Anyway, I've only been to this little gem, tucked away in Merchant Square, twice now, both for the itison Chateaubriand deal. And although it went up £2 and lost 250ml of wine, it was still a top class bargain in my books! On both occasions we were seated out on the square, all the better for watching and judging passers-by (you all do it, admit it!), given some menus to peruse should we wish any starters, and had the deal explained by the lovely waiting staff. Honestly, such warm and genuine service from the guys here, I really couldn't fault it. Then...the main event! A trellis is brought out to hold the tray of steaky goodness (do bear in mind the chateaubriand takes 30 minutes, so if you're really hungry share a wee starter, but it's really not necessary as time flies so quickly when you have wine and good chat) and our sides are placed on the table to share between us. With the deal the steak is accompanied by onion rings, salad (mainly rocket if you're not a fan of the peppery wonder of the leaf. I personally, am) and chunky chips. Really delicious, crispy, chip chips! Neither time did I manage a dessert, but on my most recent visit we decided to treat ourselves to a wee Irish coffee, which had a right kick to it. So much so that we could barely pay the bill after taking a fit of the giggles. Most of the diners surrounding us were in for the deal, however we did scope 1 or 2 tables that dined from the A La Carte menu, and the food looked delicious. I will say, if you do go for a dessert it might be worth doing a sharer, because they looked huge!

Our small coffees were over £2.50 each but we didn't object too much given we were enjoying the chat and the view. We did laugh at some of the other prices though - £3.10 for a breakfast roll and egg and 80p for a single digestive biscuit! I must admit the young guy serving was a gem - really smiley and enthusiastic, but I do think that this place is taking liberties with its prices. But when you're having a day out by the seaside, price isn't that important!

They did apologise but the drinks did still take an awfully long time to arrive. I've eaten dinners and lunches here before too and they're always nice, I particularly like their eggs benedict for a Sunday brunch, sat outside in the sun!

They have a range of cakes which changes daily and they normally have something quite unusual - recently I have tried a pistachio and rose cake, white chocolate, apple and pear cake and victoria sponge - I can recommend all three! It is not at the cheapest of places but the quality of what they serve makes it worth it.

Yet here we find not only a top-class seafood cafe, but also their shop next door. On emerging from Shields Road subway station, you are confronted with a pair of small buildings nestled up against the motorway embankment between the subway and a multi-storey car park. It's hardly the centre of civilisation and there isn't much else of interest around apart from the C. R. Mackintosh-designed Scotland Street School just across the road. But then again.... transport links are first-class with the adjacent subway, and there's car parking right next door, so why not have a restaurant here? The cafe itself is a strange wedge-shape and is not large so booking is advisable. I liked the clean décor and the marble-topped bar, which would be great to sit at at lunchtimes. I was pretty impressed with their wine selection, and ordered a Picpoul de Pinet Languedoc, which was really crisp and dry, just perfect for the fish. For starters, I tried the masala dressed crab with avocado, mango and lime. I really wasn't sure what to expect with this, but it was a lovely shaped mousse-like patty with a stack of mini-round crispy things to spread it on - words are failing me here as I really don't know what they were; not crisps, not oatcakes... whatever, it was all delicious and very crabby, that's the main thing! Herself was in an indulgent mood and went for the Cullen Skink, which she assured me was excellent. Too much cream for me however. We swiftly moved on to mains, and Herself ordered the special of whole lemon sole; plain and simple just the way it should be, and cooked to perfection. Conversation ceased for the next 10 minutes or so as she scoffed that down. Feeling a bit more adventurous, I opted for the monkfish pepper stew with mussels and capers, with a side of rosemary potatoes (although I had to remind them about that as they forgot). Whilst very tasty, maybe this is a dish designed to cater for Glasgow tastes as I found it a little bit too rich and wished I had tried something else. We both declined dessert as we were pretty stuffed after that; but I did have a small espresso that was suitably strong enough to get us back home. Overall, an excellent seafood place if that's your thing. I don't know if I'd go as far as saying it's the best in Glasgow, but it's the best seafood place I've tried on the south side (read: the ONLY seafood place I've tried on the south side!), and it has the great advantage of being super-convenient for the subway so you can leave the car at home. The mussels were in a broth flavoured with bacon and cauliflower - a combination I was unsure of but it was delicious, with a real smokey flavour. To follow I had grilled fillets of sole served with a crab, tomato and coriander salsa. The fish was perfectly cooked and the salsa was a great accompaniment. My dad had the daily special of battered haddock and chips and it too looked amazing and was quickly demolished. I also have to compliment the service - the waiter was incredibly attentive and nothing seemed too much hassle. If you're after some good seafood you really have to take the time and seek this place out - you won't be disappointed.

So step up Cafe Avanti! This is probably the closest chippy to us & I am happy to report it is a really good chippy. We usually order a sausage supper and either a fish or roast chicken supper with a portion of gravy or curry sauce (yum...slurp!) and every time we have had a take-away from here it has been nothing but damn fine. The chips always seem to be fresh (I get the feeling they only cook their chips in small batches at a time as you quite often have to wait for chips - which I always like as it means they'll be SUPER FRESH!) and their battered sausage & fish is always tasty. My favourite is their roast chicken...oh my! This avian delight is simply nom-tastic...you have to wait about 15mins for it (we usually pop into nearby Morrisons) but it is worth the wait. You get a HUGE quarter (I think? It seems much bigger though) of chicken all for £5.30 (for the supper) I think that price is pretty good considering how much you get & the size/quality of the chicken. I also am a fan of their curry sauce here which you get a HUGE cup of to go with your food and it is lovely, proper chip shop curry sauce. Mmm... Alongside the usual chip shop foodage they also sell pizzas (I am yet to try these) and their own version of KFC/Southern fried chicken ~ it always smells lovely but if I am in the mood for chicken I can't see past their roast chicken. Staff are reasonably friendly and the prices are good for a West End chippy. Also they are very handy for Partick train station or subway. Thank you Cafe Avanti for saving me from dodgy chippy Hell!

On my last afternoon, I found them to be open, so I strolled into the take-out area or as y'all call it, the "take away". My "Scottish Cousin"- not really a blood cousin, but a really good friend, told me to try a sausage and potato scone. WTH? Ok, is it a sausage roll and a potato scone? Two different things? No, he said it was two ingredients in one item. I asked the folks at the Cafe and they looked just as perplexed as I was. Ok, whatever, the line started getting long with hungry football fans and I started to panic. "Uh, chips and cheese please". The gentleman behind the counter asks me if I want salt and vinegar on it. Hmmm...never had that combo on cheese fries. So, yes to the vinegar and I forgo the salt. Best. Cheese. Fries. Ever. (Sorry, Cheese Chips) ;-) OMG. Is it the fresh thick-cut potatoes? Or the vinegar doused on the fries fresh out of the fryer? Or the freshly grated cheddar cheese??? I am now cheese fry ruined. :sigh:
