I was very shocked by such an unprofessional response, but repeated that I will not be doing an x-ray. They then refused cleaning and treatment all together. This is really bizarre because a simple cleaning should not require x-rays. They clearly get additional payouts from insurance and that's why pushing it even on pregnant patients, which seems like a medical violation. All of the staff were very friendly and thorough. I'm very regular about my dentist visits (every 6 months) and have seen a couple different ones the past few years from moving around states - but Chung and his staff were able to identify a dead tooth/infection that I apparently had for a few years (they could tell it's been there a while based on the size of the infection growth shown in the x-rays). I'll need to get a root canal procedure to stop the infection from spreading! I'm appalled that my past dentists never caught this. They also pointed out several minor cavities & teeth grinding, and gave me suggestions on what I could do to solve those issues - ex. Filling the cavities, getting a mouth guard, and general tips on how I can be eating/brushing better to avoid these problems. The office lady also said she would check with my insurance to see what my out of pockets cost were and let me know, so that I could decide if I'd like to proceed with coming back for the additional work needed. Extremely disappointing and misleading billing experience. I would not recommend this practice…read more Before scheduling my appointment, I specifically called the office to confirm that they accepted my MetLife PPO dental insurance. I was told that they did, and I was explicitly assured that if there were any reason my insurance would not cover the services, the office would let me know before I came in. Their website also indicates that they accept MetLife PPO. I also specifically asked about the cost of the services beforehand. During my appointment, the dental hygienist was supposed to inform me about an additional $395 charge but "forgot." I was only informed about this charge when I went to check out. At that point, I was pressured to pay the $395 and was repeatedly assured that my dental insurance would cover 80-100% of the costs. I have now found out that the claim was submitted as out-of-network, despite my having specifically confirmed my insurance status with the office beforehand, and my insurance ultimately covered none of the $395. What is most frustrating is that I made a point of calling ahead specifically to avoid exactly this situation. Had I been told that the provider was out-of-network or that I could potentially be responsible for hundreds of dollars, I would not have proceeded with the treatment. Patients deserve accurate information about both insurance network status and out-of-pocket costs before treatment, not a surprise $395 charge at checkout followed by assurances that insurance will cover it when that turns out not to be the case. I am extremely disappointed with how this was handled and will be telling my friends, family, and anyone I know looking for a dentist not to use this practice. I will be filing a formal complaint with the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker protection as well as the Better Business Bureau over these fraudulent and misleading practices.
