationship". This is something I've never seen in my entire 40 years on the planet. Much Googling explains that it's usually reserved as a last resort for patients who refuse to follow medical advise or are abusive towards staff etc. etc. Here's the kicker though, it was postmarked the EXACT SAME DAY she sent me the message asking how I was doing. So my best guess is she sent the message to me, then one of her staff alerted her to the fact that I had canceled my next cleaning and she got miffed about it so it became a "You can't fire me, I QUIT" type of 'getting the last word' scenario. I did everything she asked me to, including buying one of the expensive electric toothbrushes she insisted was better than the caveman manual toothbrush I've preferred for years. I was never abusive to anyone and was incredibly calm and patient through many frustrating experiences, including during a procedure where she gave me practically 10 tiny shots of novocaine over the course of 45 minutes. She insisted this was the best and safest way to do it. I've been going to dentists my entire life and never had to sit that long to wait to be numbed. Her style is very high strung and afraid of something going wrong. She had prescribed me 5mg valium for the root canal and forced me to call my dad to come pick me up even though I've driven on benzos plenty of times in my life. It's not like she gave me propofol or something... Oh and I couldn't call an uber because the uber driver might do something to me (her words). She also talks down to her staff constantly which caused a lot of second hand cringe for me. Nothing they do is ever up to her insanely high standards, but the staff are all incredibly sweet. Lastly, she was bashing one of my previous providers because he didn't have 50 million 5 star yelp reviews. I told her yelp reviews don't mean everything, but since she seems to think they do, here's another one for the books. UPDATE: New dentist found absolutely no cavities and no reason to do any fillings or replacing of fillings (same as my old dentist before Ms. Chen). Thank god I got away from this woman when I did... As other reviews have noted, Dr. Chen will always tell you there's lots wrong with your teeth and is always pushing the most expensive treatments. You need to use this $200 toothbrush, you need to use $10 (per roll!) floss (that breaks apart in my teeth), the mouth guard from your last dentist is trash and Dr. Chen would know, she spends $5k on her mouth guard. I tried listening to her for longer than I'd like to admit and spending $$$$, but I'd come in for my general checkup and get asked if I was doing the same XYZ mentioned last time. Shouldn't you be able to tell? If not, what am I spending all my money and time on? Another thing, I've never been able to make a single appointment here without later getting a call about changing the time, even when the appointment was made only a week in advance. There's one more interaction that I'm still concerned about, but don't want to throw around large scale accusations without being sure. I've been going to Dr. Chen for a few years now, always receive great care every time. My annual cleaning is done very gently by one of the team member. Also, I want to especially highlight the visiting doctor they have who specialize in wisdom teeth removal. He did my surgery in the most streamline, pain-free way possible. Beside the anesthesia shot pain, I didn't feel any other discomfort, even during recovery it wasn't painful. It was far beyond my expectations in all aspects. The surgery was throughly prepared and communicated before hand, speedy process, professionally executed, stress-free with only minor discomfort throughout the whole process. I had a traffic accident last year. As result, I broke three of my upper front teeth. I spent a half hour searching for the broken pieces at the scene. Later, I was noticed by the ER doctor that there's no use for those pieces anymore. For a while, I thought I would never look same again. My son went to this dentist for dental cleaning. And (to my suprise) was told my son has ten teeth with cavity. My son just had dental cleaning with another dentist 6 months ago; and was told about minor cavity that he will monitor. So we proceeded to have them fixed with Dentist Chen. After fixing 8 teeth, we feel the quality of work has issue. Then stopped doing the last 2 teeth for cavity filling. Later, we went to another dentist for cleaning and check up. I specifically ask about any cavity (because there should still has 2 teeth with cavity per Dentist Chen's checkup), and was told there is no cavity. This makes me feel Dentist Chen likes to do unneeded work to get more profit. The more than 4 stars rating I observed does not match up my experience with this doctor. read more

