Peckhams

Byres Road, West End

I adore Peckhams, but I have come to realise that I don't frequent it enough. Must. Try. Harder…read more They're one of the original delis in the area and arguably still the best. Whether you're after a wee snacky delicacy for a dinner starter (or dessert!), that essential but hard-to-find exotic ingredient that you simply must-have for a recipe, a designer beer or three, or even a quality malt whisky, Peckhams is the place that you're likely to find it. I usually visit here when my eye is caught by a fancy malt whisky in the window (cunningly displayed right beside their cash machine, the cads!), or when I'm seeking margaritas mix for what has become a Christmas cocktails tradition with us. The West End would be a poorer place without Peckhams. Long may they continue.

I love Peckhams. I'm probably there far too often. They pride themselves on being able to cater to your foodie needs all day long, with pastries and rolls in the morning, a wide range of lunch options and even their own range of freshly made ready meals for dinner. Then of course they have offers for coffee and cake, should you need anything else in between. As far as I'm concerned, this is what delis should be like. They would get five stars out of five too, but the service can be just a little bit on the slow side. I don't mean when they're struggling with the lunchtime rush because that's fair enough. I mean, it can take them a few minutes to realise that you haven't been served, and in serving you some things they can be very slow (don't bother getting butter on your roll in the morning, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands). It's easy to forgive them because they're friendly and helpful and because everything is delicious but if they were just a tiny bit more efficient Peckhams would be perfect.

Roscoe's Deli Bar - Tasty treats

The salt of the milky caramel…read morewith the richness of the chocolate, combined with the buttery crunch of the shortcake was simply delicious! I had intended to have one bite on the walk home and oops, I ate the whole thing! My commute home will now be compromised by urges to pick up one of those decadent morsels! Course number two was the Stong Italian sandwich! Who doesn't like strong Italians? Anyway, I chose Salami for my meat and it came with Mozzarella and sunblush tomatoes! I was lucky to be there on a day they ran out of their 'normal bread', so I ended up with their 'special' Italian bread. I think it is normally an up charge; I have a feeling I will be paying for it in the future because it hit the spot! Although, I am curious what the standard bread may be? I had mine toasted and for the Strong Italian that was the way to go! The juices of the tomatoes combined with the oils from the salami and mozzarella soaked into the toasty bread, making every last bite delectable! Though I chose one of their signature sandwiches, the menu is very flexible so you can make your own delicious concoction. Oh and all sandwiches can be made as salads as well! Aside from the quality food to order, there is a nice selections of cakes, jams etc along the wall. Roscoe's also has a small seating area if you would like to stay and eat. Honestly, the atmosphere is quite pleasant in general. As far as customer service goes, I met Roscoe's mom, and she was a sweetheart. She also made me my amazing sandwich! I have absolutely no complaints, and I have a feeling I may become a regular!

I went with the Strong Italian with parma ham, sunblushed tomatoes, mozzarella and lettuce leaves- OMG it was amazing! The sandwich and can of Coke came to under £5 as well! Def a fab lunch option if you are on the go in Hyndland!

Meadow Road - Delicious coffee

Thanks to Briony I was pointed in the direction of this new coffee shop in my 'hood, yo. Always…read morelooking for any excuse to grab a cheeky caffeine-fuelled beverage I set out along Dumbarton Road to check oot the latest coffee-kid on the block, Meadow Road Coffee. Named so as it sits on the corner of Dumbarton & Meadow Road. They don't have a sign as yet but my coffee-loving eyeballs spotted all the coffee making gear a quality coffee shop doth require & enter did I... I'm a fan of the look of this place - lots of wood and metal which is v.s'nice. Not many tables as such but still a good amount of seating in here. It was both nice and airy & warm (bonus this time of year!) at the same time. The greeting was also very warm from the 2 lovely guys behind the counter. I asked if they had soya milk which unfortunately they didn't so I opted for a regular cow milked flat white. They use Dear Green coffee beans here so straight away I knew it was going to be a damn fine cup of coffee before that liquid jump-cable juice had even hit my lips. Upon the lovely long counter they had a few cakes and bakes - a banana loaf, a salted caramel millionaires shortbread, some peanut butter brownies & also some undescribed biscuits which turned out to be ginger snaps & free ones at that! Yas. Bonus. I took a ginger snap & a brownie home to try later and both were delicious, especially the immense peanut buttery gorgeous, dense, chocolatey brownie, uh! So so good. If you like brownies then you NEED to try these. One of the best I have tasted (besides my own of course, haha!) NOMSVILLE. Needless to say my flat white was really good also. Spoke to the guys about opening hours and they said as they're newly opened they're still taking each day/week as it comes which makes sense, however for now it's pretty much 8am until 4 or 5pm. They also said soon they will be offering more (hot?) food so will open later then. I picked up a wee card by the till & on it says 'Meadow Road Coffee & Pizza Co' soooooo I am assuming (and hoping!) they will soon be serving delicious homemade pizzas here too! Wow. What a dream shop - coffee, cakes AND pizza?! Yes please thank you very much! Mmm.... A most welcome edition to this part of town (there are no decent coffee shops near this part of Partick/Thornwood) and a solid 4 stars and I will deffo be back again. Can't wait to see what these guys have up their sleeves...

