Brewing companies, there are many in this neck of the woods, but very unique, one-of-a-kind ones,…read morelike this one, rarely do we find one. I happened to find this one while searching for the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck. It just so happened that I found out that the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck was going to be stationed outside the Parkway Brewing Company this past Wednesday during National Empanada Day and so I researched this place to learn more about it. I found out that Parkway Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Salem, Virginia. Established in 2012, it is well known for its distinctive ales and a vibrant tasting room with a large beer garden, live music, and food trucks. It operates a 30-barrel brewhouse, producing a large range of beers from IPA to lagers. Located near the Roanoke Valley Greenway, it attracts runners and cyclists, and has become a community hub for outdoor enthusiasts and beer lovers. When I arrived in my pearl white Lexus, the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck was already parked outside, but had not yet opened, so I went inside the brewery to explore its building. There I found a casual, low-key environment with an industrial-chick interior featuring a fireplace and garage doors that opened to the outdoors, to an area with picnic tables and sun umbrellas. Inside there were also several colorful modern murals and a wide counter where customers went to order and pay for their beers. They had several menus as well as display coolers with some of the beers being sold there. The friendly and knowledgeable young lady behind the counter did an excellent job explaining what they had, including the non-alcoholic options. While going to the restrooms, one passed by a window where you could see the brewhouse. Along the way there were also shelves filled with souvenirs of the place. In the room where the fireplace was, there was also a stage for live performances, which usually took place at night. I loved the ambiance and vive of the place and am looking forward to returning to one of their music live performance and some of their beers, and knowing that they also carry non-alcoholic ones will allow me to enjoy the evening and drive back home safely.

Love the overall design of this brewery and the food options. The design is like an old barn with…read morelong picnic tables and a couple high tops. We didn't get much food, but they have a brick pizza over right in the middle of the room which is really neat. They also have finger foods like pretzels and burgers that looked good, but we went before dinner to just have a few drinks. Great variety of options too from pilsners/lagers to sours and stouts. It's not overly bright inside too which can be bothersome for me at night and it's nice to just relax and enjoy to subtle hint of light (enough to where you can see everything your doing, but not too much where you can see every other person in the room and their facial expressions). The only downside (and it could be because it's slow season) was they only had one register so at times we waited for the line to get drinks TK dwindle down before getting in line ourselves. Might've different during peak season so when we go back during warmer weather and that is the case where they have another register open, I'll be sure to update that. Overall a great time, friendly and helpful staff, and an enjoyable atmosphere!

I especially enjoyed the quesabirria tacos and the pizza there. Their beers are delicious and they always come out with innovative, new types. The wait time was not long at all, and the cashier was very helpful with beer recommendations. The outside seating area and open air layout is fantastic in the summer, and they have heaters for the colder months. They also have lots of fun events to attend, including a disco vinyl night by the local college radio station. It is also great for families with lots of space for kids to run around. Highly recommend for any beer aficionados in the area.

We enjoy visiting local breweries and decided to stop in at AFOG on a Sunday evening at 6:30pm…read moreafter calling and confirming their hours. The brewery was easy to find and we originally thought it was housed inside an old school building but later learned it was previously a health services building. In addition to AFOG, there are also residential apartments in the remaining adjoining part of the building. There is a large outdoor area where a birthday celebration was happening amongst a small group. We proceeded inside and were immediately greeted by Sam. She helped me identify the IPA options and i immediately chose their Millennial Serum, which is a hazy imperial style that I enjoy. We looked around a bit, snapped some photos and looked at their swag. I'm a big tie dye guy and I was happy to see they had a great selection of AFOG tie dye shirts in my size. We decided to sit at the bar while I enjoyed my beer and chatted about our day. We also enjoyed talking with Sam and learning more about the brewery. We learned they are soon opening their second location in Buchanan, Virginia. Great stop, we felt welcomed, the beer was delicious and I have a new tie dye that will remind me of our time in Roanoke.