Rude dentist and with mediocre service. Had a deep cleaning at this place, worse than any other deep cleanings I had, take more time to recover. Moreover they always try to charge you more by - Doing extra X-rays - Billing 2 times more than the original estimate - Telling you do some useless things - Hide information about your insurance I booked a cleaning and they send me pre-claims on additional fillings without my knowledge. And after I arrived, they don't want to do the normal cleaning and tell me my insurance would not cover it. And waste my time. When confronted, they simply blame everything on your insurance and you. I also found out later they are not in-network dentist which means I payed two times more than I should on top of the two times additional charges. And they never told me anything about it. They try to charge cancellations fees and not once went over their cancellation policy and Dr Chen has no care in the world to rectify issues regarding miscommunication by her staff. Bad experience with the whole office. They are untrusted and inconsistent on everything that can make money from you. The doctor is ok although some uncovered and unnecessary service is added to my treatment plan. The doctor said she CAN'T do filling before deep cleaning, so she required me to do both. But the front desk said I CAN do filling first this year to at least use up all my insurance benefits. They said inconsistent things just wanted me to spend money there, and makes me feel I should get a second opinion from other doctors. The front desk will keep pushing you for scheduling the next appointment, and you will have a tough time if you want to get your X-rays from them. I asked her to send my X-rays to my email address. She was always finding different excuse(someone else said she is not in office today, but she actually was there after I got angry with them. Then she said she misspelled my name before, which is ridiculous since she never asked for my name and identity before. (It's worth noting that I literally made a Yelp to make this review.) I have been seeing Dr. Chen as my dentist for 5 years now, and I plan on continuing for as long as I can. The office is Mandarin-Chinese friendly and offers a relaxing and comfortable setting. I used to hate going to the dentist and experiencing lobby room anxiety before getting my teeth drilled into. I don't share this feeling of dread when it comes to Dr. Chen's office. It's more of a "I'm looking forward to working with someone who's going to help me take care of my teeth!" feeling. This is probably because I trust Dr. Chen. I believe that trust is a major factor when it comes to choosing any sort of healthcare provider. Dr. Chen critiques her own work and is always focused on improving--a quality many professionals lack. In addition, Dr. Chen and her assistants are always very keen to ensure their patients' optimal oral hygiene in the long run. I remember them going over which electric toothbrush would fit best for my needs for my transition from high school to college. At the time I thought it was hilariously excessive, but now I understand how it reflects their level of service and dedication to the patients' oral health. (I still use that toothbrush to this day because it's A+) Lastly, the office not only gets the job done and takes care of your teeth, but also fosters an environment that makes it easy to communicate and feel at ease. At first, I thought this dentist was okay but then I started to see that she just cares about money. I got a cleaning done and she would use the tool to dig at the roots of my teeth. When I held up my hand and made a small noise to let her know this was sensitive and uncomfortable, she did not stop but just kept going. She did this to me several times. I have a gum recession issue too. Also, she would advertise floss and toothpaste for me to buy from her when I had no problem with the ones I had. Then when I mentioned a certain tool was harder for me to bear than the other ones, she lectured me about her practice and how she's not trying to rip me off and has my back when that is questionable. Now I have teeth that feel somewhat loose from her digging at my roots that were already worn down. This dentist charges you for unnecessary tasks included in a procedure to increase cost. In reading the reviews, I must say that I am not completely surprised. The negative reviews seem to be people who felt the Dr. wanted to "up-sell them" more stuff. Of course, I want my dentist to be straight with me on the good, bad and ugly of my mouth. Some of the bad and ugly will take money to address, but I don't want ignore it. My experiences with Dr. Chen and her staff have been nothing but positive. Dr. Chen was practical and thoughtful when explaining options to me. The two things most important to me in a dentist are competency (experience and training) and bed-side manner (particularly because, like many, I am uncomfortable being in a dentist's chair...although theirs gave me a massage!). I have been coming to this office for more than 20 years. Dr. Yvonne Chen took over Dr Walter Chow's practice for a few months. She remodeled the old office and looks like she renewed the office management software. Everything looks better, newer and even the staff is more efficient and more friendly. Her staff are extremely friendly and helpful!! I had a crown came out before my overseas vacation. Dr. Chen helped me to put it back and she even gave me a glue package for me to use for emergency repair if the accident happens again during my trip. She even taught me how to DIY for a quick fix. The next visit after my trip, Dr Chen thought that I needed to visit a root canal specialist. She even walked me to the specialist with my chart so that I could get the service immediately. I've actually been coming to this specific location for most of my life but it used to be very bland and very uninviting...but once Dr. Chen took over she completely re-vamped the place and gave it a much needed and up to date look. I've been coming to Dr. Chen's office around five years. It is located near Washington Hospital in a small plaza. It can be difficult to find parking right in front of the office, but there is plenty more around the side. There is a small, brightly lit waiting room with a couple couches to flip through the mags or watch the large TV. This morning I arrived on the dot for my scheduled appointment, but I guess a other people wanted to get the turkey and cranberry out of their teeth too. I waited about eight minutes before I was seen. I think Eva is the name of the dental assistant that does the routine checkups. She is friendly and shares amusing stories while you have three things sticking in your mouth. I remember when I first started coming in, she used to talk to me like a grade schooler. Dude, I'm old enough to drink! I was happy she dropped that tone the next few visits, and it's not a problem anymore. Yvonne is also very nice and down-to-earth, and seems genuinely interested in what's going on in my life. She understands that some people can't be bothered to do everything a dentist would want, and will suggest reasonable compromises between dental hygiene and convenience. When it's not busy, Dr. Chen sometimes teaches interesting tidbits in dental anatomy, since she knows I was a bio major. As for the procedures themselves, they are good about asking you if you are comfortable, and are efficient with time. Normal checkups take less than 45 minutes. When you're done, they will hand you a goodie bag and arrange your next appointment. They accept card, which is nice to rack up those sweet cash back points. They are very persistent that you make your appointment, and will send reminders by email and text. I like it because I'm forgetful, but it might be annoying for others. This is my first visit with Dr.Yvonne Chen and staff, and also the best experience I have ever had in a dental visit. To begin with, the support staff Amanda was attentive and gentle in doing comprehensive X rays and pano, as this is my first visit here. The equipments here are top notch. Amanda answered all my questions happily, and continued with some initial examination and educating on how to properly floss, while Dr.Yvonne checked in with me and started further examination and cleaning as required. Previously, I have had dentists who rush through and not even find time to explain the what and why. Though Dr.Yvonne is super busy, she explains everything that is going on and most importantly, walks you through proper dental hygiene and preventive maintenance. It was a great educational experience for me, and Dr.Yvonne's dedication to her job is showing in her work and attentive care towards patients. The visit ended with a discussion on toothbrush, mouth wash, floss tips and tricks, where Dr.Yvonne further answered my questions. I felt warm and comfortable throughout the visit. VERY DISAPPOINTED...... Dr. Chen take over the practice from Dr Walter Chow when he retired recently. My family have been visited Dr Chow's office for 17 years. I would not recommend Yvonne Chen because of my bad experience with her office and her poor service. 1. Her office told me that they would accept all insurance previously accepted by Dr Chow's office, but that turned out not to be the case. I had to pay extra fee on my co -payment because Chen was not participated in my insurance network at time of service. 2. Most importantly, I have serious reservations on Dr Yvonne Chen's experience. She worked on my case and caused tooth sensitivity complications. At the end, I had to get help from another Dentist Stephanie Wang to fix the issue over 4 office visits to desensitize the tooth. 3. I was charged for a limited oral evaluation that was not performed by Yvonne Chen. The service was offered by Dr Stephanie Wang as one of the corrective procedures to undo the damages caused by Dr Yvonne Chen's. 4. The fee charged by Dr Yvonne Chen's service is much higher than other dentists in Fremont. The charges reported to insurance company for the same regular cleaning services of my family members performed by another Fremont dentist in the Mission San Jose area are almost 50% lower than Dr Yvonne Chen's fees for my regular cleaning. Dr Chen is a fantastic dentist. I recently switched over from my old dentist who did not maintain my teeth at all, and I'm happy to say that I've found one who loves to do her job! Dr Chen is a bit of a perfectionist, which is something to love in your dentist. I mean honestly, who wants a dentist who's going to do half-ass work on your teeth?! She's very honest about what work you need to have immediately done to your teeth and what options you have. She's also great about taking your budget into account, she realizes not everyone's made out of money bags! I've gotten tons of work done (by tons I mean, I lived at the dentists for 2010-2011) and shes wonderful! I even FELL ASLEEP.. AT THE DENTIST! Gentle hands are what its all about! She also has tiny hands which means its not going to feel like shes shoving all 10 of those phalanges in your mouth cavity, more like 2 :] She also just got her office redone, and it looks amazing in there. First of all, I never write reviews, so the fact that I took time out to write one should tell other readers how important this was to me. I had the same dentist for ten years, but I mentioned to a friend that I wasn't totally satisfied. He suggested I have a consultation and cleaning with Dr. Chen, who his whole family had used for years. His teeth looked great so I thought why not. I can't believe it! I thought all dentists where the same. I've probably had five or six Dentists in my