I'm not even a big cake eater, but I will make an exception at Meadow Road. We were in a couple of weeks back and were pleased to find that they now serve hot food (we were told by a friend that they had issues getting a license to sell food) and we shared a Salmon and Avocado Bowl, which kind of does what it says on the tin. The ingredients are top quality, they don't skimp on the salmon and it has a great salad dressing. I would strongly recommend you try it. The cafe is clearly cut from the Aussie/NZ style, slotting into the West End somewhere between Papercup and Avenue G, without ever feeling like a watered down rip off. They clearly take pride in the quality of their coffee, so I would recommend dropping in, if only for a takeaway. It is out of the way, but we were recommended by a friend and we now go as often as we can. Spread the word, folks.

Places like Polish Taste, only act to cement this feeling. Whilst in the area at the weekend and having just picked up some awesome cakes and sausage rolls at Cottonrake (find review, read, love and visit!) I decided that the fresh white loaves in the window were just far too tempting to avoid. But hey, it's not just bread that's on offer in this kick ass wee deli. From perogies (spelling?) to awesome sausages, tinned good and fresh fruit. I've been back, I'll be back again and would advise anyone who's in the area to pop in for a nosey. Yes it's probably more expensive than the nearby T (ends in esco), but it's quality and unique. Yum.

And, trust me on…read morethis one, you most definitely do not have to be Polish to appreciate the magic of this place. The authenticity of this place, though, is perfect. Although I'm not Polish, I've spent quite a lot of time there and am a big fan of the culture. As soon as you step through the doors of this deli - you feel a bit like you're actually in Warsaw, and not in the West End of Glasgow. Wood paneling and straw baskets make this place undeniably cute, and as well as shelves and shelves of canned and tinned goods (all in Polish - obviously) you'll also find fresh goods. This includes a meat counter to die for (what can I say? I'm a carnivore at heart) as well as a mini bakery and lots and lots of cheese. All these products are delicious - and also very reasonably priced. I also love the fact that they sell Polish newspapers and magazines here. This definitely adds to the sense that a trip into Polish Taste is like a mini-holiday to Eastern Europe!

I just…read morewanted a stickybeak as I wasn't sure what the difference between Delizique and Cafezieque is (I'm still not really sure). At Delizique you can buy cakes/bread to go, and there isn't as many deli options as you would think from the name. The bread and cake is a long a counter as you go in the main door, which is also where people who have eaten in the dining space are paying for their food, and is the main thoroughfare so it gets pretty busy. There was an impressive array of cakes including chocolate brownies, cheesecake and a gluten free option of lemon polenta cake. We went for a brownie and the polenta cake and both were delicious when we scoffed them at home. I'd definitely pop back to check out their cake options again, as well as trying them out for food as I was pretty impressed by Cafezique.

I ordered a latte and thinking I would get a decent amount of coffee, I was left disappointed. You know those small glasses you get for water? That's what the latte came in. A friend and myself, although I had had breakfast a few hours previously, decided to go for pancakes. Now, the flavourings sounded amazing - from something that we believed was going to taste like carrot cake to apple and cinnamon (which is what I went for). First, we waited for ages. When the "pancake" finally arrived, it was a huge skillet type pancake. They looked good and smelled lovely. Unfortunately, upon cutting in, my friend found her's to be completely raw in the centre (think batter), and mine was burnt on the underside - completely burnt. They also, unfortunately, lacked a lot of flavour and were very dry. The raw pancake was replaced with a free and un-raw one, and I ate about three quarters of mine (but I wasn't happy about it). It's also really quite warm in here. The few things that redeem this place is the bread on display (beautiful, beautiful bread) and the veggie sausage roll (which does not look like a sausage roll at all, but taste lovely). I also really like the tree inside the room. The staff is also very friendly.