lifetime and that's the way it seemed, but the first thing that impressed me about Dr. Chen was the thorough cleaning I received. No one had ever spent that much time and precision cleaning my teeth. My previous dentist had me in and out in ten minutes tops. Dr. Chen's hygienist removed plague from years of superficial cleanings and they showed me exactly what had been missed and how I could prevent it in the future. Then, unlike my previous dentist, Dr. Chen, consulted with the hygienist and me to conduct a complete analysis of problems that would occur if I didn't make some changes in my dental care. The great thing was, she didn't make me feel bad about it, and she wasn't an alarmist. It was all very positive and made me feel like I could keep my teeth and gums healthy forever with just a few simple changes that she could help with. I really had no idea how bad my previous dentist was until she pointed out some things that he had worked on. It was pretty clear that he had done a quick and sloppy job, but she never talked poorly about him, she just pointed out what we needed to do for proper lifetime maintenance. I had never had that before!. She actually took time to get to know me, my background, what types of food I like, anything and everything that could possibly have an impact on my mouth. It was a breath of fresh air. What a professional with a holistic approach who is not out to just make a buck! After all, she couldn't bill the insurance company for the time she took to get to know my habits and develop a total care approach going forward. They don't pay for that, so it shows how much she cares and that she is proud of her work! This is the type of dentist that would be embarrassed if a patient of hers had a problem and she just simply is not going to let it happen. Amazing. I didn't know people like this existed anymore. I saw someone complain how the deep cleaning took them a while to recover from. Well, the cleaning was much more than I was used to, but it didn't hurt and there was no recovery time, but I guess if you are used to a hygienist that doesn't actually clean your teeth it might feel different. The good news is, after they get rid of the years of plague you've built up from your current sloppy dentist it is much easier. I've been back for my second cleaning and since there was less plague, it was much easier, but the first time actually felt good to me because I felt they were actually doing something, and like I said, no pain. Not sure why it got so many recommendations with 5 stars,.. new patient here need to sign agreement for cancellation without TWO DAYS in advanced notification agree to pay $100 rescheduling fee! And they do are serious for it and emphasize even one day notification will need to pay the $100. I still sign that since I think 5 stars means they should be really good, yet I don't know why I only do the cleaning and they took more then 10 pcs X - ray... and say this is how they do things, every clinic has their own way and rules... okay, you must be really good that got five start,... then I requested the quote for my treatment and after next week I called back to follow up since I didn't receive any update, they said they are really BUSY! Okay, I do curious why they can have so many recommendations? Oh by the way, their cleaning is the most SLOVENLY I ever had! Also while the treatment, doctor asked me couple times if I want to redo my invisalign maintainer, after she kept asking, I asked what's wrong with my current one? She said nothing wrong, for easier cleaning purpose, but I already told her the reason I chose the current way to maintain is the plastic one so easy missing, why she need to keep asking?? Where should I begin... Dr. Chen is just an entirely awesome Dentist! ANYone that is truly her patient will agree with me that she's the sweetest, most caring and considerate Dentist you have ever come across. I've gone to plenty of dentist before to know that certain dentists just don't have the "hands". The artistry of performing dental work requires gentle hands and extreme attention to details + patience!! Dr. Chen really has the tri-fecta! I know EVERYONE hates dental anesthetics injections, and most dentist does a pretty bad job at giving injections. It is my biggest fear seeing those needles come at me and actually FEELING the pain. But Dr. Chen is really good at giving injections!! I barely feel anything when she does it...and that really shows great skills in a dentist. Dr. Chen also has an eye for design; she has redecorated her entire practice into this modern HGTV-like space. It's really fresh and different for a dental office, which I love! No more ugly uncomfortable office-like bench or smelly carpet. Everything is modern with an open space concept. LASTLY, the staff are super nice people. Everyone are so friendly with smiles. And the lady that deals with dental insurance is SUPER. Dr. Chen and her will both go through the dental plan with you and show you all the $payments (explaining the amounts that the insurance will absorb and amount that you'll be paying.) They will work with you to make sure you get the most benefit and plan your treatment in a timely manner so you don't overspend out of your own pocket!!! read more

Dr. Chen is the best. I've been coming here for almost 5 yrs now. Whenever I have questions about a procedure that is being done, she never hesitates to sit down or call me to let me know what's going on. Jessica the receptionist is great also.
